  • The present study conducted a stem analysis to trace growth information of Japanese larch (Larix kaempferi) and predict the future changes in growth volume. For this purpose, six L. kaempferi trees over 47 years old were cut at 1-2 m intervals from a height of 0.2 m, and circular plates of 5 cm thickness were collected for stem analysis. The analysis indicated that approximately 1-8 years are required to grow up to chest height. The annual height and diameter growth increased rapidly until the trees are 15 years old and gradually decreased after 20 years. The volume of 30-year-old trees in Oegam-ri forests, which were well-managed after artificial reforestation, was 0.4837 m3, whereas that in unmanaged Singi-ri forests was 0.1956 m3. Although the volume of individual trees differed greatly depending on the forest management status, it was found that the volume increased by 1.67-1.76, 2.49, and 3.49 times at 40, 50, and 60 years age, respectively, compared to the legal harvesting age 30. Therefore, factors such as the carbon dioxide reduction effect, forest management benefits, and the condition of trees at the site should be considered before harvesting trees.

  • The carbide growth behavior of MAR-M247 LC alloy was investigated by directional solidification and quench method. The carbide volume fraction, trapping and growth behavior were correlated with the growth rate. It was found that the carbide volume fraction decreases at slower growth rate. This decreasing was caused by lower solid-liquid interface trapping ability at the slower growth rate.

  • To understand growth characteristics of eight dominant red tide species ($Prorocentrum$ $minimum$, $Heterocapsa$ $triquetra$, $Scrippsiella$ $trochoidea$, $Akashiwo$ $sanguinea$, $Chattonella$ $marina$, $Heterosigma$ $akashiwo$, $Amphidinium$ $carterae$ and $Rhodomonas$ $salina$) in the Korean coastal water, the growth rates were examined in relation with the impacts of water temperature and bio-volume. Of these, $P.$ $minimum$, $C.$ $marina$, $H.$ $akashiwo$, $A.$ $carterae$ and $R.$ $salina$ were eurythermal species with relatively high growth rates in a borad ranges (15 to $25^{\circ}C$) of water temperature. On the other hand, the growth rate of $H.$ $triquetra$, $S.$ $trochoidea$ and $A.$ $sanguinea$ were high in relatively mid temperature (optimum: $25^{\circ}C$) condition. In particular, $H.$ $triquetra$ was well adapted in low temperature of 5 to $15^{\circ}C$, implying that the species can survive and grows even at very low temperature. Based on results of our experiment, the growth characterestics of five eurythermal species and three mid temperature species may have dominated in Korean coastal water during summer season and fall season, respectively. Contrastively, the growth characteristics of $H.$ $triquetra$ make a consistently dominant during the cold winter season. In addition, the growth rates of large bio-volume species were lower than those of small bio-volume species, indicates that growth of single cells of several flagellates might be depended on the cells sizes.

  • Ductile fracture of dual phase steel begins with void nucleation, at martensite-ferrite interface of deformed martensite particle. In this study, void nucleation, growth, and coalescence under various strain were studied in dual phase steel. Therefore, by means of the heat treatment of low carbon steel, the study deals with void nucleation and growth for ferrite grain size and martensite volume fraction of dual phase steel using statistical method. Void nucleation and growth with increasing strain are shown depend upon the ferrite grain size. Voids volume fraction generally increase as ferrite grain size decease.

  • The Diameter at Breast Height (DBH) provides information about the volume growth of a tree. In this study, we estimated the relative growth rates of Castanea crenata and Pinus rigida as 4.07% and 3.73%, respectively. Although the difference was low, we demonstrated that the growth rate of C. crenata is slightly faster than that of P. rigida. After calculating the relative growth rate for each section, we found that the relative growth of C. crenata decreased with time. However, the relative growth rate of P. rigida showed an overall increase. The gap widths of both species showed an increasing trend. However, the gradient of the two species was different. The gradient of C. crenata was approximately 12.0, but that of P. rigida was approximately 4.7. This means that the volume growth of C. crenata was faster than that of P. rigida during 4 years. However, this was relatively a short period for measuring the volume growth pattern, and we believe that additional useful information can be obtained by conducting long-term ecological monitoring. Results of canonical correspondence analysis showed that among the climate variables, temperature was significantly related to the gap widths for both species.

  • Changes in water quality and algal growth according to the differences in the inflow volume were investigated in the Daecheong Lake from 1998 to 2001. Until year 2000, inflow volume considerably depended on the rainfall throughout the basin. However, the correlation was low since 2001 when water storage in the upstream Yongdam Lake was started. According to inflow volume-TP relationship analyses, significant correlation was found at up- and middle-stream sites, excluding down-stream site of the Daechong Lake. For chlorophyll-a, correlation was found with flow volume at all sites except for Choo-So. In a dry year, although nutrients loads were relatively lower than those in rainy years, there were higher concentrations of chlorophyll-a and massive bloom of Microcystis. Limiting factors for algal growth seems to be not the volume of nutrients load but retention time and physical disturbance of the water body influenced by inflow volume. Thus, in the Daecheong lake, it would be more important to focus on the management of eutrophication in dry years than in rainy ones.

  • Sella turcica contains pituitary gland that has influence on craniofacial growth. So, if the volume of sella turcica correlate to the function of Pituitary gland, we can assume that the volume of sella turcica in skeletal Class III patients has some difference to that of normal occlusion group. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the difference of shape and volume of sella turcica between normal occlusion group and Class III patients. The shape of sella turcica was Classified by Inaba method and the volume of sella turcica was measured in lateral and P-A cephalograms by Di Chiro method. To find out the possibility of the volume of sella turcica as diagnostic aid to predict Class III growth pattern, the correlation coefficients between the volume of sella and cephalometric variables were calculated. The results were as follows. 1. The volume of sella turcica in Class III patients is larger than that of normal occlusion groups 2. The volume of sella turcica in female was larger than that of male in Class III patients 3. The volume of sella turcica has close correlation with APDI, ANB, SNA, SNB, ODI, gonial angle, post. cranial base length 4. Sella Index (volume of sella / ant. cranial base length) can be a more accurate indicator that represent Class III growth pattern than volume of sella itself. 5. The morphologic pattern of sella turcica had no significant difference between two groups.

  • This study was to estimate total annual volume growth by the measurement of mean tree growth during the last 10 years. Surveyed Forest stand was the second block (20.80 ha.)of Kyung Hee University Forests located at San 58 and 64, Gaegok-Ri, Gapyung-Yeup, Gapyung-Goon, Kyunggi province in Korea. The stand was mainly composed of uneven-aged Pinus densiflora and the estimation of tree volume was conducted by taking the cores at the D.B.H. of the sample tree which was selected by sub-sampling. The results obtained were as follows; 1) The regression between the diameter (D) and diameter growth ($\hat{I}$) was $\hat{I}=0.5499+0.0101D$. 2) The estimated equation of confidence interval for the diameter growth was $S^2{\hat{I}}=0.00817(0.09538-0.00952D+0.00027D^2$) 3) The equation for estimating tree height (H) from diameter was $H=1.32376D^{0.77958}$ 4) The equation for estimating tree volume from diameter and height $V=0.0000622D^{1.6918}H^{1.1397}$ 5) Total annual tree volume growth was $5.4041m^3/ha$, and ranged from 5.6131 to $5.1984m^3/ha$. 6) Annual growth rate of total tree volume and its error were 8.8% and 3.9%, respectively. The annual volume growth per tree for any districts can be estimated by this method, and the annual volume growth will be successfully predicted. Because of poor forest growing stock in Korea, annual amount of allowable cut should not exceed annual tree volume growth for better forest management. Accordingly, annual amount of allowable cut should be either equal to or less than annual tree volume growth for the balanced establishment between timber supply and demand in Korea. Demand shortage will be substituted with imported timber. Such plans enable Korean Government to develop a better policy of forest resources management.

  • Allometry, basal area equations, and volume equations were developed with various tree measurement variables for the major species, Quercus mongolica and Quercus variabilis, in Korean natural hardwood forests. For allometry models, the relationships between total height-DBH, crown width-DBH, height to the widest portion of the crown-total height, and height to base of crown-total height were investigated. Multiple regression methods were used to relate annual basal area growth to tree variables of initial size (DBH, total height, crown width) and relative size (relative diameter, relative height) as well as competition measures (competition index, crown class, exposed crown area, percent exposed crown area, live crown ratio). For tree volume equations, the combined-variable and Schumacher models were fitted with DBH, total height and crown width for both species.

  • In order to understand the growth percentage of red pine, author had 207 trees cut and made stem analysis on them and there by studied and analysed volume growth percentage, bark volume percentage, diameter growth percentage and the relation between diameter growth percentage and volume growth percentage and so forth. The result was as follows. 1. The volume growth percentage decreased as the age class increased and it was about 3% at the cutting age. 2. Bark volume percentage was about 5~15% and it seemed to be about constant irrespective of the age class. 3. The diameter growth percentage gradually decreased as the age class increased and it would be constant from a certain age class on. 4. As for the relation between the diameter growth percentage and volume growth percentage, the correlation ratio showed to increase with the age class increase generally the value of b was between 2.0~3.6.
