  • Recently, turbines operating in hydro power plants are required to undergo renovation and modernization due to their age exceeding 30 years. In the process of renovation or modernization, a performance test of the scaled-down model is necessary to verify the performance of the real-size model. This model test method, with criteria that is similar to that of a real turbine, is the most economical and important method. Furthermore, the shapes of the runner and guide vane can be modified or replaced easily. However, during the process of modernization, the components with the spiral casing and draft tube are impossible to repair or replace because of the buried ground. Thus, in this study, numerical analysis is conducted to investigate the hydraulic performance based on the difference between the two-dimensional computer-aided design (CAD) shape and the real three-dimensional scan shape of the spiral casing and draft tube.

  • Experiments were performed to determine the thermal (or turbulent) diffusion coefficient (TDC) and to investigate the critical heat flux (CHF) performance in the 5${\times}$5 rod bundle with 5 unheated rods which are supported by Hybrid Mixing Vane. In this study, HFC-134a fluid was used as working fluid and the fluid temperature were measured in the important subchannels. To determine the TDC value, the measured fluid temperatures were compared with the predicted values obtained from the MATRA code. The best optimized value of ${\beta}$ was found to be 0.02 by considering prediction statistics, i.e., average and standard deviations of the differences between the experimental results and code calculations. Using the best optimized value of ${\beta}$ as 0.02, the MATRA code predicts the test results of the fluid temperature within ${\pm}$1.0 % of error. According to the experimental results on CHF of 5 non-heating guide tubes, the case with non-heating guide tube showed a little good performance in terms of CHF.

  • The HANARO in-chimney bracket was proposed as a structure which supports the guide tubes of irradiation facilities at the irradiation sites of CT, IR and OR4/5 in HANARO core for the reduction of flow-induced vibration and seismic response of the irradiation facilities. For the evaluation of the structural integrity of the in-chimney bracket, its finite element model is developed. The seismic response analysis was performed for the in-chimney bracket and related reactor structures, under the response spectrum of OBE and SSE. The analysis results show that stress values of the in-chimney bracket and reactor structures for the seismic loads are within the ASME code limits. It is also confirmed that its fatigue usage factor is much less than 1.0. For the verification of the implementation effects of the in-chimney bracket, the vibration level of the guide tube of the instrumented fuel assembly, which is subjected to fluid-induced vibration, was measured and analyzed. The vibration analysis results demonstrate that the vibration level of the instrumented fuel assembly has been remarkably reduced after installing the in-chimney bracket. Therefore, when the in-chimney bracket is installed at the reactor chimney, any damage on the structural integrity is not expected.

  • Burnup of spent fuel should be determined accurately for the safety control of spent fuel. Especially, it is necessary to measure the burnup profile along the nuclear fuel axis. In the present work, an ionization chamber was designed and fabricated to measure the gamma ray profile inside the guide tube of spent fuel. The ionization chamber was composed of three parts; induction part, gas-inlet part, and sensor part. The sensor part had two electrodes; cathode and anode. A guide electrode was considered in the ionization chamber design to make the ionization chamber to be inserted easily into the guide tube. Pure gas (argon and xenon) was inserted into the ionization chamber, and the leakage current and saturation curve were measured to determine the operation characteristics of the ionization chamber. The gamma ray radiation was also measured in relatively high dose environment. The gamma ray profile of the spent fuel will be measured with the ionization chamber.

  • The cowl cross bar of an automobile is a frame component that is installed inside the cockpit module to provide a guide surface, to which functional components for electricity and air condition are attached. In the recent years, the geometries of cowl cross bars are getting more complex in order to meet the demands of a wide variety of embedded functional components and the reduced weight of frame parts with enhanced mechanical and noise/vibration characteristics. There for, welding processes between tubes with different diameters are widely conducted while the welded parts are experiencing various problems such as undermined appearance, low production efficiency and poor mechanical characteristics. Therefore, this paper seeks to develop an one-piece forming process which eliminate welding process for the cowl cross bar by applying the tube drawing process. However, it was predicted that a conventional tube drawing can not be applied directly to the current part since the area reduction ratio of the drawing process reaches 51.7% which exceeds the general limiting value. Therefore, in this study, a combined drawing process which adds a compressive force to a tensile force of the conventional drawing process was proposed and 2-stage drawing process was designed by using CAE analyses. In addition, drawing tryouts were carried out by using the manufactured combined drawing machine in order to verify the designed process.

  • This paper reports the results of a recent experimental study into the behavior of welded fin-plate connections to both hollow and concrete filled tubular (CFT) columns under shear. Experiments have been performed at both ambient and elevated temperatures with the aid of an electric kiln. The observed failure modes include fracture of the fin plate and tearing out of the tube around the welds. By considering the results of previously published research, the current design method for similar connections under purely tensile load, in CIDECT Guide 9, based on a deformation limit of 3% of the tube width is shown to be inadequate when evaluating the ultimate strength of such connections. By comparing the results from the current test program which failed in the fin-plate with Eurocode guidance for failure of a fin-plate alone under shear and bending load it is shown that the column face influences the overall connection strength regardless of failure mode. Concrete in-fill is observed to significantly increase the strength of connections over empty specimens, and circular column specimens were observed to exhibit greater strength than similarly proportioned square columns. A finite element (F.E.) model, developed using ABAQUS, is presented and validated against the experimental results in order that extensive parametric tests may be subsequently performed. When validating the model against elevated temperature tests it was found that using reduction factors suggested in published research for the specific steel grades improved results over applying the generic Eurocode elevated temperature steel strength reduction factors.

  • This paper presents a new colonoscopy training simulator that includes a specialized haptic device and graphics algorithms to transfer haptic sensation through a long and flexible tube, and manage large number of polygons. The developed haptic device makes the colonoscope tube move along the two guiding rods in the translational direction. The torque of the roll motion is transferred by a timing belt and pulleys. A special guide is developed, which allows the force and torque from the motors to be transmitted to the user without loss. The haptic device is evaluated by physicians. One of the important skills of the colonoscopy, jiggling is incorporated for the first time by the developed sensor mechanism using photo-sensors. A colonoscope handle that shares the look, feel, and functions with the actual colonoscope, is developed with the necessary electronics inside. The number of polygons is reduced by an edge-collapse algorithm for real-time simulation. The algorithms to import CT data, to segment the colon image, to extract centerline of the colon, and to construct the colon surface, are integrated into a Colon Modeling Kit system that performs all these processes in real-time.

  • Hydraulic instability associated with pressure fluctuations is a serious problem in hydraulic machinery. Pressure fluctuations are usually a result of a strong vortex created in the centre of a flow at the outlet of a runner. At every radial turbine and also at every single regulating axial turbine, the draft tube vortex appears at part-load operating regimes. The consequences of the vortex developed in the draft tube are very unpleasant pressure pulsation, axial and radial forces and torque fluctuation as well as turbine structure vibration. The consequences of the vortex are transferred upstream and downstream with amplitude and frequency modulation in respect of the turbine operating regime, cavitation conditions and air admitted content. Numerical prediction of the vortex appearance in the design stage is a very important task. The amplitude of the pressure pulsation is different for each operating regime therefore the main goal of this research was to numerically predict pressure pulsation amplitude versus different guide vane openings and to compare the results with experimental ones. For the numerical flow analysis of a complete Francis turbine (FT), the computer code ANSYS-CFX11 has been used.

  • Thoracic sympathetic ganglion block(TSGB) with alcohol is a traditional method for treating a variety of disease at pain clinics. But it is a difficult block to perform requiring both skill and experience. Therefore, we performed a thoracic endoscopic cauterization to evaluate the efficacy of this method. A patient suffering sever forearm and hand pain due to radius fracture of the right arm, one and half years earlier, was referred to several different orthopaedic department of various hospitals with continued aggravated symptoms. He was then admitted to our hospital's orthopaedic department. Our diagnosis, confirmed by thermography, revealed reflex sympathetic dystrophy. Patients was therefore referred to the pain clinic where treatment consisted of endoscopic thoracic sympathetic cauterization under general anesthesia. Patient was intubated with Robertashow 37 Fr. double lumen tube left sided. Left lateral and slight head up position was applied to make lesion side up. Incisions were made to penetrate trocas 5 mm diamether on 4 th intercostal space along mid axillary line and midclavicular line. Negative pressure suction on ipsilateral lung and CO2 insufflation under 10 mmHg was applied to reduce lung size. Cauterization on thoracic sympathetic chain at T3 level was done under endoscoic guide. 24 Fr. chest tube was inserted. Patient's symptoms cleared and he was satisfied with the results of this treatment.

  • In meeting the technical needs for deepwater conditions and overcoming the shortfalls of single-layer pipes for deepwater applications, pipe-in-pipe (PIP) systems have been developed. While, for PIP pipelines directly laid on the seabed or with partial embedment, one of the primary service risks is lateral buckling. The critical axial force is a key factor governing the global lateral buckling response that has been paid much more attention. It is influenced by global imperfections, submerged weight, stiffness, pipe-soil interaction characteristics, et al. In this study, Finite Element Models for imperfect PIP systems are established on the basis of 3D beam element and tube-to-tube element in Abaqus. A parameter study was conducted to investigate the effects of these parameters on the critical axial force and post-buckling forms. These parameters include structural parameters such as imperfections, clearance, and bulkhead spacing, pipe/soil interaction parameter, for instance, axial and lateral friction properties between pipeline and seabed, and load parameter submerged weight. Python as a programming language is been used to realize parametric modeling in Abaqus. Some conclusions are obtained which can provide a guide for the design of PIP pipelines.
