The recording density of a hard disk drive is increasing so rapidly that the storage capacity of a commercial HDD in PC reaches several hundred giga bytes recently. Many technologies related to the HDD, such as servo, media, actuator dynamics, thermo and fluid dynamics, etc. must be developed together to realize high recording density. Especially, researches in the airflow inside the HDD cavity become important as the rotational speed of a disk increases. Typical problem due to the airflow is the vibration of an actuator as the airflow collides with an I-block, suspensions and sliders, that is, FIV(Flow Induced Vibration). This problem is one of the significant sources of increasing TMR so that it must be resolved. In this research, a disk damper shape has been modified to minimize the effects of airflow on the actuator. Modified disk dampers which change flow field inside HDD cavity show good effects not only on the disk (tufter but also on the vibration of an actuator. Vibrations of E- block and slider have been measured with LDV and the airflow field inside the HDD cavity has been analyzed using a commercial package to verify these effects.

This paper relates to the flexural vibration analysis of the hard disk drive (HDD) spindle systems by means of the finite element method. In contrast to previous researches, every system componebt is here analytically modeled taking into account its flexibility and also the centrifugal effect particularly for the disk. To prove the effectiveness and accuracy of the proposed method, commercial HDD spindle systems with two and three identical disks are chosen as examples. Then, their major flexural natural modes are computed employing only a small number of element meshes as the shaft rotaional speed is varied, and compared with the bumerical or experimental results.
Recently, the shock resistance and dynamic characteristics of hard disk drives have become more important due to their highly increased storage density and miniaturization. In this study, we have developed an ANSYS/Mechanical/LS-DYNA based HDD vibration/shock simulation tool for design engineers. This simulation tool using ANSYS APDL can produce a parametric finite element modeling of HDD automatically and has GUI-based applications using the script program language Tcl/Tk. In the present tool, we adopt the reliable methodology of vibration/shock simulation, which is experimentally verified. It is expected that this simulation tool can make the repetitive computational efforts for the shock-proof design of HDD drastically reduced.
The use of magnetoresistive (MR) head requires much tighter control of particle contamination in a drive since loose particles on the disk surface will generate thermal asperities (TA). In this study, a spinoff test was performed to investigate the adhesion and removal capability of a particle to disk surface. Numerical simulation was also performed to investigate dominant factor of particle detachment and to support experimental results. It was shown that particles are detached from the disk surface by the moment derived from the centrifugal force and the drag force and that the centrifugal force and capillary force are the dominant force, which determines spin-off of a particle on the disk surface. Removal of particles smaller than several micrometers, which are the main source of TA generation, is extremely difficult since the adhesion forces exceed the centrifugal force. Lubricant types and manufacturing process also influence the particle removal. Lower bonding ratio and lower viscosity of the lubricant will help to increase the removal rate of the particles from the disk surface.

Reliability of a hard disk drive depends on the head disk interface (HDI) characteristics. Particularly, the disk media and the head can be damaged due to contact between the two components during operation. The contact may occur due to particles being introduced into the disk/slider interface or due to direct contact between the slider and the disk. Such contacts may be induced by external vibration or abnormal operation of the HDI. In this work the characteristics of scratches generated on the disk surface were investigated. The scratches were generated by impacting the hard disk. The type of scratches was analyzed with respect to their shape and dimensions.
In magnetic hard disk drives, higher areal recording density requires reduction of head-disk spacing. To overcome the increase of stiction associated with reduction of head-disk spacing, a padder slider, which adds pads to slider's air bearing surface, can be one of the practical solution for sub 20 nm flying height, and even for near contact recording. This study investigated the tribological characteristics of a padder slider. A padder slider took off slowly but showed less friction force than a normal slider. The hot/dry CSS test and drag test indicated that pad wear of a padder slider was negligible. The tribological performance of disk is an important factor to be considered. In particular, less carbon overcoat layer of the disk will result in higher stiction and wear in slider/disk interface. In conclusion, a padder slider shows encouraging tribological performances for practical use in HDD.

This research proposes a finite element method to determine the natural vibration characteristics of the spinning disk-spindle system in a HDD including the flexibility of supporting structure. Finite element equations of each substructure are derived with the introduction of consistent variables to satisfy the geometric compatibility at the internal boundaries. The natural frequencies and modes from the global asymmetric matrix equations of motion are determined by using the implicit restarted Arnoldi iteration method. The validity of the proposed method is verified by the experimental modal testing. It also shows that the flexibility of base plate plays an important role to determine the natural frequencies of the spinning disk-spindle system in a HDD.
Hard disk drive(HDD) consists of a head/slider system which flies over the magnetic disk at an extremely low height. As the density of HDD increases the flying height of the head needs to be decreased. This increases the chance for contact between the slider and the disk. This paper addresses some key issues related to surface failure characteristics of HDD. It is shown that flying behavior of the slider during contact-start-stop cycle can be analyzed based on different regimes of air film lubrication, experimental methods for identifying the underlying mechanisms and improving the reliability of HDD are discussed.

The structure of hard disk drive(HDD) is excited by dynamic motion of a disk-spindle motor, and it makes sound noise. Therefore, the cover and the base of HDD should be designed to reduce noise and vibration induced by spindle motor. The prediction technique of sound pressure level(SPL) of a given structural shape enables us to design a cover and a base with much less vibration and noise. In this paper, we measured the force of disk-spindle motor and predicted SPL from HDD by computational simulation. To get a SPL of HDD by computational simulation, modal analysis and forced vibration analysis were performed with ANSYS, and sound radiation was computed using SYSNOISE. The calculated results were compared with experimental results and a good agreement was obtained. With this computer simulation procedure and design of experiment(DOE), optimal thickness of noise barrier and damper was calculated.
This paper introduces the design of high-speed analog-to-digital converter for hard disk drive (HDD) read channel. This is based on autozero technique for low-error rate, and Double Speed Dual ADC(DSDA) technique lot efficiently increasing the conversion speed of A/D converter. This An is designed by 6bit resolution, 800M sample/s maximum conversion rate, 390㎽ power dissipation, one clock cycle latency in 0.65 $\mu\textrm{m}$ CMOS technology.
