  • This study utilizes various approaches for new topic detection in the process of assigning and updating descriptors, which is a representation method of the knowledge structure. Particularly in the case of occurring changes on the knowledge structure due to the appearance and development of new topics in specific study areas, new topic detection can be applied to solving the impossibility or limitation of the existing index terms in representing subject concepts. This study confirms that the majority of newly developing topics in information science are closely associated with each other and are simultaneously in the phase of growth and development. Also, this study shows the possibility that the use of candidate descriptor lists generated by new topic detection methods can be an effective tool in assisting indexers. In particular. the provision of candidate descriptor lists to help assignment of appropriate descriptors will contribute to the improvement of the effectiveness and accuracy of indexing.

  • In the respect of automobile history, the tendency to the development of automobiles for the latest 100 years has been leaded by technical performances. Especially, with the rapid growth of the newest electronic industry, the technical know-hows of automobiles improved in short terms have brought about outstanding results. The differences of the technical know-hows are little between some of the famous automobile manufacturing industries and the rising. So, now, the automobile design became a basis in selecting a car. The latest tendency to automobile style in accordance with the improvement of a universal life quality has been changed to a characteristic design meeting various needs of customers. RV, UV, MPV(and so forth ) meeting their needs made an appearance, or a characteristic model derived from them respectively appeared. We tried to study a new mini SUV-typed-concepcar design with a touch of the next concept. The whole design process from our researches to the end hard model was performed at the Design Center, Daewoo Automobile, based on the automobile design processes. Especially, We styled an automobile concept as inexpensive, characteristic, new one to have a car easily at the young and made an analysis of customers' responses for referring to this study in generating the next SUV-typed-automobile.

  • Nowadays, the traffic type and behavior are extremely diverse due to the growth of network speed and the appearance of various services on Internet. For efficient network operation and management, the importance of application-level traffic identification is more and more increasing in the area of traffic analysis. In recent years traffic identification methodology using statistical features of traffic flow has been broadly studied. However, there are several problems to be considered in the identification methodology base on statistical features of flow to improve the analysis accuracy. In this paper, we recognize these problems by analyzing the ground-truth traffic and propose the solution of these problems. The four problems considered in this paper are the distance measurement of features, the selection of the representative value of features, the abnormal behavior of TCP sessions, and the weight assignment to the feature. The proposed solutions were verified by showing the performance improvement through experiments in campus network.

  • The oxidation of NiAl(110) was investigated in the temperature regime between 300K and 1300 K using LEED (low energy electron diffraction), TPD (temperature programmed desorption) and HREELS (high resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy). The adsorption of N2O and O2 up to reconstructions. Stepwise annealing of the oxygen-saturated sample from 600 K to 1300K in UHV (ultra-high vacuum,) results in firstly the onset of randomly oriented then finally fairly well-ordered. 5 ${\AA}$ Al2O3 film with quasi-hexagonal periodicity. Ordered thicker oxide films of 18-30 ${\AA}$ seem to be grown on this interfacial oxide layer by direct oxidation of sample at elevated temperature between 1150 and 1300 K because of the LEED pattern consisting of new broad hexagonal spots and the previous 5 ${\AA}$ spots. Although the periodicity of surface oxygen arrays shows no significant change from an hexagonal close-packing, the O-O distance changes from ∼3.0 ${\AA}$ film to ∼2.9 ${\AA}$ for thicker oxides. with the appearance of Auger parameter, for the 5${\AA}$ film can be described better as an interfacial oxide layer. The observation of three symmetric phonon peaks can be also a supporting evidence for this phase assignment since thicker oxide films on the Same Ni2Al3(110) show somewhat different phonon structure much closer to that of the ${\gamma}$-Al2O3. The adsorption/desorption of methanol further proves the preparation of less-defective and/or oxygen-terminated Al2O3 films showing ordered phase transitions with the change of oxide thickness between 5 ${\AA}$ to 30 ${\AA}$.

  • The purpose of this study is to characterize canine mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) derived from bone marrow (BM) for use in research on the applications of stem cells in canine models of development, physiology, and disease. BM was harvested antemortem by aspiration from the greater tubercle of the humerus of 30 normal beagle dogs. Canine BM-derived MSCs were isolated according to methods developed for other species and were characterized based on their morphology, growth traits, cell-surface antigen profiles, differentiation repertoire, immunocytochemistry results, and neurotrophic factor expression in vitro. The canine MSCs exhibited a fibroblast-like morphology with a polygonal or spindle-shaped appearance and long processes; further, their cell-surface antigen profiles were similar to those of their counterparts in other species such as rodents and humans. The canine MSCs could differentiate into osteocytes and neurons on incubation with appropriate induction media. RT-PCR analysis revealed that these cells expressed NGF, bFGF, SDF-1, and VEGF. This study demonstrated that isolating canine MSCs from BM, stem-cell technology can be applied to a large variety of organ dysfunctions caused by degenerative diseases and injuries in dogs. Furthermore, our results indicated that canine MSCs constitutively secrete endogenous factors that enhance neurogenesis and angiogenesis. Therefore, these cells are potentially useful for treating dogs affected with various neurodegenerative diseases and spinal-cord injuries.

  • This study investigated the incidence rate of umbilical hernia (UH) in pig farms and examined the effect of using them as breeding pigs on reproductive traits. The occurrence of UH ranged from 0.1% to 3.0% in pig farms investigated. UH pigs were found in almost all farms except for a single farm in Jeju Island. Spontaneously occurring UH pigs were selected and used for cross breeding tests. UH-related crosses and their progeny showed significant (P < 0.05) differences in gestation period, the numbers of piglets born and alive, and body weights at birth and $21^{st}$ day comparing to those of the control population. UH-related crosses showed longer gestation period, reduced numbers of piglets, and lighter body weights than those from the control population. Interestingly, reduced number of piglets was about one fourth, suggesting that UH inheritance might play a critical role as a lethal gene during embryogenesis. In addition, UH incidence rate in UH-related crosses was significantly (P < 0.05) higher than that in the control except for UH-cross3. However, in the progeny of control cross, a pig also had UH appearance, indicating that porcine UH might be inherited in recessive inheritance mode. Taken together, the results of this study indicate that UH is one of recessively inherited genetic defect that occurs at ordinary times in pig farms, suggesting that the use of UH animals as sire and/or dam may lead to economic losses due to increased gestation period, reduced numbers of piglets born and alive, and lower growth rates after birth of pigs.

  • Background: The current regulations regarding the storage of medicinal herbs do not define the storage temperature; instead, but the only requirement is that the plastic bags used for storing the medicinal herbs should be tightly sealed during storage. The practice of storing medicinal herbs at room temperature ($28^{\circ}C$), causes many problems, including growth of insect pests on the stored medicinal herbs. Thus, it is necessary to understand the effect of insect pests on the quality of medicinal herbs stored at room temperature ($28^{\circ}C$) for the improving the relevant regulations. Methods and Results: Cnidium rhizome and Angelica radix were infested with Lasioderma serricorne F. adults and incubated at $28^{\circ}C$ for 2.5 and 5 months. The population of L. serricorne was established rapidly, and left many holes, cadavers, and feces on the stored medicinal herbs, thereby greatly damaging the product appearance and hygiene. In addition, active ingredients of the medicinal herbs were significantly decreased, probably reducing their medicinal quality as well. Conclusions: These results indicate that the current regulations are not sufficient to prevent the establishment of storage insect pests and guarantee the quality and hygiene of stored medicinal herbs. Therefore, it is necessary to devise proper storage protocols and upgrade the current relevant regulations to maintain the quality of medicinal herbs during storage.

  • It has been suggested that defective interfering (DI) RNA contributes to the persistence of Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV). In this study, we characterized molecular and biological aspects of the DI RNA and its relation to viral persistence. We identified a homologous DI virus intimately associated with JEV persistence in Vero cells. The production of DI RNA during undiluted serial passages of JEV coincided with the appearance of cells refractory to acute infection with JEV. We also established a Vero cell clone with a persistent JEV infection in which the DI RNA coreplicated efficiently at the expense of helper virus. The infectious virus yield of the clone fluctuated during its growth depending upon the amount of DI RNA accumulated in the previous replication cycle. Identification of the corresponding negative-sense RNA of the DI RNA indicated that the DI RNA functioned as a replication unit. Most of the DI RNA molecules retained their open reading frames despite a large deletion, encompassing most of the prM, the entire E, and the 5' half of the NS1 gene. Taken together, these observations suggest that the generation of homologous DI RNA during successive JEV acute infections in Vero cells probably participates actively in persistent JEV infection.

  • Meat provides high quality proteins, lipids, minerals and vitamins. The meat protein is especially high in essential amino acids that are crucial for human health, growth & development and for the formation of enzymes, hormones and antibodies. Relatively cheap and nutritionally sound vegetable proteins that are similar to animal proteins are being developed to replace the animal proteins in texture, nutrition and food characteristics. In this study a nutritionally sound meat lipid replacing food Oatrim that has been produced by converting oat starch into maltodextrin by ${\alpha}$-amylase, have been partially substituted for beef and general component analysis, texture measurement and sensory tests have been conducted. The results are 1. Water content of the non-treated (0% treated) was 67.1% and the treated (10% treated) was 77%. The treated showed better water holding capacity. 2. Protein content of the non-treated was 21.2 g/100 g; the 4% treated, 18.4 g/100 g; the 6% treated, 18.2 g/100 g; the 8% treated, 17.2 g/100g; and the 10% treated, 16.0 g/100 g. The protein content tended significant. 3. Amino acid analysis results showed that glutamic acid content was the highest in Oatrim and as its amino acid make up is exellent, it is valuable as a fine low fat protein food. 4. Sensory tests show that the increased Oatrim content increased the appearance quality but food characteristics were high only in the 4% and 6% treated groups, indicating that the replacement ratio should not exceed 10%. 5. Texture measurement analysis results show that the higher the replacement content, lower the springness, cohesiveness, hardness, chewiness and gumminess, resulting in relatively soft overall texture. However, in order to better the food characteristics, more studies must be continuously done, and so by being able to increase vegetable substitution over meat, it may be able to contribute to the prevention of adult disease.
