  • A large patch disease caused by Rhizoctonia solani AG2-2(IV) is a serious problem in turfgrass sites including golf courses and sports fields in Korea. The objectives of this study were to isolate some antagonistic microorganisms and to explain some involving mechanisms. Initially single colonies which were formed from the filtrates of various soil samples were obtained from LB culture and then co-cultured with R.solani AG2-2(IV) on PDA plate to explore some antagonistic microbes against for large patch fungus, Rhizoctonia solani AG2-2(IV). Out of total 82 antagonistic isolates which commonly had inhibition effect on Rhizoctonia solani AG2-2(IV) mycelial growth, one candidate (YPIN22) showed the most antifungal effect, which was confirmed by the longest distance from the edge of bacterial colony to the mycelial edge of the Rhizoctonia solani AG2-2(IV) in the dual culture. A succeeding investigation was to test any potential effect of the isolate on growth inhibition of 5 other turfgrass pathogens including R. solani solani AG2-2(IIIB), P. ultimum, C. caudatum, C. lunata, and F.oxysporum. Preliminary result indicated that the new isolate YPIN22 was also found to have antagonistic potential on the growth inhibition of those turfgrass pathogenic fungi, which was explained by inhibition zones ranging from 8 to 22mm. A further explanation of some characteristics of the isolate YPIN22 will be discussed in detail.

  • In a borate buffer solution, the growth kinetics and the electronic properties of passive film on nickel were investigated, using the potentiodynamic method, chronoamperometry, and single- or multi-frequency electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The oxide film formed during the passivation process of nickel has showed the electronic properties of p-type semiconductor, which follow from the Mott-Schottky equation. It was found out that the passive film ($Ni(OH)_2$) of Ni formed in the low electrode potential changes to NiO and NiO(OH) while the electrode potential increases.

  • Over the past 30 years, Korea experienced demographic transition which typically substitutes quality(education) for quantity(number) of population. This paper decomposed labor supply into quantity and quality aspects and estimated the respective employment elasticities of economic growth in the past. Then, based on the assumptions about the future population (by age, sex and education) and labor force participation rates, the future labor supply(both quantity and quality) is projected and growth potential of the Korean economy is evaluated. The result shows that labor supply in Korea is relying gradually more on the qualitative rather than the quantitative aspect but since the increase in the former will not fully compensate the decrease in the latter, the potential growth rate of the Korean economy will be substantially reduced in the futrue.

  • Common thistle contains water-soluble substances that are phytotoxic to neighboring plant species. A series of aqueous extracts from leaves, stems, roots and flowers of common thistle (Cirsium pendulum Fisch.) were assayed against alfalfa (Medicago sativa) seedlings to determine their allelopathy, and the results showed highest inhibition in the extracts from flowers and leaves, and followed by stems, and roots. The extracts at 40 g dry tissue $L^{-1}(g\;L^{-1})$ applied on filter paper in a Petri-dish significantly inhibited root growth of test plant by 87%. Methanol extracts at 100 g $L^{-1}$ from leaves inhibited root growth of alfalfa and barnyardgrass (Echinochloa crus-galli) by 89 and 98%, respectively. Hexane and ethylacetate fractions of common thistle reduced alfalfa root growth more than did butanol and water fractions. Incorporation into soil with the leaf residues at $100g\;kg^{-1}$ inhibited shoot fresh weights of barnyardgrass and eclipta (Eclipta prostrate) by 88 and 58%, respectively, showing higher sensitivity in grass species. These results suggest that common thistle plants had allelopathic potential for eco-friendly vegetation management, and that especially their activities were differently exhibited depending on plant part.

  • Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) at C-band is an ideal remote sensing system for crop monitoring owing to its short wavelength, which interacts with the upper parts of the crop canopy. This study evaluated the potential of dual polarimetric Sentinel-1 at C-band for monitoring rice phenology. Rice phenological variations occur in a short period. Hence, the short revisit time of Sentinel-1 SAR system can facilitate the tracking of short-term temporal morphological variations in rice crop growth. The sensitivity of SAR backscattering coefficients, backscattering ratio, and polarimetric decomposition parameters on rice phenological stages were investigated through a time-series analysis of 33 Sentinel-1 Single Look Complex images collected from 10th April to 25th October 2020 in Gimhae, South Korea. Based on the observed temporal variations in SAR parameters, we could identify and distinguish the phenological stages of the Gimhae rice growth cycle. The backscattering coefficient in VH polarisation and polarimetric decomposition parameters showed high sensitivity to rice growth. However, amongst SAR parameters estimated in this study, the VH backscattering coefficient realistically identifies all phenological stages, and its temporal variation patterns are preserved in both Sentinel-1A (S1A) and Sentinel-1B (S1B). Polarimetric decomposition parameters exhibited some offsets in successive acquisitions from S1A and S1B. Further studies with data collected from various incidence angles are crucial to determine the impact of different incidence angles on polarimetric decomposition parameters in rice paddy fields.

  • Hair loss causes psychological stress due to its effect on appearance. Therefore, the global market for hair loss treatment products is rapidly growing. The present study demonstrated that ginseng berry-derived and sequence-modified peptides promoted the proliferation rate of dermal papilla (DP) cells and keratinocytes, in addition to having antioxidant properties. Moreover, the potential role of these ginseng berry peptides as TGF-β2 antagonists was confirmed through in silico computer docking. In addition to promoting the growth of ,the ginseng berry-derived peptides also promoted the proliferation of keratinocytes experimental Particularly, an unmodified ginseng berry-derived peptide (GB-1) and two peptides with sequence modifications (GB-2 and GB-3) decreased ROS generation and exhibited a protective effect on damaged HaCaT keratinocytes. Computer-aided peptide discovery was conducted to identify the potential interactions of important proteins with transforming growth factor-beta 2 (TGF-β2), a key protein that plays a crucial role in the human hair growth cycle. Our results demonstrated that MAGH, an amino acid sequence present in herbal supplements and plant-based natural compounds, can inhibit TGF-β2.

  • Korean construction industry made a huge growth over several decades. However, domestic construction market has shrunk in recent years due to the domestic political environments and global economic crisis. Today, the international construction markets become more important to be investigated, and demands for international construction study have risen. The purpose of this study is to search for measures to compare the potential of Southeast Asian countries' construction markets and select strategic target countries where the Korean construction companies pursue to explore for future investments. The research team investigated a range of selection factors which can represent the construction market condition of each country. These factors included the size of the construction industry, economic growth potential, current relationship with Korea, the level of infrastructure development, political situation, etc. After collecting data, each selection factor was scored by experts' analyses and the total score was given to each country. As a result, the rating identified attractive countries for future investments: Myanmar, Vietnam, and Sri Lanka. For the target countries, analytical methods were used for in-depth market analysis that can provide comprehensive insight and strategic clue for development of short-/mid-/long-term roadmap and action plans. The research findings would be used to support rational decision making of construction investment advancing to the Southeast Asian economic growth.

  • There has been a surge of interest in private equity as an alternative corporate restructuring scheme to complement the current institutional forms such as workouts and court receivership. By empirically examining whether private equity in Korea can improve investee companies, we find that while private equity in Korea did not sacrifice the long-term growth potential of investee firms, it did not improve their profitability (e.g. ROA, ROE, and ROS) or growth (e.g. sales growth) either. Both the negative correlation between business performance and firm age and our empirical results showing that young firms were favored by private equity for investment imply that Korean private equity may perform as growth capital, similar to venture capital rather than as buyouts for corporate restructuring.

  • The purpose of this research was to investigate the effects of nondigestible oligosaccharides (NDO) from red ginseng marc on the growth of Bifidobacterium spp. Red ginseng marc, a fibrous byproduct of ginseng extract from processing, was destarched by ${\alpha}$-amylase and amyloglucosidase treatment, and then treated with a commercial pectinase to produce NDO. The bifidogenic effects of NDO on B. adolescentis, B. animalis, B. breve, and B. longum were investigated in vitro. NDO significantly promoted the growth of Bifidobacterium spp. The growth, decrease of pH, and organic acid formation (acetate, lactate, formate) were markedly different among the species. B. adolescentis showed the best growth and produced the greatest amount of organic acids. When NDO was used as a carbon source in the cocultivation of Bifidobacterium spp. and Clostridium perfringens, the growth of Bifidobacterium spp. was not influenced by the existence of Cl. perfringens. The result strongly suggested that NDO from red ginseng marc could be used as a potential bifidogenic source.

  • Mode interactions at Unstable fluid interfaces induced by a shock wave (Richtmyer-Meshkov Instability) are studied both analytically and numerically. The analytical approach is based on a potential flow model with source singularities in incompressible fluids of infinite density ratio. The potential flow model shows that a single bubble has a decaying growth rates at late time and an asymptotic constant radius. Bubble interactions, bubbles of different radii propagates with different velocities and the leading bubbles grow in size at the expense of their neighboring bubbles, are predicted by the potential flow model. This phenomenon is validated by full numerical simulations of the Richtmyer-Meshkov instability in compressible fluids for initial multi-frequency perturbations on the unstable interface.
