  • Excessive groundwater discharge by tunneling and tunnel operation can lead to groundwater exhaustion and ground subsidence. Therefore, it is very important to evaluate environmental impact and to establish mitigation measures of the impact related to tunnel excavation based on hydrogeological and modeling approaches. This study examined the depletion of surface reservoirs and valley water due to tunnel excavation through field survey, water quality analysis, tracer test, and groundwater modeling. As a result of field water quality test, the concentration of chemical constituents in groundwater discharge into the tunnel is slightly higher than that of valley water. By the result of laboratory water analysis, both valley water and the groundwater belong to $Ca^{2+}+HCO_3{^-}$ type. Tracer test that was conducted between the valley at the injection point and the tunnel, indicates valley water infiltration into the ground and flowing out to the tunnel, with maximum electrical conductance changes of $70{\mu}S/cm$ in the first test and of $40{\mu}S/cm$ in the second test. By groundwater modeling, the groundwater discharge rate into the tunnel during tunnel construction is estimated as $4,942m^3/day$ and groundwater level recovers in 3 years from the tunnel completion. As a result of particle tracking modeling, the nearest particle reaches the tunnel after 6 hours and the farthest particle reaches the tunnel after 9 hours, similarly to the case of the field trace test.

  • The most serious problem in oil stockpiles with artificial underground cavern is maintaining the stability of ground water system. In order to understand the ground water system around K-1 site, we determined the regional flow direction and level distribution of groundwater, and investigated the major geologic factors influencing their flow system. Reactivated surface along the contact between granite and gneiss, and fractures and faults along the long acidic dyke may contribute as important pathways for groundwater flow. Within K-1 site, groundwater level fluctuation is closely related to the rainfall events and injection from surface or influx water. In this project, the effect of groundwater pumping from the southern wells was examined. Based on equations relating water level drawdown to pumping rate at those wells, their pumped outflow of groundwater ranged from $80\;m^3$/day to less than $250\;m^3$/day. The modeling results with MODFLOW imply that the previous groundwater pumping at distance of 1.2 km may not affect the groundwater level variations of the K-1 site. However, continuous pumping work at quantity over $250\;m^3$/day in this area will be able to affect the groundwater system of the K-1 site, particularly along the acidic dyke.

  • Cement-based reinforcement materials, which are representative slope reinforcement materials, can cause contamination of ground and groundwater when ground injection or surface application is applied. Accordingly, slope reinforcement materials using eco-friendly biopolymers are attracting attention as a means of replacing existing materials, but the biopolymers currently used are easily dissolved when exposed to groundwater or rainfall environments, reducing strength. In order to solve this problem, the cross-linking of protein between sodium casein and Transglutaminase (TGase, C20H16N4O2S2) was used to increase the water resistance of biopolymers, and a rainfall slope test was conducted to evaluate their usability and applicability as a slope reinforcing material. In the case of reinforcement with only sodium casein, the precipitation dissolved sodium casein, and the slope was completely destroyed in 1 hour. On the other hand, it was observed that the slope reinforced by adding a small amount of TGase (0.5%) do not collapse even after 80 hours of rainfall duration due to increased water resistance. Strength and water resistance increases due to the addition of a small amount of TGase, and its applicability as an eco-friendly reinforcement is confirmed.

  • Pressure grouting is a common technique in geotechnical engineering to increase the stiffness and strength of the ground mass and to fill boreholes or void space in a tunnel lining and so on. Recently, the pressure grouting has been applied to a soil-nailing system which is widely used to improve slope stability. The soil-nailing design has been empirically performed in most geotechnical applications because the interaction between pressurized grouting paste and the adjacent ground mass is complicated and difficult to analyze. The purpose of this study is to analyze the increase of pullout resistance induced by pressurized grouting with the aid of performing laboratory model tests and field tests. In this paper, two main causes of pullout resistance increases induced by pressurized grouting were verified: the increase of mean normal stress and the increase of coefficient of pullout friction. From laboratory tests, it was found that dilatancy angle could be estimated by modified cavity expansion theory using the measured wall displacements. The radial displacement increases with dilatancy angle decrease and the dilatancy angle increases with injection pressure increase. The measured pullout resistance obtained from field tests is in good agreement with the estimated one from the modified cavity expansion theory.

  • In this study, the shear wave velocity of the ground was measured using Flat TDR, and the precision analysis of the measured value and the verification of field applicability were performed. The shear wave velocity measurement value was derived in the field using the piezo-stack combined in the Flat TDR. analyzed. As a result of the experiment, the average value of the change in shear wave speed at the time of grout material injection was 10.15 m/s at the beginning of age, and the average value of the change in shear wave speed after the 7th to 14th days was 65.99 m/s, showing a tendency to increase with age. Also, it was found that dry density and shear wave speed increased as the water content increased on the dry side, and that the dry density and shear wave rate decreased as the water content increased on the wet side as the water content increased. The shear modulus value derived from the field test was confirmed to be a minimum of 17.36 MPa and a maximum of 28.13 MPa, confirming a measurement value similar to the reference value. Through this, it can be seen that the measured value of the shear modulus using Flat TDR is reliable data, and it can be determined that the compaction management of the site can be effectively managed in the future.

  • The differential settlement on ordinary concrete buildings and paved roads are often occurred and which caused the failure of structure. The grouting method can be used for correcting the settlement of the structure. However, the grouting method has a disadvantage like that it takes a long time period to get a desired strength, and it is not a continuous in the phase of reinforced effect. In this paper, as an injecting material called GPCON to complement disadvantage, it is estimated about the characteristic that has a high-density expansion. With the changing of ground conditions and amount of injection, the change of physical strength on compression, the stability against chemical material are studied through the filming of SEM. The physical strength with compression is developed to high strength due to mixing with other material. It is not react with most of the material on chemical conditions except the component of alcohol. Through the SEM test. it is confirmed that the strength of material was increased as formation is being densified.

  • Chemical grouting method is mainly used for construction of dams and reservoirs, stabilization and reinforcement of slopes, reinforcement of soft grounds such as embankments, dredging and landfills, the order of earthquake response method, and the reinforcement of structures. Recently, it is widely applied in construction sites such as highways, airfields, high-speed railways, subsea facilities, port construction works, tunnels, and subway works. As such, the demand for grouting continues to increase. The development of the grouting method was focused on increasing the strength of the ground, and the development of the chemical additives, the injection device, and the stirring device were mainly performed. But ordinary portland cement used for grouting is a product that consumes natural resources such as limestone, generates a large amount of greenhouse gases, consumes a large amount of energy sources, and it is time to develop products and new methods to replace them. In this study, Ordinary Portland Cement and New Grouting Binder (circulating fluidized bed boiler fly and blast furnace slag) were compared and analyzed by the following test. Homo-gel strength and homo-gel time, water quality analysis of the water used and soil contamination process tests of homo-gel samples were performed. In the case of NGB, when Using water is used as the reservoir water, the strength measured smaller than that of the other water. However, it shows about 2.5 times greater than the homo-gel compressive strength applied to OPC (7-day, reservoir water), so there is no problem with water quality when applied.

  • Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency(JAXA) has been conducting research and development of the Scramjet engines and their derivative combined cycle engines as hypersonic propulsion system for space access. Its history will be introduced first, and its recent advances, focusing on the engine performance progress, will follow. Finally, future plans for a flight test of scramjet and ground test of combined cycle engine will be introduced. Two types of test facilities for testing those hypersonic engines. namely, the 'Ramjet Engine Test Facility (RJTF)' and the 'High Enthalpy Shock Tunnel (HIEST)' were designed and fabricated during 1988 through 1996. These facilities can test engines under simulated flight Mach numbers up to 8 for the former, whereas beyond 8 for the latter, respectively. Several types of hydrogen-fueled scramjet engines have been designed, fabricated and tested under flight conditions of Mach 4, 6 and 8 in the RJTF since 1996. Initial test results showed that the thrust was insufficient because of occurrence of flow separation caused by combustion in the engines. These difficulty was later eliminated by boundary-layer bleeding and staged fuel injection. Their results were compared with theory to quantify achieved engine performances. The performances with regards to combustion, net thrust are discussed. We have reached the stage where positive net thrust can be attained for all the test coditions. Results of these engine tests will be discussed. We are also intensively attempting the improvement of thrust performance at high speed condition of Mach 8 to 15 in High Enthalpy Shock Tunnel (HIEST). Critical issues for this purposemay be air/fuel mixing enhancement, and temperature control of combustion gas to avoid thermal dissociation. To overcome these issues we developed the Hypermixier engine which applies stream-wise vortices for mixing enhancement, and the M12-engines which optimizes combustor entrance temperature. Moreover, we are going to conduct the flight experiment of the Hypermixer engine by utilizing flight test infrastructure (HyShot) provided by the University of Queensland in fall of 2005 for comparison with the HIEST result. The plan of the flight experiment is also presented.

  • The amount of dredging clay will be greatly increased by the eco-rive project and port development in Korea. Geotechnical engineers have thrown their efforts into the new ways for effective re-uses of the dredging clay such as the material for reclamation, and so on. However, very high initial water content and low strength causes unexpected difficulties in the aspect of trafficablility or time for consolidation. Therefore, the injection of cement stabilizer is used as one of ways to improve reclaimed ground. However, it also makes an argument by heavy metal from cement stabilizer. In this paper constant rate of strain consolidation test and normal consolidation test were performed to investigate behavior characteristics of the consolidation about soil-cement include lean mixed cement to reduce the environmental loads by the cement. The experimental results of consolidation characteristics about soil-cement include lean mixed cement influenced by mixing ratio. Especially it was observed that mixing ratio of 4%~6% leads not only the reduction of consolidation settlement, but time for consolidation.
