The anatomical structure of the brain reflects a great amount of information about an individual's cognitive ability. The present study reviewed research on developmental changes in brain structure in relation to biological maturation and intellectual growth focusing on children and adolescents. The purpose of the present study was to achieve an understanding of how children and adolescents' brain matures with development and also to examine whether individual differences in intelligence influences the development of brain structure. The first section introduces methods of measurement and analysis of brain structure, such as voxel-based morphometry and structural covariance. The second section reviews studies on the biological maturation of the brain and variables that influence brain development such as sex, environmental factors, and mental disorders, etc. The third section introduces the Parieto-Frontal Integration Theory of intelligence and reviews studies on the association between intelligence and developmental changes of the brain, including changes in structural covariance and functional connectivity. We conclude with a discussion on educational/clinical implications of this work and directions for future studies.
Purpose : One of the major complication of arterial catheterization is the thrombosis of the iliac or femoral arteries. Tissue loss following femoral artery catheterization is rare. However longterm sequelae such as impaired limb growth and future impairment of vascular access, are also important in pediatric cardiac patients. But standard methods to treat thrombotic complication of arterial catheterization in infants and children is not established. The present study was performed to assess the efficacy of intraarterial catheter-directed urokinase infusion in infants and children with limb ischemia due to arterial thrombosis after cardiac catheterization. Methods : From January 1994 to August 2002, 12 patients with thrombotic femoral artery occlusion after arterial catheterization were treated with catheter-directed urokinase infusion in Dong-A University Hospital. Retrospective analysis of the medical records and angiograms was conducted. Results : The incidence of femoral artery thrombosis after retrograde arterial catheterization, which had not responded to systemic infusion of heparin and/or urokinase, was 2.8 percent. The doses of urokinase were 1,000-4,400 unit/kg/hr and duration of infusion was $50.6{\pm}29.2$ hours(18-110 hours). Clot resolution was complete in all patients who started to receive the intraarterial urokinase infusion within four days after catheterization. Only partial thrombolysis was seen in two patients who were treated with intraarterial urokinase on the 12th and 19th days after thrombus formation. Balloon angioplasty was done for these two patients with partial success. Bleeding complications were seen in two cases. Conclusion : Early use of catheter-directed intraarterial infusion of urokinase is safe and effective in thrombolysis of femoral artery occlusion after cardiac catheterization in infants and children.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection and iron-deficiency anemia in pubescent children, susceptible to iron deficiency due to the high iron requirements for growth. Methods: Hemoglobin, serum iron, total iron-binding capacity, serum ferritin, and serum IgG antibodies to H. pylori were measured in 937 children (475 boys and 462 girls). Their ages ranged from 10 to 18 years. The prevalences of H. pylori infection were compared between groups, based on the presence or absence of anemia, hypoferritinemia, iron deficiency, and iron-deficiency anemia. The levels of hemoglobin, serum iron, total iron-binding capacity, transferrin saturation, and serum ferritin were obtained according to the presence or absence of H. pylori infection. Results: The prevalences of anemia, iron deficiency, iron-deficiency anemia, and H. pylori infection were 8.1%, 9.1%, 3.1%, and 20.8%, respectively. The H. pylori-positive rates in anemia, hypoferritinemia, and iron-deficiency group were 34.2%, 29.5%, and 35.3%, respectively, compared to 19.6% in the non-anemia group, 19.2% in the non-hypoferritinemia group, and 19.4% in the non-iron deficiency group. The H. pylori-positive rate in the iron-deficiency anemia group was 44.8% in comparison with 20.0% in the non-iron-deficiency anemia group. Hemoglobin and iron levels did not show any significant differences between the H. pylori-positive and -negative groups, whereas the serum ferritin level decreased significantly in the H. pylori-infected group. Conclusion: H. pylori infection is thought to be associated with iron deficiency in pubescent children.
The purpose of this study is to examine longitudinal impacts of various factors on happiness in primary school children. Specifically, attachment theory and ecosystems perspective were utilized for the purpose of this study. We used Korea Youth Panel Survey, which is a 5-year longitudinal data collected from fourth grade in elementary school to second grade in middle school Latent growth model was employed as the analytic method. The findings of this study are as follow: first, academic achievement, self-esteem, parent attachment, peer attachment, teacher attachment, and community attachment all decreased over the 5-year study period. Also, the intercept and the slope variance of variables were found to be statistically significant. This means that there are significant differences in the intercept and the slope of individuals. Second, self-esteem, parent attachment, and peer attachment were found to have cross-sectional influences on happiness. This means that self-esteem, parent attachment, and peer attachment are positively associated with happiness at the intercept. Also, self-esteem, parent attachment, teacher attachment, and community attachment were found to have longitudinal influences on happiness. This means that the higher levels of community attachment at the intercept is associated with slower the rate of decrease in happiness at the slope. In addition, faster rates of decrease in self-esteem, parent attachment, teacher attachment, and community attachment are associated with faster the rate of decrease in happiness. Third, this study conducted multiple group analysis with gender. The findings of this analysis revealed no significant differences in analytic models between males and females. Based on these findings, theoretical and practice implications with regard to happiness in primary school children are discussed.
Internet addiction is currently regarded as a problem for its negative function in the information-oriented society. Particularly in cases of elementary schoolchildren in their growth period, it is very important to grasp the schoolchildren's conditions in advance and guide them on a systematic basis before they get into the habit of addiction to the Internet. For this purpose, several research papers have already discussed the seriousness of Internet addiction. This research is aimed at conducting a positive research work on to what extent such academic research results had affected educational fields, and also at what level the seriousness of Internet addiction is staying at the present moment. For this, this research conducted a survey of the Internet addiction level for fourth, fifth, and sixth graders totalling in 448 from one elementary school located within the jurisdiction of Gyeongsangbuk-do through the on-line system and questionnaires from March 31 to April 3, 2008. And also looked into the level of perception on Internet addiction for 29 teachers within the surveyed school. The results of this study show that 90.1 percent(408 children) of the surveyed children were a member of a general user group. Such aspects are thought to have resulted from some factors that functioned in a positive way, such as teachers' proper perception on Internet addiction and their proper guidance against this, and plenty of conversation at the children's homes, and the children's smooth relationship between their friends and teachers.
The aim of this paper is to suggest some ways of moral education for the building of children's social awareness and relationship skills as social and emotional competencies. Based on the social and emotional learning(SEL), this paper is tried to provide the effective ways to develop children's social awareness and relationship skill. According to SEL, social and emotional competence is the ability to understand, manage, and express the social and emotional aspects of one's life in ways that enable the successful management of life tasks such as learning, forming relationships, solving everyday problems, and adapting to the complex demands of growth and development. And it is also the process of acquiring and effectively applying the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to recognize and manage emotions. Five key competencies such as self-awareness, social awareness, responsible decision making, self-management, relationship skills are taught, practiced, and reinforced through SEL programming. Moral education and social and emotional learning have emerged as two prominent formal approaches used schools to provide guidance for students' behavior. social awareness and relationship skills are necessary for succeeding in school, in the family, in the community, in life in general. Equipped with such skills, attitudes and beliefs, young children are more likely to make healty, caring, ethical, and responsible decisions and to avoid engaging in behaviors with negative consequences such as interpersonal violence and bullying.
Purpose: This study evaluated the prevalence of the metabolic syndrome (MetS) and risk factors for metabolic derangement in young adults with childhood-onset hypopituitary growth hormone deficiency (ACOHGHD). Methods: Thirty patients with ACOHGHD who were treated with hormone-replacement therapy, aged 18 to 29 years, who visited the Seoul National University Children's Hospital between September 2009 and February 2010 were enrolled. Height, weight, waist circumference, hip circumference, and blood pressure were measured, and the clinical and hormonal features were reviewed retrospectively. We evaluated measures of metabolic derangement in the enrolled patients and in the data of healthy adults aged 20 to 29 years taken from the 2005 Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) as part of the National Cholesterol Education Program-the Adult Treatment Panel III. Results: Compared with the KNHANES participants, patients with ACOHGHD had significantly large waist circumference (men and women), high systolic blood pressure (BP) (women) and diastolic BP (men), and high serum triglyceride levels (women). The duration of illness correlated significantly with central obesity ($r^2$=0.546, $P$=0.003). The prevalence of MetS was 10% in patients with ACOHGHD and 2.3% in KNHANES participants. The prevalence of central obesity and MetS was higher in patients with ACOHGHD than in KNHANES participants ($P$<0.001 and $P$=0.042, respectively). Conclusion: Abdominal obesity correlated with the duration of illness in patients with ACOHGHD. Waist circumference should be measured in the clinic to prevent MetS, particularly in patients with a long history of ACOHGHD, regardless of age or sex.

Background and Objective: We aimed to investigate long-term clinical and echocardiographic outcomes, including tricuspid valve durability, annular growth, and left ventricular reverse remodeling, after modified cone reconstruction in patients with Ebstein's anomaly. Methods: This was a retrospective analysis of all pediatric patients who underwent modified cone reconstruction for Ebstein's anomaly at a single tertiary center between January 2005 and June 2021. Results: A total of 14 pediatric patients underwent modified cone reconstruction for Ebstein's anomaly; the median age was 5.8 years (range, 0.01-16.6). There were three patients (21.4%) with Carpentier type B, ten patients with Carpentier type C (71.4%), and one patient with Carpentier type D (7.1%). There was no early or late mortality, arrhythmia, or readmission for heart failure at a 10-year follow-up. There were no cases of more than mild tricuspid stenosis or more than moderate tricuspid regurgitation during the study period, except for one patient with severe tricuspid regurgitation who underwent reoperation. The z value for tricuspid valve annular size significantly decreased immediately after the operation (2.46 vs. -1.15, p<0.001). However, from 1 year to 7 years after surgery, the z values were maintained between -1 and +1. Left ventricular end-systolic volume, end-diastolic volume, and stroke volume increased after surgery and remained elevated until seven years postoperatively. Conclusions: Ebstein's anomaly in children can be repaired by modified cone reconstruction with low mortality and morbidity, good tricuspid valve durability, and annular growth relative to somatic growth.
The purpose of this study was to investigate teacher's perceptions about the nutrition education of elementary schools. A total of 226 elementary school teachers within Changwon and Milyang city participated in this study. The results of this study were as follows. 90.8% of the teachers responded that nutrition education is necessaty in the elementary schools, and positive responses in the Milyang urban area were higher than that of the Changwon rural area(p<0.001). The main reason for the necessity of nutrition education was for proper growth and good table manners and the Milyang urban city was significantly higher than three other classes in ‘for proper growth’(p<0.05). The starting period for nutrition education was supported by 72.1% of the teachers as beging when the children are in kindergarten, proving that this early nutrition education is supported. Especially in the Changwon urban support was higher than in the three other classes(p<0.01). The perceptions about a suitable person to teach nutrition indicated parents(39.6%), dietitions(35.5%), class teachers(24.9%), and the beliefs about nutrition specialists or dietitions was very low. 53.6% of the teachers responded that they would not teach nutrition education themselves and the main reason for this was that believed the teacher's work would be too hard(32.0%), lack of nutrition knowledge(29.4%), and that such courses should be taught courses by specialists(29.4%). However, 51.6% of the teachers disagreed with having a separate course for nutrition education. Proper eating habits(62.7%) and growth and nutrition(28.6%) were the main categories within nutrition education. The teacher recognized that elementary students' nutrition problem is to eat too much processed and instant foods(39.1%), deviated foods(36.9%), and lack of table manners(19.4%). The most effect method was to link the subject matter with the parents(38.7%), use of audio visuals and education materials(28.3%), and need of nutrition education teachers(10.1%) was low.
