A LONGITUDINAL ROENTGENO-CEPHALOMETRIC STUDY ON THE CRANIOFACIAL DEPTH AND HEIGHT BY COBEN'S METHOD (Coben법에 의한 한국 아동의 두개안면골의 성장 변화에 관한 누년적 연구)

  • The morphology and growth changes of the Craniofacial Complex are important in orthodontics and cephalometrics for analysis and evaluation of facial bone growth are widely used. The author analyzed the data using lateral cephalometric roentgenogram of 75 Korean male and 50 Korean females age of 6 to 10 with normal occlusion to provide informations-relative rates of facial bone growth of Korean which is to be contributed in Korean standard. The results were as follows: 1. Means, standard deviation and coefficient of variation of Korean children were obtained. 2. The item which showed significent difference between male and female was craniofacial height in absolute dimension. 9. No difference of sex was showed in increment of craniofacial height and depth. 4. Among the craniofacial depth increments, the lower facial depth dimension increased most, midfacial depth dimension increased less, and cranial depth dimension increased the least. 5. The horizontal body of mandible showed rapid growing tendency more than did the ascending ramus.

  • A numerical study was performed on the fluid flow in the melt of the cold model for Czochralski growth system. The fluid flow in the melt of Woods metal with crucible diameter of 20cm was calculated using a three dimensional finite difference method. Since the crucible size is large, fully turbulent model as well as laminar model was used in the calculation. The effects of crucible rotation rate, crystal rotation rate and wall temperature difference on the velocity and temperature distribution were also investigated. For the purpose of verifying the results of calculation, a cold model experiment using Woods metal was also conducted and the velocity distribution in the melt of the model was measured.

  • The effect of wtlitc light on unaeraten growth of Baker's yeast and the accompanying ethanol production has been studied in a batch process at 27$^{\circ}C$. Over the 80-hour period of the Champagne yeast process without pH control, the cull growth was inhibited by the fluorescent light. Another observed difference between the runs is that the drop and subsequent rise in redox potential occurred much sooner in the fermentation with light than in the fermentation without light. This preliminary study indicated that ethanol production could be enhanced by light as the cell concentration is repressed. The possible pathway, shift of the sugar substrate toward ethanol and away from cells was manifested by another difference as well. As observed under the microscope, many of the yeast cells grown under light budded without dividing by the normal fission process as they did in the dark. Furthermore, the undivided and branched (light grown) cell did not agglutinate at the end of the fermentation process as did the distinct spherical (dark grown) cells.

Introduction of Chain-Weighted Method and GDP Fluctuations

  • The Bank of Korea changed its method of GDP estimation from a fixed-weighted to a chain-weighted measure in 2009. The fixed-weighted method had had problems such as substitution bias and the rewriting of economic history. As a result of the change, annual growth rates calculated using the chain-weighted method from 1970 through 2008 turned out to be 0.8%p higher on average than the existing rates. The quarterly average chain-weighted growth rates were 0.19%p higher than the fixed-weighted ones, but they changed in the same directions. In this paper we analyze whether the differences in rates between the two calculation methods would bring about a difference in the cyclical characteristics of GDP. We conclude that although there were differences in growth rates after introduction of the chain-weighted method, there was no difference in the cyclical fluctuation.

Biofortification of mushroom (Pleurotus floridanus) using calcium based supplements

  • The nutritional value and yield of mushrooms depend on the substrate on which it is grown. This study sought to biofortify Pleurotus floridanus with calcium supplements and assess its effect on the yield and calcium levels. The experiment was set up in a 2 × 5 factorial and replicated thrice in a completely randomized design. Two calcium supplements, OML and OMW, were added to two growth media. The examination of total dry weight yield showed that calcium supplements OML and OMW in the sawdust medium containing wheatbran in the ratio 1:10 had a mean value of 4.37 g, which was significantly higher (P < 0.05) than that in the control (1.29 g). However, in the sawdust-only medium, there was no significant difference (p > 0.05) in the application of treatments. No significant difference (p > 0.05) was observed between the calcium types in both growth media. The mineral analysis showed that calcium levels were increased in harvested mushrooms with the addition of calcium OML and OMW to the growth media.

  • Blood is one of the most important clinical specimens for the isolation of bacteria. A rapid isolation and a high isolation rate of bacteria are very important in blood culture because bacteremic patients are mostly in grave condition. Various blood culture media which support growth of most fastidious bacteria are available commercially. However, growth of bacteria are frequently delayed because of antibacterial activity of blood. Sodium polyanethol sulfonate(Liquoid) has been reported to inactivate the antibacterial substance and disrupt phagocytic cells. The beneficial effect of SPS is well recognized in the isolation of gram-positive bacteria. However, the effect does not seem to be prominent for gram-negative bacilli isolation mainly due to the rapidity of their growth. It has been experienced with Sal. typhi that the growth is much slower than that of other gram-negative bacilli. For the rapid growth of the organism, use of bile broth has been recommended. Although Sal. typhi is the most frequently isolated organism at present, about one half of total isolates are other organisms and, in case bile broth is used, other media which support growth of these organisms should be used together. Fluid thioglycollate medium(FTM) which is always used in blood culture to isolate anaerobes is inferior to brain heart infusion(BHI) for the isolation of aerobes. This study was done to determine the effect of SPS on the isolation of Sal. typhi from blood. During the Sep. 1973 to Sep. 1974 study period, 2460 blood cultures were made from the Severance hospital patients: BHI and FTM sets 1431 specimens, BHI with SPS(0.05%) and FTM sets 396 specimens, BHI and FTM with SPS sets 359 specimens, BHI and BHI with SPS sets 274 specimens. Mean incubation time required for the macroscopic detection of growth of Sal. typhi were 3.5 days on BHI and 2.7 days on BHI with SPS. The 0.8 day difference was statistically significant. On FTM the mean incubation time was 3.8 days while it was 2.9 days on FTM with SPS. The 0.9 day difference was statistically significant. The result on BHI with and without SPS sets showed faster growth on BRI with SPS in 7 specimens and slower growth in one specimen and the remaining 12 showed growth at the same time. These specimens had mean incubation time of 3.2 days on BHI and 2.3 days on BHI with SPS. The 0.9 day difference was statistically significant. This study indicates beneficial effect of SPS for the rapid isolation of Sal. typhi from clinical blood specimens.

  • Before 1970, mandibular overgrowth was known as main cause of skeletal Class III malocclusion in growing children ; however, recent study reports that many skeletal Class III malocclusion patients also show maxillary deficiency. Since 1972, when Delaire re-accommodated Protraction Head Gear (P.H.G.), many researchers have reported that skeletal Class III discrepancies could be corrected through use of P.H.G., which induces anterior movement of maxilla and change in mandibular growth pattern into infero-posterior direction ; nevertheless, it is very difficult to predict resultant changes of orofacial region. The purpose of this study was to find out what treatment effect P.H.G. has on different study samples. Author divided 51 skeletal Class III malocclusion patients with maxillary deficiency who were treated with P.H.G. into different study groups depending on sex, treatment beginning age, intraoral appliance, and facial growth pattern. By doing so, following results were obtained. 1. Treatment beginning age and Sex Four age groups (5.8 to 8 year-old, 8 to 10 year-old, 10 to 12 year-old, 12 to 14 year-old) were compared, and no significant difference was observed. (p<0.05) There was no significant difference between the sex groups, either. (p<0.05). 2. Intraoral appliance Treatment effects of study groups that used R.P.E.(mean age of 10.2) and Labio-Lingual appliance(mean age of 8.9) were compared. There was no significant difference depending on the type of intraoral appliance that was used. (p<0.05) 3. Facial growth pattern 1) Amounts of SNB and ANB corrections were smaller in clockwise growth pattern group than those in normal or counterclockwise growth pattern group. (p<0.05) 2) Amounts of increase in Wits appraisal and mandibular plane angle were greater in counterclockwise growth pattern group than those in normal or clockwise growth pattern group. (p<0.05) 3)Amounts of increase in articular angle were greater in counter lockwise growth pattern group than those in clockwise growth pattern group. (p<0.05)

MEROMORPHIC SOLUTIONS OF SOME q-DIFFERENCE EQUATIONS

  • We consider meromorphic solutions of q-difference equations of the form $$\sum_{j=o}^{n}a_j(z)f(q^jz)=a_{n+1}(z),$$ where $a_0(z)$, ${\ldots}$, $a_{n+1}(z)$ are meromorphic functions, $a_0(z)a_n(z)$ ≢ 0 and $q{\in}\mathbb{C}$ such that 0 < |q| ${\leq}$ 1. We give a new estimate on the upper bound for the length of the gap in the power series of entire solutions for the case 0 < |q| < 1 and n = 2. Some growth estimates for meromorphic solutions are also given in the cases 0 < |q| < 1. Moreover, we investigate zeros and poles of meromorphic solutions for the case |q| = 1.

A Study of Value Evaluation for Foods among College Students (도시 대학생들의 식품에 대한 가치 평가 분석)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the value evaluation of foodstuff of 448 college students residing in the urban area. As a result of analyzing the value of each foodstuff, two to four factors were drawn from each foodstuff. The factors were classified into the social-conceptual factor, the preparatory factor, the quality factor, the economic factor, the subjective factor, and the complex factor. It was learned that the social-conceptual factor was dominant over the majority of college students in the evaluation of value of foodstuffs. There was a difference in the factor of the value evaluation for each foodstuff according to sex and the main growth region among the college students. A significant difference was found between the sexes regarding the preparatory factor and the economic factor. Also, in accordance with the main growth region, there was great difference in the social-conceptual factor(except for the Korean rice cake).

  • Exports play an important role in Korea's economy and industry. Korea's share in world trade is also increasing. Governments and trade organizations are making great efforts to promote exports. However, since SMEs lack resources of enterprises, SMEs have a lot of difficulties in increasing exports compared to large enterprises. For this reason, in this study, we analyzed the difference of perception of export difficulties according to characteristics of small and medium export companies. As a result, four factors such as overseas market information, price and cost, competitiveness and regulation of importing country were derived. In addition, we investigated the differences in recognition of export difficulties by the stage of growth of company, period of export, products exported, export department, size of company. There was a significant difference in recognition. Especially, The companies which are the early stages of growth, short export period, finished product, the smaller the size of exports companies are more difficult in export difficulties.
