Flow and scalar dispersion around Cheomseongdae are numerically investigated using a three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model with the renormalization group (RNG) $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence closure scheme. Cheomseongdae is an ancient astronomical observatory in Gyeongju, Korea, and is chosen as a model obstacle because of its unique shape, that is, a cylinder-shaped architectural structure with its radius varying with height. An interesting feature found is a mid-height saddle point behind Cheomseongdae. Different obstacle shapes and corresponding flow convergences help to explain the presence of the saddle point. The predicted size of recirculation zone formed behind Cheomseongdae increases with increasing ambient wind speed and decreases with increasing ambient turbulence intensity. The relative roles of inertial and eddy forces in producing cavity flow zones around an obstacle are conceptually presented. An increase in inertial force promotes flow separation. Consequently, cavity flow zones around the obstacle expand and flow reattachment occurs farther downwind. An increase in eddy force weakens flow separation by mixing momentum there. This results in the contraction of cavity flow zones and flow reattachment occurs less far downwind. An increase in ambient wind speed lowers predicted scalar concentration. An increase in ambient turbulence intensity lowers predicted maximum scalar concentration and acts to distribute scalars evenly.
Platinum group metals with high purity are important raw materials for high technology industry. Since there are no domestic ores containing PGMs, it is of importance to develop a separation process by which ultra pure PGMs can be recovered from diverse spent resources. Data on the chemical properties and dissolution behavior of PGMs were obtained from the literature. A method for the thermodynamic analysis of the HCl solution with chlorine gas was introduced. Utilizing the difference in the chemical properties and dissolution behavior of PGMs would lead to an efficient separation process to recover ultra pure PGMs.
This study was conducted to obtain granular crystalline gypsum that can be used as raw material for Plaster boards or cements from waste Plaster board. Gypsum could be Preferentially disintegrated to gypsum needle in $10\mu\textrm{m}$ or less size by hydration after the dehydration of crushed waste Plaster board. The finer the gypsum needle, it is easier to remove coarse impurities and to recover the gypsum needle. The optimum conditions for obtain the finer gypsum size were dehydration rate of 75~85%, solid concentration at hydration of 10~15%, agitation speed of 250~400 rpm, crushing size before dehydration of 2 cm or less. Gypsum of 98.21% grade was recovered with 99.0% yield as the undersize of 325 mesh wet screening followed by the dehydration-hydration process performed at the conditions of dehydration rate of 80%, solid concentration at hydration of 15%, agitation speed of 300 rpm, crushing size before dehydration of 2 cm or less. After the recrystallization of recovered gypsum, Plate-like gypsum of $151\mu\textrm{m}$ size with 99.49% grade was obtained as the oversize of 270 mesh in a wet screening.
From September 1988 to August 1992, two different methods of preparing human sperm before intrauterine insemination(IUI) were compared using the semen samples of seventy-three infertile couples. The sperms were prepared by a swim-up after sperm washing or by a continuous percoll gradient technique. Fourteen of 35 women conceived during IUI cycles using a sperm washing and swim-up method (40%), and 12 of 38 women conceived during IUI cycles using a percoll gradient technique(31.6%). Among the group with male infertile etiologic factor only, one of 5 women conceived during sperm washing and swim-up cycles(20%); one of 4 women conceived during percoll gradient cycles(25%). On the contrary, among the group with cervical factor only, six of 10 women conceived during sperm washing and swim-up cycles (60%) ; Five of 17 women conceived during percoll gradient cycles(29.4%). It is suggested that sperm separation by sperm washing ar -up is a useful technique for intrauterine insemination in cervical infertility, and sperm separation in percoll gradient appears to be more valuable for intrauterine insemination of male subfertility.
A new HPLC chiral stationary phase (CSP 3) has been prepared by connecting N-phenyl N-propyl amide of (S)-naproxen to silica gel through the 6-methoxy-2-naphthyl group of (S)-naproxen. The new CSP has been applied in resolving a homologous series of N-(3,5-dinitrobenzoyl)-α-amino acid esters and a homologous series of N-(3,5-dinitrobenzoyl)-α-(4-alkylphenyl)alkylamines. The separation factors, α, for resolving a homologous series of N-(3,5-dinitrobenzoyl)-α-amino esters and a homologous series of N-(3,5-dinitrobenzoyl)-α-(4-alkylphenyl)alkylamines on the new CSP have been found to remain almost constant throughout the wide range of the length of the alkyl substituent of the analytes while those on the previously reported CSPs (CSP 1 and 2) which were prepared by connecting N-phenyl N-propyl amide of (S)-naproxen to silica gel through the N-propyl group increase or decrease continuously. These results are concluded to support the chiral recognition models which utilize the intercalation of the alkyl substituent of the racemic analytes between the adjacent strands of CSP 1 or 2 to rationalize the increasing or decreasing trends of separation factors.
Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) is caused by insufficient production of insulin, which is involved in carbohydrate metabolism. Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) has insulin resistance in which cells do not respond adequately to insulin. The purpose of this study was to estimate the characteristics of type 1 diabetes using streptozotocin-treated mice (STZ-mouse). The sera samples were collected from the models of hyperglycemic mouse and healthy mouse. Based on the pair-wise comparison, five metabolites were found to be noticeable: glucose, malonic acid, 3-hyroxybutyrate, methanol, and tryptophan. It was very natural glucose was upregulated in STZ-mouse. 3-hyroxybutyrate was also increased in the model. However, malonic acid, tryptophan, and methanol was downregulated in STZ-mouse. Several metabolites acetoacetate, acetone, alanine, arginine, asparagine, histidine, lysine, malate, methionine, ornithine, proline, propylene glycol, threonine, tyrosine, and urea tended to be varied in STZ-mouse while the statistical significance was not stratified for the variation. The multivariate model of PCA clearly showed the group separation between healthy control and STZ-mouse. The most significant metabolites that contributed the group separation included glucose, citrate, ascorbate, and lactate. Lactate did not show the statistical significance of change in t-test while it tends to down-regulated both in DNP and Diabetes.
A Study on environmental factors influencing blood pressure control of a patient with essential pressure hyper -tension was conduct to the identification of differences of demographic characteristics, socioeconomic factors and living habits. This study was performed on 219 cases who were divided into two groups from Sept. 14 to Oct. 20, 1979. One is the group with complication in the departments of internal medicine and outpatient of 7 hospitals in Seoul. The other is the group without complication in the same places as above. The instrument applied to this study consists of 19 items amended through preliminary test after consideration of related literatural review and Nursing History made by Smith (1965). The materials were analyzed by computer program. The findings were as follows : 1. The group with complication had more sleep disturbances than the group without complication 2. The group with complication used more short term coping method on stress than the group without complication. 3. The group with complication had a tendency to more intake of salt, fat, alcohols and cigretts than the group without complition, but there were no significant differences between two groups. 4. The group with complication were lower social class than the group without complication. 5. The group with complication were more single(Death of spouse, Divorce, Separation) in marital status than the group without complication.

A reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatographic method was developed to determine the optical purity of bevantolol enantiomers. (S)-(-)-Menthyl chloroformate((-)-MCF), (S)-(-)-$\alpha$-methylbenzyl isocyanate((-)-MBIC) and 2,3,4,6-tetra-O-acetyl-$\beta$-D-glucopyranosyl isothiocyanate(GITC), which can react with the secondary amine group of bevantolol were investigated as chiral derivatization reagents. Among them indirect chiral HPLC method using CITC gave the best result. The derivatization proceeded quantitatively within 20 min at room temperature. Separation of the enantiomers as diastereomers was achieved by reversed-phase HPLC within 20min using ODS column. Different ratios of (S)-(-)-bevantolol and (R)-(+)-bevantolol were prepared. Enantiomeric separation of these mixtures took place on a chiralcel OD column or, after derivatization with GITC, on a ODS column. No racemization was found during the experiment. This method allowed determination of 0.05% of either enantiomer in the presence of its stereoisomer and method validation showed adequete linearity over the required range.
The convenient derivatization method of chiral amino alcohols as 9-anthraldimine Schiff base derivatives for chiral resolution was developed and the liquid chromatographic enantiomer separation of chiral amino alcohols as 9-anthraldimine derivatives was investigated on several coated and covalently bonded polysaccharide-derived chiral stationary phases (CSPs). In general, the performance of Chiralcel OD-H (or Chiralcel OD) (${\alpha}$ = 1.24-2.89), the coated CSP derived from cellulose derivative was superior to the other CSPs for resolution of 9-anthraldimine derivatives of several amino alcohols. The results of enantioseparation depending on the structure of 9-anthraldimine analytes like the steric bulky group and the polar moiety etc were discussed. The analytical method was applied to measure the enantiomeric purity of commercially available chiral amino alcohols. It is expected that the convenient analytical method will be very efficient for determination of enantiomeric purity of amino alcohols as 9-anthraldimine Schiff base derivatives with strong UV absorption.
Interfacial reactions kinetics often differ from kinetics of bulk reactions. Here, we describe how the density change of an immobilized reactant influences the kinetics of interfacial reactions. Self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of alkanethiolates on gold were used as a model interface and the Diels-Alder reaction between immobilized quinones and soluble cyclopentadiene was used as a model reaction. The kinetic behavior was studied using varying concentrations of quinones. An unusual threshold density of quinones (${\Gamma}_c$ = 5.2-7.2%), at which the pseudo-first order rate constant started to vary as the reaction progressed, was observed. This unexpected kinetic behavior was attributed to the phase-separation phenomena of multi-component SAMs. Additional experiments using more phase-separated two-component SAMs supported this explanation by revealing a significant decrease in ${\Gamma}_c$ values. When the background hydroxyl group was replaced with carboxylic or phosphoric acid groups, ${\Gamma}_c$ was observed at below 1%. Also, more phase-separated thermodynamically controlled SAMs produced a lower critical density (3% < ${\Gamma}_c$ < 4.9%) than that of the less phaseseparated kinetically controlled SAMs (6.5% < ${\Gamma}_c$ < 8.9%).
