  • Shaking table tests were peformed to evaluate the subgrade reaction of ground according to the build-up of pore water pressure. Model pile was installed in the sand ground. The acceleration of the model ground, the pore water pressure build-up and displacement of pile were recorded by measuring devices. Subgrade reaction approach based on Winker soil model was applied to obtain the modulus of the horizontal subgrade reaction. The results of analysis show that the reduction factor of the subgrade reaction due to pore pressure increase is about 1 and the horizontal subgrade reaction of liquefied ground is not influenced by the stiffness of pile, a ground acceleration and the intial ground density.

  • This study aims at the development of computer program for the deformation analysis of soft ground, and using this computer program, study the constraint effect of deformation heaving, lateral displacement of the soft ground reinforced with improvement of soft ground up to hard strata, under intact state(natural). The following results are obtained. 1. Improvement of soft ground to the hard strata works well against the settlement of neighboring ground. 2. the larger the rigidity or width of improvement of layer to hard strata is, the less settlement occurs. 3. Improvement of soft ground to the hard strata is of no use.

  • In this paper, roll behavior of three planar half car models are compared. The first model is a simple model whose contact point between a wheel and the ground is assumed to be fixed with a revolute joint. The second model is a modified model of the fIrst model, whose wheel tread width can vary. In this model, the instant center of a wheel with respect to the ground, which is crucial to find the roll center, is assumed to be at the contact point of a wheel and the ground. The last model uses the pole of a wheel with respect to the ground for small displacement as the instant center of a wheel with respect to the ground. Loci of the center of gravity point, the fixed and the moving centrodes which are traces of roll center position in the ground and the body frame respectively, wheel contact points, and instant centers of a wheel with respect to the ground are calculated.

  • Most firming agent used in Korea is cement-firming agent. Cement-firming agent absorb water for combination, and then it makes ettringite. Through this chemical process, soft ground is firmed by cement-firming agent. Although most cement-firming agent used in Korea made from CSA, it relies on imports. Therefore, the development of soft ground firming agent using new materials is required. In this study, we suggested that EAF reduction slag not used for anything in the steel industry is available for material of soft ground firming agent. If EAF reduction slag is used in soft ground firming agent, it will be possible to solve the problem with treatment of slag and improvement of soft ground.

  • In the case of earthquake, it is necessary to install earthquake instruments and to measure the ground motions for stable gas supply and restoration in case of supply suspension. Because each point in the site of the gas facilities has different characteristics of ground motion, it is recommended to measure at the point where the ground motion is representative. In this paper, ground motion analysis and noise pattern analysis are carried out to select suitable point for the installation of earthquake instruments and to set of dynamic range of sensors.

  • This paper presents the transient behaviors of grounding system impedance against lighting impulse currents. The dynamic characteristics of the deeply driven ground rod and grounding grid subjected to the impulse current with various rise time were investigated. It was found that the transient ground impedance strongly depends on the configuration and size of grounding electrodes and the shapes of impulse currents, and the inductance of grounding electrodes has a significant affect on the transient ground impedance of grounding system in the short time domain.

  • Lightning has a broad frequency spectrum from DC to a few MHz. Consequently, the high frequency performance of grounding systems for protection against lightning should be evaluated, with the distributed parameter circuit model in a uniform soil being used to simulate grounding impedances. This paper proposes a simulation method which applies the distributed parameter circuit model for the frequency-dependent impedance of vertically driven ground rods by considering multi-layered soil structures where ground rods are buried. The Matlab program was used to calculate the frequency-dependent ground impedances for two ground rods of different lengths. As a result, an increase of the length of ground rod is not always followed by a decrease of grounding impedance, at least at a high frequency. The results obtained using the newly proposed simulation method considering multi-layered soil structures are in good agreement with the measured results.

  • After the GBAS ground system installing at the airport, a GBAS ground and flight testing must be conducted to verify functionality and performance of the system. Since Korea has no experience of the GBAS ground system installation, GBAS test and evaluation methods have never been studied so far. Therefore this paper analyzes the test items and methods for the GBAS ground and flight testing based on ICAO documents, FAA flight inspection manual and testing reports of other countries. As a result of the analysis, this paper proposes the GBAS ground and flight testing items in korea, also describes the flight procedures for the GBAS flight testing.

  • Excavation usually induces considerable ground settlement in soft ground, which may result in damage of adjacent buildings. Generally, the settlement is predicted through elastic-plastic finite element method and empirical method with defects. In this paper, an analytical solution for predicting ground settlement induced by excavation is developed based on the definition of three basic modes of wall displacement: T mode, R mode and P model. A separation variable method is employed to solve the problem based on elastic theory. The solution is validated by comparing the results from the analytical method with the results from finite element method(FEM) and existing measured data. Good agreement is obtained. The results show that T mode and R mode will result in a downward-sloping ground settlement profile. The P mode will result in a concave-type ground settlement profile.

  • Although DC ground resistance is a good index of grounding performance for grounding electrodes, it does not reflect the grounding performance during transient state. Besides, impulse ground impedance, which is defined by a ratio of the peak value of transient ground potential rise to the peak value of impulse current, cannot be an absolute index due to its dependence on impulse current shape. In this paper, ground impedance characteristics of ground electrodes has been measured in frequency domain ranging from 1 Hz to hundreds of kHz. Equivalent circuit models and transfer function models of the ground rod have been identified from the measured values of ground impedance in frequency domain.
