  • The present study was conducted to evaluate the usefulness of four kinds of legumes(black soybean: BS, yellow soybean: YS, green peas: GP, soybean curd residue: SCR) as a high-fiber supplement in the therapeutic diet for diabetic patients. Seven groups of normal and streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats were fed isocaloric experimental diets containing 8% dietary fiber from one of legumes for 6 weeks. The effects of legumes on the gastrointestinal function and diabetic symptoms in diabetic rats were also examined and compared with the effects of cellulose or pectin diet. Legume supplementations had no significant effects on alleviating typical diabetic symptoms such as polydipsia, polyphasia, polyuria, and urinary glucose excretion when compared with cellulose or pectin supplementations. The supplementations of legumes all resulted in remarkable changes in gastrointestinal functions: shortening of GI transit time and increases in fecal volume, fecal water and crude fat contents. Legume supplementations appeared to supress the damages of the small intestine villi and the enteritis symptoms in diabetic rats. GP led to regular villus patterns closer to normal villus. BS, YS and GP led to the enlargement of cecum in diabetic rats. In conclusion, the present studies have demonstrated that legumes may possess a significant physiological actions in the control of various diabetic conditions.

  • Probiotics have been extensively studied for their beneficial effects on human health. In particular, Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium strains have gained considerable attention as major groups of probiotic bacteria that improve gastrointestinal health. However, emerging evidence suggests that probiotics offer benefits beyond those observed in the gut recent studies suggest that probiotics and/or their components exert favorable effects on alcoholic liver disease (ALD) pathogenesis such as decreasing intestinal permeability, inhibiting pathogenic bacteria growth, increasing the activity of alcohol metabolism enzymes, modulating the adaptive immune system, and suppressing fatty acid synthesis genes. In this review, we discuss the results of in vivo and in vitro studies that have examined the use of probiotics to prevent ALD, primarily focusing on those that explore the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying the activities of promising probiotic strains. The evidence presented in this review could help in screening for probiotic strains that have protective effects in ALD patients and in further elucidating the mechanisms of their actions.

  • Group of genes controls the functioning of a cell by complex interactions. These interacting gene groups are called Gene Regulatory Networks (GRNs). Two previous data mining approaches, clustering and classification have been used to analyze gene expression data. While these mining tools are useful for determining membership of genes by homology, they don't identify the regulatory relationships among genes found in the same class of molecular actions. Furthermore, we need to understand the mechanism of how genes relate and how they regulate one another. In order to detect regulatory relationships among genes from time-series Microarray data, we propose a novel approach using frequent pattern mining and chain rule. In this approach, we propose a method for transforming gene expression data to make suitable for frequent pattern mining, and detect gene expression patterns applying FP-growth algorithm. And then, we construct gene regulatory network from frequent gene patterns using chain rule. Finally, we validated our proposed method by showing that our experimental results are consistent with published results.

  • This paper is focused on management control system. From a management control perspective, strategies should be viewed as useful, but not absolutely necessary, guides to the proper design of an MCS. When strategies are formulated more clearly, more control alternatives become feasible and it becomes easier to implement each form of management control effectively. The common and important category of controls are action controls, personnel and cultural controls, and results controls. Action controls involves ensuring that employees perform(or do not perform) certain actions that are known to be beneficial(or harmful) to the organization. Personnel and cultural controls take steps to ensure that employees will control each others' behaviors. Results controls involve rewarding individuals(and sometimes groups of individuals) for generating good outcomes or punishing them for poor outcomes. The results controls of ROI-type measure cause to make managers excessively short- term oriented, or myopic. When managers' orientations to the short - term become excessive -when the management are more concerned with short-term profit than entity value-the managers are said to be myopic. We car, solve myopic problem by introducing AR(abnormal return), near-perfect indicators of value creation. The results - control ideal would be to hold all employees accountable for the wealth they individually create(or destroy) for the owners of the entities in which they work. This ideal is approachable for top management of publicly traded corporations because for these organizations, the wealth created(returns to shareholders) can be measured directly for any period(such as a year, a quarter, or a month) as the measurement period pin(or minus) the change in the market value of the stock.

  • The purpose of this study is to understand consumer needs through emotion on character T-shirts. Study results suggest the basis for planning effective designs of character T-shirts. The results were summarized as follows: Emotion factors such as complex and arousal occupied 64.0% of the total. The types of the character T-shirts were clustered as four groups. The four types showed significant differences in all emotion factors. Complex emotion indicated its highest and lowest scores in types 4 and 2, respectively; and arousal emotion in types 2 and 3, respectively. As for the relation of consumption sensibility to emotions, three consumption sensibilities were related to all eight emotional adjectives. In the demographical aspect of emotions and consumption sensibilities, significant differences were found in age, gender, job and education. Therefore, the results of this study can be used as criteria improving emotions and consumption sensibility of character T-shirts. Especially, enhanced comsumption sensibility can be expected by the elimination of texts and the use of preferred character actions and vivid warm colors.

  • This study was done to investigate the protective effects of Iljungbogan-Tang on acute hepatotoxicity of rats induced by $CCL_4$ and acetaminophen. The subject animals were divided into 3 groups : control group(administrated 0.5% carboxymethyl cellulose), sample group(30, 100, 300, 600mg/kg administrated), positive control group (administrated silymarine), Acute hepatotoxicity of rats were induced by $CCL_4$ and acetaminophen, and the serum transaminase(AST, ALT) were measured for enzyme activities. The inhibitory effects on the serum AST activities were noted in sample group(100, 300, 600mg/kg administrated) on hepatotoxicity of rats induced by $CCL_4$. The inhibitory effects on the serum AST, ALT activities were noted in sample group(30mg/kg administrated) on hepatotoxicity of rats induced by acetaminophen. The inhibitory effects on the serum AST activities were noted in sample group(600mg/kg single dose administrated) on hepatotoxicity of rats induced by acetaminophen. It is considered that Iljungbogan-Tang has protective effects against hepatotoxicity in rats induced by $CCL_4$ and acetaminophen. So it is required to study about the actions of mutual relation of medicines and patho-mechanism through experiment.

  • The present study was undertaken to explore the potential of erythropoietin in memory deficits of mice. Memory impairment was produced by scopolamine (0.5 mg/kg, $i.p.$) and intracerebroventricular streptozotocin (i.c.v STZ, 3 mg/kg, $10{\mu}l$, $1^{st}$ and $3^{rd}$ day) in separate groups of animals. Morris water-maze test was employed to assess learning and memory. The levels of brain thio-barbituric acid reactive species (TBARS) and reduced glutathione (GSH) were estimated to assess degree of oxidative stress. Brain acetylcholinesterase enzyme (AChE) activity was also measured. Scopolamine/streptozotocin administration induced significant impairment of learning and memory in mice as indicated by marked decrease in Morris water-maze performance. Scopolamine/streptozotocin administration also produced a significant enhancement of brain AChE activity and brain oxidative stress (an increase in TBARS and a decrease in GSH) levels. Treatment of erythropoietin (500 and 1,000 IU/Kg i.p.) significantly reversed scopolamine- as well as streptozotocin-induced learning and memory deficits along with attenuation of those-induced rise in brain AChE activity and brain oxidative stress levels. It may be concluded that erythropoietin exerts a beneficial effect in memory deficits of mice possibly through its multiple actions including potential anti-oxidative effect.

  • Objectives : This study was done to examine the antioxidant actions of free radicals caused by Banryong-hwan in blood.. Methods : Twelve week-old SD rats were divied into normal group, control group and HTG group. Control and HTG groups were age-induced with D-galactose, and extract of Banryong-hwan(BRH) was administerd to BRH group for six weeks. After then, blood was taken, and activities of SOD and GSH-px in erythrocytes were measured, as well as TBARS levels and concentrations of total lipid tryglyceride in plasma. Results : 1. The activities of SOD and GSH-px in erythrocytes were significantly increased in the BRH group compared with control group. 2. The concentration of total lipid was significantly decreased in the BRH group compared with control group. The values of TBARS and the concentrations of tryglyceride in plasma showed a tendency to decrease but they were not remarkable. Conclusions : Judging from the above findings, it is suggested that Banryong-hwan decrease the activities of free radical, the concentrations of lipid in plasma and generate enzyme which form lipid peroxide.
