  • Tree-harvesting worker data of 508 separate worker accidents are analyzed and an exploratory approach taken. The worker accident data cover a sample of five years. The scope of the study was the southeastern United States of America. As might be hypothesized, the chainsaw was the most hazardous type of tree-harvesting equipment. It accounted for 55% of the tree-harvesting accidents. Most chainsaw accidents resulted in injuries to the lower extremities and were more frequent among younger employees. The probability of one or more chainsaw accidents occurring in any 30-day period was approximately 0.856. Chainsaw accidents were more likely to occur in late morning and early afternoon. We used statistical tools such as Pareto charts, c-charts and Ishikawa diagrams. Such tools are useful in diagnosing the root-cause of tree-harvesting worker accidents and help in developing preventive safety programs. Recommendations to help improve the quality of information of accident data collected by insurance companies and others are briefly given. The strategy and culture of continuous process improvements are stressed.

  • An efficient technique fur the calculation of guided wave dispersion curves in composite pipes is presented. The technique uses a forward-calculating variational calculus approach rather than the guess and iterate process required when using the more traditional partial wave superposition technique. The formulation of each method is outlined and compared. The forward-calculating formulation is used to develop finite element software for dispersion curve calculation. Finally, the technique is used to calculate dispersion curves for several structures, including an isotropic bar, two multi-layer composite bars, and a composite pipe.

  • Traditional section-based method develops blank along section planes and find trimming line by generating loop of end points. This method suffers from inaccurate results for regions with out-of-section motion. In this study, new fast method to find feasible trimming line is proposed. One step FEM is used to analyze the flanging and incremental development method is proposed to handle bad-shaped mesh and undercut part. Also in order to remedy mesh distortion during development, energy minimization technique is utilized. The proposed method is verified by shrink/stretch flange forming and successfully applied to the complex industrial applications such as door outer flanging process.

  • A finite element inverse analysis is utilized to consider forming effects of an S-rail on the assessment of the crashworthiness with small amount of computation time. A crash analysis can be directly performed after the inverse simulation of a forming process without a smoothing or remeshing scheme. The direct mesh mapping method is used to calculate an initial guess from a sliding constraint surface that is extracted from the die and punch set. Analysis results demonstrate that energy absorption of structures is increased when simulation considers forming effects of thickness variation and work hardening. The finite element inverse analysis is proved to be an effective tool in consideration of forming effects for the crash analysis.

  • There are many methods to find solutions for Integer Programming problems (IPs) such as the Branch-Bound philosophy or the Cutting Plane algorithm. However, most of them have a problem that is the explosion of sets in the computing process. In addition, GA is known as a heuristic search algorithm for solutions of optimization problems. It is started from a random initial guess solution and attempting to find one that is the best under some criteria and conditions. The paper will study an artificial intelligent method to solve IPs by using Genetic Algorithms (GAs). The original solution of this was presented in the papers of Fabricio Olivetti de Francaand and Kimmo Nieminen [2003]. However, both have several limitations which causes could be operations in GAs. The paper proposes a method to upgrade these operations and computational results are also shown to support these upgrades.

  • Theoretical definitions of mixed behavior of PE panel and connote should have preceded to cause a mixed behavior of connote and polyethylene which have different elastic module, one-line expansion coefficients, poison ratios, compressive strengths and tensile strengths. Consequently, changes are analyzed through experiment process to identify the effects on interpretation of mixed behavior on the basis of temperature change of structures, temperature rise of concrete other than PE panel due to hydration heat temperature rise of concrete other than PE panel due to drying and contraction, working of hydrostatic pressure by storage and temperature gradient From the results of interpretation of the analysis, it is concluded that PE panel have slight influences on the change of guess of structures and maintains structural stability compared with concrete structures without PE panel.

  • In last decades, several linearization methods for the AOA measurements have been proposed, for example, Gauss-Newton method and closed-form solution. Gauss-Newton method can achieve high accuracy, but the convergence of the iterative process is not always ensured if the initial guess is not accurate enough. Closed-form solution provides a non-iterative solution and it is less computational. It does not suffer from convergence problem, but estimation error is somewhat larger. This paper proposes a self-tuning weighted least square AOA algorithm that is a modified version of the conventional closed-form solution. In order to estimate the error covariance matrix as a weight, two-step estimation technique is used. Simulation results show that the proposed method has smaller positioning error compared to the existing methods.

  • This study investigated how 5th grade students found and understood triangle congruence conditions (SSS, SAS, ASA). In particular, this study focused on children's processes of discovering triangle congruence conditions and the obstacles which they encountered in the process of making sense of these conditions. Our data indicates that inquiring the cases in which less than three factors of triangle are given is helpful for children to guess triangle congruence conditions and understand the minimal characteristic of these conditions. And the degree of difficulty of discovering each congruence condition is different. Children discovered SAS condition and ASA condition easily, but it was hard for them to discover and understand that SSS was also a triangle congruence condition because they connected the length of a given side with the use of a scaled ruler not a compass.

  • In this paper we apply statistical reliability tools to manage and seek improvements in the strengths of medium density fiberboard (MDF). As a part of the MDF manufacturing process, the product undergoes destructive testing at various intervals to determine compliance with customer′s specifications. Workers perform these tests over sampled cross sections of the MDF panel to measure the internal bond (IB) in pounds per square inches until failure. We explore both graphically and statistically this "pressure-to-failure" of MDF. Also, we briefly comment on reducing sources of variability in the IB of MDF.

  • Carbon nanotube films were fabricated by the catalytic CVD method. Plasma processed time effects on the field emission property were studied. The atomic structure was observed by using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The surface composition changes were observed on the plasma processed CNT films. The O1s/C1s signal ratio and the Fls/Cls signal ratio changed from 1.1 % to 24.65 % and from 0 % to 3.1 % with plasma process time, respectively. We could guess it from these results that the Ar plasma process could change the surface composition effectively. In the case of the original-CNT film, no carbon shift was observed. In the case of the Ar plasma processed CNT films, however the oxygen related carbon shifts were observed. This oxygen related carbon shift at higher binding energy implies the increment of amount of the oxygen. It's possible that the increment of these bonds between carbon and oxygen results in the improvement of field emission performance.
