  • Brown leaf spot caused by Phyllosticta cruenta from 2007 to 2009 occurred severely in an herbs exhibition on Doonggulle (Polygonatum odoratum) at Gangju pond in Jeongchon-myon, Jinju city, Gyeongnam province, Korea. The typical symptoms of this disease were appeared on the brown leaf spot of leaves. Lesions on the leaves were appeared elliptical or irregular with 2~8 mm in size. Infected leaves were wilted, blighted and eventually died. Pycnidiospores and pycnidia of the fungus were abundantly formed on PDA. The optimum temperature for mycelial growth was $20{\sim}{25^{\circ}C}$. Pycnidiospores were not readily formed on PDA, colorless in color, globose~subglobose in shape, $10{\sim}18{\times}5{\sim}12{\mu}m$ in size and appendage hanged $4{\sim}15{\mu}m$ in size. Pycnidia were globose~subglobose in shape, dark brown in color and $60{\sim}162{\times}70{\sim}174{\mu}m$ in size. On the basis of mycological characteristics and pathogenicity test on host plants, the fungus was identified as Phyllosticta cruenta (Kunze: Fries) Kickx. This is the first report on the brown leaf spot of Doonggulle caused by P. cruenta in Korea.

  • Purpose : Group A streptococci(GAS) was isolated from the patients with acute pharyngitis. Epidemiological studies using T typing and emm genotyping was performed for GAS and compared with the results of the carriers. Methods : Throat cultures were taken from 246 children(123 boys, 123 girls) from November, 2001 to May, 2002 who visited a pediatrician's office located in Jinju, Gyeongnam province. T types were identified with slide agglutination and emm genotypes were identified with DNA sequencing after amplification of emm genes. Results : One hundred thirty(52.8%) out of 246 children yielded beta-hemolytic streptococci, of which 96.1% were group A. Children from 4 to 7 years old comprised 70.4% of the GAS positive group. T12 were the most common(35.2%) and T non-typeable strains were the next(30.4%). emm12 was most frequent(28.5%), and emm75(18.7%), emm22(13.0%), emm2(12.2%), and emm8(8.1%) were relatively common. Conclusion : Since GAS is so highly prevalent in acute pharyngitis, indeed being half of the population, good clinical practice dictates the systematic employment of throat culture for acute pharyngitis before prescribing antibiotics in a pediatric setting. The distribution of the T antigens and emm genes showed similar pattern between the acute pharyngitis and the carriers.

  • The Purpose of this study was to investigate the eating habits, nutrition and dietary fiber intakes of middle school students from urban areas, Jinju city and rural areas, Hadong and Namhae Gun in Gyeongnam province. Data were collected by using a survey questionnaire. The result of this study are as follows: In the respects of eating habits, the eating habits of girl students ware worse than those of boy students Regardless of region and subjects, the intakes of energy, calcium, iron, riboflavin, dietary fiber were poor. In all the regions the intakes of dietary fiber was far less than $20\~25g$ of daily intakes level. Mental education should also be emphasized to form teenagers' self-identity and the sense of value. Also, the nutritionists of each school should try to focus on the composition of group meals containing fish, vegetables, Kimchi and boiled rice and cereals, not satisfying with the group meals centered on hygiene. Health and nutrition depends on the food people take, teenagers' health is the basis of their future health. The continuous study about teenagers' eating habits and dietary fiber needs to be emphasized.

  • A magnitude 5.4 earthquake struck the city of Pohang, North Gyeongsang Province, South Korea on November 15, 2017. Many sand volcanoes were observed on paddy fields, parks and roads. This phenomenon was the first to be observed as a sign of soil liquefaction in South Korea. In this study, two different kinds of ejected Pohang sands were collected from a liquefied paddy field. Those sands were reconstituted into loose and dense conditions and then a series of cyclic simple shear tests were conducted under confining stresses of 100 and 200 kPa. A real earthquake motion was also repetitively applied to the specimen. As a result of constant shear stress tests, the cyclic resistance ratio (CRR) of loose sand was 0.12-0.14, while the CRR value of dense sand was 0.17-0.21. It was shown that the relative density was more influencing factor on liquefaction resistance than the sand types and initial confining stress. When a real Pohang earthquake motion was repetitively applied to the specimen, a loose sand was liquefied at the second earthquake motion but the dense sand at the third earthquake motion.

  • The objectives of the present study were to initiate cloning of Korean native goat by somatic cell nuclear transfer (NT) and to examine whether unovulated (follicular) oocytes can support the same developmental ability of NT embryos as ovulated (oviductal) oocytes after hCG injection in stimulated cycles of the goat. The in vivo-matured and immature oocytes were collected from the oviducts and follicles of superovulated does, respectively, and the immature oocytes were maturated in vitro. Ear skin fibroblasts derived from a 3-yr-old female Korean native goat were used as the donors of nuclei or karyoplasts. Following fusion, activation and in vitro culture to a 2- to 4-cell stage, 49 in vitro-derived and 105 in vivo-derived embryos were transferred to 6 and 17 recipient does, respectively. One doe and three does of the respective groups were identified as pregnant by ultrasonography on day 30 after embryo transfer. However, only one doe, which had received in vivo-derived embryos, delivered a normal female kid of 1.9 kg on d 149. The cloned kid gained more weight than her age-matched females as much as 87% during the first 4 mo after birth (17.7 vs. $9.4{\pm}0.8$ kg) and reached puberty at 6-mo age a few months earlier than normal female does. The telomere length of the kid, which was similar to that of the donor fibroblast at 2-mo age, decreased 8% between 2- and 7-mo ages. Moreover, at 7-mo age, she had 21% shorter telomere than her age-matched goats. To our knowledge, this is the first case in which a cloned animal born with a normal weight exhibited accelerated growth and development. The unusually rapid growth and development of the cloned goat may have resulted from SCNT-associated epigenetic reprogramming involving telomere shortening.

  • This study was performed to search for correlation between activity limitation level and participation restriction of children with cerebral palsy by investigating the activity limitation level through the use of the GMFCS E&R and the MACS and by figuring out participation restriction level through questionnaire survey. This study was performed, from May 1, 2010 to August 31, 2010, on 152 children with cerebral palsy ranging from 4 to 12 years, who are receiving rehabilitation therapy in the hospitals and community clinics in Busan and Gyeongnam province. The levels of activity limitation were assessed by using GMFCS E&R and MACS, and a questionnaire survey was conducted for participation restriction of the participating children. Spearman rank correlation was used for correlation analysis with the statistical software, SPSS 12.0. Majority of the children scored level 5 in both GMFCS E&R and MACS which is high frequency of activity limitation levels. Children in these levels also showed severe or complete participation restriction for mobility, education, and social relations. The analysis showed a significantly positive correlation between activity limitation level and participation restriction. Therefore this study may be useful in assessing the functional movement component of participation in children with cerebral palsy and developing the intervention plan for participation.

  • Press ham were manufactured to investigate the effects of ginseng powder on quality characteristics of press ham. Each treatment added pork loin basis with Ginseng powder(0, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0%) were stored until 28 days at 4℃. The changes in shear force value, thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), fatty acid composition and sensory evaluation of each treatment were measured until 28 days at 4℃. Shear force value was not significantly different between the control and ginseng treatment groups. The value for all treatments were decreased significantly by the passage of storage time (P<0.05). Remarkable differences were found in sensory properties(color, flavor and acceptability) among control and ginseng treatment groups. This was not clearly changed by the passage of storage time. Ginseng treatment groups showed significantly (p<0.05) lower TBARS value than the control. TBARS value was increased significantly during storage in all treatments. Fatty acid composition did not significantly differ between the control and ginseng treatment groups. Summing up the a forementioned results, press ham manufacturing with ginseng powder was not affected in shear force value, sensory evaluation, TBARS and fatty acid composition. Also, it may be assumed that the high quality press ham can be manufactured with the extend of storage period and saponin accumulation.

  • Mandarin fish (SSOGARI: Korean name) has emerged as new aquaculture and aquarium fish among Korean native fish species. Unfortunately, this fish could not exempt from infectious agent invasion. As an epidemiological survey, high mortality of mandarin fish (Siniperca scherzeri) observed from a fish farm in Gyeongnam province of South Korea. The major macroscopic sign of the diseased fish was severe multifocal dermal ulceration. Histological observation revealed inflammation, necrosis and colonization of bacteria in various tissues. Seven bacterial isolates from the diseased fish were identified as Aeromonas salmonicida subsp. salmonicida (typical A. salmonicida) using API 20E and 20NE system. However, the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay using two different primers (AP and MIY) revealed that the bacterial strains were not typical A. salmonicida, but atypical A. salmonicida. This study demonstrates that PCR assay is a reliable method for the confirmation of atypical A. salmonicida in mandarin fish as compared to biochemical tests. Furthermore, this is the first account of extensive dermatitis in mandarin fish due to atypical A. salmonicida infection, which has high potential in aquaculture and aquarium fish among native fish species.
