It has been many changes in traditional Korean food habits according to the improvement of household income levels and the rise of standard of living. Therefore, the pattern of consumption in animal origin processed/convenient foods would have changed. This research aims to find the tendency of consumption in some animal origin processed/convenient foods compared with typical Korean traditional foods according to household income levels. Therefore, this survey was made on 698 children from 10 elementary schools located in Seoul. They were divided into 6 groups according to their household income levels. The data were analysed using Chi-square test and F-test in SPSS package program. From this research, the following results were obtained: 1. Their average monthly household income levels were between 500, 000~1, 500, 000 won(64.2%) and their family were of mostly 4~5 members. There were no significant differences in children's physical status among various income groups. As the household. income level increases, the food expenditure per month increases and Engel's coefficient decreases. 2. The animal origin processed/convenient foods that have no significant differences are ham, sausage, milk, yogurt, canned fish, and fish meal. The high-income groups preferred bacon, cheese, pork cutlet, and fried chicken, compared to those of low-income groups. The low-income groups preferred crab-flavored meal, compared to those of high-income groups. 3. In some Korean traditional foods, there were significant differences according to income levels. Those were Bulgogi, baked fish, fried meat, cooked fish and meat with soy-bean sauce. Fried fish and anchovy have no significant differences in food intake frequency according to household income levels. Chicken and egg saute are liked by children in every income groups. 4. Between the animal origin processed/convenient foods and the typical Korean nonprocessed traditional foods, children preferred the former regardless of income levels. In conclusion, animal origin processed/convenient food consumption patterns were not affected by household income levels.
This study was conducted for researching demand on dietary education of low-level elementary school students and to develop an activity based textbook and a teaching manual on the subject. For necessity of dietary education, 88.8% of subjects answered dietary education is needed. The desirable frequency of the education was once a week (65.7%). The most appropriate time for the education was "school lunch" (37.5%), "special activity" (29.9%), "regular class" (12.4%) and "after school activity" (12.1%). The most preferred educational method was "experiment and practice" (40.1%). The desirable educational materials were "computer materials" (20.7%), "actual objects" (20.1%), "videotapes" (16.5%), "photographs-pictures" (12.2%) and "fairy tales-cartoons" (12.2%). The students wanted dietary information as "cooking" (26.1%), "growth and nutrition" (23.7%) and "right food information" (20.1%). The textbook was composed of five major chapters, which were "Traditional Dietary Culture", "Food", "Dietary Habit", "Hygiene and Environment" and "Cooking". Each major chapter had five to six smaller chapters, adding up to total of 32 chapters. The textbook had fun characters, illustrations, photographs and cartoons to deliver the main theme of each chapter. The textbook was in activity format so that it coul be readily and directly used in actual classes. The teaching manual was composed of background, goals, teaching plans and teaching points. The smaller chapters had learning goals, teaching-learning resources, important points, teaching-learning processes and reference materials. Videos were produced to help cook five snacks in the cooking chapter. Also, "Healthy Song" was created to be used in classrooms. This textbook will be helpful in children's right dietary habits and growth.
The gait characteristics and shapes of human foot are changed by their diseases and habits. Especially, it is known that the size and shape of foot of the elderly(aged) differ from these of youth foot, because of muscle degeneration and wearing footwear for a long time. Therefore, to design and make last for the elder footwear, anthropometric data measured elder feet and classified their foot type will be necessary. Nevertheless, elder footwear has been designed and made by using the same last of the youth. Therefore, to design elder footwear, we measured 49 anthropometric data on foot of the 252 elderly males and females, and classified their foot shape and type according to FI(foot index) and MPA(matarars-phalanx angle) in this study. The results showed that the elderly has a tendency of slenderizing on foot compare to the youth, and elderly females have more deformed foot type than elderly males. The results can be provided as basic information to the design of elder footwear.
To assess the nutritional and health status of the elderly, anthropometric measurements and blood test for analyzing biochemical indices were carried out from August to September in 1996. Data on the incidence of a specific disease and clinical symptoms were also collected by interviews with a questionnaire. Among the total of 169 free-living elderly interviewed(91 men, 78 women), 86 elderly(57 men, 29 women) participated in the anthropometric measurements, and 73 elderly(52 men, 21 women) in blood tests. Average heights and weights were much lower than the standards established in the Korean Recommended Dietary Allowances. While average triceps skinfold thickness of men and women were above the 50 percentile of the reference data, mid-arm muscle circumferences were lower than the 50 percentile. Prevalences of anemia, assessed by hemoglobin using WHO definition, were 38.5% for men and 33.3% for women. Blood levels of total protein and albumin were above the normal limit for all participants. Mean blood cholesterol levels of men and women were 163.9mg/dl and 185.8mg/dl, and triglyceride levels were 138.2mg/dl and 161.9mg/dl, respectively. Women older than 75 years generally had high levels of BMI, total cholesterol and triglyceride. Health status assessed by clinical symptoms generally showed no significant difference by age, and their smoking, and drinking habits. Males and the elderly who exercised regularly had better health status. It was suggested that exercise was a good way to improve health status. (Korean J Community Nutrition 2(4) : 568-577, 1997)
The purpose of this study was to verify the difference of middle school students' eating disorder behavior and scholastic adjustment according to the gender and weight group and evaluate correlations between their eating disorder behavior and scholastic adjustment. A survey was conducted in middle school second graders attending five schools located in Seoul. Results from 355 questionnaire sheets were utilized for statistical analysis, and the results were gained as below: With regard to eating disorder behavior by gender, female students showed more eating disorder behavior than male students (p < 0.01); however, scholastic adjustment did not indicate significant differences by gender. According to the result of analyzing scholastic adjustment according to the weight group, the obese group showed lower scholastic adjustment (p < 0.05) and adjustment to studying (p < 0.01) than other groups; however, the eating disorder behavior, attachment to school, and adjustment to school did not indicate significant differences. According to the results of analyzing scholastic adjustment by eating disorder group, the normal group showed higher adjustment to studying than the risky group (p < 0.01). And scholastic adjustment, attachment to school, and adjustment to school did not indicate significant differences. The eating disorder behavior showed negative relationship with adjustment to studying. They showed more eating disorder behavior, their adjustment to studying became lower. Therefore, it is necessary to provide nutritional education at home and at school for them to have appropriate dietary habits as well as health education for them to maintain normal weight.
This study was conducted to investigate the weight concerns of female university students living in Jeonju, as well as their control on behavior. Self-administered questionnaires were collected from 285 students. Statistical data analysis was completed using the SPSS v. 11.0 program. The results are summarized as follows: The average weight, height, and BMI of the subjects were 21.43 kg, 161.93 cm, and 19.8, respectively. With regard to body image, most were dissatisfied with their figures, especially the hips and thighs. About 42% of the students estimated their figures as 'slightly fat', while 5.4% stated 'very fat', even though their BMI classified as 'normal'. Four percent of the underweight students described themselves as being 'fatty'. Approximately 93% of the students had strongly pursued weight control, and 45.3% reported wanting to lose about $2{\sim}5$ kg. Almost 73% of the respondents had weight loss experience. The primary reason for weight control was to improve self-confidence. Only 19.6% had succeeded in losing weight, while nearly 48% had stopped dieting. To reduce weight, about two thirds of the students ate less(e.g. no snacks, no sweets). Fifty percent tried to reduce weight by more physical activity(e.g. sports). Television(50.9%), friends(48.4%), and newspapers/magazines(40.4%) were essential sources of pertinent information. In conclusion, the results show that female students in Jeonju have a great interest in weight reduction. Thus, the majority are willing to try several methods for weight reduction, which however, are not promising and not based on a lasting nutritional change. Therefore, it's necessary to increase cooperation among those concerned(e.g. dietitians, teachers, parents, media) and to develop weight-control programs that take into consideration lifestyle and daily habits, as well as combine physical activity, nutrition, and behavioral and personality training.
The aim of the study was to assess the prevalence of young adults obesity, morbid obesity and severe obesity and to identify associated factors. Data for 50,095 participants aged 20-39 from Community Health Survey 2019. Chi-square test and multiple logistic regression were used for the analysis. Prevalence for young adults obesity, morbid obesity and severe obesity were 23.60%, 5.86% and 1.31%. Aged of 20's, male, low income, low educational level and marital status were found to be associated with all stages of obesity. Current smoking, high risk drinking, physical activity, health promotion practices, subjective health, EQ-5D, stress, depressive symptoms and comorbidities increased the prevalence of obesity in young adults. Health check-up, subjective health, EQ-5D, stress, depressive symptoms and comorbidities increased the prevalence of severe obesity in young adults. Based on the results, it is necessary to develop and provide focused intervention consisting of characteristics of young adults and stages of obesity.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the convergence factors affecting disease management efforts of the middle-aged population who have comorbidities of all three metabolic diseases: type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and dyslipidemia. This study used raw data from the 2015 community health survey(CHS). A multiple hierarchical regression analysis was performed that the included variables explained 20.1% of the variance in weight-loss efforts, 6.8% of exercise efforts and 5.3% diet efforts respectively. This study revealed associations among gender, socioeconomic status, and behavioral habits of smoking and drinking with disease-management efforts. It is important to design a health service or supportive intervention with consideration of multiple factors for patients with multiple metabolic disease.

Background: Korea has shown a rapid pace of aging and has become an aged society in a shorter period than Western countries. Therefore, it is important that middle-aged workers maintain their ability to work in the industrial field at the maximum level while maintaining their health. The purpose of this study was to analyze the factors affecting work ability and to use this data to maintain the working ability of middle-aged workers in the future. Methods: From 2015 to 2017, we surveyed 371 street cleaners who visited a health center for health promotion in a metropolitan city. The relationship between the general characteristics of the survey subjects and the Work Ability Index (WAI) was confirmed by a univariate analysis. Statistically significant (p<0.2) factors were selected and a multiple linear regression analysis was conducted with WAI scores as a dependent variable. Results: Age, body mass index, body fat percentage, the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test-Korea (AUDIT-K) scores, the Psychosocial Well-Being Index-Short Form (PWI-SF) scores, maximal oxygen consumption ($VO_{2max}$), and hypertension showed statistically significant correlations with the WAI in the univariate analysis. In the multivariate analysis, the $VO_{2max}$, AUDIT-K scores, and PWI-SF scores were included in the regression equation. $VO_{2max}$ had the greatest effect on the standardization coefficient indicating the relative contribution of independent variables, followed by the AUDIT-K scores and the PWI-SF scores. Conclusion: Programs to increase workers' physical work ability and alleviate psychosocial stress and drinking habits should be developed and implemented in the future.

The purpose of this study is to identify the prevalence of impaired fasting glucose among non-diabetic middle-aged men in Korea and to identify factors related to impaired fasting glucose. The research method is a descriptive research study using data of 545 men aged 40-64 who participated in the 8th Korean Health and Nutrition Examination Survey(KHANES) in the second year(2020). For data analysis, frequency and percentage, mean and standard deviation, Rao-Scott 𝛘2, t-test, and logistic regression analysis were performed using the complex sample analysis method of SPSS/WIN 23.0 program. The results of this study showed that the prevalence of impaired fasting glucose was 44.77%, and the frequency of drinking(OR=1.531, 95% CI: 1.01-2.33) and triglycerides(OR=1.002, 95% CI: 1.00-1.01) were significantly related factors for impaired fasting glucose. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a program for the prevention and management of impaired fasting glucose in middle-aged men, and this program should include drinking habits and triglycerides management strategies.
