Numerical Analysis of the Ground Penetrating Radar's Return Signal for Mine Detection at Various Frequencies and Soil Conditions (다양한 주파수 및 토양 조건에서 지뢰 탐지용 지표투과레이더 수신신호의 수치해석)

  • Return signals of a ground penetrating radar(GPR) for mine detection at various frequencies and soil moisture contents are analyzed in this paper. We first compute the dielectric constant, conductivity and attenuation loss based on clay loam which is Korea standard soil. The mine-detection images of GPR at various frequencies are also obtained using the finite-difference time-domain(FDTD) technique. Then, the signal-to-clutter ratio(SCR) and received power of the radar are studied. It is shown that the variable frequency channels are suitable for a GPR to detect landmines at various soil conditions.

  • This paper proposes an EMC-aware PCB design method to reduce electromagnetic emission, where trace length and teturn path of critical signal are shortened by changing chip location and trace layout on the PCB, while additional filters or decoupling capacitors are not required. In the proposed method, signal velocity is calculated for various signals on the PCB. Critical signal with the fastest signal velocity is determined and its return path is shortened as much as possible by placing chip location and trace routing first. Return path of critical signal should be carefully designed not to have discontinuity. Power plane and ground plane should be carefully designed not to be divided, since these planes are the reference of return path. The proposed method was applied to automotive directional Bluetooth speaker which failed to pass CISPR 32 and CISPR 25 EMC tests. Its PCB was redesigned based on the proposed method and it easily passed the EMC tests. The proposed method is useful to EMC-sensitive electronic equipments.

  • This paper describes a time-spatial domain model for simulating raw data acquisition of space-borne SAR system. The position, velocity and attitude information of the platform at a certain time instance is used for deriving sensor-target model. Ground target is modelled by a set of point scatters with reflectivity and two-dimensional ground coordinates. The signal received by SAR is calculated for each slow and fast time instance by integrating the reflectivity and phase values from all target point scatters. Different from frequency domain simulation algorithms, the proposed time domain algorithm can provide fully physical modelling of SAR raw data simulation without any assumptions or approximations.

  • Ground echo is radar return from stationary targets such as buildings and trees. Wind vectors from the wind profile radar in Gangneung are affected by ground echoes due to the complex mountainous terrain located to the west and the south. These ground echoes make a spurious peak close to the direct current (DC) line signal in Doppler spectra. Wind vectors polluted by ground clutters were determined from spectra of oblique beams. After eliminated the terrain echoes, the accuracy of wind vector compared with radiosonde was improved about 68.4% and its relative coefficient was increased from 0.58 to 0.97.

  • ATC facility manipulates ground-on-board information, which transmits speed limit, varying as wayside environments - safety facility, track gradient, inclination, bridge and tunnel and other factors, installed for safe operation of trains on wayside. Efficientiation and automatification of operation and maintenance is being realized, by measuring if there are any erroneous information, using a measuring car. In this paper, we study in priority the methods for measuring accurately distinctive properties of internal malfunctions of track circuits, the performance decrease of condensers, and the unbalance of return cables, which are actually required for functionality improvement of high-speed line signal measure facilities, by measuring the unbalance of return current given because of damaged factors of external track circuits.

  • Localization of lightning strike point (LSP) in the forest is modeled to mitigate the forest fire damage. Though forest fire ignited by lightning rarely happens, its damage on the forest is grievousness. Therefore, predicting accurate location of LSP becomes crucial in order to control the forest fire. In this paper, we proposed a new hybrid localization algorithm by combining the received signal strength (RSS) and the received signal strength ratio (RSSR) to improve the accuracy by mitigating the environmental effect of lightning strike location in the forest. The proposed hybrid algorithm employs antenna theory (AT) model of cloud-to-ground (CG) return stroke lightning channel to forecast the location of the lightning strike. The obtained results show that the proposed hybrid algorithm achieves better location accuracy compared to the existing RSS method for predicting the lightning strike location considering additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) environment.

Analysis of Clutter Effects in a Weather Radar (기상 레이다에서의 클러터 영향 분석)

  • A weather radar estimates Doppler frequency and width of Doppler spectrum from the received weather signal which represents the return echoes from rain or dust particles in a corresponding area. These estimates are very important parameters since they are directly related to precipitation, wind velocity and degree of turbulence. Therefore, these estimated values should be highly reliable to obtain accurate weather information. However, the echoes of a weather radar include both the weather signal and the clutter which occurred from ground reflection or moving objects, etc. The existence of the clutter in the echoes may cause serious errors in the estimation of weather-related parameters. Therefore, in this paper, models are developed to represent the weather signal and the clutter for the purpose of analyzing estimation errors caused by the strong clutter echoes. Using these models, various return echoes according to the weather signal and clutter power are simulated to analyze the effects of the clutter.

  • An airborne radar performance can be sensitive to the variation of the Doppler center frequency and the spectral spread of the ground clutter return due to the radar platform moving and aspect angle of the scanning beam to the target. In this paper, for the performance test of the airborne pulsed Doppler radar system developed, the high-speed radar data acquisition system is implemented for acquiring the raw radar signal in real-time. Based on the various test scenarios from airborne-platform to the moving platform, the various radar target and clutter signals are collected and their spectrum is analyzed for the verification of the radar performance in the real-time flight test environments.

  • Electrical Railroads provide electric power, which can operate vehicles, via feeder wires. And the supplied current returns to the transformer substation through lines and ground net. The return current, related to signal, power and power line, and track circuit systems, is one of the most important component in the electric railway. Therefore, to prevent system faults and breakdown according to unbalance and overcurrent of the return current, various and detailed analyses for the return current are needed. In the paper, we present measurement and analysis manners in real environment and evaluate its safety. For analysis, we utilize the measured values of return currents measured in track circuits in electric railway. we expect that this research plays a key role to the related fields.
