The unique properties of 2D materials significantly rely on the atomic structure and defects. Thus study at atomic scale is crucial for in-depth understanding of 2D materials and provides insights into its future applications. Using aberration-corrected transmission electron microscopes, atomic resolution imaging of individual atoms has been achieved even at a low kV. Ongoing optimization of aberration correction improves the spatial resolution better than angstrom and moreover boosts the contrast of light atoms. I present the recent progress of the study on the atomic structure and defects of monolayer and multilayer graphene, hBN and MoS2. Furthermore, the defect formation mechanisms of graphene, hexagonal boron nitride and MoS2 are discussed.
The stability constants for the diaza-18-crown-6 ethers 2-6 and alkali metal cations ($Na^+,\;K^+,\;Rb^+\;and\;Cs^+$) were determined using potentiometry in 95% methanol. For each metal ion the stability constants of the partiallyfluorinated ligands 3-6 were larger than that of the non-fluorinated ligand 2, which might reflect an interaction between fluorine atoms and alkali metal cations. The stability constant of the ligand 4 was larger than that of the ligand 5 for each metal cation tested. This finding was also supported by the results of cation-induced chemical shifts in $^1H-,\;^{19}F$-NMR and extraction experiment. The potentiometry and NMR results as well as the X-ray crystal structures revealed that the position and number of fluorine atoms in the benzyl side arms was crucial for the enhanced interaction between a ligand and an alkali metal.
Caspases, a family of cysteinyl aspartate-specific proteases plays a central role in the regulation and the execution of apoptotic cell death. Caspase-3 has been proven to be an effective target for reducing the amount of cellular and tissue damage because the activation of caspases-3 stimulates a signalling pathway that ultimately leads to the death of the cell. In this study, Hologram based Quantitative Structure Activity Relationship (HQSAR) models was generated on a series of Caspase-3 inhibitors named 3, 4-dihydropyrimidoindolones derivatives. The best HQSAR model was obtained using atoms, bonds, and hydrogen atoms (A/B/H) as fragment distinction parameter using hologram length 61 and 3 components with fragment size of minimum 5 and maximum 8. Significant cross-validated correlation coefficient ($q^2=0.684$) and non cross-validated correlation coefficients ($r^2=0.754$) were obtained. The model was then used to evaluate the eight external test compounds and its $r^2_{pred}$ was found to be 0.559. Contribution map show that presence of pyrrolidine sulfonamide ring and its bulkier substituent's makes big contributions for improving the biological activities of the compounds.
A colorless and transparent zirconium oxide ($Zr_{0.73}Y_{0.27}O_{1.87}$) crystal has been synthesized by the Bridgman-Stockbager method. The gem-quality material is produced by adding 20${\sim}$25 wt.% $Y_2O_3$ (stabilizer) and 0.04 wt.% $Nd_2O_3$ (decolorising agent) to the $ZrO_2$ powder. It shows a vitreous luster with a slight oily appearance. Under a polarizing microscope, it shows isotropic nature with no appreciable anisotropism. Mohs hardness value and specific gravity is measured to be 8${\sim}$$8{\frac{1}{2}}$ and 5.85, respectively. Under ultraviolet light it shows a faint white glow. The crystal structure of yttria-stabilized zirconia with 0.27 at.% Y has been re-investigated, using single crystal X-ray diffraction, and confirmed to be a cubic symmetry, space group $Fm{\overline{3}}m$ ($O^5_h$) with a=5.1552(5) ${{\AA}}$, V=136.99(5) ${{\AA}}^3$, Z=4. The stabilizer atoms randomly occupy the zirconium sites and there are displacements of oxygen atoms with amplitudes of ${\Delta}/a{\sim}$0.033 and 0.11 along <110> and <111> from the ideal positions of the fluorite structure, respectively.
Recently, molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) nanostructures have been investigated for applications of lithium-ion batteries, solar cell, and gas sensors. In this regard, we have studied atomic and electronic properties of MoS2 nanostructures with adsorbed atoms and molecules using density functional theory calculations. Our calculations reveal that the several atoms such as H, C, N, and F are chemically bound to several sites on the two-dimensional (2D) MoS2 surface. On the other hand, various contamination molecules such as CO, CO2, NO, NO2, and NH3 do not bind to the surface. Next, adsorption of various molecules on the one-dimensional (1D) armchair MoS2 nanoribbon is investigated. Contrary to the case of 2D MoS2 monolayer surface, some molecules (CO and NO) are bound well to the edge of the MoS2 nanoribbon. We find that the molecular states due to adsorption are located near the Fermi level, which makes the band gap narrower. Therefore, we suggest that monolayer MoS2 nanoribbons be used as the gas sensors or detectors.
The interaction of hydrogen with ZnO single crystal surfaces, ZnO(0001) and ZnO(000-1), has been investigated using a temperature programmed desorption (TPD) technique. Both surfaces do not interact with molecular hydrogen. When the ZnO(0001) is exposed to atomic hydrogen at 370 K, hydrogen is adsorbed in the surface and desorption takes place at around 460 K and 700 K. In ZnO(000-1), the desorption peaks are observed at around 440 K and 540 K. In both surfaces, as the atomic hydrogen exposure is further increased, the intensity of the low-temperature peak reaches maximum but the intensity of the high-temperature peak keeps increasing. In ZnO(000-1), the existence of hydrogen bonding to the surface O atoms and the bulk hydrogen has been confirmed by using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). When the Zn(0001) surface is exposed to atomic hydrogen at around 200 K, a new $H_2$ desorption peak has been observed at around 250 K. The intensity of the desorption feature at 250 K is much greater than that of the desorption feature at 460 K. This low-temperature desorption feature indicates hydrogen is bonded to surface Zn atoms. We will report the effect of the ZnO structure on the adsorption and bulk diffusion of hydrogen.
The polysaccharide, (1\longrightarrow5)-$\alpha$-D-ribofuranan, was synthesized by a cationic ring-opening polymerization of 1,4-anhydro-2,3-di-O-benzyl-$\alpha$-D-ribopyranose with the aid of boron trifluoride etherate and subsequent debenzylation. This polysaccharide catalyzed the hydrolysis of ethyl p-nitrophenyl phosphate, uridylyl(3'\longrightarrow5')uridine ammonium salt, and 4-tert-butylcatechol cyclic phosphate N-methyl pyridinium. The polymer also catalyzed the cleavage of nucleic acids (DNA and RNA). The hydrolysis of ethyl p-nitrophenyl phosphate in the presence of the polymer was accelerated by 1.5 ${\times}$ 10$^3$ times relative to the uncatalyzed reaction. The catalytic activity was attributable to the vic-cis-diols of the riboses being located inside the active center that is formed by polymer chain folding; these diols form hydrogen bonds with two phosphoryl oxygen atoms of the phosphates so as to activate the phosphorus atoms to be attacked by nucleophile ($H_2O$).

Combined LIBS-Raman spectroscopy has been widely studied, due to its complementary capabilities as an elemental analyzer that can acquire signals of atoms, ions, and molecules. In this study, the classification of polymorphs was performed by laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) to overcome the limitation in molecular analysis; the results were verified by Raman spectroscopy. LIBS signals of the $CaCO_3$ polymorphs calcite and aragonite, and $CaSO_4{\cdot}2H_2O$ (gypsum) and $CaSO_4$ (anhydrite), were acquired using a Nd:YAG laser (532 nm, 6 ns). While the molecular study was performed using Raman spectroscopy, LIBS could also provide sufficient key data for classifying samples containing different molecular densities and structures, using the peculiar signal ratio of $5s{\rightarrow}4p$ for the orbital transition of two polymorphs that contain Ca. The basic principle was analyzed by electronic motion in plasma and electronic transition in atoms or ions. The key factors for the classification of polymorphs were the different electron quantities in the unit-cell volume of each sample, and the selection rule in electric-dipole transitions. The present work has extended the capabilities of LIBS in molecular analysis, as well as in atomic and ionic analysis.
The sharp-line absorption and emission spectra of $(H_{13}O_6)${$trans-[Cr(Me_2tn)_2Br_2]$}$_2Br_2(ClO_4)\;(Me_2$tn = 2,2-dimethyl-1,3-diaminopropane) have been measured between 13000 $cm^{-1}$ and 16000 $cm^{-1}$ at 5 K. The 298 K infrared and visible absorption spectra have also been measured. The nine electronic bands due to spin-allowed and spin-forbidden transitions were assigned. Using observed transitions, a ligand field analysis has been performed to probe the ligand field properties of coordinated atoms in the title chromium(III) complex ion. The zero-phonon line in the sharp-line absorption spectrum splits into two components by 286 $cm^{-1}$, and the large $^2E_g$ splitting can be reproduced by the modern ligand field theory. It is confirmed that nitrogen atoms of the Me2tn ligand have a strong $\sigma$-donor character, but the bromide has weak $\sigma$- and $\pi$-donor properties toward chromium(III) ion.
Skutterudite $CoSb_3$ doped with nickel was prepared by encapsulated induction melting, and its doping effects on thermoelectric properties were investigated. Single phase ${\delta}-CoSb_3$ was successfully obtained by encapsulated induction melting and subsequent heat treatment at 773 K for 24 h. Nickel atoms acted as electron donors by substituting cobalt atoms. Thermoelectric properties were remarkably improved by appropriate heat treatment and doping, and they were closely related to phase transitions and dopant activation. The maximum ZT(dimensionless figure of merit) was achieved as 0.2 at 600 K for the $Co_{0.93}Ni_{0.07}Sb_3$ specimen.
