  • The northern extension of the Dongrae Fault is inferred to transect the Ulsan Fault in the Gueo-ri area, Oedong-eup, ~15 km SE of Gyeongju City, Gyeongbuk province, S Korea. We conducted geological and geophysical (magnetic, electrical resistivity, and frequency domain electromagnetic) surveys to identify the extent and orientation of the Dongrae Fault in this region. Through joint interpretation of the geological and geophysical data sets, we confirm the presence of the Dongrae Fault and determine its strike ($N14^{\circ}E$). The Dongrae Fault is thought to cross the Ulsan Fault near Ipsil Bridge in the Gwangeo-ri area. Geophysical surveying revealed a fault damage zone that widens to the south, with a typical width of >200 m. Geological field surveys did not delineate the geometry of the Dongrae Fault because alluvial deposits overlie the fault in this area.

  • This study intends to examine the characteristics of the construction method of the urban water system in the historical cities of Korea, focusing on Gyeongju, Gyeongju, Goryeo, Hanyang, and Suwon Hwaseong, which were created as new towns in the late Joseon Dynasty. It examines the meaning of waterways in connection with the urban skeletal structure, focusing on the location of cities, roads, and arrangement of urban facilities, and analyzes the compositional form of the water system. We tried to derive the relationship with the structure. In particular, it can be seen that water and natural water systems act as key factors in determining the location of a city, and have a close relationship with the urban structure, urban development process, and urban structure. In addition to the symbolic meaning of water in harmony with the geographical concept, realistic demands in terms of water level and water retention are an important background. In order to respond to various demands related to water space, various planning and technical elements for managing water space were introduced in the process of city formation and development. The planning elements of the urban water system in the process of urban formation and development are summarized as follows through the analysis of the research site. First, in the process of building the urban water system in Gyeongju, Goryeo, Goryeo, Hanyang, and Hwaseong, Suwon, which were selected as the research destinations, the water system in consideration of drainage and disaster is common, but the water system construction method and usability are common. shows the difference. Second, water and natural water systems act as symbolic elements to secure the legitimacy of the city location, and as a key factor in determining the location of the city in harmony with the geographical concept and determining the left direction of the city. Third, the natural water system prior to the formation of a city works as a basis for determining the compositional form of the urban water system constructed in the process of urban formation and development in harmony with the topographical conditions. Fourth, the urban water system built on the basis of natural water systems is constructed by linking natural waterways and planned artificial waterways. Fifth, the urban water system is being built in a planned manner in consideration of the utility in connection with the urban structure, such as securing of urban land, arrangement of urban facilities and areas, composition of functional areas, and land division, in addition to the perspective of drainage system and flood control in consideration of disasters.

  • Gyeongju, which was the central city of the ancient civilization at Silla Kingdom, has various kinds of stone cultural properties. It is significantly important to preserve historical sources of Korea. However, recent air quality data measured in Gyeongju did not show good air quality level. In order to investigate variation of the concentration of the air pollutants with meteorological condition, an air quality monitoring and an aerosol sampling were conducted during the intensive monitoring period in Gyeongju. Impacts of the meteorological factors on the air pollutants were also analyzed based on the air mass pathway categories using HYSPLIT model and the local wind patterns using MM5 model. The prevailing air mass pathways were classified into four categories as following; category I affected by easterly marine aerosols, category II affected by northwesterly continental aerosols, category III affected by southwesterly continental aerosols, and category IV affected by northerly continental aerosols. The concentrations of the air quality standards were relatively lower during the fall intensive monitoring period. At that time, the easterly marine air mass pattern was dominated. The seasonal average mass concentration of $PM_{10,Opt}$, which optically measured at the monitoring site, was the highest value of $77.6{\pm}28.3\;{\mu}g\;m^{-3}$ during the spring intensive monitoring period but the lowest value of $20.1{\pm}5.3\;{\mu}g\;m^{-3}$ during the fall intensive monitoring period. The concentrations of $SO_2$ and CO were relatively higher when the air mass came from the northwestern continent or the northern continent. The concentrations of ${SO_4}^{2-}$ and ${NO_3}^-$ increased under the northwesterly continental condition. It was estimated that the acidic aerosols were dominated in the atmosphere of Gyeongju when the air mass came from the continental regions.

  • The "Historic city Preservative law" was legislated for the preservation of cultural properties and enacting regulations of managing the environment around them in 2004. This law was revised to "Historic city Preservative and Development law" in 2012, and specified the criteria for permissible behaviors in the preservative district. Therefore, this paper focused on the ancient capital Gyeongju and developed a comprehensive system for evaluating the value of the ancient historic district based on Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP). Through the evaluation of the ancient historic districts, which are the pilot project districts in the "Gyeongju Ancient Capital Preservation Plan", some preferential projects were objectively proposed. As a result, according to the evaluation among 10 ancient historic districts in Gyeongju, Daereungwon got a score of 78.34, which is the highest among 7 special preservation districts. On the other side, the Gyo-dong area got a score of 76.14, the highest among 3 historic and cultural environmental districts. Finally, for the preservation and development of Gyeongju, some efficient preservation and development plans were objectively proposed for the pilot project districts in the "Gyeongju Ancient Capital Preservation Plan".

  • Development of forest garden for city dwellers utilizing green space within urban area is nowadays highly regarded as a means to invigorate city and to raise living standard for city dwellers. Thus, development of forest garden has become pressing and important agenda for city governments. Promoting forest garden to solve many environmental and social issues city governments face today requires evaluation criteria to determine whether target green space is suitable to serve as forest garden. In this respect, we believe that evaluation of values of forest garden from previous studies can serve as foundation for developing evaluation index for forest garden. Thus, we aimed to develop evaluation criteria for values of forest garden. First, various evaluation criteria collected from previous studies were assessed by expert groups. Then, the result was studied through AHP technique and we developed evaluation criteria for forest garden based on such result. Especially, evaluation criteria were divided into main and sub-levels for more detailed and precise evaluation system.

  • The existence of coastal terraces, HH(High higher) surfaces found at Gampo of southeast coast and at Jeongdongjin of the central east coast were confirmed at Jigyeong-Ri, the areal border between Gyeongju- and Ulsan city on the southeast coast of Korea Peninsula. Especially this study reports HH JK-surface located on the 155m a.s.l., which is the highest altitude among the ancient shorelines of the coastal terraces in Korea. The HH surfaces on the study area are classified into HH JK at 155m, HH-I at 140m and HH-II at 115m, and each formation stage is related to MIS 17(720∼690ka BP), MIS 15(630∼560ka BP) and MIS 13(510∼480ka BP) respectively. The HH-surfaces remain to be larger than those of H- and L-surfaces. The reason is caused by the unique factors of the coastal geology and morphology on the study area during the formation stage. And also the areal difference by the magnitude of upheaval doesn't exist from north to south because the altitude system of ancient shoreline on each coastal terrace is same along the east coast. The upheaval rate of the eastern coastal areas was measured in the relation to the ancient shoreline and formation stage among the coastal terraces such as HH JK-, HH-I, HH-II, H-III and H-IY surface, and was almost same as 0.23mm/y.

  • In this study, we focused on the geographical and the meterological conditions, the atmospheric examination, the soil contents and compositions in order to establish cultural properties conservation plan in Gyeongju and its surroundings. Also, the transport route with environmental contaminants in Ulsan and Pohang was examined. The results could be summarized as follows ; Air pollutant and environmental contaminant was transported by two types of winds. One is induced by local winds, the other is induced by synoptic winds. Air contaminant transported from coastal regions to inland regions were associated with wind velocity. Gyeongju had good atmospheric conditions, i.e. $SO_2\;0.009{\sim}0.011ppm,\;CO\;0.6{\sim}0.8ppm,\;NO_2\;0.015{\sim}0.020ppm,\;O_3\;0.017{\sim}0.032ppm,\;PM_{10}\;46{\sim}62{\mu}g/m^3\;and\;Pb\;0.034{\sim}0.060{\mu}g/m^3$, which was below environmental air qualify standards and was little lower than those of Pohang and Ulsan. However, Ulsan and Pohang city are located on south-east coast and have many industrial facilities. Hence, air pollution problems become serious issues in Ulsan, Pohang, Busan, Daegu and other cities due to the emission of air pollutants from the various industrial facilities, incinerator and power plants, etc. The soil of Gyeongju had heavy metals conditions, i.e. $Cd\;0.01{\sim}0.08mg/kg,\;Cu\;N.D{\sim}2.39mg/kg,\;As\;N.D{\sim}0.07mg/kg,\;Hg\;N.D{\sim}0.15mg/kg,\;Pb\;0.49{\sim}1.39mg/kg,\;Cr^{+6}\;0.02{\sim}0.42mg/kg,\;Fe\;0.74{\sim}1.55mg/kg,\;Mn\;0.11{\sim}0.49mg/kg\;and\;Zn\;1.11{\sim}3.56mg/kg$. However, pH value of soil had range of $4.12{\sim}7.45$. The results showed that high pH concentration of soil could occur due to air pollution diffusion and environmental contaminant transport at Ulsan and Pohang city.

  • The purpose of this study is to assess the seismic vulnerability of buildings in Gyeongju city starting with the earthquake that occurred in the city on September 12, 2016, and produce a seismic vulnerability map. 11 influence factors related to geotechnical, physical, and structural indicators were selected to assess the seismic vulnerability, and these were applied as independent variables. For a dependent variable, location data of the buildings that were actually damaged in the 9.12 Gyeongju Earthquake was used. The assessment model was constructed based on random forest (RF) as a mechanic study method and support vector machine (SVM), and the training and test dataset were randomly selected with a ratio of 70:30. For accuracy verification, the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was used to select an optimum model, and the accuracy of each model appeared to be 1.000 for RF and 0.998 for SVM, respectively. In addition, the prediction accuracy was shown as 0.947 and 0.926 for RF and SVM, respectively. The prediction values of the entire buildings in Gyeongju were derived on the basis of the RF model, and these were graded and used to produce the seismic vulnerability map. As a result of reviewing the distribution of building classes as an administrative unit, Hwangnam, Wolseong, Seondo, and Naenam turned out to be highly vulnerable regions, and Yangbuk, Gangdong, Yangnam, and Gampo turned out to be relatively safer regions.

  • In this study, the plane type of main building relics of unified Silla period house site which excavated in Gyeongju city after 1990s was classified and the architectural characteristic of them was investigated. The chronology of building relics in Silla capital city site was mostly known as 8-9th century, and by standard of column arrangement, the plane types of them could be classified as grid type, front veranda-grid type, outer column type. The outstanding characteristic of plane is wide span and open front veranda. In most relics the span were over 4 meters, and inner foundations for small post and strip foundation were found between columns. The front veranda added type buildings were composited of enclosed main room and open front veranda, and column arrangement of them dose not fall into line in most case. Thus it thought that the structures of enclosed main room and open front veranda were independent. The interior space of enclosed main room were divided two rooms by partition wall in some case. In this case, one room is enclosed by wall, and the other room has open front side. This plane is considered for the pleasant life in cold winter and hot summer.
