  • Electrical discharge machining (EDM) is an attractive machining technique but it requires electrically conductive ceramic materials. In this study, Alumina matrix composites reinforced with CNTs were fabricated through CNT purification, mixing, compaction and spark plasma sintering (SPS) processes. $Al_2O_3$ nanocomposites with the different CNT concentrations were synthesized. The mechanical and electrical characteristics of $Al_2O_3$/CNTs composites were examined in order to apply the materials to the EDM process. In addition, micro-EDM using wire electrical discharge grinding (WEDG) was conducted under the various EDM parameters to investigate the machining characteristics of machined hole by Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope (FE-SEM). The results show that $Al_2O_3$/CNTs 10%Vol. was more suitable than the other materials because high conductivity and large discharge energy caused violent sparks resulting in bad machining accuracy and surface quality.

  • In this study, characteristics of Mongolian fly ash and the possibility of its use as a cement additive through grinding process were examined. Mongolian fly ash was larger than domestic fly ash and less spherical. The CaO content of Mongolian fly ash was higher than domestic fly ash and the other components were similar. After vibratory milling, the mean particle size of fly ash decreased to $7.9{\mu}m$ and the blaine increased. When milled fly ash was mixed with cement, it showed the best compressive strength value at 60 min. These strength values were higher than OPC at all curing times.

  • In this study, mechanical grinding using a planetary ball mill was performed under various conditions to evaluate its effect on the crystal structure of vanadium titanium magnetite (VTM) ore from the Kwain Mine in South Korea. The crystal structure of the activated product was also evaluated. Magnetite and ilmenite were identified as the main types of VTM ore used in the Kwain Mine, and the main types of gangue minerals were iron-based silicate minerals. According to the mechanical activation results, the crystallinity and crystal size decreased as the size of the grinding media (balls) decreased, and the amorphization of the sample/ball filling was significant as the amount of the sample was reduced. In addition, as the grinding speed and time increased, the crystal structure significantly changed, proving that these two parameters had a greater effect on the crystal structure than the ball size and sample/ball filling ratio.

  • This study investigated the effects of ball mill operation condition on the morphology of raw powders in the dry-type milling process using three types of ball mills traditional ball mill, stirred ball mill and planetary ball mill. Furthermore, since spherical powders offer the best combination of high hardness and high density, the optimum milling condition to produce sphere-shaped powders was studied. The applied rotation speed ranged from 200rpm (low rotation speed) to 700rpm (high rotation speed). The used ball size ranged from 1mm to 5mm. The metal powder morphology was studied using SEM, XRD and PSA. The aimed spherical powders could be obtained under the optimum experimental conditions: traditional ball mill(200rpm, 1mm ball), planetary ball mill (500rpm, 1mm ball) and also planetary ball mill (700rpm, 1 and 3 mm ball). The results show to the development of new material using spherical type copper powder/CNT composites for air-craft and automotive applications.

  • PURPOSE. Veneering porcelain might be delaminated from underlying zirconia-based ceramics. The aim of this study was the evaluation of the effect of different surface treatments and type of zirconia (white or colored) on shear bond strength (SBS) of zirconia core and its veneering porcelain. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Eighty zirconia disks (40 white and 40 colored; 10 mm in diameter and 4 mm thick) were treated with three different mechanical surface conditioning methods (Sandblasting with $110{\mu}m$ $Al_2O_3$ particle, grinding, sandblasting and liner application). One group had received no treatment. These disks were veneered with 3 mm thick and 5 mm diameter Cercon Ceram Kiss porcelain and SBS test was conducted (cross-head speed = 1 mm/min). Two and one way ANOVA, Tukey's HSD Past hoc, and T- test were selected to analyzed the data (${\alpha}=0.05$). RESULTS. In this study, the factor of different types of zirconia ceramics (P=.462) had no significant effect on SBS, but the factors of different surface modification techniques (P=.005) and interaction effect (P=.018) had a significant effect on SBS. Within colored zirconia group, there were no significant differences in mean SBS among the four surface treatment subgroups (P=0.183). Within white zirconia group, "Ground group" exhibited a significantly lower SBS value than "as milled" or control (P=0.001) and liner (P=.05) groups. CONCLUSION. Type of zirconia did not have any effect on bond strength between zirconia core and veneer ceramic. Surface treatment had different effects on the SBS of the different zirconia types and grinding dramatically decreased the SBS of white zirconia- porcelain.

  • A precision micro-positioning system with a high displacement resolution and wide motion range has been required for industrialized applications in variety fields. This paper discusses the design of a precision micro-rotation stage with flexure hinges. Proposed system is applied to grinding machine for micro parts. Rotational motion is generated with this system. For this systems having a full rotation motion with high precision, a dual servo system with a coarse stage and a fine stage is proposed.

  • The aim of this study was to develop a physical treatment method for obtaining iron concentrate with a grade higher than 60% from slag generated in the Waelz Kiln (WK) process. The size of the WK slag used in this work was several millimeters, with T-Fe and ZnO contents of 40.24% and 1.03%, respectively. The slag samples were pulverized in a laboratory rod mill for various grinding times, followed by a magnetic separation test under a low magnetic intensity of 0.05 T initially. The results showed that the highest iron grade was obtained from samples with a grinding time of 10 min. Additionally, for a grinding time of 20 min, the highest grade and recovery ratios were achieved at a magnetic intensity of 0.8 T. Based on these findings, the optimal physical treatment process proposed in this study resulted in iron concentrates with a grade of 61.34% and an enrichment ratio of 1.52.
