  • In this paper, we explain a haptic based video and audio streaming method. The proposed method is to stream tactile and vibration information along with video and audio information. The video screen is divided into a grid, and each cell has tactile information which is corresponding to the content. At the same time, the sound stream is also analyzed and vibration information is applied. These data are streamed to clients and displayed through a haptic device and a vibration interface. So, a client will be more immersed into the video and audio by touching and getting vibrations.

  • The change in global climate and Asian monsoon patterns during the mid-Holocene, 6000 years before present (6 ka), is simulated by a climate model at spectral truncations of T170 with 18 vertical layers, corresponding to grid-cell sizes of roughly 75km. The present simulation is forced with the observed monthly data of sea surface temperatures, and the specified concentration of atmospheric carbon dioxide, while in the mid-Holocene experiment, orbital parameters such as obliquity, precession, and eccentricity are changed to the 6ka conditions. Under such conditions, the precipitation associated with the summer monsoon is enhanced over a wider zonal band from the Middle East to Southeast Asia, while no significant alteration takes Place in winter. The monsoonal wind also increases over the Arabian Sea, showing the enhanced southwesterly wind during summer and northeasterly wind during winter. Overall, the showing of the Asian monsoon is enhanced during the mid-Holocene, especially in summer, which is consistent with the proxy estimates and other previous model simulations.

  • The finite volume time domain (FVTD) method gives accurate results for the calculation of electromagnetic wave propagation but it requires large amount of computer memory. In this paper we propose a modified FVTD that employs a time subdivision. The time-subdivided FVTD (TS-FVTD) method is enough to divide the space domain grid with a large step size. This method can reduce computation time and memory resources. We check the effectiveness of the proposed method in order to apply to the analysis of electromagnetic field from rough surface with dielectric waveguide.

  • A comparative analysis of thermal models in the lattice Boltzmann method(LBM) for the simulation of laminar natural convection in a square cavity is presented. A HYBRID method, in which the thermal equation is solved by the Navier-Stokes equation method while the mass and momentum conservation are resolved by the lattice Boltzmann method, is introduced and its merits are explained. All the governing equations are discretized on a cell-centered, non-uniform grid using the finite-volume method. The convection terms are treated by a second-order central-difference scheme with a deferred correction method to ensure stability of the solutions. The HYBRID method and the double-population method are applied to the simulation of natural convection in a square cavity and the predicted results are compared with the benchmark solutions given in the literatures. The predicted results are also compared with those by the conventional Navier-Stokes equation method. In general, the present HYBRID method is as accurate as the Navier-Stokes equation method and the double-population method. The HYBRID method shows better convergence and stability than the double-population method. These observations indicate that this HYBRID method is an efficient and economic method for the simulation of incompressible fluid flow and heat transfer problem with the LBM.

  • A new type of a fretting wear tester has been designed and developed in order to simulate the actual vibration behavior of a nuclear fuel rod for springs/dimples in room temperature. When considering the actual contact condition between fuel rod and spring/dimple, if fretting wear progress due to the flow-induced vibration (FIV) under a specific normal load exerted on the fuel rod by the elastic deformation of the spring, the contacting force between the fuel rod and dimple that were located in the opposite side should be decreased. Consequently, the evaluation of developed spacer grids against fretting wear damage should be performed with the results of a cell unit experiments because the contacting force is one of the most important variables that influence to the fretting wear mechanism. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a new type of fretting test rig in order to simulate the actual contact condition. In this paper, the development procedure of a new fretting wear tester and its performance were discussed in detail.

  • This study analyzed the performance of long term operation photovoltaic system The 50 kWp grid connected photovoltaic system which was installed at KEPRI site in 1999 has been operated more than 12 years. In order to acquire long term operation characteristics of medium size photovoltaic system, the operation test data related on power generation electricity and capacity factor of 50 kWp system, which have been collected since 1999, were analysed. From the analysing results, 57.7 MWh in annual power generation electricity of 50 kWp photovoltaic system in 1999 has been decreased 49.1 MWh in 2005 and reached 38.0 MWh in 2010. In addition to, the capacity factor of 50 kWp photovoltaic system also showed 13.2 % in 1999, 11.2% in 2005 and finally reached 8.8% in 2011. The operation test data showed a trend of decreasing of generation electricity and capacity factor during the 12 years operation time and we guessed that was caused by solar cell performance degradation and decreasing of PCS system efficiency.

  • A single active capacitor snubber-assisted soft-switching sinewave pulse modulation utility-interactive power conditioner with a three-winding flyback high frequency transformer link and a bidirectional active power switch in its secondary side has been proposed. With the aid of the switched-capacitor quasi-resonant snubber cell, the high frequency switching devices in the primary side of the proposed DC-to-AC sinewave power inverter can be turned-off with ZVS commutation. In addition to this, the proposed power conditioner in the DCM can effectively take the advantages of ZCS turn-on commutation. Its output port is connected directly to the utility AC power source grid. At the end, the prototype of the proposed HF-UPC is built and tested in experiment. Its power conversion conditioning and processing circuit with a high frequency flyback transformer link is verified and the output sinewave current is qualified in accordance with the power quality guidelines of the utility AC interactive power systems.

  • Numerical simulations of fluid injection into particulate materials were conducted to observe cavity initiation and propagation using distinct element method. After generation of initial particles and wall elements, confining stress was applied by servo-control method. The fluid scheme solves the continuity and Navior-Stokes equations numerically, then derives pressure and velocity vectors for fixed grid by considering the existence of particles within the fluid cell. Fluid was injected as 7-step into the assembly in the x-direction from the inlet located at the center of the left boundary under confining stress condition, 0.1MPa and 0.5MPa, respectively. For each simulation, movement of particles, flow rate, fluid velocity, pressure history, wall stress including cavity initiation and propagation by interaction of flulid-paricles were analyzed.

  • Many models intending to explain the latitudinal gradient of increasing species diversity from the poles to the equator are presented, which are a formalisation of the species-energy hypothesis. The model predictions are consistent with patterns of increasing species number with increasing mean air or water temperatures for plants and animals. An increase in species richness is also correlated with net primary production or the Normalised Difference Vegetation Index. This implies that increased availability of resources favours increased diversity capacity. The explanatory variables included in the biodiversity prediction models represent measures of water, energy, water-energy, habitat, history/evolution and biological responses. Water variables tend to be the best predictors when the geographic scope of the data is restricted to tropical and subtropical areas, whereas water-energy variables dominate when colder areas are included. In major models, about 20-35% of species in the various global regions (European, Africa, etc.) will disappear from each grid cell by 2050 and >50% could be vulnerable or threatened by 2080. This study provides good explanations for predictive models and future changes in biodiversity depending on various scenarios.

  • The flow field around a high-speed train including cross-wind effects has been simulated. This study solves 3-D unsteady incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in the inertial frame using the iterative time marching scheme. The governing equations are differenced with 1st-order accurate backward difference scheme for the time derivatives, 3th-order accurate QUICK scheme for the convective terms and 2nd-order accurate central difference scheme for the viscous terms. The Marker-and-Cell concept was applied to efficiently solve continuity equation, which is differenced with 2nd-order accurate central difference scheme. The 4th-order artificial damping is added to the continuity equation for numerical stability. A C-H type of elliptic grid system is generated around a high-speed train including ground. The Baldwin-Lomax turbulent model was implemented to simulate the turbulent flows. To validate the present procedure, the flow around a high speed train at constant yaw angle of $45^{\circ}\;and\;90^{\circ}$ has been simulated. The simulation shows 3-D vortex generation in the lee corner. The flow separation is also observed around the rear of the train. It has concluded that the results of present study properly agree with physical flow phenomena.
