  • This paper suggests the Facility Management System for plant factory promising to be a core technology of the agriculture in the future. This system makes diagnoses that status from sensors or facilities in the factory for exact operation and monitors the internal environment with the control status in real-time. It is expected that we could operate a plant factory safely and effectively by using the system. The system consists of the data management module, the context provider module, the context interpreter module, the service provider module, the data storage and user interface. The system provide with the failure diagnosis service, the facility control service, and the high-reliability monitoring service via the interactions between above modules. The failure diagnosis service determines whether the sensors or facility devices are in failure or not, and informs the administrator of their conditions. The facility control service is activated in case if the facilities need to be managed during the diagnosis for failure or malfunction processes. The high-reliability monitoring service provides the administrator with verified data through the failure diagnosis service. Then we confirmed that the suggested system operates correctly through the system simulation.

  • Growth information of crops is essential for efficient control of greenhouse environment. However, a few non-invasive and continuous monitoring methods of crop growth has been developed. A computer vision system with a CCD camera and a frame grabber was developed to conduct non-destructive and intact plant growth analyses. The developed system was evaluated by conducting the growth analysis of lettuce. A linear model that explains the relationship between the relative crop coverage by the crop canopy and dry weight of a lettuce was presented. It was shown that this measurement method could estimate the dry weight from the relative crop coverage by the crop canopy. The result also showed that there was a high correlation between the projected top leaf area and the dry weight of the lettuce.

  • Objective of the research is to demonstrate solar thermal space and ground heating system which is integrated to a greenhouse culture facility for reducing heating cost, increasing the value of product by environment control, and developing advanced culture technology by deploying solar thermal system. Field test for the demonstration was carried out in horticulture complex in Jeju Island. Medium scale solar hot water system was installed in a ground heating culture facility. Reliability and economic aspect of the system which was operated complementary with thermal storage and solar hot water generation were analyzed by investigating collector efficiency, operation performance, and control features. Short term day test on element performance and Long term test of the whole system were carried out. Optimum operating condition and its characteristics were closely investigated by changing the control condition based on the temperature difference which is the most important operating parameter. For establishing more reliable and optimal design data regarding system scale and operation condition, continuous operation and monitoring on the system need to be further carried out. However, it is expected that, in high-insolation areas where large-scale ground storage is adaptable, solar system demonstrated in the research could be economically competitive and promisingly disseminate over various application areas.

  • The measuring system was developed for automation of hydroponic culture. It runs in Windows 3.1 and 95. Main window contains greenhouse screen and menu bars such as system setting, sensor calibration, greenhouse status, actuator control, file management, view, and help. Users can use pop-up menu, tool bar and status bat as well as menu bar for manipulation. Especially it was designed to retain flexibility for researchers, who changed detecting sensors frequently. Users can change storage intervals of files, of which 3 types were prepared to use in other software like as statistical programs, graphic programs and/or spread sheets. This system was adopted to deep flow culture system and evaluated to be appropriate for any kind of hydroponic systems.

  • This paper proposes a remote monitoring system, which manages crops' growth environment on a real-time basis by applying to greenhouses Green U-IT technology connecting environment control equipment such as temperature sensors, soil sensors, and moisture censors with computers. Information on greenhouses' environment is stored in a database, and by utilizing linear regression analysis and differential item functioning (DIF) analysis, optimal information on growth and environment is extracted from stored information in the form of items desired by users, and compared, analyzed, and monitored. By linking greenhouse environment control system with web environment and remotely controlling the system, users do not need to visit farmland and can remotely control greenhouses' environment on a real-time basis. Therefore farmhouses' production efficiency may be enhanced by continuously providing optimal growth environment for plants.

  • Previous management for speed in road traffic system was aimed only to the improvement of mobility and safety. However, consideration for the aspect of environment and energy consumption efficiency was valued less than the former ones. Nevertheless, economical damage scope caused by climate change has been increasing and it is estimated that environmental value will be increased because of the change of external circumstances. In addition, policy for reducing carbon emission in transportation system was assessed as insufficient in improving the condition of traffic road since it only focused on the transition of private vehicle into public transportation and development of eco-friendly car. Now it is the time to prepare for the adaptation strategy and precaution for the increased number of private vehicle in Korea. For this, paradigm shift in traffic operation which includes the policy not only about the mobility but also about caring environment would be needed. It is needed to be able to monitor the actual amount of greenhouse gas in real time to reduce the amount of emitted greenhouse gas in the aspect of traffic management. In this research, a methodology which can build on-line greenhouse gas emission monitoring system by using real time traffic data and predicting the circumstance in next 5 minutes was suggested.

  • This study was conducted to examine an artificial recharge system, which was considered to be an alternative for securing additional groundwater resources in a high-density greenhouse region. An injection well with a depth of 14.0 m was placed in an alluvial plain of the zone. Eight monitoring wells were placed in a shape of dual circles around the injection well. Aquifer tests showed that the aquifer was comprised with high-permeable layer with hydraulic conductivities of 1.5×10-3~2.4×10-2 cm/sec and storage coefficients of 0.07~0.10. A step injection test resulted in a specific groundwater-level rising (Sr/Q) values of 0.013~0.018 day/㎡ with 64~92% injection efficiencies. Results of the constant-rate injection test with an optimal injection rate of 100 ㎥/day demonstrated an enormous storage capacity of the alluvial aquifer during ten experimental days. To design an optimal recharge system for an artificial recharge, the high-permeable layer should be isolated by dual packers and suitable pressure should be applied to the injection well in order to store water. An anisotropy ratio of the alluvial aquifer was evaluated to be approximately 1.25 : 1 with an anisotropy angle of 71 degrees, indicating intervals among injection wells are almost the same.

  • This research was conducted to examine the temporal methane ($CH_4$) and nitrous oxide ($N_2O$) emission trends in livestock agriculture from year 1990 to 2011 with Tier 1 national greenhouse gas (GHG) inventory reporting method, which was related to efforts of decreasing GHG emissions and to achievement of voluntary GHG mitigation target. Methane emissions from enteric fermentation were calculated with default $CH_4$ emission factors of IPCC. Methane and $N_2O$ emissions from manure treatment processes were calculated with Tier 1 and mixture of Tier 1 and Tier 2 including $N_2O$ emission factors of manure treatment systems and nitrogen excretion rate of livestock, respectively. According to 2013 National GHG Inventory Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification report, GHG emission fluctuations from enteric fermentation and manure treatment processes were similarto livestock head fluctuation. GHG emissions from enteric fermentation were mainly affected by beef cattle including Hanwoo, while manure treatment processes were affected by various livestock.

  • In many recent studies, a variety of environmental control system for practical gardening facilities such as facility house and plant factory have been proposed. However, the plants have been exposed to growth disorder and disease and pest injury because the temperature and humidity have not properly controlled so far. Therefore, a lot of damage of farmers have been reported. The air circulation fan and industrial dehumidifier have been currently utilized as the countermeasures, but they do not meet the expectation. In this study, the growth phase of each plant is recognized by using cycle-by-cycle plants growth recogniztion algorithm to provide optimal environment according to the growth phases of each plant.he productivity can be raised by using cycle-by-cycle plant growth recognition monitoring system because it optimally controls the environment by cycle that is required for plant growth.
