  • Three-level diode clamped multilevel inverter, generally known as neutral point clamped (NPC) inverter, has an inherent problem causing neutral point (NP) potential variation. Until now, the NP potential problem of variation has been investigated and lots of solutions have also been proposed. This paper presents a neutral point voltage control technology using the anti-windup PI controller and offset technology of PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) to control the variation of NPC 3-phase three-level inverter neutral point voltage. And the proposed algorithm is tested and verified using a PLL (Phase Locked Loop) in order to synchronize the phase voltage from the line voltage of grid. It significantly improves the voltage balancing under a solar fluctuation conditions of the inverter. Experimental results show the good performance and effectiveness of the proposed method.

  • Maximum utilization of unused license spectrum is one of key factor in cognitive radio network which can handle the large number of systems and devices connected on smart grid AMI network. The central intelligence control system has responsibility to accept new technologies and users for automation. To ensure a reliable communication in smart grid system through cognitive network, a minimum mean square error (MSE) signal using unused licensed spectrum (or frequency) is necessary to be detected with small decision error. In this paper, we introduce a user control wireless smart grid system with minimum MSE using LMS algorithm.

  • Active hybrid solid state transformer(AHSST) is newly emerging as a device to maintan the power quality of power distribution. AHSST has a simple structure in which a power electronics device is connected in series to a conventional distribution transformer. The connected power electronics device maintains the constant voltage regardless of the primary grid voltage fluctuation through the secondary voltage control to improve the power quality. It also has a simple structure compare to conventional solid state transformer system and can achieve the same performance with fractionally-rated converter. This paper proposes an multi-level converter based on AHSST system that has a simpler control method and wider voltage control range than the conventional AHSST. The proposed system is verified by simulations.

  • Solar energy is desirable due to its renewable and pollution-free properties. In order to utilize the present utility grid infrastructure for power transmission and distribution, a do-dc boost converter and grid connected dc-to-ac inverters are needed for solar power generation. The dc-dc boost converter allows the PV system to operate at high do-link voltage. The single-phase inverter provides the necessary voltage and frequency for interconnection to the grid. In this paper, first, current loop transfer function of a single-phase grid-tie inverter has been systematically derived Second the MPPT of conductance increment method at converter side is proposed to supply the maximum power to the inverter side. Simulation results are shown to access the performance of PV system and its behaviour at the interconnection point.

  • Micro-source units having power ratings in thousands of watts can provide power quality with higher reliability and efficiency than the conventional large scale units. This paper develops switching level model of micro-source and studies the characteristics of the micro-grid consisting of multiple micro-sources and interfaced with electric power system. The developed model adopts the space vector PWM to fully utilize the capacity of inverter. The interaction of the grid connected micro-sources and the characteristics of the control system parameters are investigated. Micro-sources and micro-grid are implemented using PSCAD/EMTDC. Simulation results show that the proposed model is efficient for studying micro-grid system.

  • Microturbines system (MTS) are currently being deployed as small scale on-site distributed generators for microgrids and smart grids. In order to fully exploit DG potentialities, advanced integrated controls that include power electronics facilities, communication technologies and advanced modeling are required. Significant expectations are posed on gas microturbines that can be easily installed in large commercial and public buildings. Modeling, control, simulation of microturbine generator based distributed generation system in smart grid application of buildings for both grid-connected and islanding conditions are presented. It also incorporates modeling and simulation of MT with a speed control system of the MT-permanent magnet synchronous generator to keep the speed constant with load variation. Model and simulations are performed using MATLAB, Simulink and SimPowerSystem software package. The model is built from the dynamics of each part with their interconnections. This simplified model is a useful tool for studying the various operational aspects of MT and is also applicable with building cooling, heating and power (BCHP) systems

  • The paper presents a modeling of the grid-connected wind turbine generation system on MATLAB/Simulink and aims to perform simulations for analysis of the system's characteristics. It performs a pitch regulation for control of the wind generator's output with respect to wind speed variation, and presents a relationship between interconnecting transformer's connections and fault current by reviewing the variations of fault current according to transformer connections in a grid-connected wind power generation system. It also investigates the effect of grounding methods of the interconnecting transformer's neutral point on fault current variations. The simulation results show the differences of fault currents, voltages and generator's characteristics for a line-to-ground fault according to interconnecting transformer's four different connections, and the differences of fault currents of the system according to grounding methods of the transformer neutral point. Therefore, the case studies demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed simulation model on Simulink.

  • Virtual synchronous generator (VSG) in single-phase to interface distributed renewable energy resources is investigated in this paper. Mathematical models and numerical analysis are utilized to illustrate the features of the VSG. Enhanced control strategy is presented to ensure the performance of the VSG. Besides, a second order generalized integer (SOGI) is employed to calculate the instantaneous output power of the VSG in virtual ${\alpha}{\beta}$ frame. By the means of a phase-locked loop based scheme, the VSG can seamlessly transform between islanded and grid-tied modes, which can meet the requirements of micro-grid. At last, the validation and the proposed approach are verified by the simulated results using PSCAD/EMTDC.

  • An electric power compensation system for a DC transmission system with an integrated wind turbine generator is proposed. The proposed compensation system consists of a synchronous generator and a duplex reactor. This apparatus is connected to the sending-end circuit of the DC transmission system. A set of steady-state equations of the system is first derived. Then, the effect of the duplex reactor, which can eliminate the sending-end grid current distortion due to commutation of the converter, is explored. The relationships among power at the sending-end circuit are also revealed. It is shown that fluctuations in the sending-end grid power due to changes in wind velocities are compensated with the proposed system. Finally, the effects of the sending-end grid conditions on the steady-state characteristics of the system are studied.
