For large scale applications of high temperature superconductor(HTS) such as transmission cables, motors and generators, long length of flexible HTS conductors is required. Currently, HTS tape that is capable of being fabricated in long length by industrial processes is the Bi-2223 HTS tape. In this study, we fabricated 19 filamentary Bi-2223($Bi_{1.8}$$Pb_{0.4}$$Sr_{2}$$Ca_{2}$$Cu_{3}$$O_{10+X}$) HTS tape with 100m length by PIT(Powder In Tube) process. Critical current(Ic) of this long length tape was measured 18.5 A at 77 K, self field and short sample Ic is 32.5 A at the same condition. Critical current of 100m length tape was decreased by about 1/3 compared to that of short tape. This was mainly resulted from the increase of non homogeneity in oxide layer.

Engineering critical current (Je=Ic/total tape cross-section area) that is important factor for practical applications and fabrication cost was measured 2.2 kA/cm2.
In recent years, high-temperature superconductor (HTS) Quadruple Triplets are being developed for heavy ion accelerators, because the HTS magnets are suitable to withstand radiation and high heat loads in the hot cell of accelerators. Generally, an iron yoke, which costs a mass of material, was employed to enhance the magnetic field when a quadrupole magnet was designed. The type of the magnet is called iron-dominated magnet, because the total magnetic field was mainly induced by the iron. However, in the HTS superconductor iron-dominated magnets, the coil-induced field also can have a certain proportion. Therefore, the air-core HTS quadrupole magnets can be considered instead of the iron-core HTS quadrupole magnet to be employed to save the iron material. This study presents the design of an air-core HTS quadruple triplet which consists three by air-core HTS quadruple magnet and compare the design result with that of an iron-core HTS quadruple triplet. First, the characteristics of an air-core HTS quadrupole magnet were analyzed to select the magnet system for the magnetic field uniformity impairment. Then, the field uniformity was improved(< 0.1%) exactly using evolution strategy (ES) method for each iron-core HTS quadrupole magnet and the air-core HTS quadruple triplet was established. Finally, the designed air-core triplet was compared with the iron-core HTS quadruple triplet, and the results of beam trajectories were presented with both the HTS quadruple triplet systems to show that the air-core triplet can be employed instead of the iron-core HTS triplet. The design of the air-core quadruple triplet was suggested for a heavy ion accelerator.
The thermal characteristics of solid nitrogen are investigated by experiment and analysis for the purpose of evaluating its feasibility as a cooling medium for HTS (high T$_{c}$ superconductor) magnets. A cryostat to refrigerate a liquid-nitrogen container well below its freezing temperature with a 2-stage GM cryocooler is designed and constructed. The spatial distribution of temperature is measure as a function of time during the freezing and melting processes. from which the thermal diffusivity of solid nitrogen can be approximately calculated. the freezing process is formulated and solved by the integral method with an assumption of phase equilibrium at the solid-liquid interface and experimental observation. It may be concluded that the thermal diffusion in solid phase is much slower than in liquid and the degree of super-saturation is quite severe in the solidification of nitrogen.n.

A theoretical investigation to find thermodynamically optimum design conditions of conduction-cooled Peltier current leads is performed. A Peltier current lead (PCL) is composed of a thermoelectric element (TE), a metallic lead and a high temperature superconductor (HTS) lead in the order of decreasing temperature. Mathematical expressions for the minimum heat flow per unit current crossing the TE-metal interface and the minimum heat flow per unit current from the metal lead to the joint of the metal and the HTS leads are obtained. It is shown that the temperature at the TE -metal interface possesses a unique optimal value that minimizes the heat flow to the joint and that this optimal value depends on the material properties of the TE and the metallic lead but not the joint temperature nor electric current. It is also shown that there exists a unique optimal value for the joint temperature between the metal and the HTS leads that minimizes the sum of the power dissipated by ohmic heating in the current leads and the refrigerator power consumed to cool the lead, for a given length of the HTS.

An in-flight fragment separator, which aims to produce and study rare isotopes, consists of superferric quadrupole triplets and $30^{\circ}$ dipole magnets to focus and bend the beams for achromatic focusing and momentum dispersion, respectively. The separator is divided into pre and main stages, and we plan to use superconducting magnets employing high-Tc superconductor (HTS) coils in the pre-separator area, where radiation heating is high. The HTS coils will be cooled by cold He gas in 20-50 K, and in the other area, superferric magnets using low-temperature superconductor (LTS) will be used at 4 K. A few LTS coils were wound and successfully tested in a LHe dewar, and the design of cryostat has been optimized. Development of the HTS coils is ongoing in collaboration with a group at KERI. An HTS coil of racetrack shape was wound and tested in a $LN_2$ bath and in a dewar with cryocooler. No degradation on critical current due to coil winding was found.
In this paper, a high-temperature superconductor(HTS) current lead operating in current sharing mode is described. The minimum heat dissipation and the optimum safety factor(cross-sectional area) is obtained analytically for partial current sharing HTS leads. It is assumed that the current lead is in conduction cooled state, and the sheath material is the alloy of silver and gold. The reduced cross-sectional area results partial current sharing state, and consequently reduces conduction heat transfer, but the Joule heat generation is increased. The optimized HTS current lead is different from the conventional copper leads. In the copper leads, the minimum heat dissipation is obtained for the zero gradient of temperature at warm end. However, the temperature gradient at warm end is not zero when the HTS lead operates at minimum dissipation state.
To improve trapped field characteristics of a high temperature superconducting (HTS) bulk, a technique to implement artificial holes has been studied. The artificial holes, filled up with epoxy or metal, may provide better cooling channel and enhance mechanical strength of the HTS bulk. Although many useful researches based on experiments have been reported, a numerical approach is still limited because of several reasons that include: 1) highly non-linear electromagnetic properties of HTS; and 2) difficulty in modeling of randomly scattered "small" artificial holes. In this paper, a 2-D finite element method with iteration is adopted to analyze trapped field characteristics of HTS bulk with artificial holes. The validity of the calculation is verified by comparison between measurement and calculation of a trapped field in a $40{\times}40\;mm$ square and 3.1 mm thick HTS bulk having 16 artificial holes with diameter of 0.7 mm. The effects of sizes and array patterns of artificial holes on distribution of trapped field within HTS bulk are numerically investigated using suggested method.

Superconducting magnets have paved the way for opening new horizons in designing an electromagnet of a high field magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) device. In the first phase of the superconducting MRI magnet era, low-temperature superconductor (LTS) has played a key role in constructing the main magnet of an MRI device. The highest magnetic resonance (MR) field of 11.7 T was indeed reached using LTS, which is generated by the well-known Iseult project. However, as the limit of current carrying capacity and mechanical robustness under a high field environment is revealed, it is widely believed that commercial LTS wires would be challenging to manufacture a high field (>10 T) MRI magnet. As a result, high-temperature superconductor together with the conducting cooling approach has been spotlighted as a promising alternative to the conventional LTS. In 2020, the Korean government launched a national project to develop an HTS magnet for a high field MRI magnet as an extent of this interest. We have performed a design study of a 7 T 320 mm winding bore HTS MRI magnet, which may be the ultimate goal of this project. Thus, in this paper, design study results are provided. Electromagnetic design and analysis were performed considering the requirements of central magnetic field and spatial field uniformity.
The optimum cross-sectional area Profile of gas-cooled high-temperature superconductor (HTS) current lead is analyzed to have minimum helium boil-off rate. The conventional constant area HTS lead has much higher helium consumption than the optimum HTS lead considered in this study. The optimum HTS lead has variable cross-sectional area to have constant safety factor. An analytical formula of optimum shape of lead and temperature profile are obtained. For multi-step HTS current leads, the optimum tape lengths and minimum heat dissipation rate are also formulated. The developed formulations are applied to the Bi-2223 material, and the differences between constant area, constant safety-factor, and multi-step current leads are discussed.
