The micropile has been mainly used under the concept of supplementing structural support or reinforcing soft ground. For the micropiled-raft system which uses a micropile and a raft in combination in particular, it is generally considered as ground reinforcement rather than foundation components considering the bearing capacity of the micropile in many cases. In this study, the bearing capacity mechanism of the micropiled-raft system is investigated through a physical model test and numerical method. The numerical results have shown that not only the slender-pile-effect of the micropile, but also the ground reinforcement effect, increase the bearing capacity considerably. The bearing capacity formula of the micropiled-raft system is derived based on the failure mechanism obtained through model tests. The formula is verified and proposed as a design chart.
In this study, to investigate the strength enhancement and stress transfer effect of the inflatable chemicals used in the recovery of soft ground or partial settlement, the dilatant solution was prepared and classified by measuring the density and the earth pressure in the sand ground. The inflation reinforcing agent was prepared by injecting into a separate impervious vacuum sheet by dividing into a relatively high expansion group and a low expansion group, and a cementation experiment was performed in the lower part of the homogeneously formed model ground. As a result, reinforcing effect was shown up to about 15cm above the expansion reinforcement, and the soil pressure showed a compaction tendency similar to the concentrated load of $1.150{\sim}11.298t/m^2$.

A ground motion resulting from the destructive earthquakes can subject reinforced concrete members to very large forces. The reinforced concrete shear walls are designed as earthquake-resistant members of building structure in order to prevent severe damage due to the ground motions. The current research activities on seismic behavior of reinforced concrete member under ground motions have been limited to the shaking table test or equivalent static cyclic test and the obtained results have been summarized and proposed for the seismic design retrofit of structural columns or shear walls. The present study predicted the seismic response and failure behavior of reinforced concrete shear wall subjected to base acceleration using the finite element method. A decrease in strength and stiffness, yielding of reinforcing bar, and repetition of crack closing and opening due to seismic load with cyclic nature are accompanied by the crack which is necessarily expected to take place in concrete member. In this study the nonlinear material models for concrete and reinforcing bar based on biaxial stress field and algorithm of dynamic analysis were combined to construct the analytical program using the finite element method. The analytical seismic response and failure behaviors of reinforced concrete shear wall subjected to several base accelerations were compared with reliable experimental result.
This paper deals with an Umbrealla Arch Reinforcement Method (UARM) in tunnelling. It is known that the mechanism of the reinforcement system is too complex to be simulated in existent finite element (FE) frameworks when considering its complex geometry of pipe arrangements and contribution of each component of the reinforcement to reinforcing effect. In this study a 3-D elastoplastic FE procedure is, therefore, proposed by introducing homogenisation technique, which is used to define mathematically elastic as well as elastoplastic characteristics of a reinforced ground material as a composite. A number of practical suggestions are addressed considering staged constructions of tunnels. For illustrative purposes, a series of parametric studies are undertaken and anisotropic characteristics of the reinforced ground as well as effects of the reinforcement on tunnel convergences are investigated. It is found that the reinforced ground material defined in homogenisation framework has its mechanical characteristics reasonably representing inherent geometrical and quantitative characteristics of each of constituents.

The super-speed tube train was introduced to increase the speed of ground transportation. It levitates magnetically and runs in a partial vacuum tube, which significantly reduces air resistance. However, strong magnetic force sufficient to propel the massive train can affect the infrastructure. The induced eddy current produces joule heat, and raises the inside temperature of the girder, which might lead to electrochemical corrosion on the girder, thereby weakening its durability. In this paper, the authors analyzed the magnetic flux and induced eddy current in the reinforced concrete girder by using three-dimensional FEM, particularly by varying the number of reinforcing steels of the upper flange of the girder to the condition of almost the same flexural strength and reinforcing steel amount.

In order to apply the Limit Equilibrium Method generally used for the slope stability analysis to the vertical excavation walls reinforced by soil-nailing, in this study, the Limit Equilibrium Method for the temporary shoring facilities reinforced by soil-nailing was proposed, which is based on the stability for the horizontal displacement. In this study, the relation of the internal friction angles of the ground and the vertical excavation depths was arranged, which is satisfying the stability on the horizontal displacement by using the verification of the Limit Equilibrium Method. And then, the rational reinforcing length of soil-nailing was proposed for the critical areas. In addition, the modified safety ratio satisfying the stability on the horizontal displacement was proposed, when the Limit Equilibrium Method was applied to the vertical excavation walls reinforced by soil-nailing.
One of the most popular pre-reinforcement methods of tunnel heading in cohesionless soils would be the fore-polling of grouted pipes, known as RPUM (reinforced protective umbrella method) or UAM (umbrella arch method). This technique allows safe excavation even in poor ground conditions by creating longitudinal arch parallel to the tunnel axis as the tunnel advances. Some previous studies on the reinforcing effects have been performed using numerical methods and/or laboratory-based small scale model tests. The complexity of boundary conditions imposes difficulties in representing the tunnelling procedure in laboratory tests and theoretical approaches. Full-scale study to identify reinforcing effects of the tunnel heading has rarely been carried out so far. In this study, a large scale model testing for a tunnel in granular soils was performed. Reinforcing patterns considered are four cases, Non-Reinforced, Crown-Reinforced, Crown & Face-Reinforced, and Face-Reinforced. The behavior of ground and pipes as reinforcing member were fully measured as the surcharge pressure applied. The influences of reinforcing pattern, pipe length, and face reinforcement were investigated in terms of stress and displacement. It is revealed that only the Face-Reinforced has decreased sufficiently both vertical settlement in tunnel heading and horizontal displacement on the face. Vertical stresses along the tunnel axis were concentrated in tunnel heading from the test results, so the heading should be reinforced before tunnel advancing. Most of maximum axial forces and bending moments for Crown-reinforced were measured at 0.75D from the face. Also it should be recommended that the minimum length of the pipe is more than l.0D for crown reinforcement.

Recently, it is difficult to find a good soil ground due to the shortage of land for new construction site. Because of this situation, the geosynthetics are commonly used for reinforcing the substructure of the soil ground, and hence improving the bearing capacity and reducing the settlement. The geocell is one of geosynthetics and is the advanced system of geogrid. It is the way to increase earth strength and bearing capacity by using three dimension type of geocomposite. In this paper, the Horizontal permeability was determined with considering various geocell shapes. The permeability test was performed by following method of ASTM D4716(87) and potential filling material for geocell was used. The bearing capacity mechanism which enhances the soil ground with evenly maintaining the degree of the compaction was also analyzed for geocell reinforced ground.

Recently construction work in Korea, demands of favorable condition ground had been increased with industrialization acceleration and economic growth. However, because of limited land space, it was so hard to ensure favorable condition grounds that construction work proceeds until soft ground area on plans of road, railroad and industrial complex. In this case, soft ground improvement was required such as a stone column method. Stone column method, making a compaction pile using crushed stone, is a soft ground improvement method. However, stone column method is difficult to apply to the ground which is not mobilized enough lateral confine pressure because no bulging failure resistance. Hence, in present study, evaluates the stone columns reinforced by geogrid for settlement reduction and wide range of application of stone columns. Triaxial compression tests were conducted for evaluation which is about behavior characteristics of stone column on replacement rate. Then, 3-dimensional numerical analysis were conducted for application of stone column reinforced by geogrid as evaluate behavior characteristics and settlement reduction effect of stone column reinforced by geogrid on reinforcing depth change of geogrid.

In this study, the mechanical behavior of very soft ground that is reinforced on the surface has been investigated with the aid of a series of numerical analyses. Key material properties of each dredged soft ground, reinforcement and backfill sand mat have been parametrically estimated in the numerical analysis. Along with the result of the study previously performed, a series of in-situ loading conditions and settlement exerted by surface reinforcing operation by construction vehicles has been numerically simulated. These result have been used to evaluate the limit bearing capacity for the unreinforced and reinforced soft ground. Also, the results of the numerical analysis obtained in this research were compared with Yamanouchi's empirical correlation for the limit bearing capacity. Engineering charts listed in this paper for estimating the limit bearing capacity provide field engineers with preliminary design tool for surface reinforcement of very soft ground.
