A Case Report of Efficacy of Growth Height and Peak-Luteinizing Hormone Level Suppression on Idiopathic Gonadotropin-Dependent Precocious Puberty Patient Using Herbal Remedy, Aesopjiyoun-tang

  • The purpose of this report is to evaluate effect of Korean medical treatment on idiopathic gonadotropin-dependent precocious puberty (G-DPP) patient received herbal medicine. We administered Aesopjiyoun-tang remedy to idiopathic G-DPP and analyzed the delay effect by hormonal value and radiographs; the height growth effect by measurement of height. After Korean medical treatment, suppression effect to peak-Luteinizing Hormone level (LHL) is 14.39IU/L to 10.9IU/L for 13month, growth effect to height value is 11cm/13month; and change of mean growth velocity (MGV) is 6.08cm/year to 10.06cm/year. The gain in height by treatment is 3.98cm/year. The result suggests Aesopjiyoun-tang can be an effective treatment for G-DPP. Herbal medicine can be used as an alternative treatment in place of the GnRH treatment.

다운증후군아동의 건강지도를 위한 발육차트의 작성 (Growth Chart for Growth-Assesment of Down Syndrome in Korea)

  • This study's purpose is to clarify the growth pattern of Down Syndrome cases -particulary centering on the adolescent growth pattern - and to draw up a standard growth chart on body height and weight which is one estimation of physical growth for the effective caring of their health. I sampled 269 Down syndrome cases (Male 151, Female 118) whose ages ranged from 6 years of age to adulthood and 348 normal control cases (Male 175, Female 173) who were in same age group with Down Syndrome. We also picked 124 Down syndromes cases(Male 70, Female 54) and gathered 8 year longitudinal data on their body height and weight. The results were that, I found Down syndrome cases' height to be short and their weight to be overweight. As far as age at peak height velocity was concerned, boys were at 11-12 years of age and girls were at 10-11 years of age, showing that girls were about one year faster. Peak height velocity was 6.8cm/yr for boys and 5.4cm/yr for girls. The age at peak weight velocity were 12-13 years for age for boys and 10-11 years of age for girls. Peak weight velocity was 5.7kg/yr for boys and 4.3kg/yr for girls. The menarche age of girls with Down syndrome was anticipated to come about 2 years after peak height velocity and peak weight velocity. Finally, we drew up a standard growth chart and compared it with that of the NCHS, which caused us to come to the conclusion that the Standard Growth Chart for Down syndrome cases in Korea that came out of this study was appropriate for the growth-assesment of Down syndrome.

Growth curve estimates for wither height, hip height, and body length of Hanwoo steers (Bos taurus coreanae)

  • Growth curves in Hanwoo steers were estimated by Gompertz, Von Bertalanffy, Logistic, and Brody nonlinear models using growth data collected by the Hanwoo Improvement Center from a total of 6,973 Hanwoo (Bos taurus coreanae) steers 6 to 24 months old that were born between 1996 and 2015. The data included three parameters: A, mature size of body measurement; b, growth ratio; and, k, intrinsic growth rate. Nonlinear regression equations for wither height according to Gompertz, Von Bertalanffy, Logistic, and Brody models were $Y_t=144.7e^{-0.5869e^{-0.00301t}}$, $Y_t=145.3(1-0.1816e^{-0.00284t})^3$, $Y_t=143.1(1+0.7356e^{-0.00352t})^{-1}$, and $Y_t=146.8(1+0.4700e^{-0.00249t})^1$, respectively, while those for hip height were $Y_t=144.5e^{-0.5549e^{-0.00312t}}$, $Y_t=145.0(1-0.1724e^{-0.00295t})^3$, $Y_t=143.1(1+0.6863e^{-0.00360t})^{-1}$, and $Y_t=146.2(1+0.4501e^{-0.00263t})^1$, respectively. Equations for body length $Y_t=174.1e^{-0.8342e^{-0.00289t}}$, $Y_t=175.8(1-0.2500e^{-0.00265t})^3$, $Y_t=170.0(1+1.1548e^{-0.00363t})^{-1}$, and $Y_t=180.3(1+0.6077e^{-0.00215t})^1$, respectively, for the same models. Among the four models, the Brody model resulted in the lowest mean square error, with mean square errors of 31.79, 30.57, and 42.13, respectively, for wither height, hip height, and body length. Also, an estimated birth wither height, birth hip height, and birth body length (77.98, 80.57, and 70.97 cm, respectively) were lower in the Brody model than in other models. An inflection point was not observed during the growth phase of Hanwoo steer according to the growth curves calculated using Gompertz, Von Bertalanffy, and Logistic models. Based on the results, we concluded that the regression equation using the Brody model was the most appropriate among the four growth models. To obtain more accurate parameters, however, using data from a wider production period (from birth to shipping) would be required, and the development of a suitable model for body conformation traits would be needed.

뉴로피드백 훈련이 후천적 요인의 자기조절력과 키 성장에 미치는 영향 (The Effects of Neuro-feedback Training on Self-regulation of Acquired Factors and Height Growth)

  • 본 연구는 뉴로피드백 훈련을 적용하여 생활습관을 조절하는 자기조절력과 키 성장간의 상관성을 규명함으로 써 키 성장의 효과적인 중재 방안에 대한 해법을 제시하고자 실시하였다. 이를 위해 키 성장 프로그램을 실시하고 있는 초등학교 2학년~4학년 학생 40명(실험군 20명, 대조군 20명) 대상으로 뉴로피드백 훈련 전 후의 변화를 확인하였다. 실험기간은 3개월간(주 2회), 훈련시간은 1회 30분이였다. 뉴로피드백 훈련을 적용한 실험군과 대조군의 자기조절력 차이를 분석한 후, 키 성장 차이를 비교 분석하였다. 첫째, 뉴로피드백 훈련을 적용한 실험군이 대조군에 비해 자기조절력에 유의미한 변화가 있었다. 둘째, 뉴로피드백 훈련을 적용한 실험군이 대조군에 비해 더 크게 키 성장의 변화가 있었다. 이상의 결과를 종합하면 뉴로피드백 훈련이 성장기 학생들에게 있어 키 성장의 후천적 요인들 중 생활습관을 조절하는 자기조절력에 긍정적인 영향을 미치며, 그로 인해 키 성장에도 긍정적인 영향을 미친다는 것이 확인되었다.

소아 키 성장에 미치는 한삼덩굴추출분말의 유효성 및 안전성을 평가하기 위한 무작위배정, 이중눈가림, 위약 대조 인체적용시험: 인체적용시험 프로토콜 (Randomized, Double-blind, and Placebo-controlled Human Trial to Evaluate the Efficacy and Safety of Humulus japonicus Extract Powder on Child Height Growth: Study Protocol)

  • Objectives We aimed to confirm whether Humulus japonicus Extract Powder can enhance child height growth significantly and safely compared with a placebo. Methods A total of 150 children between the 3rd and 25th percentiles in height and between the ages of 6 and 9 years will be recruited to participate in this randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial. The participants will be randomly assigned to the treatment or placebo group. Participants in the treatment group will take one pack per day (700 mg of Humulus japonicus Extract Powder) for 24 weeks. Participants in the placebo group will take one package of placebo per day (0 mg of Humulus japonicus Extract Powder) for 24 weeks. The primary outcome will be a change in height after 12 weeks, and the secondary outcomes will be the height after 24 weeks, growth rate, height standard deviation, growth hormone, insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1), insulin-like growth factor binding protein-3 (IGFBP-3), bone alkaline phosphatase (BALP), and osteocalcin after 12 and 24 weeks. Results This protocol was approved by the Institutional Review Board (IRB) of the Korean Medicine Hospital of Busan University (IRB No. PNUKHIRB-2023-03-002). Research participants will be recruited from June 2023 to December 2023. Conclusions The results of this study provide clinical information regarding the effectiveness and safety of the Humulus japonicus Extract Powder in increasing child height.

소아 성장을 위한 한약투여에 대한 만족도와 기대치 조사 (A Study for Satisfaction and Expectation of Effect on the Growth of Children Treated with Herbal Medicine)

  • Objectives The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of herbal medicine in children's growth and to report the children's expectation. Methods 171 children visited the department of Pediatrics, Kyung-Hee Oriental Medical Hospital from June 2009 to December 2009 were studied. They were treated more than 6 months and they visited our clinic more than 3 times. Every time when patients visited our hospital, their height, body weight and obesity degree was examined using DS-102(dszenix, Seoul). Also, height percentile of first and the last visit was measured, and those were compared by the Growth Statistics Curve made by the Korean Association of Pediatrics, 2007. Results and Conclusions The mean growth of total children increased by 4.42 percent; the increased percent for boys was 4.17 and that of girls was 5.00. Herbal medical treatment helped growth in children who took medicine for growth retardation problem. Plus, majority of parents who visited the department of Pediatrics, Oriental Medical Hospital satisfied with the service and their children's height. Although thinking genetic factor is important for their height, but they think that herbal medical treatment help the growth with changing eating habit.

Survivability and Growth Performance of Sal (Shorea robusta C.F. Gaertn) with Compatible Associated and Naturally Grown Tropical Timber Tree Species in a Field Experiment at Madhupur Sal Forest, Bangladesh

  • This study aimed to develop a mixed plantation strategy, with Sal (Shorea robusta) as the primary tree species, along with four associated and two naturally grown tree species. Using a randomized complete block design (RCBD), the field experiment involved a control group (mono plantation) and three mixed plantation groups, each replicated four times, totaling 80 replicates (40 in 2019 and 40 in 2020). Survival rate, height and collar diameter growth of seedlings were recorded in both mono and mixed plots in July 2021. Statistical analyses, including one-way ANOVA on means from three replicate plots (p<0.05) and a Tukey HSD test, were conducted to assess differences between treatments. Significant differences in survival rates were found among mono plantations, with TMono04 showing the highest survival rate (88% to 91%). However, there were no significant differences in survival rates among seedlings in mixed plantations. Notably, survival rates were lower in mono plantations compared to mixed plantations. Mono plantations showed significant differences in height growth across both 2019 and 2020 plots, with TMono05 achieving the highest height growth (101.1 cm to 123.6 cm). Similarly, mixed plantations showed significant differences in height growth, with TMixed7 displaying the most substantial growth (116.4 cm to 138.2 cm). Overall, mixed plantations showed greater height growth compared to mono plantations. Significant variations in collar diameter growth were noted in both the 2019 and 2020 mono plantation plots, with TMono01 showing the highest growth (10.2 mm to 11.1 mm). Similarly, among mixed plantations, a significant difference in collar diameter growth was observed, with TMixed4 exhibiting the highest growth (10.4 mm to 13.1 mm). Overall, mixed plantations showed higher collar diameter growth compared to mono plantations. The findings suggest that planting Sal trees alongside compatible associated and naturally grown tree species in the Sal forests is preferable over establishing mono plantations.

보양성장탕 (補陽成長湯) 투여의 성장효과를 높이는 요인 분석 (Analysis of Factors Enhancing Growth Effect of Boyangsungjang-Tang)

  • Objectives The purpose of this study is to analyze factors that enhance growth effect after the administration of Boyangsungjang-Tang (補陽成長湯) to children and adolescents. Methods This clinical study has been carried out with 112 children and adolescents, who visited one University Oriental Medicine Hospital Pediatric department, from January 2009 to December 2010. They were treated on height-growth with Boyangsungjang-Tang (補陽成長湯). We used modified-intend to treat analysis to examine children who had their height and weight records six months after the treatment. We use PASW Statistics 18.0 to analyze what factors (Height percentile, Weight percentile, Age, Birth weight, Frequency of taking Medicine, Period of Treatment) enhanced the growth by using t-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson's correlation analysis. Results The mean value of the height percentile were significantly increased, $2.83{\pm}10.04$ ($36.61{\pm}27.02$ to $39.44{\pm}26.89$, P=0.004). The height percentile difference has significantly correlated with weight percentile (P<0.001) and height percentile (P<0.05). Weight less than 50 percentile (P<0.05), and treatment period more than 15 months (P<0.05) had significant impact on the height percentile differences. Conclusions If we have treated more than 15 months of Boyangsungjang-Tang (補陽成長湯) to children and adolescents whose weight are less than 50 percentile, we would have expected their height percentile to increase as $5.72{\pm}10.64$.

수완부골의 X-ray 영상 및 종골의 초음파 영상에서 측정한 골연령을 통한 소아성장에 관한 임상연구 (A Clinical Study on Growth and Development of Children Based on Their Bone Age Measured by Hand's X-ray Image and Calcaneus's Ultrasonic Image)

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study was to have better data and to make efficient clinical reviews about children's growth based on two methods; X-ray of hand, and ultrasound of calcaneus. Methods : The study was composed of 100 patients(50 of boys and 50 of girls) who visited in department of pediatrics, O O university oriental hospital considering growth and their development. Bone age was measured by the TW3 method's RUS score in simple X-ray image of hand and bone density through ultrasonic image of calcaneus. To predict children's estimated height, their parent's height, bone age, and present height's percentile was measured. Results and Conclusions : 1. The bone age results from X-ray image of hand and ultrasonic image of calcaneus were correlated. Younger children have older bone age from hand's X-ray than the one from calcaneus's ultrasound. Older children have older bone age from calcaneus's ultrasound than one from hand's X-ray. 2. Predicted adult height by bone age(BH) of hand's X-ray and BH of calcaneus's ultrasound were correlated, but predicted adult height by inheritance(IH) was not correlated with others. 3. Bone age and predicted adult height were correlated with age, height, weight, BMI, and especially with age and height. 4. Measuring bone age by X-ray image of hand and ultrasonic image of calcaneus was simple and effective way of estimating children's growth and development.
