  • We have analyzed influence of potential rise in negative bus, which caused by decrease of power feeding line insulation, upon protecting method of DC ground protection device which detecting potential rise between negative bus and ground in order to detect ground fault in the rubber wheel system. For this purpose, we proposed negative potential equation between negative bus and ground and calculated negative potential according to system condition changes by estimating power feeding line insulation changes in steel wheel system and rubber wheel system, and equalizing DC power feeding system when ground fault occurred. Also, in order to estimate negative potential of real system, we modeled the rubber wheel system, and simulated normal status, grounding fault occurrence and power feeding line insulation changes. In normal status, negative potential did not rise significantly regardless of vehicle operation. When ground fault occurred, negative potential rose up over 300V regardless of fault resistance. However, we also observed that negative potential rose when power feeding line insulation dropped down under $1M{\Omega}$. In conclusion, our result shows that in case of rubber wheel system unlike steel wheel system, relay will be prevented maloperation and insulation status observation can be ensured when ground over voltage relay will be set 200V ~ 300V.

  • Ground motions in near source region of large crustal earthquakes are significantly affected by rupture directivity and tectonic fling. These effects are the strongest at longer periods and they can have a significant impact on Engineering Structures. In this paper, it is aimed to determine near-fault ground motion effects on the nonlinear response of dams including dam-reservoir-foundation interaction. Four different types of dam, which are gravity, arch, concrete faced rockfill and clay core rockfill dams, are selected to investigate the near-fault ground motion effects on dam responses. The behavior of reservoir is taken into account by using Lagrangian approach. Strong ground motion records of Duzce (1999), Northridge (1994) and Erzincan (1992) earthquakes are selected for the analyses. Displacements, maximum and minimum principal stresses are determined by using the finite element method. The displacements and principal stresses obtained from the four different dam types subjected to these nearfault strong-ground motions are compared with each other. It is seen from the results that near-fault ground motions have different impacts on the dam types.

  • This paper propose a new 3D SVM method for three-phase four wire inverter for fault isolation at a single line ground fault. The available switching combination for isolation of a single line ground fault was analyzed. Using this method, voltage vector diagrams according to each switching combination were classified according to various ground fault situations, and 3D SVM method was performed by generating command for fault isolation. The proposed methods are mathematically analyzed and verified by PSIM simulation.

  • In case the fault occurs in AC power supply network, protective relaying system must selectively detect line-to-line/ground fault and immediately cut off the power flow into the fault location for guaranteeing the safety of people, electric vehicle and ground installation etc. It is the most important point in power system operation to minimize the fault duration by rapid trip scheme and accurate estimation of the fault location. In this paper, we analyze the load characteristics of each vehicle, perform the fault analysis of AC power supply network using AT current-ratio method. The result shows its usefulness.

  • This paper deals with an improved fault location algorithm with compensation ground capacitance through distributed parameter for a long parallel T/L. For the purpose of fault locating algorithm non-influenced by source impedance and fault resistance, the loop method was used in the system modeling analysis. This algorithm uses a positive and negative sequence of the fault current for high accuracy of fault locating calculation. Power system model of 160km and 300km long parallel T/L was simulated using EMTP software. To evaluate of the proposed algorithm, we used the several different cases 64 sampled data per cycle. The test results show that the proposed algorithm was minimized the error factor and speed of fault location estimation.

  • This paper proposed an high-speed superconducting fault current limiter (H-SFCL). The proposed H-SFCL functioned the initial fault current could be covered by the SFCL and the continued fault current after the one-cycle from fault occurrence could be controlled current-limiting-element of the normal conduction. To investigate the operation characteristics of the H-SFCL, a simulation power system was constructed, and a single line-to-ground fault was occurred. As a result, the H-SFCL limited the fault current by more than about 70%, and it was confirmed that the electric power burden was reduced compared to the SFCL that consisted only of superconductors.

  • This paper presents a distance relaying algorithm for phase-to-ground faults in transmission lines under Multi-Agent protection environment. In normal condition, a distance relay agent stores the latest states, e.g., voltage of source side, voltage of the opposite side and the loading conditions, etc., through communication between the agents. Once a fault occurs, the relay calculates the fault location using the knowledge about the states just before the fault happens. This stand-alone operation is to improve reliability under the fault condition at which the accuracy or time required for communication may not be guaranteed. The mathematical expression of fault location is derived through loop analysis, before hand, in the manner that both fault current from the opposite end and fault resistance are included implicitly so that their effects are minimized. The suggested algorithm is applied to a typical transmission system with two power sources on both ends to show its effectiveness.

  • This study utilizes large-scale shake table test to investigate the seismic performance of an isolated bridge with lead rubber bearings crossing an active fault. Two transverse restraining systems with and without shear keys are tested by applying spatially varying ground motions. It is shown that the near-fault span exhibits larger bearing displacement than the crossing-fault span. Bridge piers away from the fault rupture are more vulnerable than those adjacent to the fault rupture by attracting more seismic demand. It is also verified that the shear keys are effective in restraining the bearing displacement on the near-fault span, particularly under the large permanent ground displacement.

  • An excessive ground displacement occurs with excavating tunnel in a fault zone because the fault has properties of soft ground in generally. It may have had a bad influence to adjacent structure. So, rapid reduction of ground strength by groundwater inflow should be prevented. It must be established for an impervious and reinforcing effect of ground to ensure a tunnel stability. The ground settlement and reinforcing effects were estimated by numerical analyses on tunnel through 570 m sector in Yangsan fault zone of Keongbu high-speed railway. Settlements evaluated by numerical analysis is similar to those calculated by using equation of Loganathan & Poulo. It was shown that reliable estimate of ground settlement by applying a prediction equation is possible. Applicability of adopted tunnel reinforcement method in fault zone was investigated by results of pilot construction and numerical analysis. Results from this study indicate that the adopted reinforcement method make tunnel displacements and member stresses restrain in design criteria.

  • Ground differential relay is used to provide fast, sensitive, and selective protection for the wye connected and grounded electrical power equipment such as generators, power transformers, and grounding transformers. The ground differential protection only protects the ground faults within the protection zone, so that it can't protect the line-to-line fault. This paper proposes the algorithm to provide the protection for the line-to-line fault through the ground differential protection. The proposed algorithm detects the line-to-line fault of transformer using the comparison between the positive and the negative current, when the ground differential relay dose not operate. The performance of the algorithm is verified using a PSCAD/EMTDC simulator under various case studies.
