Purpose: This study has proved the intervention effects of the proposed logotherapy-based music imagery (LBMI) program on the self-worth of the personal assistants for the disabled. The program, in the image activities and at the stage of postlude after listening to music, unites logodrama of logotherapy, paradoxical intention and dereflected techniques. The intervention effects of the LBMI program were tested for the 28 personal assistants for the disabled who found themselves without the value and meaning of life and were randomly equally divided into the experimental and control groups. This intervention was carried out for the six different terms, each of which was alloted 60 minutes. To evaluate the intervention effects, the self-worth scale were examined before and after the intervention for both experimental and control group. The result shows that the self-worth improved significantly in the experimental group(p < 0.001), whereas it remained unchanged in the control group(p > 0.459). This finding proves that the proposed LBMI program ameliorates the self-worth of the personal assistants for the disabled.
The purpose of this study was to examine how a therapeutic drumming intervention would impact middle school students with regard to school violence prevention. Participants were all in the third-year class of a middle school in Korea. A school music teacher and a music therapist designed and implemented the program collaboratively, and mainly used dyadic, synchronized, and improvisational drumming based on the Social Emotional Learning core competencies. A total of 65 students participated in a weekly 45-minute program for 10 weeks. Ten participants out of 65 were selected for interviews and the rest of the 55 participants were asked to fill out an open-ended survey. Content analysis of the survey and interviews produced 492 meaningful statements, which were categorized into seven themes: somatic responses to drumming, emotional processing, group cohesion, empathy, relationship with peers, self-esteem, and self-regulation. The findings indicated that dyadic, synchronized, and improvisational drumming may promote prosocial behaviors in students of this age. The author discussed that drumming produces physical input directly from the instruments, which prompts students to identify and empathize with their own or others' emotions. This study therefore suggests that collaborative work between school music teachers and music therapists may positively impact middle school students' prosocial behaviors, as they pertain to school violence in Korea.
Mothers of Children with Disabilities have many difficulties in parenting because of their children's disabilities. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of a Group music psychotherapy programs on parenting stress and self efficacy, and to explore the experiences of the mothers who participated in the program. Twenty mothers of children with disabilities participated in this study. These twenty mothers were divided into 10 mothers of each group. The Experimental group participated in the Group music psychotherapy programs, while the control group did not. The Group music psychotherapy program was implemented for 8 weeks. To prove the effects of the program, pretest-posttest control group design was applied. The differences between pre-test and post-test of two groups were analyzed using independent t-test. The quantitative results of the study were as follows: First, a significant differences was found between the experimental group and control group in parenting stress level. Second, a significant differences was found between the experimental group and control group in self-efficacy level. From the qualitative analyses, four themes emerged from the decrement of parenting stress; Positive change of recognition about their children, Getting rid of stress, Keeping their composure, and Sharing of their emotions. And three themes emerged from the increment of self-efficacy; Discovery of oneself, New stimulus, and Mental support. All the result described above shows that group music psychotherapy program gives positive effect to decrease in parenting stress and also to increase in self-efficacy. And new possibility and effectiveness can be proposed in the music therapeutic approach to the parents of children with disabilities.
Purpose: This study was conducted to develop and to determine the effects of an integrated symptom management program for prevention of recurrent cardiac events after percutaneous coronary intervention. Methods: Subjects consisted of 58 CAD patients (experimental group: 30, control group: 28). The experimental group participated in an integrated symptom management program for 6 months which was composed of tailored education, stress management, exercise, diet, deep breathing, music therapy, periodical telephone monitoring and a daily log. The control group received the usual care. Results: The experimental group significantly decreased symptom experiences and the level of LDL compared to the control group. The experimental group significantly increased self care activity and quality of life compared to the control group. Although no significant difference was found in cardiac recurrence, the experimental group had fewer recurrences. Conclusion: These results suggest that an integrated symptom management program for prevention of recurrent cardiac events after percutaneous coronary intervention can improve symptom aggravation, recurrent rate, self care activity and quality of life. Nursing interventions are needed to maintain and further enhance the quality of life of these patients and the interventions should be implemented in the overall transition period.
Purposes: This study was conducted in order to investigate the effects of passive music listening on psychological well-being and depression in 134 nursing students enrolled in two colleges of nursing in Kyeonggi-do, Korea. Methods: A prospective, pretest and posttest, controlled, quasi-experimental design was used. An intervention group (n= 74) participated in a 14-week passive music listening program before and after each lecture while those who were assigned as a control group (n=60) were given a series of traditional lectures. Analysis of data was performed using chi-square test, independent t-test, and Mann-Whitney U test, using SPSS 19.0. Results: Although no significant difference was observed in psychological well-being (t=0.34, p=.738), depression (z=-3.19, p=.001) showed a significant difference in the experimental group compared to the control group. Conclusions: This study provided evidence of the beneficial impact of passive music listening for nursing students with depression. Conduct of further studies will be needed in order to verify the effects on psychological well-being.
This study was done to explore the effects of dance therapy on pulmonary and cognitive functions in the elderly. The design of this study was a non-equivalent pre-post test experiment. The subjects consisted of elderly persons living in a facility located in Kyoungi-Do. Fifty eight subjects had normal cognition, sensory function and resting blood pressure. They underwent tests of pulmonary and cognitive function as baseline data before dance therapy, and at 6th week and at the end of 12nd week after following dance therapy. Twenty seven elderly persons were assigned to the experimental group and participated with the dance therapy. This therapy was based on the Marian Chace's dance therapy and Korean traditional dance with music. The dance therapy consisted of 50 minutes session, 3 times a week for 12 weeks. One session consisted of warming-up, expression, catharsis, sharing and closing stage. the intensity of the dance therapy was at the 40% of age-adjusted maximum heart rates. Data were analyzed with mean, standard deviation, Chi-square test, unpaired t-test, repeated measures ANOVA, and Bonferroni multiple regression using SAS program. The results were as follows : 1. Pulmonary function(forced expiratory volume at one second and forced vital capacity) of the experimental subjects significantly increased over time more than that of the control subjects. 2. The experimental group had significantly higher score for pulmonary function than the control group at the 12nd week after dance therapy. 3. Cognitive function of the experimental subjects significantly increased over time more than that of the control subjects. 4. The experimental group had significantly higher score for cognitive function than the control group at the 6th week and 12nd week after dance therapy. The findings showed the dance therapy could be effective in improving the pulmonary and cognitive function of the elderly.
Objectives The purpose of this study is to understand the research trend of reports on forest therapy so far and analyze the Korean medicine therapy being applied in forest therapy programs. Methods We ran a keyword search on domestic databases with the following keyword 'forest therapy, forest healing, forest treatment, recreational forest, forest bath, forest experience'. The search took place in December 2014 and there was no limit to search time. A total of 334 forest therapy articles have been selected. Results The number of research on forest therapy continued to rise from 1985, with 334 articles being published from 84 journals. When those 188 articles were sorted by their contents and methods, except 146 articles of survey on simple satisfaction, recognition and visting, 94 were clinical studies, 79 were literature studies, 15 were experimental studies. Of the 94 clinical researches, there were 52 CCTs (Controled Clinical Trials), 39 ODs (efficacy studies with either a controlled or an Other than controlled Design) and 3 RCTs (Randomized Clinical Trials). Among the clinical researches, there were a total of 21 studies that used Korean Medicine programs, and meditation was the most popular, being used in 18 studies. Herbal food and tea therapy and Qigong were used in 3 studies each, and Korean medicine music programs were used in 2 studies. Conclusions A systematic and standardized Korean medicine forest therapy program must be developed, and based on the program, more research treating diseases should be conducted.
The purpose of this case study was to construct a social context-based musical play program for children with high-functioning Autism Spectrum disorder (ASD) and to examine its applicability in improving the social skills of the children. The participants were a group of three children with high-functioning ASD with an average age of 9 years. The children participated as a group in 40-minute sessions that were implemented twice a week for 8 weeks. The children's social communication behaviors were observed during the sessions and analyzed in terms of sharing and exchanging their ideas and voluntarily interacting with peers and an adult (i.e., the researcher). The Social Skills Rating System (SSRS) was completed by the teachers of participants before and after the intervention. For all three participants, the occurrence of behaviors to exchange their ideas with peers and voluntarily interacting with an adult increased following the intervention. However, there were individual differences between the participants in terms of changes in each target behavior depending on their level of language and social skill development. These results suggest that social context-based musical play program may produce positive changes in voluntary communication with peers and play a significant role in expanding the scope of interventions that target the social communication of children with ASD.
The purpose of this study was to develop a group validation therapy(V/T) which could be implemented for the elderly with dementia in nursing home, and to evaluate the effectiveness of the program on cognition, ADL(Activity of Daily Living), depression, problematic behavior and QOL(Quality of Life). Subjects were recruited from 4 nursing homes in D city. The sample comprised forty elderly with dementia, capable of verbal communication. Each twenty were in an experimental and control groups. However, four elders with dementia dropped out in experimental and control groups due to personal affairs. Experimental group completed twelve consecutive group validation therapy sessions that combined centering, asking factual questions, rephrasing, identifying and using the preferred sense, asking the extreme, imagining the opposite, reminiscing, touching, maintaining eye contact and a caring tone of voice, observing, matching and expressing the emotion with emotion, using ambiguity, linking behavior with a basic human need, using music and mirroring techniques. Following the intervention, experimental group experienced a significant improvement in cognition, ADL, depression, and QOL. But it is a nonsignificant in problematic behavior on statistically. As a result, a group validation therapy should be applied as an effective and practical psychosocial intervention for the elderly with dementia.
Purpose: This study was intended for the enhancement of the elderly's quality of life helping them overcome their physiological changes about aging and reinforcing their vitality. Methods: An nonequivalent control group post-test design was used for the study. The methods to perform the abdominal respiration exercise and to blow the pan-flute were demonstrated to 31 experimental subjects and 36 control subjects. The eight-week 30 minute daily home respiration exercise recipes were prescribed to the subjects. Mobile spirometers were used to measure FVC, $FEV_1$, $FFV_1$ / FVC, $SaO_2$, breathing discomfort. Daily life satisfaction scores were recorded. Music therapy accompanied the eight-week respiration program. A post-test was performed in the same manner as the pre-test. The gathered data were analysed by SPSS/WIN program. Results: 1) The pulmonary function and daily life satisfaction were significantly improved in the experimental group. 2) Both the experimental and control groups did not show significant differences in $SaO_2$. 3) The breathing discomfort was significantly reduced in the experimental group. Conclusion: The respiration exercise program for the elderly through the pan-flute improves the respiration activity of the elderly and enhances their daily life satisfaction scores. Therefore, this program produces effects in enhancing the quality of life for the elderly.
