  • Recently, a physically based model of water-table fluctuation due to precipitation is developed based on aquifer water balance model. In the model, it was assumed that the water infiltration into ground surface is advection dominant and immediately reaches to water-table. The assumption may be suited for the sites where the water-table is shallow and/or the permeability of the unsaturated zone is high. However, there are more cases where the model is not directly applicable due to thick and low permeable unsaturated zone. For the low permeability unsaturated zone, the pattern of water flux passing through unsaturated zone is diffusive as well as advective. In this study, to improve the previously developed water-table fluctuation model, we combined the delayed drainage model, which has long been used in well hydraulics, to the water-table fluctuation model. To test the validity of the development, we apply the developed model to 5 different domestic sites. The model parameters are calibrated based on the groundwater hydrograph and the precipitation time series, and the correlation analyses among the parameters are pursued. The overall analyses on the delineated model parameters indicate that the delayed drainage parameters or delay index used in the developed model are able to reveal drainage information in the unsaturated zones.

  • In this study, a combined model of a water-table fluctuation and a soil moisture content model is proposed for the estimation of groundwater recharge rate at a given location. To evaluate the model, groundwater level data from 4 monitoring wells (Pohang Yeonil, Pohang Kibuk, Suncheon Oeseo, Hongcheon Hongcheon) of National Groundwater Monitoring Network from 1996 to 2005 and precipitation data of corresponding years are used. From the proposed methodology, the groundwater recharge rates are estimated to be from 0.5 to 61.4% for Hongcheon Hongcheon, from 1.1 to 27.4% for Pohang Yeonil, from 5.1 to 41.4% for Pohang Kibuk, and from 1.1 to 8.3% for Suncheon Oeseo. The magnitude of variation of the estimated recharge rate depends on the soil type observed near the stations. The groundwater fluctuation model used in this study includes precipitation as a unique source of water-table perturbation and there may exist corollary limitations. To improve the applicability of the proposed method, a capillary-water content constitutive model for unsaturated fractured rock media may be considered. The proposed recharge rate delineation method is physically based and uses minimum numbers of assumptions. The method may be used as a better substitute for the previous tools for delineating recharge rate of a location using water-table fluctuation method and contribute to national groundwater management plan. Further research on the spatial interpolation of the method is under progress.

  • In this study, a groundwater table fluctuation method is suggested to predict groundwater level by means of groundwater table fluctuation due to recharge and discharge under unsteady condition. This model analyzes groundwater variation characteristics by using reaction factor related with groundwater flow and specific yield related with recharge. For the test of this model, measured groundwater level at JD Yongdam 1 and JW Konghang for 5 years (2006-2010) were used. At JD Yongdam 1, the estimated specific yield was 0.023, and the estimated reaction factor was 0.039. At JW Konghang, the estimated specific yield was 0.009 and the estimated reaction factor was 0.028, respectively. This model can estimate recharge and saturated parameters, thus it is expected that this model would be the proper tool for checking the parameter of hydrologic model and percolation features.

  • The water-table fluctuation (WTF) method has been often used for estimating groundwater recharge by analysis of waterlevel measurements in observation wells. An important assumption inherent in the method is that the water level rise is solely caused by precipitation recharge. For the observation wells located near a stream, however, the water-level can be highly affected by the stream level fluctuations as well as precipitation recharge. Therefore, in applying the WTF method, there should be consideration regarding the effect of stream-aquifer interactions. Analysis of water-level hydrographs from the National Groundwater Monitoring Wells of Korea showed that they could be classified into three different types depending on their responses to either precipitation recharge or stream level fluctuations. A simple groundwater flow model was used to analyze the errors of the WTF method, which were associated with stream-aquifer interactions. Not surprisingly, the model showed that the WTF method could greatly overestimate recharge, when it was used for the observation wells of which the water-level was affected by streams. Therefore, in Korea, where most groundwater hydrographs are acquired from wells nearby a stream, more caution is demanded in applying the WTF method.

  • In this work, we have carried out a sensitivity analysis of hydrogeologic parameters such as reaction factor and drainable pore space in groundwater table fluctuation model and have found characteristics of parameter distribution according to the altitude. We found that drainable pore space which is hydrogeologic parameter of aquifer didn't show any trend with altitude while reaction factor which is groundwater flow characteristic showed clear trend with altitude. To find a sensitivity of parameters, we compared RMSE of estimated groundwater recharges by using the mean value and linear relationship of parameters. As results, the linear equation derived for entire watersheds could be applied to estimate parameters for ungauged watershed. Furthermore, the features of parameter distribution can be used to predict hydrogeologic parameter in ungauged watersheds and it is expected that those features could be used for a basic data for groundwater modeling.

  • The groundwater level varies according to the characteristics and composite materials of aquifer. In this study, specific yield and reaction factor which are the major two hydrogeological parameters in the WTF(Water Table Fluctuation) method were estimated and analyzed spatial characteristics. 8 groundwater level stations which have enough measuring period and high correlation with rainfall in the Hancheon watershed were used. The results showed that specific yield was randomly distributed and reaction factor showed inverse trend with altitude. If the enough data were collected, reaction factor according to altitude in ungauged points could be estimated by using these parameter characteristics.

  • As hydrogeologic parameters such as hydraulic conductivity and specific yield are estimated by aquifer test, these are dependent on specific points at which field test was conducted. To overcome these site-specific limitations, a method of estimating transmissivity of aquifer using distribution features for parameters in Water table fluctuation model is newly suggested. Distribution features in reaction factor, specific yield and transmissivity having the function of pore space in aquifer are used to derive empirical equation for estimating transmissivity. From the result for applying the equation for 10 groundwater stations in Northeast Jeju Island, this equation is available for estimating transmissivity compared to the value estimated by existing equations. The estimated transmissivity ranged from 14.2 to $3,716.9m^2/day$, and its average was $821.8m^2/day$.

  • In this study, daily based groundwater recharge was estimated under unsteady state by using groundwater table fluctuation model developed by Kim et al. (2013). This technique analyzes groundwater variation characteristics by using reaction factor related with groundwater flow and specific yield related with recharge. For the application of this model, measured groundwater level at JD Yongdam 1 and JW Konghang for 5 years were used. This model can estimate daily based groundwater recharge and the computed groundwater levels showed good agreement with measured groundwater levels. At JD Yongdam 1 and JW Konghang, the estimated recharges (rates) were 520.4~904.0mm (32.7~61.8%) and 447.4~633.4mm (24.0~45.1%), respectively. The developed model can be suggested as an efficient and precise method to estimate daily based groundwater recharge by using groundwater level data.

  • Several attempts to construct multi-purpose tunnel for both road and waterway have been made. The multi-purpose tunnel is mainly used as a road tunnel, however it is transferred to waterway to control flood during rainy season. The planning of the multi-purpose tunnel is recognized as cost-effective way of infrastructure construction. In case of the multi-purpose tunnel constructed beneath groundwater table, seasonal fluctuation of groundwater table and repeated flow in the tunnel may cause long-term deterioration of the tunnel system. In this study, the behavior of multi-purpose tunnel in view of groundwater table or flow in the tunnel is investigated using model test and numerical modeling method. The results have shown that rising of groundwater table caused buoyant force to the tunnel and the fluctuation of rainwater in the tunnel generated loosening of surrounding ground. It is recommended to evaluate the effect of the long-term water pressure variation in the design of a multi-purpose tunnel.

  • In this work, the delay time for groundwater recharge was estimated by comparing simulated recharges by means of SWAT(Soil and Water Assessment Tool) model and WTF(Water Table Fluctuation) method. The delay time for groundwater recharge means that the time when the water from rainfall travelled through vadose zone just after getting out of soil zone bottom. As measuring this delay time is almost impossible, we used to compare the estimated values from modeling(SWAT) and analytic method(WTF). The test site is Hancheon watershed which has 8 groundwater measurement stations. The results show that the altitude has a linear relationship with the estimated delay time values. To validate these results, we conducted corelation analysis between transformed groundwater levels and observed ones. The results showed that computed groundwater levels have good corelation($R^2$=0.97, 0.87, respectively). The estimated delay time would be used for the groundwater behaviour characteristics in vadose zone. As recharge rates vary according to the height, the delay time is thought to be an import variable for the proper groundwater recharge estimation.
