  • Downy mildew caused by Pseudoperonospora cubensis (Berkeley & Curtis) occurred on the cotyledon of gourd (Lagenaria leucantha cv. Sambokkkul) and scion of watermelon (cv. FR couple) in commercial nursery around Jinju city, Gyeongnam province in Korea in 2005 and 2006. The disease symptoms usually started with water-soaking lesions on cotyledon and then the infected leaves became withered and eventually died. The sporangia of the pathogen were one-celled, ovoid to ellipsoid in shape, pale grayish in color, and $20{\sim}32{\times}14{\sim}18{\mu}m$ in size. Sporangiophores were errect, branched, and $140{\sim}380{\times}4{\sim}8{\mu}m$ in size. Pathogenicity of the causal organism was proved according to artificial inoculations. Although the virulence of the causal fungus on the host plants was not strong, it produced typical symptoms. The causal organism was identified as Pseudoperonospora cubensis (Berkeley & Curtis) based on the mycological characteristics of the fungus and pathogenicity. This is the first report on downy mildew of watermelon caused by P. cubensis in Korea.

  • Dipterans are excellent insects to serve as forensic indicators to determine the postmortem interval of a human corpse. Therefore, we undertook a study to identify the major dipterans that are attracted to and develop in vertebrate carcasses. To determine what dipterans occur in Korea, chicken carcasses were placed in various habitats including the forest, open field, stream bank, greenhouse, rooftop, rice paddy, Chinese cabbage field, vacant hut, and pond at different times of the year. The dipterans were collected at various time intervals after placement in each habitat until the end of decomposition and identified. Our results showed that 49 identified and unidentified dipteran species from 36 genera in 19 families were collected from the carcasses. Habitat placement influenced the number of species isolated from the carcasses. For example, 39 species were collected from the forest habitat, 28 species from the open field, stream bank, or greenhouse each, 16 species from a vacant home, and 12 species from the pond. The dipteran species that were collected from all habitats were Phaenicia sericata, Lucilia illustris, and Lucilia sp. in the family Calliphoridae and Boettcherisca peregrine in the family Sarcophagidae. Other dipteran species that were isolated depended on carcass placement that is, fewer dipteran species were observed from carcasses in the backpack and much more species were recorded from unburied carcasses than buried carcasses. P. sericata, L. illustris, Lucilia sp., B peregrine and an unidentified sarcophagid species were observed year round, but some dipterans showed seasonal differences.

  • This study developed an estimation model for litterfall input using the stand parameters (basal area, stand density, mean DBH, and carbon stocks of the aboveground tree biomass) collected from the Korean red pine (Pinus densiflora S. et Z.) stands of seven regions in Gyeongsangnam-do. The mean annual litterfall was 2,779 kg ha-1 year-1 for needles, 883 kg ha-1 year-1 for miscellaneous, 611 kg ha-1 year-1 for broadleaved, 513 kg ha-1 year-1 for branches, and 340 kg ha-1 year-1 for bark litter. The mean annual total litterfall was 5,051 kg ha-1 year-1. Litterfall components were significantly correlated with stand parameters, except for broadleaved litter. A stronger correlation was observed between the carbon stock of the aboveground tree biomass and all the litterfall components compared with the other stand variables. The allometric equations for all the litterfall components were significant (P < 0.05), with the stand parameters accounting for 5%-43% and 8%-42% of the variation in the needle litter and total litterfall, respectively. The results indicated that the annual litterfall inputs of the Korean red pine stands on a regional scale can be effectively estimated by allometric equations using the basal area and carbon stocks of the aboveground tree biomass.

  • The quantity of heavy metals in agricultural surface and subsurface soils around coal-fired power plants located in Samcheonpo and Hadong, Gyeongnam Province, were determined. The analytical results for 48 and 61 soils in Samcheonpo and Hadong, respectively, showed that the concentrations of Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb, and Zn were below the warning criteria regulated by Korean Soil Conservation Act; however, Cd in 38 and 13 soils in Samcheonpo and Hadong, respectively, exceeded the criterion. As a result of calculation of the geoaccumulation index and the enrichment factor, the soils were extremely contaminated with Cd and such high loading of Cd to the soils was due to anthropogenic source(s). Sequential extraction of the soils, however, showed that heavy metals including Cd existed as hardly extractable phases, which represented a low bioavailability of the heavy metals. Our results indicated that Cd contamination around the coal-fired power plants was due to artificial source(s) and may unlikely deteriorate nearby ecosystems.

  • Purpose: The purpose of the study is to learn the importance of self-directed learning about career-preparation behavior of department of dental technology students. Methods: Using the questionnaire, the department of dental technology in Gyeongnam Province conducted a survey of students of department of dental technology at A and B college for one month from May 15, 2019 through June 15, 2019, and finally 204 students were surveyed for Self-esteem, Self-determination, Self-efficacy, Internal control, College life adaptation, Self-directed learning, and Career-preparation behavior. Results: Self-esteem among students has been shown to improve self-directed learning by increasing the stress of college life, and self-efficacy has only a direct effect on self-directed learning. In addition, self-determination and internal control of department of dental technology students were found to be variables that have a common positive effect on college life adaptation and self-directed learning. In addition, college life adaptation gives direct positive effect to self-directed learning, but indirect effect through self-directed learning was found to be stronger than direct effect on career-preparation behavior, and the career-preparation behavior of students was further strengthened through self-directed learning. Conclusion: The changes in college restructuring and various policies also suggest that students should actively seek ways to instill certainty about their major's vision and career path within the college rather than deciding their future through extreme measures such as academic secession at a time when anxiety and uncertainty about their career is strong.

  • There are approximately 1.06 million vacant homes in Korea, accounting for 6% of all housing, and approximately 98 thousand vacant homes are in Gyeongsangnam-do, taking up 8.7% of the housing in the province. In particular, the number of abandoned house in Gyeongsangnam-do is rapidly increasing from 6.7% in 2010 to 8.7% in 2015. This study examined the current state of abandoned house in Gyeongsangnam-do according to the characteristics of cities and rural areas, causes for vacancies, and demand for use of such abandoned house. The study areas were selected based on case studies in Korea and overseas, and a survey was conducted among residents in the selected areas. The survey was on awareness of abandoned house in the neighborhood, causes for vacancies, awareness of owners, the influence of the abandoned house, plans to deal with abandoned house, and plans to utilize abandoned house. The results showed that most residents were aware of abandoned house, especially the ones in rural areas, who had detailed perceptions about abandoned house nearby such as when the homes became empty and whether there are owners of the homes. As for the influence of abandoned house on the surrounding environment, both rural areas and cities responded that abandoned house mostly spoil the beauty of the neighborhood, followed by psychological anxiety such as fear of crimes. Regarding plans to utilize abandoned house nearby, at least half of the residents wanted to use them as rental housing after repairing them. A survey on the actual condition must be conducted at the provincial level in order to establish an integrated system to manage abandoned house in Gyeongsangnam-do. Moreover, it is necessary to come up with application measures according to categories and standards to classify the state of abandoned house in order to use them as resources for community regeneration.
