  • The current study investigated the friction property of angle and width effect for micro-scale grooved crosshatch pattern on SKD11 steel surface against bearing steel using pin-on-disk type. The samples fabricated by photolithography process and then these are carry out the electrochemical etching process. We discuss the friction property due to the influence of a hatched-angle and a width of groove on contact surface. We could be explained the lubrication mechanism for a Stribeck curve. So It was found that the friction coefficient depend on an angle of the crosshatch on contact surface. It was thus verified that micro-scale crosshatch grooved pattern could affect the friction reduction. Also, it is play an important a width of groove to be improved the friction property. I was found that friction property has a relationship between a width and an angle for micro-grooved pattern.

  • Single-phase heat transfer performance and pressure drop for internally grooved tubes with angles were studied. Experiments were carried out in a counter flow heat exchanger with water as a working fluid. Two commercially available internally grooved tubes and smooth tube were tested. The internal diameter of the smooth tube was 16.5mm and the internal diameters of grooved tubes were 15.4mm, 14.9mm, 15.0mm, 16.7mm, respectively. Grooved angles in the tubes were $37^{\circ},\;43^{\circ},\;45^{\circ},\;50^{\circ}$, respectively. An experimental device to measure the friction factor and heat transfer coefficient was constructed. The experimental results were obtained for the fully developed turbulent flow of water in tube on the condition of uniform heat flux. As the increase of flow rate, Reynolds number, numbers of groove and grooved angle led to the increase of pressure drop. Also this paper showed that heat transfer rate increased with increasing numbers of groove and grooved angle. An empirical relation taken from this study represented most of the data within ${\pm}25%$.

  • The Reynolds equation, incorporating Elrods cavitation algorithm, is discretized on a rectangular grid in computational space through coordinate mapping in order to accurately analyze a herringbone grooved journal bearing of a spindle motor in a computer hard disk drive. The pressure distribution and cavitation area are determined by using the finite volume method. Predicted results are compared to experimental data of previous researchers. It was found that positive pressure is developed within the converging section of the bearing and that a cavity occurs in the diverging section. Cavitation has been neglected in the previous analysis of the herringbone grooved bearing. Load capacity and bearing torque are increased due to the increased of eccentricity and L/D and the decrease of the grooved width ratio. The maximum load capacity was found to occur at a groove angle of 30 degrees while bearing torque remains constant due to the variation of the groove angle. The cavitation region is significantly decreased with the inclusion of herringbone grooves. However, the region increases with the increase of the eccentricity, L/D, groove angle and the rotational speed and the decrease of the grooved width ratio.

  • This study is focused on the comparison of heat transfer performance of two thermosyphons having 60 straight and helical internal grooves. Distilled water has been used as working fluid. Liquid fill charge ratio defined by the ratio of working fluid volume to total internal volume of thermosyphon, the inclination angle and operating temperature were used as experimental parameters. The heat flux and heat transfer coefficient are estimated from experimental results. The conclusions of this study may be summarized as follows; Liquid fill charge ratio, inclination angle and geometric shape of grooves were very important factors for the operation of thermosyphon. The optimum liquid fill charge ratio for the best heat flux were $30\%$. The heat transfer performance of helically grooved tube was higher than that of straight grooved tube in low inclination angle (less than $30^{\circ}$), but the results were opposite in high inclination angle (more than $30^{\circ}$). As far as optimum inclination angle concerns, range of $25^{\circ}\~30^{\circ}$ for a helically grooved tube and about $40^{\circ}$ for a straight grooved tube are suggested angles for the best results.

  • Notably, laser surface patterning facilitates tribological applications under lubricated sliding contacts. Consequently, a special pattern that can reduce the coefficient of friction under contact is considered necessary for improved machine efficiency. However, inappropriate pattern designs produce higher friction coefficients and cannot reduce friction. In this study, we use cast iron pins as specimens to investigate their friction and wear characteristics. Moreover, we experimentally investigate the correlation between the friction reduction effect and the design of groove crosshatch patterns fabricated with various angles and widths. We conduct a friction test using a pin-on-disc type tribometer under grease lubrication to study the friction reduction effect of the specimens, and we observe that the average coefficient of friction changes with the crosshatch angle and width. The experiment reveals that grooved crosshatch specimens with a crosshatch angle of 135°maximize friction reduction. The coefficient of friction of the groove specimens with a width of 120 ㎛ is lower than that of the specimens with a width of 200?. The friction reduction effect of the width of the groove is attributed to the density of the groove pattern. Thus, grooved crosshatch patterns can be designed to maximize friction reduction, and the friction property of a grooved crosshatch pattern is found to be related to its width and angle.

  • Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of grooved abutments on abutment screw loosening. Materials and methods: This study was conducted to evaluate the abutment screw loosening after 6 months for 50 patients (51 implants) treated at the department of Prosthodontics in Yonsei University Dental Hospital from March, 2015 to July, 2015. A control group with non-grooved abutment consists of 30 implants, and an experimental group with grooved abutment consists of 21 implants. Astra, Straumann, Implantium, Osstem system were used in the study. The abutments with loose screws cases after a period of 6 months has been investigated, with two kinds of measurements: 1) measuring the additional rotational angle on abutment during placement with the same force, 2) measuring the PTV on bucco-cervical area of implant crown. All data collected has been analyzed by normality test followed by Mann-Whitney test using SPSS program. Results: No complications were reported after 6 months for the 51 implants. Abutment screw loose and crown fracture have not been seen in the study groups. The data collected from the two measurements showed no significant differences between the two groups with P-value 0.576 (average= control group: $7.35^{\circ}$, experimental group: $4.75^{\circ}$) for the additional rotational angle measurement and with P-value 0.767 for PTV. Conclusion: There are no significant differences between the grooved and non-grooved abutment in screw stability. However, further studies with long-term followups and larger group of patients is needed in order to investigate the effects of grooved abutment on screw stability.

  • A numerical analysis is undertaken to show the influence of bearing design parameters on the load capacity of air lubricated spiral grooved thrust bearing. The governing equation derived from the mass balance is solved by the finite difference method. Optimal values for various design parameters are obtained to maximize the load capacity. The design parameters are the groove angle, the groove width ratio, the groove height ratio, and the seal ratio.

  • Surface pattern of tribological applications is an attractive technology of engineered surface. Therefore, friction reduction is considered to be necessary for improved efficiency of machines. This study investigated the effect of friction property fur angles of micro-scale crosshatch grooved surface pattern on bearing steel flat mated with pin-on-disk. We obtain sample which can be fabricated by photolithography process. We discuss friction property depend on an angle of cross-hatch grooved pattern. We can verify the lubrication mechanism as a Stribeck curve, which has a relationship between the friction coefficient and a dimensionless parameter under the lubrication condition. It was found that the friction coefficient was related to angle of crosshatch on surface, even when surface pattern was the same density.
