The oblong rockfish, Sebastes oblongus has recently drawn attention from aquaculturists because of its marketable value and tolerance against winter water temperature in the southern coastal waters of the Korean peninsula. In the study of temperature effect on growth, water temperature $16^{\circ}C$ showed best growth. The upper temperature of the fish showed feeding activity was $27^{\circ}C$ over which the fish showed no longer feeding activity. Stocking density was also a critical factor affecting the growth and survival of the juvenile fish. The best growth was in the density of 200 juveniles/L, while the highest survival was in the density of 100 juveniles/L. A feeding experiment was conducted to determine the effects of feeding frequency on growth and survival. A feeding scheme of twice a day was good enough in the sense of growth, survival, and economy. These results indicate that parameters such as water temperature, density, tank size and feeding frequency are consideration for best seed production of the fish.
In order to study the growth and survival of enteric pathogens causing water-borne infections in sewage, the filter-sterilized and autoclaved sewages of Dae Gu City were inoculated with Salmonella typhimuriuim, Shigella flexneri 2a, Sh. sonnei I, Vibrio eltor and V. parahaemolyticus, as test series and Escherichia coli as control. After varying periods of incubation up to 15 days at $4^{\circ}$, $15^{\circ}$, $25^{\circ}$ and $37^{\circ}C$, viable cells in the inoculated sewages were counted by colony count technique. Distilled water and 0.9% saline were subjected to inoculation of the organisms was observed in the filter-sterilized and autoclaved sewages at $4^{\circ}$ and the sewages became sterile within a few days. At $15^{\circ}$, no growth and rapid inactivation of the organisms in the filter-sterilized sewage and slight or no growth in the autoclaved sewage was noted. Some viable cells were found in the autoclaved sewage after 15 days. A considerable growth was observed in the filter-sterilized and autoclayed sewages, at $25^{\circ}$ and $37^{\circ}$, and large numbers of viable cells were found even after 15days of incubation. In general, the autoclaved sewage supproted the growth more noticeably than the filter-sterilized, except for V.parahaemolyticus which grew well in filter-sterilized sewage. No marked difference was noted between incubations at $25^{\circ}$ and $37^{\circ}$, but V. parahaemolyticus showed a slightly more active growth at $25^{\circ}$ than at $37^{\circ}$. Distilled water inactivated the organisms within a few days, but saline supported the growth at $25^{\circ}$ and $37^{\circ}$. Marked differences were noted in the survival test of sewages pathogens of different origins.

Background Administration of growth factors has been associated with increased viability of composite grafts greater than 1-cm in diameter. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) contains many of the growth factors studied. In this study, we evaluate the effect of PRP injection on composite graft viability and the proper time for injection. Methods A total of 24 New Zealand White rabbits were divided into four groups. Autologous PRP was injected into the recipient sites three days before grafting in group 1, on the day of grafting in group 2, and three days after grafting in group 3. Group 4 served as control without PRP administration. Auricular composite grafts of 3-cm diameter were harvested and grafted back into place after being rotated 180 degrees. Median graft viability and microvessel density were evaluated at day 21 of graft via macroscopic photographs and immunofluorescent staining, respectively. Results The median graft survival rate was 97.8% in group 1, 69.2% in group 2, 55.7% in group 3, and 40.8% in the control group. The median vessel counts were 34 (per ${\times}200$ HPF) in group 1, 24.5 in group 2, 19.5 in group 3, and 10.5 in the control group. Conclusions This study demonstrates that PRP administration is associated with increased composite graft viability. All experimental groups showed a significantly higher survival rate and microvessel density, compared with the control group. Pre-administration of PRP was followed by the highest graft survival rate and revascularization. PRP treatments are minimally invasive, fast, easily applicable, and inexpensive, and offer a potential clinical pathway to larger composite grafts.

Rockfish (Sebastes schlegeli) juveniles were fed with the diets containing 0 (control and sham), 5, 10 and 15 ppm of 3,5,3'-triiodo-L-thyronine ($T_3$) for 50 days to assess the effect of the hormone on the change of physiological condition, growth and survival rate, fish were fed the commercial diet by hand to satiation 2 times per day. After 50 days, food intake, feed efficiency, thyroid cell height (TCH), abnormality, proximate body composition, growth, condition factor and survival rate were also examined. The food intake and the feed efficiency of S. schlegeli fed with diet containing 10 ppm of $T_3$ was significantly higher than those of fishes fed with the other diets. On the final day of experiment, atrophy of thyroid gland was observed in fish administered with 10 and 15 ppm of $T_3$. $T_3$increased slightly the abnormality according to the increase of $T_3$dose. The whole body proximate analyses indicated that the fishes administrated with 15 ppm of $T_3$ were the highest in protein content and were the lowest in lipid, but in ash content were there a significant effects of $T_3$. The growth of S. schlegeli fed with a diet containing 10 ppm of $T_3$ was significantly higher than that of control. The condition factor was not related to administered $T_3$ content. $T_3$ slightly improved the survival rate of juvenile S. schlegeli, and the survival rate of fish administered with 10 ppm was significantly higher than that of sham-control but was lower than that of control.

Cripto is a small glycosylphosphatidylinositol-anchored signaling protein that can detach from the anchored membrane and stimulate proliferation, migration, differentiation, vascularization, and angiogenesis. In the present study, we demonstrated that Cripto positively affected proliferation and survival of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) without affecting multipotency. Cripto also increased expression of phosphorylated janus kinase 2 (p-JAK2), phosphorylated signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (p-STAT3), 78 kDa glucose-regulated protein (GRP78), c-Myc, and cyclin D1. Notably, treatment with an anti-GRP78 antibody blocked these effects. In addition, pretreatment with STAT3 short interfering RNA (siRNA) inhibited the increase in p-JAK2, c-Myc, cyclin D1, and BCL3 levels caused by Cripto and attenuated the pro-survival action of Cripto on MSCs. We also found that incubation with Cripto protected MSCs from apoptosis caused by hypoxia or $H_2O_2$ exposure, and the level of caspase-3 decreased by the Cripto-induced expression of B-cell lymphoma 3-encoded protein (BCL3). These effects were sensitive to down-regulation of BCL3 expression by BCL3 siRNA. Finally, we showed that Cripto enhanced expression levels of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), fibroblast growth factor (FGF), and hepatocyte growth factor (HGF). In summary, our results demonstrated that Cripto activated a novel biochemical cascade that potentiated MSC proliferation and survival. This cascade relied on phosphorylation of JAK2 and STAT3 and was regulated by GRP78. Our findings may facilitate clinical applications of MSCs, as these cells may benefit from positive effects of Cripto on their survival and biological properties.
This study was conducted to investigate the effects of different water temperatures on growth, survival, biochemical composition, and blood physiological parameters of juvenile mandarin fish Siniperca scherzeri. Feed-trained juvenile fish were subjected to four water temperatures (20, 23, 26 and 29℃) with two replicate groups. The fish were fed to apparent satiation twice daily using a formulated diet containing 55% crude protein and 6% crude lipid. After the 8-week feeding trial, survival was >96% in all groups. Weight gain and feed efficiency of fish reared at 26 and 29℃ were higher than those reared at 20℃. The protein efficiency ratio, daily feed intake, and whole body proximate composition were not affected by water temperature. These results indicate that a suitable water temperature range for optimal growth and feed efficiency of juvenile mandarin fish is 26-29℃ under these experimental conditions.
Background and Aims: Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is a potential prognostic biomarker for patients with resected gastric cancer. However, its role remains controversial. The objective of this study was to conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis of published literature. Methods: Relevant literature was identified using Medline and survival data from published studies were collected following a methodological assessment. Quality assessment of eligible studies and meta-analysis of hazard ratio (HR) were performed to review the correlation of VEGF overexpression with survival and recurrence in patients with gastric cancer. Results: Our meta-analysis included 44 published studies with 4,794 resected patients. VEGF subtype for the prediction of overall survival (OS) included tissue VEGF (HR=2.13, 95% CI 1.71-2.65), circulating VEGF (HR=4.22, 95% CI 2.47-7.18), tissue VEGF-C (HR=2.21, 95% CI 1.58-3.09), tissue VEGF-D (HR=1.73, 95% CI 1.25-2.40). Subgroup analysis showed that HRs of tissue VEGF for OS were, 1.78 (95% CI 0.90-3.51) and 2.31 (95% CI 1.82-2.93) in non-Asians and Asians, respectively. The meta-analysis was also conducted for disease free survival (DFS) and disease specific survival (DSS). Conclusion: Positive expression of tissue VEGF, circulating VEGF, VEGF-C and VEGF-D were all associated with poor prognosis in resected gastric cancer. However, VEGF demonstrated no significant prognostic value for non-Asian populations. Circulating VEGF may be better than tissue VEGF in predicting prognosis.
The present study investigated survival and growth of the abalone, Haliotis discus hannai and sea cucumber, Stichopus japonicus co-cultured and supplied with abalone formula feed (AFF) and dry sea tangle (DST) in indoor tank. During the experimental period from April 20 to July 15 in 2011, we used abalone with shell length of $28.54{\pm}1.23mm$ and total weight of $2.92{\pm}0.26g$. The sea cucumber used in the experiment weighed $3.0{\pm}0.2g$ in wet weight. For the experiment, 3 types of feeds including AFF, DST and AFF-DST mixed (1:1) group were supplied to abalone and sea cucumber. During the experiment, survival of abalone reached over 97.0% and 87.0% for sea cucumber in three experimental tanks. Survival of the abalone was found to be higher in DST group, while it was lower among sea cucumber, although the survival was not significantly different among three experimental group. Growth of abalone fed with AFF was significantly higher, while the growth rate of sea cucumber was highest in the tank fed with AFF+DST mixed diet (P < 0.05).

One-year-old rooted cuttings of ten poplar clones and one willow clone were planted in a riparian area in Osan. Survival rate, growth performance, biomass, vitality, defoliation, leaf damages by diseases and/or insects and stem borer damage of the poplar and willow clones have been investigated for three growing seasons. Average survival rate of all eleven clones was declined from 80.7% for the first year to 60.7% for the third year. At three years after planting, poplar clones Dorskamp, ST-148 and Eco-28 showed the best survival rate of 80%. For height and DBH growth, the poplar clone Ay-48 and the willow clone 131-25 were the highest 8.3m and 9.5cm, respectively. However, poplar clones 72-30 and 72-31 were lower than those of the other clones. Clones Ay-48 and 131-25 seemed to have strong vitality when compare to the other clones. No serious damages by diseases and insects were found in most clones. Clones Ay-48 and ST-148 were the most tolerant to various diseases and insects. Clone Ay-48 produced the largest biomass for individual and annual total biomass, 22.5kg and 18.7ton $ha^{-1}$, respectively. Clone Dorskamp showed the best adaptability, which was estimated with survival rate, biomass and damages by various diseases and insects in the riparian area and followed by clones Ay-48, 97-19 and Eco-28. As a consequence, the four clones seemed to be the best candidate poplar clones for the establishment of riparian woody buffer.
This study was performed to investigate the effects of water temperature and stocking density and rotifer density on the mass production of larval red marbled rockfish, Sebastiscus tertius. Total length of the marbled rockfish larva grown in $23^{\circ}C$ of water temperature were 10.80mm, which was the best, while those grown in $29^{\circ}C$ of water temperature were 6.28mm, which was the lowest. The survival rates of red marbled rockfish larvae grown in $20^{\circ}C$ and $23^{\circ}C$ were 24.0% and 18.5%, respectively. However, the survival rate of red marbled rockfish larvae grown in $26^{\circ}C$ was $7^{\circ}C$ and no larvae survived in $29^{\circ}C$. The total length of red marvled rockfish larva stocked at the density of 5 and 10 larvaper liter of water were high, which were 11.52 mm and 11.22 mm, respectively, but those stocked at the density of 30 larva per liter of water were 7.55mm, which was the lowest. The survival rate of red marbled rockfish larva stocked at the density of 2.5 larva per liter of water was 52.0%, which was the best, but the lowest, 18.0% for the red marbled rockfish larva stocked at the density of 30 larva per liter. There was a trend toward decrease in survival rate of red marbled rockfish larva as their stocking density increased. The survival rates of red marbled rockfish larva fed rotifers at the density of 10 and 5 individuals per ml were high, 48.5% and 48.0%, and their total lengths were 11.92 and 11.89mm, respectively, which grew relatively fast. The survival rate and the total length of red marbled rockfish larva fed rotifers at the density of 30 individuals per ml were the lowest, which were 8.40mm and 21.5%, respectively. Also, red marbled rockfish larva fed rotifers at the density of more than 20 individuals per ml achieved poor survival and growth. These results indicated that the proper conditions for the mass production of larval red marbled rockfish were $23^{\circ}C$ of water temperature, fish larva stocking density of 5 to 10 larva per liter of water and rotifers density of 5 to 10 individuals per ml as live feed.
