Formation and Control of Calcium Carbonate Films having Aragonite Crystal Structure by Electro-Chemical Process (전기화학적 프로세스에 의한 아라고나이트 결정구조 탄산칼슘 막의 형성 및 제어)

  • Calcium carbonate($CaCO_3$) films were formed by an eco-friendly electro-chemical technique on steel substrates in synthesized distilled water solutions containing $NaHCO_3$, $CaCl_2$ and $MgCl_2$ with different ratio respectively. It was investigated to confirm the effect of $Mg^{2+}$ concentration by Scanning Electron Microscopy(SEM), Energy Dispersive x-ray Spectroscopy(EDS) and X-Ray Diffraction(XRD) respectively. From an experimental result, only calcite crystals were found in solution containing no $Mg^{2+}$. By increasing concentration of $Mg^{2+}$, deposition rate decreased and crystal structure was transformed form calcite to aragonite. In case of including $MgCl_2$ 300mM in synthesized solutions containing $NaHCO_3$, $CaCl_2$ 60mM, it was showed over the 90% of aragonite contents which have quite high deposition rate of aragonite. Also, it was confirmed that $Mg^{2+}$ acted as inhibitor on the films which made transforming from calcite to aragonite.

  • Polyethylenimine-crosslinked chitin (PEI-chitin) was developed as a biosorbent to effectively remove dyestuffs from dye-containing wastewater. A representative reactive dye, Reactive Orange 16 (RO16) was used as a model dye. The effect of pH, isotherm, kinetic and desorption experiments were performed to evaluate the adsorption/desorption ability of PEI-chitin for RO16. As a result, the maximum adsorption capacity calculated by the Langmuir model was 266.3 mg/g at pH 2, and the time needed for adsorption equilibrium was evaluated to be about 20, 60, and 240 min for 50, 100, and 200 mg/L, respectively. The desorption experiments were carried out using various eluents such as ammonia/ethanol mixture, NaOH, $NaHCO_3$, and $Na_2CO_3$, and the highest desorption rate was 75.24% in the ammonia/ethanol mixture.

  • Removal characteristics of $H^{14}CO_3$ ion from IRN-150 mixed resin contaminated with $^{14}C$ radionuclide and a gasification behavior of $^{14}C$ radionuclide to $^{14}CO_2$ were investigated. The stripping solutions used for the removal of $^{14}C$ from spent resin were $NaNO_3,\;Na_3PO_4,\;NH_4H_2PO_4,\;H_3PO_4$. The influence of stripping solution concentration on the desorption characteristics of inactive $HCO_3$ ion into stripping solution from IRN-150 mixed resin and the gasification of this ion to $CO_2$ was analyzed. The gasification behavior to $CO_2$ by using NaOH, $HNO_3$, HCl was also compared to that of phosphate solution. Real spent resin stored in Wolsung nuclear power plant was used to evaluate the gasification characteristics of $^{14}C$ radionuclide to $^{14}CO_2$. Gamma radionuclides such as $^{137}Cs,\;^{60}Co$ in residual striping solutions after desorption experiment were analyzed.

  • To study the printing behaviors of Polyester and cotton(P/C) fabrics printed with disperse and reactive dyes, the effects of alkalis on the fixation of reactive dyes and the alkali-stability of disperse dyes in various methods of fixation were examined. The anthraquinone disperse dyes which have diamino derivatives as substituents without hydroxy group, such as C.I. Disperse Violet 1(D.V.1), C.I. Disperse Violet 28(D.V.28) and C.I.Disperse Blue 60(D.B.60) showed good results of fixation without regard to the concentration of NaHCO$_3$. In case of high temperature steaming(HTS) and unsaturated steaming(US)/HTS, D.V. 1 was alkali-stable and effective for P/C printing. A good result was obtained with D.V.1 and C.I.Reactive Orange 13(R.O.13) paste of 4% $K_{2}CO_{3}$. It was found that the unfixed D.V.28 bearing chloro group can hinder the fixation of monochlorotriaxinyl reactive dyes, and D.B.60 made little stain on 100% cotton. In thermosol(Tm), the dye uptake of D.V.1 was not decreased so much, but those of D.V.28 and D.B.60 were greatly decreased.

Influence of Various Acids Added to Irrigation Water on the Reduction of Bicarbonate Injury during Vegetative Propagation of 'Seolhyang' Strawberry (관개수에 첨가되는 산 종류가 영양생장 중인 '설향' 딸기의 중탄산 피해 경감에 미치는 영향)

  • This research was conducted to investigate the influence of different kinds of acids added to irrigation water containing high levels of bicarbonate on the growth and daughter plant production during the propagation of 'Seolhyang' strawberry. Fertigation solution was prepared with equal concentrations of essential nutrients as found in Hoagland solution, plus $240mg{\cdot}L^{-1}\;HCO_3{^-}$. The concentrations of $HCO_3{^-}$ in the treatment solution were decreased to $60mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ by the addition of $HNO_3$, $H_3PO_4$, $H_2SO_4$, $HNO_3+H_3PO_4$, or salicylic acid. The mother plants transplanted to raised beds were treated with a specific treatment solution for 126 days and growth and daughter plant productions were monitored. The fresh weight of mother plants in the -control treatment ($240mg{\cdot}L^{-1}\;HCO_3{^-}$) was significantly lower than those in acid containing treatments. The number of daughter plants produced per mother plant was 13 in the -control treatment, but 19.4, 20.1, 18.6, 22.4, and 18.9 in the treatments of $HNO_3$, $H_3PO_4$, $H_2SO_4$, $HNO_3+H_3PO_4$ and salicylic acid, respectively. The substrate pHs after 126 days of treatment were 8.2 and 7.3 in the -control and salicylic acid treatments, respectively, but 5.5, 5.4, 5.3, and 5.5 in the treatments of $HNO_3$, $H_3PO_4$, $H_2SO_4$, and $HNO_3+H_3PO_4$ treatments, respectively. The tissue Ca and Mg contents of mother plants were significantly higher in +control ($90mg{\cdot}L^{-1}\;HCO_3{^-}$) and various acid blending treatments compared to the -control treatment. By contrast, Ca and Mg contents were not significantly different among treatments with acids. The Fe, Mn, Zn, and Cu contents in plant tissue of -control were also significantly lower than those in all other treatments.

The studies on wrinkle recovery improvement for silk fabrics (견직물의 방추성 개선연구)

  • This experiment is to improve the wrinkle recovery (W.R.) of silk fabrics. The silk fabrics is creased very well, and the crease is the serious defection of it. This experiment is to improve the nature by use of formaldehyde on fabrics. The reagents used were HCl, CH$_3$COOH, CaC$_2$, HCHO, Na$_2$CO$_3$, NH$_4$OH, NaOH and NaHCO$_3$. The silk fabrics was treated, to compare 1 he influence of conditions, by varying the quantities of reagents and the temperature of solution, and the reaction time. The cotton fabrics and the viscose rayon were sunk with the silk at the same condition to be compared the influence. 1) Those of the most suitable temperature to improve for the better W.R. are 75$^{\circ}C$ for silk, 35-45$^{\circ}C$ for cotton, and no particular temperature under 75$^{\circ}C$ for viscose rayon. 2) The W.R. improvements after treated at the temperature of 1) were 11% for silk and 33.4% for cotton. 3) There are the best treating time for every fabrics. They were 60 to 90 min. for viscose rayon when HAC Ras used for solvent. It took, however, 60min. of the best time for silk, 120 min. for cotton, and 40 min. for viscose rayon when acetic anhydride instead of HAC was used. 4) It was possible to improve 16.6% of W.R. for silk at the most suitable treating time, 25.0% for cotton, and 13.3% for viscose rayon. 5) Acetic anhydride was rather more effective to improve W.R. of both silk and viscose rayon than HAC. 6) Treating time was also shorter in case of using acetic anhydride than HAC. 7) The improvement of W.R. were 8.3% for silk at the 10 to 14 ml. of HCHO the best volume, 21. 5% for cotton at 18m!. of HCHO, and 70% of for viscose rayon at 14 to 18ml. of HCHO. 8) The most effective quantity of HCI is 14 ml. for both silk and cotton. The W.R. improvement of silk was 22.2%, and that of cotton 19.5%. 9) The W.R. of 83.3% the best for silk and 61. 6% for cotton were gained when 4.2gr. of NaHCO$_3$ brings down the percent of W.R. for both silk and cotton. 10) The more NaOH and NH$_4$OH as neutralizing agents, the less effectivity of W.R. until the quantities of the reagents are reached to a special range which are 3. 3m!. for silk and 3.3-6.6 ml. for cotton, and then we can see the W.R. increasing as the quantities of reagents are increased. These facts were evident in case of silk and cotton. We can also see with this fact that the reminder of 〔OH$\^$-/〕 neutralizing 〔CH$\^$+/〕in solution makes it possible to treat formaldehyde on fabrics. 11) Low curing temperature was comparatively better for silk, and high temperature better for cotton. 12) The result of this experiment shows that the Improvement of W.R. for silk was possible to 94% which means 22% W.R. increase compared to the untreated silk. This effect also shows that the improvement to W '||'&'||' W (wash and wear) of silk will be possible.

Field Survey for Well Water Quality in Hydroponic Farms (양액재배 농가의 원수 수질 조사)

  • This survey has been conducted, mostly in inorganic ions, to get some basic data for the culture solution composition, analyzing water quality of some hydroponic farms. pH range was shown from 5.95 to 7.61 and the average of 6.75. Relatively wide range of EC, from 0.07 to 0.97 mS/cm and the average of 0.35 mS/cm were obtained. 19.5 percent of farms investigated showed over 0.5 mS/cm of EC, which means more careful culture solution composition and its management are needed in these farms. Na concentration ranged from 5.0 to 41.4 ppm and Cl concentration ranged from 10 to 99 ppm were shown and their average were 20.38 ppm and 35.16 ppm, respectively. Higher Na concentration compared to standard of 11.5 ppm was shown in 75% of farms and Higher Cl concentration compared to standard of 35.5 ppm was shown in 33.3% of farms. These concentration were considered rather high, which can cause salt accumulation in substrate mats. Ca and Mg concentrations were ranged from 1.60 to 131 ppm and 0.96 to 34.1 ppm, respectively. Average concentrations were 26.11 ppm in Ca and 8.10 ppm in Mg. In case of HCO$_3$, 24 to 295 ppm of concentration range and average of 63.13 ppm were obtained. Fe range was 0.01 to 0.87 ppm and its average was 0.14 ppm. This results showed that Fe elimination was necessary in well water.

The Stability of Emulsions Formed by Phase Inversion with Variation of HLB of Surfactant (HLB 변화와 전상유화에 의해 형성된 에멀젼의 안정성)

  • Caprylic/Capric triglyceride-in-water emulsions stabilized by Nikkol HCO-60 and HCO-10 were prepared using emulsion inversion point method at different HLB values. Emulsions with various droplet sizes were formed, and emulsion inversion point was detected by electrical conductivity. The change in emulsion droplet sizes and long term stability were monitored using laser scattering method and visual method. The droplet sizes and stability of emulsions were affected by HLB of surfactant. At emulsion inversion point, the water volume fraction increased as the HLB of surfactants decreased. According to our analysis, this resulted from a tendency of forming the W/O (water-in-oil) emulsion as the HLB of surfactants was decreased. The emulsion inversion point was clearly detected by the microscope and the electric conductivity meter. Nanometer-sized emulsion was obtained at the optimum HLB by using emulsion inversion point method. The main pattern of instability of emulsions in HLB 12 and 13 systems was Ostwald ripening. However, The patterns of instability of emulsions below 11 of HLB systems were Ostwald ripening and coalescence. All emulsions produced with surfactants in the range of HLB 8-13, creaming caused by density difference between water phase and oil phase.

A comparison of the Effects of Intravenous Fluid Warming and Skin Surface Warming on Peri-operative Body Temperature and Acid Base Balance of Elderly Patients with Abdominal Surgery (수액가온요법과 피부가온요법이 개복술 환자의 저체온 예방에 미치는 효과 비교)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of intravenous fluid warming and skin surface warming on peri-operative body temperature and acid base balance of abdominal surgical patients under general anesthesia. Method: Data collection was performed from January 4th, to May 31, 2004. The intravenous fluid warming(IFW) group(30 elderly patients) was warmed through an IV line by an Animec set to $37^{\circ}C$. The skin surface warming(SSW) group(30 elderly patients) was warmed by a circulating-water blanket set to $38^{\circ}C$ under the back and a 60W heating lamp 40 cm above the chest. The warming continued from induction of general anesthesia to two hours after completion of surgery. Collected data was analyzed using Repeated Measures ANOVA, and Bonferroni methods. Results: SSW was more effective than IFW in preventing hypothermia(p= .043), preventing a decrease of $HCO_3{^-}$(p= .000) and preventing base excess(p= .000) respectively. However, there was no difference in pH between the SSW and IFW(p= .401) groups. Conclusion: We conclude that skin surface warming is more effective in preventing hypothermia, and $HCO_3{^-}$ and base excess during general anesthesia, and returning to normal body temperature after surgery than intravenous fluid warming; however, skin surface warming wasn't able to sustain a normal body temperature in elderly patients undergoing abdominal surgery under general anesthesia.

Relationship of Radon-222 and Chemical Composition of Groundwater as a Precursor of Earthquake (지진 전조인자로서 지하수내 라돈 및 화학성분의 상관성 연구)

  • In order to study the earthquake precursor in the Korean peninsula, long-term variations of chemical composition, radon-222, and water level were measured at depths (-60 m, -100 m) in the groundwater monitoring wells of the Daejeon and the Cheongwon area. The pH and electrical conductivity of groundwater in the monitoring wells showed some relationship with the Pohang earthquake. The ${HCO_3}^-$ and $Cl^-$ concentration of groundwater in the Daejeon and $Mg^{2+}$, $Cl^-$ and ${NO_3}^-$ in the Cheongwon showed some relation with the Pohang earthquake. However, it is not distinct to find the relationship between their variation and earthquake. The radon-222 concentration in Daejeon was observed a significant increase from a minimum of 162 Bq/L prior to the earthquake to 573 Bq/L right after the earthquake, that indicating a strong correlation with earthquakes. In the case of groundwater levels, it can not find some correlation between earthquakes and continuous decreasing trend in the monitoring wells of Daejeon and Cheongwon area. However, water level of a national groundwater observation well within 10 kilometers of Pohang epicenter was recorded as an abrupt drop right before the earthquake. Conclusively, although the location of monitoring wells is more than 180 kilometers apart from the epicenter of the Pohang earthquake, the radon gas in groundwater can be considered as a reliable candidate among earthquake precursors. The pH, electrical conductivity, ${HCO_3}^-$ and $Cl^-$ among hydrochemicals showed some correlation with earthquake should be monitored during a longer term to recognize distinctly as a precursor of earthquake.
