  • Construction industry ranks as the largest industry and imparts a significant part in developing and achieving the aims of society. Due to the involvement of larger number of stakeholders, construction industry is complex in nature. The current study is designed to identify and evaluate the factors affecting the success of construction projects in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), Pakistan. To carry out the study, a questionnaire was developed in term of interview pilot study. The data from the questionnaire survey was analyzed through SPSS software in five groups to accumulate authenticity of 44 factors. Later on the ranking was done by relative importance index (RII). According to the outcome of the research, "Project Group" stood highest among the five groups with factor of "project size" at the top rank while "Contractor Group" stood lowest with the factor of "client size" at bottom rank. From the study it is concluded that the Project Group is identified as a crucial blockade in success of construction projects. By giving pivotal attention to project group, the projects could be successfully attained from factors of project size, materials and equipment, funds and resources and project planning. To focus on the factors of project group, trust of the province people could be restored in construction of projects.

  • Background: Stopping medical treatment by tuberculosis (TB) patients prior to completing treatment period is a major concern in private hospitals. We evaluated the impact of public-private mix (PPM) project on increasing treatment success rate of TB in a private tertiary hospital in Korea. Methods: Starting in February 2009, TB patients treated at Dankook University Hospital received health education and case monitoring activities by specially trained public health nurses (PPM project). On a retrospective basis, we reviewed medical records and compared the treatment outcome of TB patients treated under the PPM project (PPM group) to patients treated without the PPM project (control group) between January 2008 and June 2010. In addition, we also evaluated the risk factors treatment non-completion. Results: The number of patients in the PPM group and control group were 123 (85 pulmonary TB and 38 extrapulmonary TB) and 146 (101 pulmonary TB and 45 extra-pulmonary TB), respectively. The PPM group had demographic and clinical findings comparable to those of control group. The PPM group showed a significantly higher treatment success rate (93.5%) compared to the control group (77.9%). However, development of complications, proximity to the hospital, and presence of co-morbid disease did not influence the treatment success rate. Conclusion: The PPM project was effective at increasing the TB treatment success rate. An effort to improve and to expand the PPM project is needed in private Korean hospitals.

  • This study used meta-analysis to synthesize the effectiveness of the project approach. After reviewing 51 studies, we analyzed the effect size of 119 articles published between 1990 and 2002 using SAS 8.2 program. The grand average of the project approach effectiveness was 1.03. This implies that the experimental group that employing the project approach is more effective than control group by the 35 percentile. We also found that the project approach is more effective for preschool children group (1.21, 89%) than for the elementary school children group (0.88, 81%). Specific variables regarding the effectiveness of the project approach were analyzed and its consequences were discussed.

  • Group social capital can be defined as an intangible asset that promotes knowledge sharing and social interaction. It is posited here that the group social capital raised and nurtured among group members positively influences on team performance in IS (Information Systems) development projects. And communication effectiveness is selected as a critical antecedent and its detailed relationships with the dimensions of group social capital are analyzed. Effective communication plays important role in ISD project teams by integrating knowledge from different areas. Moderating effects of project phase between the sub-dimensions of social capital and project performance are investigated. Hypotheses are tested using data from 131 project teams of 85 manufacturing firms. The results indicated that Communication effectiveness positively impacted sub-dimensions of social capital (social ties, trust, and shared vision). Moreover, the team performance is influenced by shared vision and trust, leaving social ties as a leading subcontract, as theoretically proposed in prior research. The project phase moderates the impact of shared vision on team performance.

  • Objectives: Cinnamomi Ramulus (CR), the young twig of Cinnamomum loureirri nees, has been used for treating symptoms related to pain, rheumatic arthritis and inflammation in Korean herb medicine. This study was carried out to investigate the anti-inflammatory effect of CR in vivo and in vitro. Methods: Extracts of CR were prepared and the chemical components of the extracts were examined by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The extracts were administrated to the rat paw edema model induced by carrageenan to evaluate the anti-inflammatory effect of CR. The expressions of nitric oxide (NO), prostaglandin E2 (PGE2), inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and cyclooxygenase (COX)-2 were also quantified in lipopolysaccharide(LPS)induced RAW 264.7 macrophages to survey the effect of CR in vitro. The main components were cinnamaldehyde and coumarin. Results: We examined the anti-inflammatory activity of the $80\%$ ethanol extract of Cinnamomi Ramulus in vivo by using carrageenan-induced rat paw edema model. Maximum inhibition of $54.91\%$ was noted at the dose of l1000mg/kg after 2 hours of drug administration in carrageenan-induced rat paw edema and this showed a potent anti-inflammatory effect. Conclusions: The results showed that Cinnamomi Ramulus suppressed dose-dependently LPS-induced NO production in RAW 264.7 macrophages and also decreased iNOS protein expression. Cinnamomi Ramulus also showed a significant inhibitory effect in LPS-induced PGE2 production and COX-2 expression.
