  • Inherent dynamic interaction between flexible disk and workpiece creates partially non-flat surface profile. A flat zone was defined using minimum depth of engagement. Several key parameters were defined to explain the characteristics of the zone. Process conditions including disk rotation speed, initial depth of cut and feed speed were varied to produce product profile database. Correlation between key factors was examined to find the characteristic dependencies. Trends of key parameters were displayed and explained. Higher flat zone ratio was observed for lower depth of cut and higher disk rotation speed. Ratio of minimum depth of cut against target depth of cut increased for higher feed speed and disk rotation speed but was insensitive to the depth of cut variation. The process transition was visualized by continuously displaying instantaneous orientation of the deflected disk and the location of key parameters were clearly marked for comparison.

  • The present paper focuses on the fabrication of materials with higher thermal conductivity. Nanofluid is a novel transfer prepared by dispersing nanometer-sized solid particles in traditional heat transfer fluid to increase thermal conductivity and heat transfer performance. The purpose of this study is making the nano-size particle. The experiment of MWCNT and $Al_2O_3$ was carried out using a planetary ball mill at several rotation speeds: 200 ~ 400 rpm. The results were examined using scanning electron microscope(SEM). In the case of the MWCNT, it could be more grinding into the small particle in the dry condition and it confirm in the case of the $Al_2O_3$ to be more grinding into the small particle contrary to the MWCNT in the wet condition. In the mixture grinding result of MWCNT and $Al_2O_3$, the dry condition showed the good result in low rotation speed than the wet condition.

  • This paper reports on the research which investigates acoustic signals acquired in progressive compressing, hole blanking, shearing and burr compacting process. The work piece is the head pin of the electric connector, whose raw material is the preformed steel bar. An acoustic sensor was set on the bed of hydraulic press. Because the acquired signals include the dynamic characteristics generated for all the processes, it is required to investigate signal characteristics corresponding to unit process. The corresponding dynamic characteristics to the respective process were first studied by analyzing the signals respectively acquired from compressing, blanking and compacting process. The combined signals were then periodically analyzed from the grinding to the grinding in the sound frequency domain and in the ultrasonic wave. The frequency of around 9 kHz in the sound frequency domain was much correlated to the tool wear. The characteristic frequency in the acoustic emission domain between 100 kHz and 500 kHz was not only clearly observed right after tool grinding but its amplitude was also related to the wear. The frequency amplitudes of 160 kHz and 320 kHz were big enough to be classified by the noise. The noise amplitudes are getting bigger, and their energy was much bigger as coming to the next regrinding. The signal analysis was based on the real time data and its frequency spectrum by Fourier Transform. As a result, the acousto-ultrasonic signals were much related to the tool wear progression.

  • A proprietary device is adopted to break out the membrane of cell in the rigid polyurethane foam. As it is known, the membrane of cell is hardly tearing-off thoroughly in a mechanical way due to both its elastic characteristic and micro sized pores. In this study, a novel experimental approach is introduced to burst out all gases inside the cells of the rigid polyurethane foam by abrasively grinding micro-cells completely into fine powder. The biggest advantage of this approach is to be capable of releasing all gases out from the cell even in the micro pores. As clearly reflected from the repeatability, the accuracy of the result is highly improved and high confidence in the data sets as well. For the measurements of not only gas composition but partial pressure for each gas simultaneously as well, a precision gas mass spectrometer is used in-line directly to the abrasive grinding device. To control the starting point of the polyurethane foam, all samples were prepared on site in the laboratory. Manufactured time is one of the most critical factors in characterization of cell gas composition because it is known that one of gas composition, especially, carbon dioxide, is diffused out dramatically in a short period of time as soon as it is foamed.

  • This study has focused on the application of magnetic assisted polishing for ELID ground surface of aluminum oxide ceramics. Aluminum oxide ceramics has been widely used as advanced materials for electric, optic, mechanic, chemical usage and so on. In this study, ELID grinding and magnetic assisted polishing technology was adopted for high-effective manufacturing and high quality surface of ceramic parts. The characteristic of MAP machining have been evaluated by the value of surface roughness and surface profile before and after magnetic assisted polishing. As the results of experiments, the surface roughness after magnetic assisted polishing has shown a significant improvement and the surface roughness was more improved when the feed rate of tool became slow.

  • In this study, mechanical properties of waste ground rubber tire powder were investigated to evaluate the influence of pre-treatment process for recycling. The tensile test, fracture test and morphology observation were carried out using various kinds of waste ground tire powders, which were produced by grinding and devulcanization process, respectively. As a results, it was found that the produced rubber powder through grinding process increased its tensile strength and elongation with decreasing particle size because of decreasing surface area. Devulcanized rubber powder also increased its tensile strength and elongation by de-crosslink with sulfur. It could be also suggested that devulcanization treatment after grinding process was more efficient recycling process for both increasing tensile property and fracture elongation of waste ground rubber tire powders.

  • Hard turning offers many possible benefits over grinding such as lower equipment costs, shorter setup time, reduced process steps and better surface integrity. Despite the amount of research in this area, there exists no data in the intermittent hard turning. The objective of this paper is to investigate the effect of CBN tool materials and machinability to an intermittent hard turning. To this end, different CBN materials were tested to evaluate the tool wear and surface roughness in an intermittent hard turning. It is found that low-CBN-content tool is better than high-CBN-content tool. Then, we discussed a cutting force, vibration, and CBN tool wear mechanism from the hard turning.

  • Oyster shell is light weighted and its strength characteristic is similar to sand so we have reviewed to find its suitability of aggregate. Therefore we found fineness modulus and size distribution of oyster shell by grinding it with inverter cutter mill varying inverter speed and screening size. In our test, the fineness modulus has tendency of decrease in higher speed and tendency of increase in bigger diameter of screening size. 5~2.5mm, 2.5~1.2mm, 1.2~0.6mm, and below 0.6mm of oyster shell particle size could be used in further test for suitability of aggregate.

  • Energetically-modified material using reject fly ash was manufactured to investigate the effect of the material on strength characteristic of cement mortar. In order to modify reject fly ash, a vibration mill was used. after grinding process, the defects in the alignment of atom was checked using transmission electron microscope. It was found that the compressive strength values of 28 days-cured specimens using energetically-modified reject fly ash (ERFA) were higher than that of mortar with non-ground reject fly ash.
