  • The objective of this research is to study the ultimate moment capacity of the connections between steel I-beams and concrete-filled steel tube columns using different stiffener configurations. The main parameters considered are column cross section shape, square or circular, and filling the column with concrete. This analytical study includes finite element models using ANSYS program taking geometric and material nonlinearities into consideration. These models are verified against the experimental results obtained from previous researches and current design guides. The results show that using proper stiffener configuration affects the stress distribution through the connection and increases the ultimate moment capacity of the connections. Also, circular column is advantageous than the square column for all stiffener configurations and dimensions.

  • In this study the seismic performance of welded steel moment connections to built-up box columns in the existing building built before 1994 Northridge earthquake was evaluated by cyclic tests. According to the test results, the pre-Northridge steel moment connections to the box columns also suffered from brittle fracture similar to that in the H-shaped column connections. However, the flange force transfer mechanism of the box column connections was substantially different from that of the H-shaped column connections, and the patterns of crack propagation may be changed due to the shape of the box column. Therefore, it is required to develop proper details for the box column connections instead of using the research results for H-shaped column connections in order to enhance the seismic performance the connections.

  • Construction of buildings downtown is increasing as much as ever with a strong demand. A Top-Down Method is suitable for its advantage in minimizing its disturbance to the neighborhood. In general, the Pre-founded Column, one of the most important aspects of the Top-Down Method, has been made with an H-Shape Steel Column. However, due to its structural and economical benefits, the usage of CFT(Concrete Filled Tube) columns in the place of Pre-founded Columns is increasing. To promote their applications, we analyze the merits of CFT columns by comparing them with I-Shape columns and propose further research.

  • Steel Reinforced Concrete (SRC) composite column has several advantage such as excellent durability, rapid construction, reduction of column section. Due to these aspect, applications of SRC columns to bridge piers are continuously increasing. For the design of relatively large SRC columns for bridge piers, it is necessary to check the current design provisions which were based on small section having higher steel ratio. In this study, seven concrete encased composite columns were fabricated and static tests were performed. Embedded steel members were a H-shape rolled beam and a partially filled steel tube. Based on the test results, the ultimate strength according to section details and local behavior were estimated. For the analysis of inelastic behavior of the SRC column, the cracked section stiffness of the columns was evaluated and compared with calculations. The stiffness of the cracked section showed that 25% of the initial value and this stiffness reduction occurred at 85% of the ultimate load in the experiments.

  • This paper aims to evaluate the yield stress of SM570TMC concrete-filed H-shape steel columns subjected to axial force. These columns were evaluated and compared using quasi-static tests. The displacements and the axial loads column specimens were measured during the tests, and test results showed that the yield stress of concrete-filed H-shape steel columns subjected to axial load could be predicted using the previously proposed yield stress of steel columns.

  • This paper presents the experimental result of Reinforced Concrete column-steel beam joint connected by Band Plates(BP). Main parameters in the test are the shape of BP and thickness of plate. Ten interior and exterior RC column-steel beam joint specimens are designed. Cyclic loads are applied to the beam end of eight specimens (four interior specimens and four exterior specimens). To evaluate the cyclic effect, monotonic loads are acted for two specimens. All specimen showed similar failure pattern such as the plate of BP get torn after the large deformation. Even though the specimen with double cross type BP has lower strength than the specimen with single cross type BP, the energy dissipation capacity of the specimen turned out high. Thus, provided the strength of joint with double cross type to be designed to have suitable strength by increasing the thickness of plate, the joint system may show higher seismic capacity.

  • The steel tube of Concrete-Filled Tube(CFT) confines the concrete and the concrete restrains the buckling of the tube, The objective of this study is to investigate the influences of the opening shape of the through diaphragm in case of the rectangular CFT column-to-beam connection through the structural experiment. The experiment results are compared with analysis results obtained by using the FEM program. These results are shown that strength of the rectangular CFT column-to-beam connection have similar structural performance regardless of the opening shape if opening areas of the through diaphragm are same. Also in case the connection area/shape of the through diaphragm and the flange of H-beam are similar, it was ascertained that the bending stress occurred at the beam can be transferred to the column through the diaphragm.

  • One of the most influential elements is the moment resisting beam-to-column connection vis-a-vis the behavior and cost of multistory steel building frames. Majority of these connections are column flange connections attached to beam frames. This is called strong-axis connection. Another type of moment resisting connection commonly found in building frames is the web axis connection. In this type of connection, the beams are attached to the plane of the column web perpendicularly. It is called the weak-axis beam. and it tends to bend the column at its weak axis. In this study, some of the fundamental behaviors of beam-to-column connections were examined by changing the connection details as weil as comparing them with previous connection details. This study sought to develop the details in the beam-to-column connection in the weak axis for middle- and low-rise steel construction systems.

  • The cross-sectional shape factor is used worldwide to evaluate the scientific performance of fire-resistant structures. In South Korea, however, a system for applying a cross-sectional shape factor has not been arranged and circular or rectangular steel pipes are commonly used for large-scale steel frame buildings. On the other hand, coating material-spray steel beams and pillars that have received the certification of a fire-resistant structure from recognized organizations are mostly limited to a H-beam. A H-beam is granted a wide range of certifications without size limitations from a non-loading performance test with test standards based on the relevant provisions. Other types of steel pipe are to be certified for fireresistance according to shape. In this study, a cross-sectional shape factor was used to propose standard testing specifications for the application of coating material-sprayed circular and rectangular steel pipes, eventually to set the scope of certification for reasonable fire-resistant structures.

  • Four precast concrete beam-column connectors for the apartment buildings were considered to develop a modified model which was adapt to domestic construction conditions from the DDC(Dywidag Ductile Connectors) of Germany. Special H-shape steel were used to decrease the width of column and beams for the construction of external frames of apartments. It was found that the DDC had high joint strength and ductility, however failed in x-shape crackings in the columns. The modified one showed better behaviors in tests because they did not show critical column crackings at failure. The test result of modified one with grouting were compared to that of the one without grouting within the duct. The one with grouting showed higher strength and ductility in failure than that without grouting.
