  • In case the fault occurs in AC power supply network, protective relaying system must selectively detect line-to-line/ground fault and immediately cut off the power flow into the fault location for guaranteeing the safety of people, electric vehicle and ground installation etc. It is the most important point in power system operation to minimize the fault duration by rapid trip scheme and accurate estimation of the fault location. In this paper, we analyze the load characteristics of each vehicle, perform the fault analysis of AC power supply network using AT current-ratio method. The result shows its usefulness.

  • In conventional stability analysis of embankment on soft clay ground, an averaged undrained shear strength$(s_u)$ for the depth of clay layer is usually used. Also, all applied load is assumed to an immediate load for simplicity of analysis. The load in the field, however, increases gradually. Undrained shear strength increases during loading due to consolidation of clay ground. In this study, the stability analysis program(RSI-SLOPE) is developed. By using this program, it is possible to consider the rate of strength increase according to the elapsed time of consolidation and the depth of clay ground. And the rested duration for consolidation and gradually increased load can also be considered. Using the examples of some embankments, the critical embankment heights calculated by RSI-SLOPE program are compared with those by PCSTABL without the considerations of gradually increased load and rate of strength increase. In addition, this study contains analysis and comparison about the influence of coefficient of consolidation$(c_u)$ and drainage distance$(H_{DR})$ in the embankment design. RSI-SlOPE program may be useful for more effective and accurate embankment design.

  • The pupose of the present paper is to estimate the effects of constraint condition of pile head, ground condition(dry unit weight. $\gamma_4$) and embedded pile lengths on the behavior of single pile which is embedded in normally consolidated clay. BBperiment functions can be quantified to these effects obtained from the results of model teats. The ground of model tests is normally consolidated( NC ) clay under three kinds of effective vertical stress. The results of the model tests using the steel pile of two different embedded pile length and of free-head and fired-head show that the lateral load-deflection relationship is to be elasto plastic behavior below $\gamma_d/\gamma_{dmax}$: 0.84 and that the reduction of lateral load of beyond maximum lateral load($Q_{max}$) at each model test is significantly time-dependent. In this study, it is shown that the displacement relationship can be fitted to exponential function of time by model best results. The effect of ground conditions on the ultimate and yield lateral load is fitted to exponential function including the ratio of dry unit weight to maximum dry unit weight. When tests by results are compared with those from Broms and Budhu et at., the predicted results are over-estimated about 27-87 ayo. In effectivity of constraint condition of pile head on the lateral load-deflection response, the $Q_{fixed}/Q_{gree}-y/D$ relationship is highly non-linear and fitted to parabolic function.

  • As construction for road and train tunnel is increasing, various geotechnical conditions can be faced during the construction stage. Especially, if the tunnel is located in limestone area, the cavity is mostly to locate in tunnel planning location. One or some cavities which can be harmful for tunnel safety are predicted. Hence, this study was fulfilled to confirm the influence between tunnel and cavity using laboratory scale down model test and numerical analysis. The scale down model test was carried out to confirm the failure load of the model ground about the interval length of cavity and tunnel and to analyze behaviour characteristics of the model ground on the cavity shape. From the model test result, the failure load decrease in accordance with decreasing of interval length between cavity and tunnel within 0.5D. The numerical analyses were carried out for verification about scale down model test. From the numerical analysis result, tunnel safety decreases in the case of the interval between cavity and tunnel within 0.5D.

  • In this paper, a practical method of estimating the flap hinge moments which change according to the aircraft flap operations was introduced. For the flap design, the hinge moment derived by structural load analysis and wind tunnel tests was able to be compared with the real flight hinge moment, and the static safety of the flap structure could be verified though this comparison. In order to perform the tests, two strain gauges were installed on the flap hinge and an onboard device for aircraft load monitoring was utilized. Through the ground test, the correlation between the strain and the moment of the flap hinge was calibrated with analytic and finite element analysis. During the flight test, strain signals together with the flap deflection angles and airspeed were recorded. Finally, the flight hinge moments could be predicted by the measured strain which was calibrated with the analytic and the finite element analysis.

  • This paper proposes and demonstrates novel flexible contact force sensing devices for 3-dimensional force measurement. To realize the sensor, polyimide and polydimethylsiloxane are used as a substrate, which makes it flexible. Thin-film metal strain gauges, which are incorporated into the polymer, are used for measuring the three-dimensional contact forces. The force sensor characteristics are evaluated against normal and shear load. The fabricated force sensor can measure normal loads up to 4N. The sensor output signals are saturated against load over 4N. Shear loads can be detected by different voltage drops in strain gauges. The device has no fragile structures; therefore, it can be used as a ground reaction force sensor for balance control in humanoid robots. Four force sensors are assembled and placed in the four corners of the robot's sole. By increasing bump dimensions, the force sensor can measure load up to 20N. When loads are exerted on the sole, the ground reaction force can be measured by these four sensors. The measured forces can be used in the balance control of biped locomotion system.

  • In this study, eleven reinforced concrete beams, ground granulated blast furnace slag, replacing recycled coarse aggregate (BRS series) and recycled coarse aggregate with steel fiber (BSRS series), and standard specimen (BSS) were constructed and tested under monotonic loading. Experimental programs were carried out to improve and evaluate the shear performance of such test specimens, such as the load-displacement, the failure mode and the maximum load carrying capacity. All the specimens were modeled in 1/2 scale-down size. Test results showed that test specimens (BSRS Series) was increased the compressive strength by 9%, the maximum load carrying capacity by 1~6% and the ductility capacity by 1.02~1.13 times in comparison with the standard specimen (BSS). And the specimens (BSRS Series) showed enough ductile behavior and stable flexural failure.

  • This paper deals with the bearing capacity behaviour of geosynthetic-reinforced stone column(GRSC) constructed in soft ground, as part of an investigation regarding the applicability of GRSC in Korea. In this study, two-dimensional finite element analyses were performed to investigate the effect of relevant design factors on the bearing capacity behaviour. The parametric study is performed for various influencing factors. The results indicated that the geogrid encasement tends to significantly improve the load carrying capacity of a stone column. Also found were that the geogrid encasement length and its stiffness significantly affect the load carrying capacity behaviour of GRSC, and that the encasement length of three times the stone column diameter is sufficient in mobilizing the full reinforcement effect. Practical implications of the findings are discussed.

  • For soft ground, a pile foundation is typically used as a substructure of transmission tower. However, differential settlement between the foundations can cause structural damage of transmission tower. The connected-pile foundation is a type of group foundation consisting of four foundations connected with beams, and it was suggested in USA and Japan. In this study, a series of 1/8 scale model pile tests were performed to investigate the effect of load direction and stiffness of connecting beam on the responses of connected-pile foundation. As a result, the load capacities of the connected-pile foundation were larger than those of the conventional group pile foundation. For example, under the given test conditions in this paper, the resistibility against differential settlement was improved significantly for connected-pile foundation and its efficiency was maximized when the stiffness of connecting beams is about 25% of the mat foundation.
