Using barrier membrane, guided bone regeneration(GBR) and guided tissue regeneration(GTR) of periodontal tissue are now widely studied and good results were reported. In bone regeneration, not all cases gained good results and in some cases using GTR, bone were less regenerated than that of control. The purpose of this study is to search for the method to improve the success rate of GBR and GTR by examination of the cause of the failure. For these study, rats and beagle dogs were used. In rat study, 5mm diameter round hole was made on parietal bone of the rat and 10mm diameter of bioresorbable membrane was placed on the bone defects and sutured. In 1 ,2, 4 weeks later, the rats were sacrificed and Masson-Trichrome staining was done and inspected under light microscope for guided bone regeneration. In dog study, $3{\times}4mm^2$ Grade III furcation defect was made at the 3rd and 1th premolar on mandible of 6 beagle dogs. The defects were covered by bioresorbable membrane extending 2-3mm from the defect margin. The membrane was sutured and buccal flap was covered the defect perfectly. In 2, 4. 8 weeks later. the animals were sacrificed and undecalcified specimens were made and stained by multiple staining method. In rats. there was much amount of new bone formation at 2 weeks. and in 4 weeks specimen, bony defect was perfectly dosed and plenty amount of new bone marrow was developed. In some cases, there were failures of guided bone regeneration. In beagle dogs, guided tissue regeneration was incomplete when the defect was collapsed by the membrane itself and when the rate of resorption was so rapid than expected. The cause of the failure in GBR and GTR procedure is that 1) the membrane was not tightly seal the bony defects. If the sealing was not perfect, fibrous connective tissue infiltrate into the defect and inhibit the new bone formation and regeneration. 2) the membrane was too tightly attached to the tissue and then there was no space to be regenerated. In conclusion, the requirements of the membrane for periodontal tissue and bone regeneration are the biocompatibility, degree of sealingness, malleability. space making and manipulation. In this animal study. space making for new bone and periodontal ligament, and sealing the space might be the most important point for successful accomplishment of GBR and GTR.
Daylighting has a very effective role in reducing power consumption and improving indoor environments in office buildings. Previously, it was not under consideration as a major source of renewable energy due to poor reliability in the design. Optical fiber as a transmission medium in the daylighting system demands uniform distribution of light to solve cost, heat, and efficiency issues. Therefore, this study focuses on the uniform distribution of sunlight through the fiber bundle and to the interior of the building. To this end, two efficient approaches for the fiber-based daylighting system are presented. The first approach consists of a parabolic mirror, and the second approach contains a Fresnel lens. Sunlight is captured, guided, and distributed through the concentrator, optical fibers, and lenses, respectively. At the capturing stage, uniform illumination solves the heat problem, which has critical importance in making the system cost-effective by introducing plastic optical fibers. The efficiency of the system is increased by collimated light, which helps to insert maximum light into the optical fibers. Furthermore, we find that the hybrid system of combining sunlight and light emitting diode light gives better illumination levels than that of traditional lighting systems. Simulation and experimental results have shown that the efficiency of the system is better than previous fiber-based daylighting systems.
Selective accumulation of a photosensitizer and the subsequent response in only the light-irradiated target are advantages of photodynamic diagnosis and therapy. The limited depth of the therapeutic effect is a positive characteristic when treating surface malignancies, such as peritoneal carcinomatosis. For photodynamic diagnosis (PDD), adjunctive use of aminolevulinic acid- protoporphyrin IX-guided fluorescence imaging detects cancer nodules, which would have been missed during assessment using white light visualization only. Furthermore, since few side effects have been reported, this has the potential to become a vital component of diagnostic laparoscopy. A variety of photosensitizers have been examined for photodynamic therapy (PDT), and treatment protocols are heterogeneous in terms of photosensitizer type and dose, photosensitizer-light time interval, and light source wavelength, dose, and dose rate. Although several studies have suggested that PDT has favorable effects in peritoneal carcinomatosis, clinical trials in more homogenous patient groups are required to identify the true benefits. In addition, major complications, such as bowel perforation and capillary leak syndrome, need to be reduced. In the long term, PDD and PDT are likely to be successful therapeutic options for patients with peritoneal carcinomatosis, with several options to optimize the photosensitizer and light delivery parameters to improve safety and efficacy.
The purpose of this study was to investigate effect of enamel matrix derivative on guided bone regeneration with intramarrow penetration in rabbits. Eight adult male rabbits (mean BW 2Kg) were used in this study. Intramarrow penetration defects were surgically created with round carbide bur(HP long #6) on calvaria of rabbits. Defects were assigned to the control group grafted with mixture of the same quantity of demineralized freeze-dried bone allograft and deproteinized bovine bone mineral. Then, guided bone regeneration was carried out using resorbable membrane and suture. Enamel matrix derivative applied to defects was assigned to the test group. And treated as same manners as the control group. At 1, 2, 3 and 8 weeks after the surgery, animals were sacrificed, specimens were obtained and stained with Hematoxylin-Eosin for light microscopic evaluation. The results of this study were as follows : 1. At 1, 2 and 3 weeks, no differences were observed between the control group and the test group in the aspect of bone formation around bone graft. 2. Proliferation of blood capillary was faster in the test group than in the control group. 3. Bone regeneration in intramarrow penetration was faster in the test group than in the control group. 4. At 8 weeks, new osteoid tissue formation around bone graft was more prominent in the test group than in the control group. From the above results, enamel matrix derivative might be considered as the osteopromotion material and effective in the guided bone regeneration with intramarrow penetration.

This paper proposes a thickness measurement method of silicon-oxide and poly-silicon film deposited on 12" silicon wafer for spin etcher. Halogen lamp is used as a light source for generating a wide-band spectrum, which is guided and focused on the wafer surface through a optical fiber cable. Interference signal from the film is detected by optical sensor to determine the thickness of the film using spectrum analysis and several signal processing techniques including curve-fitting and adaptive filtering. Test wafers with three kinds of priori-known films, polysilicon(300 nm), silicon-oxide(500 nm) and silicon-oxide(600 nm), are measured while the wafer is spinning at 20 Hz and DI water flowing on the wafer surface. From experiment results the algorithm presented in the paper is proved to be effective with accuracy of maximum 0.8% error.rror.
Organic ($Alq_3$) film, which was coated on a donor plate, was transferred to an organic light emitting diode (OLED) substrate with help of heat generated by a dithering laser beam. The laser beam was diffracted in an acousto-optic modulator (AOM), then focused on the laser-to-heat converting layer of the donor plate; the focused spot followed trajectories guided by rotation of a Galvano-mirror. Three different functional waveforms, sine wave, square wave, and saw tooth wave were applied to the AOM as modulation signal to generate the dithering beam. The fluorescence microscope images of the donor plate showed that the patterns of removed $Alq_3$ film were affected considerably by the modulation waveforms and the phase difference between adjacent dithering beams. Further, the printed images of Alq3 film on the OLED substrate were different from the patterns of removed Alq3 film. Atomic force microscope images indicated that not only direct transfer but also deposition by sublimated vapor of Alq3 contributed to the pattern formation. Printed patterns affected considerably the electricity-to-light conversion characteristics of OLEDs. For uniform transfer, not only the phase relation of dithering beam lines but also adequate waveform were important.
The LGP with nanometer structures resulted in enhancement of optical efficiency. Its fundamental mechanism is to recycle the polarized light via one round-trip through QWP(Quarter-Wave Plate) but the maximum efficiency to reach with this method is limited up to 2. To get the larger efficiency than this limited one a LGP with nanometer-patterned grating is suggested. For its optimum design the computer simulation is performed and suggests a grating that the spatial frequency between adjacent patterns is 500nm, its height 250nm, duty cycle 50%, and its cross section is rectangular. On the basis of simulation results the LGP with nanometer-patterned grating is fabricated and its optical properties such as angular intensity distribution and CIE color coordinates are characterized. The angles of transmitted light are nearly the same as the results expected from the generalized Snell's law. Thus the Mathematica code, developed in this experiment, will be applied to designing the optimized LGP. The LGP with nanometer-patterened grating shows the enhancement of transmitted intensity distribution up to 4.9 times.
A Rhodamine-based fiber-optic sensor has been developed to detect mercury ions in aqueous environments. The fiber-optic sensor was composed of a mercury-sensing thin film, plastic optical fibers, and a spectrometer. The mercury-sensing thin film with the synthesized Rhodamine derivatives was fabricated with Sol-Gel process. A light emitted by a light source is guided by plastic optical fibers into the thin film in an aqueous solution and a reflected light is analyzed with the spectrometer. The experiment exhibits that an absorbance in the thin film is increased as mercury concentration is increased in the solution and the absorbance by mercury is higher than that by other heavy metals. The fiber-optic sensor exhibits high chromogenic phenomenon of mercury ions among various heavy metals and the correlation between absorbance and mercury concentration in the aqueous environments.
