  • One of the most important issues of crystalline silicon solar cell is minimizing reflectance at the surface. Laser texturing is an isotropic process that will sculpt the surface of a silicon wafer, regardless of its crystallographic orientation. We investigated surface texturing process using Nd-YAG laser ($\lambda$=1064 nm) on multi-crystalline silicon wafer. Removal of slag formed after the laser process was performed using acid solution (HF : $HNO_3$ : $CH_3COOH$ : DI water). The reflectance and carrier lifetime of the samples were measured and analyzed using UV-Vis spectrophotometer and carrier lifetime tester. It was found that the minimum reflectance of the samples was 16.39% and maximum carrier life time was $21.8\;{\mu}s$.

  • Ti-Ni alloys are widely used in numerous biomedical applications (e.g., orthodontics, cardiovascular science, orthopaedics) due to their distinctive thermomechanical and mechanical properties, such as the shape memory effect, superelasticity and low elastic modulus. In order to increase the biocompatibility of Ti-Ni alloys, many surface modification techniques, such as the sol-gel technique, plasma immersion ion implantation (PIII), laser surface melting, plasma spraying, and chemical vapor deposition, have been employed. In this study, a Ti-49.5Ni (at%) alloy was electrochemically etched in 1M $H_2SO_4$+ X (1.5, 2.0, 2.5) wt% HF electrolytes to modify the surface morphology. The morphology, element distribution, crystal structure, roughness and energy of the surface were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive Xray spectrometry (EDS), X-ray diffractometry (XRD), atomic force microscopy (AFM) and contact angle analysis. Micro-sized pores were formed on the Ti-49.5Ni (at%) alloy surface by electrochemical etching with 1M $H_2SO_4$+ X (1.5, 2.0, 2.5) wt% HF. The volume fractions of the pores were increased by increasing the concentration of the HF electrolytes. Depending on the HF concentration, different pore sizes, heights, surface roughness levels, and surface energy levels were obtained. To investigate the osteoblast adhesion of the electrochemically etched Ti-49.5Ni (at%) alloy, a MTT test was performed. The degree of osteoblast adhesion was increased at a high concentration of HF-treated surface structures.

  • We report the electronic structure of CoFeO-R (R=Hf, La, Nb) thin films studied by x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). These ferrites thin films were prepared by pulsed laser deposition method and characterized by XAS measurements at O K-, Co and Fe L-edges. The O K-edge spectra suggest that there is a strong hybridization between O 2p and 3d electrons of transition metal cations and Fe $L_{3,2}$-edge spectra indicate that Fe-ions exist in $Fe^{2+}$ with tetrahedral site of the spinel structure. Divalent Co ions is also distributed in tetrahedral site with rare earth ions goes to octahedral sites of spinel structure. X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) is also used to explain the symmetry and magnetic nature dependence on rare-earth ions.

  • Flame propagation in a four-valve spark-ignition optical engine was visualized under lean-bum conditions with A/F=18 at 2000rpm. The early flame development in a four-valve pentroof-chamber single-cylinder engine was examined with imaging of the laser-induced Mie scattered light using an image-intensified CCD camera. Flame profiles along the line-of-sight were also visualized through a quartz piston window. Two-dimensional flame structures were visualized with a Proxitronic HF-1 fast motion camera system by Mie scattering from titanium dioxide particles along a planar laser sheet generated by a copper vapor laser. The flame propagation images were subsequently analysed with an image processing programme to obtain information about the flame structure under different tumble flow conditions generated by sleeved and non-sleeved intake ports. This allowed enhancement of the flame images and calculation of the enflamed area, and the displacement of its center, as a function of the tumble flow induced by the pentroof-chamber in the vicinity of spark plug. Image processing of the early flame development quantified the correlation between flame and flow characteristics near the spark plug at the time of ignition which has been known to be one of the most important factors in cyclic combustion variations in lean-burn engines. The results were also compared with direct flame images obtained from the natural flame luminosity of the lean mixture.

  • The $BaHfO_3$ (BHO) buffer layer on the IBAD MgO template was turned to be effective for a successful fabrication of $GdBa_2Cu_3O_{7-{\delta}}$ (GdBCO) films with high critical current density ($J_c$). Both the BHO buffer layers and GdBCO films were prepared by pulsed laser deposition (PLD). The effects of the PLD conditions, including substrate temperature ($T_s$), oxygen partial pressure ($PO_2$), and deposition time on the in-plane texture, surface roughness, and microstructures of the BHO buffer layers on the IBAD MgO template were systematically studied for processing optimization. The c-axis oriented growth of BHO layers was insensitive to the deposition temperature and the film thickness, while the in-plane texture and surface roughness of those were improved with increasing $T_s$ from 700 to $800^{\circ}C$. On the optimally processed BHO buffer layer, the highest $J_c$ value (77 K, self-field) of 3.68 $MA/cm^2$ could be obtained from GdBCO film deposited at $780^{\circ}C$, representing that BHO is a strong candidate for the buffer layer on the IBAD MgO template.

  • Micromachining of photosensitive glass by UV exposure, heat treatment, and etching processes is reported. Like photoresist, the photosensitive glass is also classified into positive and negative types by development characteristics. For the positive type, the exposed area is crystallized and etched away during the etching process in HF solution, whereas the unexposed area is crystallized and etched away for the negative type. The crystallized area of the photosensitive glass has an etch rate approximately 30~100 times faster than that of the amorphous area so that it becomes possible to fabricate microstructures in the glass. Based on the unique properties of glass such as high optical transparency, electrical insulation, and chemical/thermal stability, the glass micromachining technique introduced in this work could be widely applied to various devices in the fields of electronics, bio engineering, nanoelectonics and so on.

  • The purpose of this experiment was to determine the effects of etching with a Nd : YAG Laser on dentin, or porcelain surface on the bond strength with composite resin. The dentin specimens were devided into the following 4 groups. D1 : No treatment D2 : Etched with 10% phosphoric acid D3 : Laser etchded with 1W, 20PPs D4 : Laser etched with 2W, 20PPS The procelain specimens were devided into the following 4 groups. P1 : diamond roughened P2 : etched with HF acid P3 : Laser etched with 2W, 20PPS P4 : Laser etched with 3W, 20PPS All specimens were veneered with resin. One half of the specimens were stored in $37^{\circ}C$ water for one day and the other half were thermocycled 1000 times at temperature of $5^{\circ}C\;to\;55^{\circ}C$ at 20 seconds intervals. After that, the bonding strength of composite resin to the dentin and porcelain was measured. The surface treated state and fractured state were observed with SEM. The following results were obtained. 1. In the dentin specimens, the bond strength of group D2 was highter than that of groups D1 and D3 in the case of the specimens stored in $37^{\circ}C$ water for one day, there was a statistically significant difference between group D2 and D1, D3 (P<0.05). The bonding strength of the specimens that were thermocycled decreased in the following order : group D2,D4,D3 and then D1. 2. In the porcelain specimens, the bonding strength of groups P1,P2 were higher than that of group P3 in the case of the specimens stored in $37^{\circ}C$ water for one day (P<0.05). The bonding strength of the specimens of being thermocycled decreased in the following order : group P2,P1,P4 and then P3. 3. The groups of high bond strength had a rougher surface and a high level of microporosity with SEM findings.

  • The aim of this study was to evaluate protein expression patterns of liver in response to subacute ruminal acidosis (SARA) induced by high-concentrate diet. Sixteen healthy mid-lactating goats were randomly divided into 2 groups and fed either a high-forage (HF) diet or a high-concentrate (HC) diet. The HC diet was expected to induce SARA. After ensuring the occurrence of SARA, liver samples were collected. Proteome analysis with differential in gel electrophoresis technology revealed that, 15 proteins were significantly modulated in liver in a comparison between HF and HC-fed goats. These proteins were found mainly associated with metabolism and energy transfer after identified by matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization/time of flight. The results indicated that glucose, lipid and protein catabolism could be enhanced when SARA occurred. It prompted that glucose, lipid and amine acid in the liver mainly participated in oxidation and energy supply when SARA occurred, which possibly consumed more precursors involved in milk protein and milk fat synthesis. These results suggest new candidate proteins that may contribute to a better understanding of the mechanisms that mediate liver adaptation to SARA.

  • Al doped ZnO (AZO) thin films were deposited on Si substrates with rod-shaped-surface by pulsed laser deposition method (PLD). Si-rods were prepared through chemical etching. To analyze the influence on the formation of the rod structure, samples with various chemical etching conditions such as AgNO3/HF ratio, etching time, and solution temperature were prepared. The morphology of Si-rod structures were examined by FE-SEM. Fig. 1 shows a typical structure of n-AZO/p-Si-rod juncions. The fabricated n-AZO/p-Si-rod devices exhibited p-n diode current-voltage characteristics. We compared the I-V characteristics of n-AZO/p-Si-rod devices with the samples without Si-rod structure.
