  • Ground source heat pump (GSHP) systems are actively introduced as cooling and heating conditioning systems of buildings due to annual stable performance and easily maintenance. However, ground temperature imbalance is occurred when the GSHP is used for a long period. Therefore, in this study, we proposed the operation method of the system that considered the recovery time of heat source temperature. The entering water temperature (EWT) and heat exchange rate (HER) were comparatively analyzed according to the continuous and intermittent operation. Furthermore, the underground thermal environment was evaluated by numerical analysis model. As the result, the intermittent operation was a maximum of 12.3% higher HER during the heating period than the continuous operation. In addition, the overall ground heat source temperature at the intermittent operation was higher than it at the continuous operation.

  • This present study is to evaluate the cooling performance of a water-to-refrigerant ground source heat pump system(GSHP) under actually operating condition. 1 unit is selected among 10 units of the GSHP in the building to analyze the performance. The average cooling COP of the GSHP at the part load of 64% is 8.2, overall system COP is 6.19. In the GSHP system, the cooling temperature of the condenser is lower compared to the air source heat pump system. Conclusively, the cooling performance of the GSHP is higher than the air source heat pump system by 80%.

  • The objective of this study is to improve the performance of a hybrid ground source heat pump (HGSHP) by optimizing the flow distribution ratio of secondary fluid flow rate between a ground loop and a supplemental loop. Initially, a conventional ground source heat pump (GSHP) was tested to determine an optimum flow rate of the secondary fluid. Based on the selected optimum value, the HGSHP was also tested by varying the flow distribution ratio of the secondary fluid flow rate between the ground loop and the supplemental loop, such as 9:1, 7:3, 5:5, and 3:7. The results showed that the optimum flow distribution ratio of the secondary fluid flow rate was 7:3. The COP of the HGSHP was improved by 19% over the GSHP at a flow distribution ratio of 7:3 and an entering water temperature of $40^{\circ}C$.

  • Performance evaluation and economic estimation were conducted on the water to water GSHP (Ground Source Heat Pump) installed in existing building. Ground heat exchanger was a closed vertical loop type and sized to be 5 boreholes and 100m depth per borehole. Operation efficiency of the system shows that, COP increased from 3.0 to 4.2 with entering water temperature in heating operation, however, COP decreased from 5.0 to 3.7 in cooling operation. Economic estimation was analyzed by LCC (Life Cycle Cost) method and it showed that GSHP could save 68% of cost compare to the conventional oil source. Thus, despite of the large amount of initial cost, GSHP has a economic advantage to the other energy sources.

  • To purpose of this research is to develop the numerical model for simulating performance of ground heat exchanger with high prediction accuracy. This paper describes the development of a numerical model that simulates the heat transfer between ground and circulation water in ground heat exchanger. Furthermore, we propose the estimating technique of soil properties, such as thermal conductivity, heat capacity and hydraulic conductivity, based on ground investigation. Comparison between experiment and numerical analysis based on the model developed above was conducted under the condition of the experiment in 2004. The result of analysis agreed well with the experimental result.

  • Ground Source Heat Pump (GSHP) systems utilize geothermal energy as a thermal source or sink, for heating, cooling and domestic hot water. It is well known that GSHP is environmentally friendly, and saves energy dramatically. For this reason, many investigative researches have been conducted on commercial and governmental buildings. However, studies on residential GSHP are few, because of the small capacity and cost. In this study, we experimented with the characteristic performance of heating, cooling and seasonal performance factor for a residential GSHP system, which consisted of two 180 m deep u-tube ground heat exchangers, a heat pump and measurement instruments. The installed capacity of the heat pump was 5RT, and the conditioning area was $62.23m^2$. From the experimental results, the cooling COP of the heat pump was 4.13, and the system COP was 3.51, while the CSPF was 3.32. On the other hand, the heating COP of the heat pump was 3.87, and the system COP was 3.39, while the HSPF was 3.39. Also, in-situ cooling COP and capacity were 93.7% and 96.4% compared with the EWT certification data, respectively, and that of heating were 98.3% and 95.7%, respectively.

  • This paper provides an economic analysis of a new geothermal heat pump system that reuses condenser waste heat from a Ground Source Heat Pump ($GSHP_{ch}$) to provide energy for a hot water Ground Source heat pump ($GSHP_{hw}$). After conducting feasibility tests using GLD and TRNSYS simulations, the proposed system was effectively installed and thoroughly tested. We observe that 1) the Coefficient of Performance (COP) of the $GSHP_{hw}$ and the $GSHP_{ch}$ during cooling mode improves by up to 62% and 7%, respectively; 2) the number of bore holes can be reduced by two; and 3) the hot water supply temperature of the $GSHP_{hw}$ increases by up to $60^{\circ}C$. We further conclude that 1) the reduction of two bore holes can save approximately ten million Won from the initial cost investment; and 2) the increased COP of the $GSHP_{hw}$ can save approximately one million Won in annual electricity costs.

  • Ground-coupled heat pump (GCHP) systems have become an efficient alternative to conventional cooling and heating methods due to their higher energy using efficiency. Although some experimental and simulation works related to performance analysis of GCHP systems for commercial buildings have been done, relatively little has been reported on the performance evaluation of GCHP systems for school buildings. The purpose of this simulation study is to evaluate the performance of a hypothetical GCHP system for a school building in Seoul. We collected various data of building specifications and construction materials for the building and then modeled to calculate hourly building loads with SketchuUp and TRNSYS V17. In addition, we used GLD (Ground Loop Design) V2016, a GCHP system design and simulation software, to design the GCHP system for the building and to simulate temperature of circulating water in ground heat exchanger. The variation of entering source temperature (EST) into the system was calculated with different prediction time and then each result was compared. For 20 years of prediction time, EST for baseline design (Case A) based on the hourly simulation results were outranged from the design criteria.

  • Rising in important of alternative energy due to the recenfly high oil price and environment problem. Application of alternative energy has become higher than before. In this study, facility test of Geothermal energy to bankfiltration was examined appliying changwon pumping well. Initial installation cost was efficiently saved by connecting a heat pump system to pumping well in changwon bankfiltration site. A falling-off in efficiency of heat pump was free due to the bankfiltration that is rare for the temperature fluctuation. Therefore, Heat soure as bankfiltration system solve the existing facilities problems of geothermal heat pump system.

  • It is important to control the amount of supply water flow rate at all kinds of HVAC systems in order to maintain IAQ and energy efficiency. The most of buildings installed geothermal heat pumps is using fixed water flow rate in spite of the excellent performance of geothermal heat pumps. Especially when the air-conditioning load is low, the flow rate control may be possible to save energy to operate. However, it is effective to apply the variable flow control system in order to reduce energy consumption. Therefore, the purpose of this study, change a water flow rate and improve the whole performance of the geothermal heat pump. Geothermal heat pump system is modeled after the selection of the applied building, by setting the flow rate control to be analyzed through a simulation of performance evaluation. Building energy saving according to the flow rate of the ground circulating water analyze quantitatively and to investigate the importance of the flow control.
