A practical range estimator based on the robust Kalman filter is proposed to solve the range estimation problem for surface to air missile(SAM) homing guidance. Apart from the previous works based on the extended Kalman filter(EKF) with bearing only measurement, the proposed scheme makes use of line-of-sight(LOS) rate to ensure the fast convergency at long-range. In this reason, the robust Kalman filter is considered to deal with LOS rate measurement error. The recursive linear structure of proposed filter is easy to implement and make it possible to reduce computational burdens. Moreover, it shows good estimation performance without specific guidance law such as oscillation proportional navigation guidance(OPNG).

For implementing the proportional navigation guidance law on passive homing missiles equipped with strapdown imaging infrared seekers, the line-of-sight angles and rates with respect to the inertial frame should be estimated by carefully handling the parasitic instability effect due to the seeker's latency. By introducing a new state vector representation along with the Pade approximation for compensating the time-delay of the seeker, this paper proposes a new guidance filter structure, stochastic dynamic models and measurement equations, in three-dimensional homing problem. Then, it derives the line-of-sight angle and rate estimator in general two-dimensional engagement by applying the extended Kalman filter to the proposed structure. The estimation performance and the characteristics of the proposed filter were evaluated via a series of numerical experiments.

In this paper, we propose a guidance filter to estimate line of sight rate with strapdown seeker measurements and INS(Inertial Navigation System) information. The measurements of proposed guidance filter consisted of the LOS(Line of Sight) and relative position that can be calculated with the seeker's measurements, INS information and known target position, also the filter is based on an asynchronous filter to use outputs of the two sensors that are out of synchronous and period. Through the proposed filter, we can reduce the effect on parasitic loop that can be caused by using large time delay seeker and improve the estimation performance.

A MTG (Multimode Tracking and Guidance) system is employed to compensate for the limitations of individual seekers such as RF (Radio frequency) or IIR (Imaging Infra-red) and to improve the overall tracking and guidance performance in jamming, clutter, and adverse weather environments. In the MTG system, tracking filter, data association, and data fusion methods are important elements to maximize the effectiveness of precision homing missile guidance. This paper proposes the formulation of a Kalman filter for the estimation of line-of-sight rate from seeker measurements in missiles guided by proportional navigation. Also, we suggest the HPDA (Highest Probability Data Association) and data fusion methods of the MTG system for target tracking in the adverse environments. Mont-Carlo simulation is employed to evaluate the overall tracking performance and guidance accuracy.

In this paper, an effective filter structure for filtering of target glint in tracking radar systems is used to improve the performance of CLOS(Command to Line-Of-Sight) guidance. The filter decouples range and angel channels to that it has a sound mathematical basis as well as computation efficiency as applied to the IMM algorithm. The effective filter structure in conjunction with CLOS guidance is tested by a series of simulation runs and it is shown to have superior performance compared with the other filter structures.
A practical filter is suggested for ground-Dasea missile tracking in a capture guidance mode, utilizing angle-only measurements from a passive sensor and its performance is evaluated by a realistic system simulation study. Also suggested is a missile acceleration model that provides inputs to the filter. The suggested filter has a decoupled structure of independent azimuth and elevation channels with efficiency in commutation time and memory requirements.

A practical recursive WLS (weighted least squares) algorithm is proposed to estimate relative range using LOS (line-of-sight) information for ASM (anti-ship missile) application. Apart from the previous approaches based on the EKF (extended Kalman filter), to ensure good convergence properties in long range engagement situations, the proposed scheme utilizes LOS rate measurements instead of conventionally used LOS angle measurements. The estimation error property for the proposed filter is investigated and a simple error compensator is devised to enhance its estimation error performances. Simulation results indicate that the proposed filter produces very accurate range estimates with extremely small computations.

Precision guidance filter design for a tactical missile with a strapdown seeker aided by low-cost strapdown sensors has been addressed in this paper. The low-cost strapdown sensors consist of an IMU with 3-axis accelerometers and gyroscopes, 3-axis magnetometers, and a barometer. Missile's position, velocity, attitude, and bias error of the barometer are considered as state variables. Since the state and measurement equations are highly nonlinear, we adopt UKF(Unscented Kalman Filter). The proposed guidance filter has a function of a navigation filter if target position error is not considered. In the case that the target position error is introduced, the proposed filter can effectively estimate the relative states of the missile to the true target. For specific engagement scenarios, we can observe that observability problems occur.
This paper deals with 3-dimensional missile guidance law. This presents the general optimal solution of the state equation which includes the target maneuvering as the Gauss-Markov processing. The main results ore about the transformation between the Cartesian coordinates on which both the guidance law and the filter are bused and the polar coordinates system in real missile guidance and measurement information. And the extended Kalman filter and adjustment of the estimated target acceleration by triangular functions is proposed solution to this transformation problem. It is shown that this proposed transformation is valid in real 3-dimensional guidance problem by the computer simulation.

Recent development in seeker technology explores a new seeker design in which, with larger field-of-view (FOV), optical parts are strapped down to a body (hence, called as a body-fixed seeker or a strapdown seeker). This design has several advantages such as comparatively easier maintenance and calibration by removing complex mechanical moving parts, increasing reliability, and cost savings. On the other hand, the strapdown seeker involves difficulties in implementing guidance laws since it does not directly provide inertial LOS rates. Instead, information for generating guidance commands should be extracted by estimating missile/target relative motion utilizing target images on the image plane of a strapdown seeker. In this research, a new framework based on an unscented Kalman filter is developed for estimating missile/target relative motion on the simplified assumption of a point source target. Performance of a terminal guidance algorithm, in which guidance command is generated based on the estimated relative motion, is demonstrated by a missile/target engagement simulation.
