  • In this paper, we introduce a phone vector discrete HMM(PVDHMM) that decodes a phone sequence string, and demonstrates the applicability to spoken document retrieval. The PVDHMM treats a phone recognizer or large vocabulary continuous speech recognizer (LVCSR) as a vector quantizer whose codebook size is equal to the size of its phone set. We apply the PVDHMM to decode the phone sequence strings and compare the outputs with those of a continuous speech recognizer(CSR). Also we carry out spoken document retrieval experiment through PVDHMM word spotter on the phone sequence strings which are generated by phone recognizer or LVCSR and compare its results with those of retrieval through the phone-based vector space model.

  • In this paper, the recurrent neural networks (RNN) is applied to compensate for HMM recognition algorithm, which is commonly used as main recognizer. Among these recurrent neural networks, the multi-layer recurrent neural prediction model (MRNPM), which allows operating in real-time, is used to implement learning and recognition, and HMM and MRNPM are used to design a hybrid-type main recognizer. After testing the designed speech recognition algorithm with Korean number pronunciations (13 words), which are hardly distinct, for its speech-independent recognition ratio, about 5% improvement was obtained comparing with existing HMM recognizers. Based on this result, only optimal (recognition) codes were extracted in the actual DSP (TMS320C6711) environment, and the embedded speech recognition system was implemented. Similarly, the implementation result of the embedded system showed more improved recognition system implementation than existing solid HMM recognition systems.

  • An automatic pronunciation correction system provides learners with correction guidelines for each mispronunciation. In this paper we propose an HMM based speech recognizer which automatically classifies pronunciation errors when Korean speak Japanese. For this purpose we also develop phoneme recognizers for Korean and Japanese. Experimental results show that the machine scores of the proposed recognizer correlate with expert ratings well.

  • In recent years research on HCI technology has been very active and speech recognition is being used as its typical method. Its recognition, however, is deteriorated with the increase of surrounding noise. To solve this problem, studies concerning the multimodal HCI are being briskly made. This paper describes automated lipreading for bimodal speech recognition on the basis of image- and speech information. It employs audio-visual DB containing 1,074 words from 70 voice and tri-viseme as a recognition unit, and state tied HMM as a recognition model. Performance of automated recognition of 22 to 1,000 words are evaluated to achieve word recognition of 60.5% in terms of 22word recognizer.

  • In this paper, we implement the speech recognition system based on the continuous distribution HMM and Browser-embedded model using the Java. That is developed for the speech analysis, processing and recognition on the Web. Client sends server through the socket to the speech informations that extracting of end-point detection, MFCC, energy and delta coefficients using the Java Applet. The sewer consists of the HMM recognizer and trained DB which recognizes the speech and display the recognized text back to the client. Because of speech recognition system using the java is high error rate, the platform is independent of system on the network. But the meaning of implemented system is merged into multi-media parts and shows new information and communication service possibility in the future.

  • In this paper, we explore the possibility to use wavelet decomposition based on modified octave structured 5-level filter banks as a set of features for speech recognition. The HMM (Hidden Markov Model) is used as a recognizer 〔l〕. We compared the performance of the wavelet decomposition with the mel-cepstrum and LPC cepstrum. Experimental results show favorable results.

  • The speech recognizer in general operates in noisy acoustical environments. Many research works have been done to cope with the acoustical variations. Among them, the multiple-HMM model approach seems to be quite effective compared with the conventional methods. In this paper, we consider a multiple-model approach combined with the model compensation method and investigate the necessary number of the HMM model sets through noisy speech recognition experiments. By using the data-driven Jacobian adaptation for the model compensation, the multiple-model approach with only a few model sets for each noise type could achieve comparable results with the re-training method.

  • In this paper, we discuss the user-customized interaction for intelligent home environments. The interactive system is based upon the integrated techniques using both speech and face recognition. For essential modules, the speech recognition and synthesis were basically used for a virtual interaction between user and proposed system. In experiments, particularly, the real-time speech recognizer based on the HM-Net(Hidden Markov Network) was incorporated into the integrated system. Besides, the face identification was adopted to customize home environments for a specific user. In evaluation, the results showed that the proposed system was easy to use for intelligent home environments, even though the performance of the speech recognizer did not show a satisfactory results owing to the noisy environments.

  • While most Korean speech databases are developed for adults' speech, not for children's speech, there are various children's speech databases based on other languages. Because there are wide differences between children's and adults' speech in acoustic and linguistic characteristics, the children's speech database needs to be developed. In this paper, to find the differences between them in Korean, we built speech recognizers using HMM and tested them according to gender, age, and the presence of VTLN(Vocal Tract Length Normalization). This paper shows the speech recognizer made by children's speech has a much higher recognition rate than that made by adults' speech and using VTLN helps to improve the recognition rate in Korean.

  • The present study describes neural networks for stereoscopic vision, which are applied to identifying human speech. In speech recognition based on stereoscopic vision neural networks (SVNN), the similarities are first obtained by comparing input vocal signals with standard models. They are then given to a dynamic process in which both competitive and cooperative processes are conducted among neighboring similarities. Through the dynamic processes, only one winner neuron is finally detected. In a comparative study, the two-layered SVNN was 7.7% higher in recognition accuracies than the hidden Markov model (HMM). From the evaluation results, it was noticed that SVNN outperformed the existing HMM recognizer.
