  • Long-term performance of smooth and textured type HDPE geomembranes which were used to the liner and slope systems of waste landfills was examined. Artificial surface defects were added to the surface of geomembranes by scratch addition apparatus specially designed. The mechanical and frictional properties, chemical and ultra violet light resistances and oxidative induction time(OIT) of geomembranes were examined for the cases of defective/non-defective surfaces. Frictional properties of textured type geomembranes showed more excellent than those of smooth type geomembranes. Finally, it was known that the long-term performance of non-defective and textured geomembranes was better than that of defective geomembranes through chemical and UV resistance and OIT tests etc.

  • Two smooth and textured surfaced HDPE geomembranes (GMs) were cut into dumbbell shape and notched where depth of the notch produced a ligament thickness of 10% to 90% of the nominal thickness with the specimen at 10% interval. A series of laboratory simulation test for installation damage were carried out at different loading cycles on HDPE GMs in accordance with ISO 10722 test method and the effect of number of loading cycle on installation damage was compared. It was found that yield stress and elongation at yield point decreased gradually as the notch depth was increased. Both installation damaged and notched, GMs were used to understand stress crack behavior and this behavior was observed through NCTL test at $50{\pm}1^{\circ}C$ at different yield stresses immerging in pH 4 and pH 12 buffer solutions. Over 35% tensile load, GMs became vulnerable to stress cracking. Both damaged and notched GMs showed the same trend. Especially, notched GMs showed less strength than installation damaged GMs at every stress cracking test condition.

  • HDPE smooth and textured GMs were cut into dumbbell shape and notched where depth of the notch produced a ligament thickness of 90% to 10% of the nominal thickness of the specimen at 10% interval. Yield stress and elongation were measured of those samples and plotted on Graph. Yield stress and elongation at yield point decreases gradually as the notch depth is increased. Both installations damaged and notched GMs were used to understand stress crack behavior. Intact sample were notched in such a manner that the depth of notch produced a ligament thickness of 80% of the nominal thickness of the specimen. Installation damaged samples were not notched. Stress Crack Resistance behavior was observed using NCTL Test at $50{\pm}1^{\circ}C$ at different yield stresses immerging with pH 4 and pH 12 buffer solutions. Significant difference was observed in both cases.

  • It was found that surface roughness has a first-order effect on the interface shear strength and accordingly it should be accurately quantified if its role is to be properly understood. To quantify the surface topography, first of all, a variety of commonly used surface roughness parameters and profiling methods were reviewed in this study. Based on this review, the normalized roughness parameter. $R_n$(Uesugi and Kishida, 1986), the profile roughness parameter, $R_L$, and the surface roughness parameter, $R_n$(Dove and Frost, 1996), were selected to be appropriate candidates of roughness parameters and the digital image analysis based Optical Profile Microscopy(OPM) method(Dove and Frost, 1996) to be an appropriate profiling method for this study. Using a smooth and three textured HDPE geomembranes which encompass the range of textures and texture patterns commonly used, a series of roughness measurements on virgin and previously used geomembranes were performed. The results showed that both $R_L\; and\; R_S$ values appropriately reflect the degree of texturing for the geomembranes used in this study, however, $R_n$ value showed limited ranges of variation which may not be sufficient to permit distinction between roughness values for certain conditions. The results of this study will be extended to the investigation of the influence of surface roughness on interface strength in future study.

  • In this paper the effect of UV (ultraviolet) exposure on HDPE (high density polyethylene)-smooth and f-PP (flexible polypropylene) geomembranes is evaluated under UVB-313 (ultraviolet wavelength 290-315 nm) exposure. Tensile property, melt flow index (MFI), oxidation induction time (OIT), both standard-OIT and high pressure-OIT and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy/attenuated total reflectance (FTIR/ATR) results are discussed. Although tensile properties of the exposed geomembrane samples remained unchanged, the depletion of antioxidants was found higher for f-PP than for HDPE geomembrane. Arrhenius model by extrapolation was used on the data to predict the antioxidant lifetime to a typical site temperature of $20^{\circ}C$. There was no significant difference between the MFI value of the virgin and UV exposed HDPE geomembrane samples but a decrease in MFI was found in f-PP geomembrane that signifies that crosslinking has occurred. From FTIR spectra, the small peak (near $1750\;cm^{-1}$) observed in the spectrum of UV exposed sample corresponds to a carbonyl (C=O) linkage, which suggests that oxidation has occurred in the polymer structure, and another new band for f-PP between 3100 and $3500\;cm^{-1}$ is attributed to a hydroxyl bond and/or hydroperoxide bond.
