In the course of study for a use for non-edible parts of broccoli (Brassica oleracea L), and the development of processed food utilizing these parts, edible floret and non-edible stalk were extracted with ethanol and different organic solvent fractions were prepared. With 10 different extracts and fractions, their useful components and various biological activities, such as antioxidant, antimicrobial and anti-proliferation activity, were investigated. The stalk has more abundant water soluble carbohydrate when compared with the floret, and floret has higher hexane-soluble pigments. Analysis of total flavonoid and total polyphenol contents showed that the floret has 1.5~1.99 times higher concentrations than the stalk. Among the fractions, ethylacetate (EA) fractions have the highest amount of total flavonoid and total polyphenol. The stalk and floret possessed 9.45 and 42.01 mg-total flavonoid/g, respectively. In the antioxidation activity assay, the EA fraction of floret showed strong radical scavenging activity and reducing power, while the n-hexane fraction of the stalk exhibited nitrite scavenging activity. In the antimicrobial activity assay, the EA fraction of floret showed a strong and broad-range of antibacterial activity, irrespective of gram positive or gram negative bacteria. In a while, the hexane and EA fractions revealed anti-proliferative effects against the human colorectal cancer cell HCT-116. Strong anti-proliferative activities were found in the hexane fraction of stalk (18.4% of cell viability), and the n-butanol fraction of floret (6.9% of cell viability). Our results suggest that the further study of the characterization of active fractions and the identification of active components from different parts of broccoli are needed to develop functional foods or novel plant-derived medicines.

This research was performed to assess a Fenton-like oxidation using naturally present iron in the field to treat remained oils throughout silty clay residues which finally resided even after a series of soil washing process. Biodegradability was thus tested for reaction products to investigate a possible treatment of the Fenton-like oxidation coupled with a biological treatment process. For those purposes, two types of field soil samples (e.g., dewatered cake after conditioning with a polymer and not-dewatered residue) were tested to remove TPH by adding the various concentration of hydrogen peroxide ($H_2O_2$). Moreover the biodegradability of treated samples was observed based on the ratio of $BOD_5/COD_{Cr}$ after Fenton-like oxidation. The Highest removal of TPH was at 1% of hydrogen peroxide ($H_2O_2$) when hydrogen peroxide ($H_2O_2$) was continuously injected for a period of time rather than that of spot introduction with the same amount of it. For the dewatered cake, TPH was effectively treated when the ratio of solid and water was mixed at 1 : 2. Employing cooking oil could increase solubility of TPH due to enhanced surface-active escalating TPH desorption from silty clay. Nonetheless, the biodegradability was decreased as long as the oxidation duration being extended regardless of operational conditions. It was therefore proved that Fenton-like oxidation using $H_2O_2$ and natural iron minerals was able to remove adsorbed oils in silty clay but the removal efficiency of TPH was low. And if a biological treatment process followed after Fenton-like oxidation, microorganisms would need enough time for acclimation.

The headspace solid-phase microextraction (HS-SPME) followed by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry procedure has been developed for the simultaneous determination of petroleum aromatic hydrocarbons such as benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylene isomers (BTEX) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in seawater. The advantages of SPME compared to traditional methods of sample preparation are ease of operation, reuse of fiber, portable system, minimal contamination and loss of the sample during transport and storage. SPME fiber, extraction time, temperature, stirring speed, and GC desorption time were key extraction parameters considered in this study. Among three kinds of SPME fibers, i.e., PDMS ($100{\mu}m$), CAR/PDMS ($75{\mu}m$), and PDMS/DVB ($65{\mu}m$), a $65{\mu}m$ PDMS/DVB fiber showed the most optimal extraction efficiencies covering molecular weight ranging from 78 to 202. Other extraction parameters were set up using $65{\mu}m$ PDMS/DVB. The final optimized extraction conditions were extraction time (60 min), extraction temperature (50), stirring speed (750 rpm) and GC desorption time (3 min). When applied to artificially contaminated seawater like water accommodated fraction, our optimized HS-SPME-GC/MS showed comparable performances with other conventional method. The proposed protocol can be an attractive alternative to analysis of BTEX and PAHs in seawater.
The alluvial aquifer, widely developed near the four major rivers such as Nakdong River, can be used effectively for groundwater artificial recharge and is expected to be the future water resources in Korea. This study is aimed at examining the impact of repeatedly injected river water into the riverside alluvial aquifer on injection rate or efficiency in its system at Changweon area. For this, injection tests were performed two times, first on June 19 and second on September 25 through October 9, 2013, and the mixing ratios of river water to groundwater were used as the tool to compare the efficiency of injection. The mixing ratios were evaluated by using electrical conductivities of injected river water (average $EC=303{\mu}S/cm$) and groundwater ($EC{\fallingdotseq}6,000{\mu}S/cm$) measured at 20 m depth of four observation wells installed 10 m apart from each injection well. The result shows the remarkable differences on two respects. First, in some observation well, detection time for incipient injection effect during $2^{nd}$ injection test was shown to be much slower than that of $1^{st}$ injection test. Second, the hourly increasing rate of mixing ratios in $2^{nd}$ test was revealed to be reduced much more than that of $1^{st}$ test. This means that the efficiency of injection was badly deteriorated by only 1,210 minute injection work. Therefore, injection water needs to be adequately treated beforehand and repeated pumping work and/or resting phase is needed afterwards. To a certain extent, the improvement of water quality in saline aquifer was verified in this system by injection tests.
To investigate the effects of paper sludge on seasonal variations of volatile lower fatty acids in paddy soil, paper sludge was applied to pots at the rate of either 300, 600, 900 or 1,200 kg/l0a which was either preadjusted at a C/N ratio of 30 : 1 or not adjusted. The decomposition rate of paper sludge, the evolution of $CO_2$, and the fractions of volatile lower fatty acids in the soil were determined. The results are summarized as follows: 1. Paper sludge was decomposed to $35{\sim}44%$, and its C/N ratio was $55{\sim}82$, respectively, at 120 days after treatment. 2. The evolution of $CO_2$, in the soil was proportional to the amount of paper sludge added. Significant positive correlations were observed the $CO_2$ evolution was compared with the decomposition rate of paper sludge, and volatile fatty acid contents in soil. 3. Acetic, propionic, butyric, i-butyric, valeric and i-valeric acids were identified in all the soils investigated. The content of the total volatile fatty acids in the soil increased with as the application of paper sludge increased. The formation of the acids was the highest at 25 days after treatment, and thereafter the contents of the acids decreased as time elapsed. 4. The volatile fatty acids in the soil inhibited the growth of paddy rice in early stages. The contents of acetic, propionic and i-valeric acids in the soil negatively, correlated with the uptake of N, $P_2O_5$, $K_2O$, CaO, MgO and $SiO_2$ in the paddy rice at 25 days after transplantation. In addition, the uptake of $P_2O_5$ and CaO in the paddy rice negatively correlated with the content of butyric acid in the soil. 5. The content of total volatile fatty acids positively correlated with the content of $Fe^{++}$ and $Mn^{++}$ in the soil at 25 days after transplantation. A significantly positive correlation was observed between $Fe^{++}$ and acetic acid contents in the soil.
To investigate the water quality status of agricultural water source for greenhouse area in Gyeongnam, the surface water quality was examined six times from October in 1995 to March in 1996 at five areas in Gyeongnam. The pH values of surface water were in the range of 6.6${\sim}$9.1 pH in Kimhae and Changnyong areas were out of range in 6.0${\sim}$8.5 which was water quality standard for agriculture. The DO values of surface water were relatively high with average 10.0mg/l in Kimhae, Changnyong, Sacheon and Chinju areas except for Haman area. The BOD values of surface water exceeded water quality standard for agriculture(8.0mg/l) in three sites and one site in Haman and Sacheon, respectively. The COD values of surface water exceeded water quality standard for agriculture(8.0mg/l) in Kimhae, Changnyong and Haman. The ${NH_4}^+-N$ values in surface water of Changnyong and Haman areas were 1.21mg/l and 2.75mg/l, respectively. The average values of $NO_3\;^--N$ in surface water was appropriate for agriculture. The values of $K^+,\;Na^+,\;Mg^{2+},\;Ca^{2+},\;{PO_4}^{3-}$ and $SO_4^{2-}$ in Haman were the highest of those of the others. And Pb was below 0.1mg/l which was water quality standard for agriculture. The average values of Cu, Cd and Zn were below water quality standard for agriculture. Between COD and SS in surface water was positively correlated with r$=0.799^{{\ast}{\ast}}$. BOD in surface water was positively correlated with $NH_4\;^+-N,\;PO_4\;^{3-},\;SS,\;K^+,\;Na^+$ and $Cl^-$. Surface water pollution status of agricultural water source of greenhouse areas in Gyeongnam was in order of Chinju< Sacheon< Kimhae< Changnyong< Haman area.

BACKGROUND: Radish (Raphanus sativus L.) is cultivated worldwide and one of important vegetables in Korea where year-round production of radish is possible. Most of radishes in autumn are cultivated with double-row spacing except for Gangwon-do where sing-row spacing is predominant. However, no research has been conducted on double-row spacing in radish cultivation so far. This study was conducted to reveal the optimum double-row spacing in autumn cultivation of radish. METHODS AND RESULTS: Using top two popular autumn radish cultivars 'S' and 'C', seeds were sown in spacing between rows of $55{\times}25$, $45{\times}25$, $35{\times}25$ and $25{\times}25cm$, and that within rows of $35{\times}28$, $35{\times}25$, $35{\times}22$ and $35{\times}19cm$. Plants were harvested 58 days after sowing and leaf weight, length and number, and root weight, length sugar content and pithiness were investigated. In the spacing between rows, no significant difference was observed in leaf weight, length and number in both cultivars; however, 25 cm of spacing between rows significantly reduced the root length and weight in 'S' and 'C' cultivars, respectively. In spacing within rows, 28, 25 and 22 cm did not affect fresh root weight in both cultivars, producing appropriate radish roots of 1,500g on average. However, 19 cm of spacing within rows did not reduced fresh root weight in 'S' cultivar but did significantly in 'C' cultivar (1148.3 g). Sugar contents and pithiness of roots were also affected by spacing but its effect was very small and different between cultivars. CONCLUSION: It is suggested that optimum double-row spacing in autumn radish cultivation is 35 cm and 22 cm of spacing between and within rows, respectively, the spacing that did not reduce the yield and quality of radish roots in two popular autumn radish cultivars.
Behavior and decomposition velocity of pollutants on various forms from domestic sewage in sewage treatment plant were investigated in order to obtain the basic data for improving the removal efficiency of pollutants and to reduce the area in constructed wetland by natural purification method. The removal amounts of BODs and CODs in aerobic bed were significantly higher than those of the other beds. In aerobic bed, the removal amounts of IBOD and ICOD were more than those for SBOD and SCOD, respectively, whereas the removal amounts of BODs and CODs in anoxic and anaerobic beds were little different. The removal amounts of SSs in aerobic bed were also higher than those for the other beds, and the removal amounts of VSS in all beds were more than those for FSS. The removal amounts of DTN and DTP in all beds were more than those for STN and STP, respectively. In addition, the decomposition velocities of TBOD, TCOD and TSS in aerobic bed were 30.79, 17.15 and 29.96 $day^{-1}$. Moreover, the decomposition velocities of BODs, CODs and SSs in aerobic bed were very rapid than those in the other beds. On the other hand, the decomposition velocities of BODs, CODs and SSs in anoxic and anaerobic beds were a little different regardless of the forms of pollutant. The decomposition velocities constants of T-N in aerobic, anoxic and anaerobic beds were 4.78, 0.12 and 0.10 $day^{-1}$, respectively. Moreover, the decomposition velocities constants of T-P in aerobic, anoxic and anaerobic beds were 13.09, 0.12 and 0.13 $day^{-1}$ respectively. The decomposition velocity of T-Ns and T-Ps in aerobic bed were slightly rapid than those in the other beds, whereas the decomposition velocities of T-Ns and T-Ps in anoxic and anaerobic beds were slightly different regardless of the forms of pollutant.

Purpose : ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) reconstruction using achilles allograft was done for whom ACL injured person in recreational sports activity. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the clinical results and return to their sports activity in these patients. Materials and Methods : ACL injured 56 amateur athletes who had experienced sports 3 times a week more than 5 years, reconstructed with Achilles allograft, and it was analyzed subjective and objective parameter, Tegner scoring, Telos stress arthrometer, Lysholm Knee Scoring System and modified Feagin scoring system. The average age was 25 years old (range: 18$\~$49), the average follow up period was 15 months (range: 12$\~$19). Morbid sports were football (29 cases), basket ball (14 cases), badminton (5 cases), tennis (3 cases), squash (2 cases) and otherwise (3 cases). Result : The mean Lysholm Knee Scoring System was improved to 88.2 from 60. Telos arthrometer in anterior stress test revealed 2.3 mm improved from 7.1 mm. The modified Feagin scoring system showed 50 cases (89$\%$) with excellent and good results. We had obtained 12 cases (21$\%$) of Tegner score VI, 32 cases (57$\%$) of score V, 20 cases (35%$\%$ of score IV, 3 (5.3$\%$) cases of score III. Conclusions : Reconstruction of anterior cruciate ligaments can restore stability sufficient to allow sports activity in ACL injured patients, but it’s difficult to achieve 'normal' sports activity. So we will have to solve the reasons of this dissatisfaction at furthermore.

Purpose: In this prospective, randomized study, we compared the results of early motion versus conventional immobilization after the arthroscopic Bankart repair. Materilal and Methods : We performed an arthroscopic Bankart repair using suture anchors in 62 patients with traumatic anterior shoulder instability and randomized them into two groups; Group 1 (n=28; mean age, 28 years) underwent three-week of immobilization and conventional rehabilitation program, while Group 2 (n=34; mean age, 29 years) underwent an accelerated rehabilitation program with staged range of motion and strengthening exercises starting from the immediate postoperative day. Selected patients were non-athletes with a classic Bankart lesion and a robust labrum. Analysis of outcome included pain scores (6-week and follow-up: 31(9 months), range of motion, return to activity, recurrence, patients’ satisfaction with each program, and shoulder scores (ASES, UCLA, and Rowe). Results : The recurrent rate was not different between the two groups (2 anterior apprehension from each group) (p=0.842). Patients with accelerated rehabilitation resumed functional range-of-motion faster and returned earlier to the functional level of activity (p<0.05). Accelerated rehabilitation decreased postoperative pain and more patients were satisfied with this program (p<0.05). No differences were found between the two groups at the follow-up with regards to the shoulder scores, return to activity, pain score, and the range-of-motion. Conclusions : Early mobilization after arthroscopic Bankart repair does not increase the recurrence rate in selected patients. Although the final outcomes are similar in both groups, the accelerated rehabilitation program promotes functional recovery and reduces postoperative pain, which enables patients an early institution of desired activities.
