  • The morphological changes of the enterochromaffin cells in the gastrointestinal mucosae of Rana amurensis were observed during pre-hibernating, hibernating, post-hibernating and active period. The results of the observation are as follow: 1. The relative values of the enterochromaffin cell numbers in the pre-hibernating, hibernating and post-hibernating groups as compared with the active group are 1.50, 0.36 and 0.90, respectively. 2. In active and pre-hibernating groups, the enterochromaffin cells are large and middle-amount granulated cells and the sparse granulated cells increase significantly during hibernating and post-hibernating periods. 3. It is concluded that the morphological changes of enterochromaffin cells are due to lowered metabolic acitvities especially lowered endocrine activity during hibernation.

  • The periodic changes of testis and \ulcorner션 epididymidis in Korean hibernating bats, the oriental discoloured bats (Vesportilio superans Thomas) and the Korean greater horseshoe bats (Rhinolophus ferrumequinum korak Kuroda) were studied in order to clarify the possibility of correlation between their histological findings and one of physiological facets, hibernation, and the results obtained were as follows: 1. The spermatogenic function of the oriental discoloured bats obtained in July and August was depressed although the spermatocytes showed a considerable cell proliferation. Few mature sperms were observed in the seminiferous tubules of the bat obtained in August. 2. The spermatogenic function of the Korean greater horeshoe bats obtained in September was not remalkable but a considerable number of sperms were stored in the excretory ducts which were characterized by existence of para-tubular spaces in the ductus epididymidis. 3. The spermatogenic epithelia of the Korean greater horseshoe bats obtained in December showed histologically atrophied figures. However, a vast number of sperm remained in extremely expaned luminae of the ductuc epididymidis which epithelial cells were maintained rectangular in shape. 4. These results suggest that there are periodic changes of the spermatogenic epithelia and the excretory ducts, and that those histological changes are closely related to their wintering.

  • This survey has been carried out on ten species(Erythronium japonicum, Symplocarpus renifolius, Adonis amurensis var. ramosa, Corydalis turtschaninovii var. genuina, Primula sieboldii forma spontanea, Anemone raddeana, Gagea Iutea, Heloniopsis japonjca, Hylomecon japonicum, and Convallaria majalis var. keiskei in the undergrowth of a forest of deciduous broad-leaved trees in the Kwangnung area of Kyung-Ki Province. They always bloom towards the end of March which is earlier than most of the other plants do. They completely finish up their matter productions before foliage of the deciduous trees, which are the upper strata plants, grows broader or to cite in other terms, before the relative light intensity in the lower strata is fallen to the lowest degree to become to insufficient to allow for photosynthesis. These phanerophytes naturally wither down between June and July. The above mentioned phenomenon clearly demonstrates a kind of the ecological niches and habitat segregation in terms of using sunlight to her greatest advantage. Soon after these herbs wither they make their own winter buds-life form-around their roots and then go into hibernation. The intensity of light in this forest zone was measured through the use of a lux meter in order to investigate it's seasonal variations. In additions, an intensive survey on the duration of their efflorescence was fullfilled.

  • This study was performed to investigate the bionomical characteristics of Allomyrina dichotoma in Korea. The imaginal stage was from late June to late August, and the advent of imagoes was the most frequent in mid-July. The larvae inhibited in humus and the period of larva was all completed in late October. At the stage of the third larva, the larvae entered into the hibernation. The average number of laid eggs was 24, and all periods of each stage - eggs, first, second, third instar larvae and pupa - were shortened in $30^{\circ}C$ than in $25^{\circ}C$. As for the longevity of imagoes, female, reared in individual and in low temperature lived longer than male, in group and in high temperature, respectively.

  • Wearable computer systems use the wireless universal serial bus (WUSB), which refers to USB technology that is merged with WiMedia physical layer and medium access control layer (PHY/MAC) technical specifications. WUSB can be applied to wireless personal area network (WPAN) applications as well as wired USB applications such as PAN. WUSB specifications have defined high-speed connections between a WUSB host and WUSB devices for compatibility with USB 2.0 specifications. In this paper, we focus on an integrated system with a WUSB over an IEEE 802.15.6 wireless body area network (WBAN) for wireless wearable computer systems. Due to the portable and wearable nature of wearable computer systems, the WUSB over IEEE 802.15.6 hierarchical medium access control (MAC) protocol has to support power saving operations and integrate WUSB transactions with WBAN traffic efficiently. In this paper, we propose a low-power hibernation technique (LHT) for WUSB over IEEE 802.15.6 hierarchical MAC to improve its energy efficiency. Simulation results show that the LHT also integrates WUSB transactions and WBAN traffic efficiently while it achieves high energy efficiency.

  • To understand the adaptational strategy of Korean chipmunks (Tamias sibiricus) to cold temperature, blood and serum properties, and thyroid gland activity of cold-exposed chipmunks were examined. The number of erythrocytes and hemoglobin concentration increased, but platelets decreased in cold-exposed chipmunks compared with warm chipmunks. Serum total protein levels increased at early phase of cold-exposure, and decreased thereafter. Plasma glucose levels showed a transitory increase in cold temperature. Although there was significant decrease in serum total thyroxine level in cold-exposed chipmunks, serum total triiodothyronine level changed little. Histological analysis of thyroid glands demonstrated decreased thyroid activity, suggesting that differences in the blood and serum properties between the warm and cold-exposed chipmunks may be due to the different metabolic strategy associated with cold temperature.

  • Background: Hibernating bats exhibit ubiquitous winter activity in temperate zones, but there is considerable between- and within-species variety in their intensity and purpose. Bats may fly during winter for sustenance or travel to other hibernacula. This study compared inter-regional variation in the winter activity of the greater horseshoe bat (Rhinolophus ferrumequinum). We predicted that weather and hibernacula-environmental conditions would influence winter activity patterns. Results: Winter activity patterns differed between regions. In the Anseong area, we confirmed movement inside the hibernaculum, but in Hampyeong, we observed movement both inside and between hibernacula. The two regions differ by $4^{\circ}C$ in average winter temperatures. Anseong experiences 22 days during which average daily temperatures exceeded $5^{\circ}C$, whereas Hampyeong experienced 50 such days. During the hibernating period, bat body weight decreased by approximately 17-20% in both regions. Conclusions: Ambient temperatures and winter-roost environments appear to be behind regional differences in hibernating bat activity. As winter temperatures in Korea do not favor insect activity, feeding probability is low for bats. However, bats may need to access water. At Anseong, underground water flows inside the hibernaculum when the reservoir outside is frozen. At Hampyeong, the hibernaculum does not contain a water source, but the reservoir outside does not freeze during winter. In conclusion, water-source location is the most likely explanation for regional variation in the winter activity of hibernating bats.

  • The seasonal variation in lipids, and fatty acid composition of neutral lipid(NL) and phospholipid(PL) contained in the muscles of hibernant fish(loach) were investigated. In the investigation, four groups of wild loaches ere used, those caught May, 1993(before spawning period), August, 1993(after spawning period), November, 1993(just before hibernation) and March, 1994(just after hibernation). The NL was the most abundant in muscle lipid, followed by PL and glycolipid(GL), and also the composition and variation patterns were almost similar between female and male throughout all the periods. NL content began to increase gradually after March and came to the maximum in August(under 90%) ; hereafter got to decrease gradually again and came to the minimum in March of the next year(under 60%). While the variation-pattern of GL and PL was in inverse proportion with that of NL and their content came to the maximum in March of the next year. The NL and PL fractions were mainly consisted of triglyceride and phosphatidyl choline respectively, and both of the contents showed the highest value in August, the lowest in March of the next year. The major fatty acids in NL fraction were 16:0, 16:1, 18:1, 18:2 and 18:3($\omega$3). In particular, the ratio of 16:1 was much higher than that in PL, while those of highly unsaturated fatty acids(HUFAs) such as 20:4($\omega$6), 20:5($\omega$3) and 22:6($\omega$3) were much lower. The ratio of 16:0 in NL was almost constant through the year, however those of 16:1, 18:1, 18:2 and 18:3($\omega$3) showed a tendency to increase after March and were about 2~4% higher in May, compared with that in March, while those of HUFAs were about 2~4% lower. In particular, the ratio of 16:1 in NL continuously decreased after May and markedly decreased in March of the next year, but those of 18:1, 18:2 were almost constant until November. In August, saturates and monoenes were higher levels due to the slight increase of 18:0, 14:1 and 17:1 than in the other periods, while those of HUFAs decreased and the unsaturation(TUFA/TSFA) of NL showed the lowest value in August. On the contrary, saturates and monoenes gradually decreased after November and the most of them including 18:0, 16:1, 18:1 and 18:2 rapidly decreased in March of the next year, while 20:1, 20:4(~6), and 20:5(~3), and 22:6(~3) were in inverse proportion. PL consisted mainly of 16:0, 16:1, 18:1, 18:2, 20:4(~6), and 20:5(~3). Saturates and monoenes-composition showed almost no difference in March and May, while polyene acids ratio showed similar changes with that of NL. In August, the ratio of saturates(16:0, 18:0) were high but that of HUFAs were low, and after November 16:0, 18:0, 18:1, 18:2 and 18:3($\omega$3) began to decrease, while most of HUFAs increased in their composition-ratio until the marking increase of their unsaturation and the big changes of 18:2, 18:3($\omega$3), 20:4($\omega$6), 22:6($\omega$3) in March of the next year.

  • Temperate-resident bats exhibit a circadian cycle of torpor and arousal In summer. The physiological role and selective advantage of torpor as an energy saving mechanism have been received much attention by hibernation biologists. However, despite the significance of the recovering euthermic function, the arousal process and mechanism in these animals have been poorly addressed. In this study, we investigated thermogenic and motor activities of a local bat species Murina leucogaster during arousal by simultaneously examining oxygen consumption rate, body temperature ($T_b$) and pectoral electromyography (EMG). We found that Tb of the torpid bats (12-14$^{\circ}C$) was augmented slowly by nonshivering mechanism during the initial awakening phase. The pectoral shivering, gauged by EMG activity, occurred between 17$^{\circ}C$ and 38$^{\circ}C$. Over this Tb range of shivering, heat was produced at a rate of 0.145 kcal $kg^{-1}\;min^{-1}$ to raise 1$^{\circ}C$ $T_b$ per min. Shivering was most intensive at 30-35$^{\circ}C$ where both EMG amplitude and spike frequency were the highest. Activation of the pectoral myofibers seemed to be controlled in a manner that motor units were recruited from smaller to larger sizes, with greater synchronization, as muscle shivering became intensive with increasing $T_b$.

  • Habitat environment and feeding habitat of Iksookimia koreensis and Cobitis lutheri were investigated in the Mangyeong River, Jeollabuk-do, Korea from 2005 to 2006. They together inhabit the upper and middle stream, but they showed differences in their microhabitat. I. koreensis inhabited the stony zones of relatively rapid waters with a water depth of 30~60 cm, whereas C. lutheri lived in the sandy zones of relatively slow waters with a depth of 30~100 cm. The two species were active during daylight hours from March to October but hibernated in the winter season. During hibernation I. koreensis still lived in the gravel and stone and C. lutheri burrowed in the sand. I. koreensis ingested mainly chironomid and other aquatic insects, whereas C. lutheri fed mainly on Chironomidae, Copepoda and Branchiopoda. The feeding rate of both species was highest in April and September, but they did not feed in the winter.
