  • We propose a new technique for the optical encryption of gray-level optical images digitized into 8-bits binary data by ASCII encoding followed by QPSK modulation. We made an encrypted digital hologram with a security key by using 2-step phase-shifting digital holography, and the encrypted digital hologram is recorded on a CCD camera with 256 gray-level quantized intensities. With these encrypted digital holograms, the phase values are reconstructed by the same security key and are decrypted into the original gray-level optical image by demodulation and decoding. Simulation results show that the proposed method can be used for cryptosystems and security systems.

  • Plasma Display Panel (PDP) is required to be both the determination of white point of each gray level and the inverse gamma correction since no-balanced RGB cell and linear property of PDP, respectively. However, these two methods cause degradation of grey level representation and undesirable false contour in the dark areas on PDP. In this paper, we implemented real time image processor of the proposed error diffusion algorithm and unsharp masking operation to protect the blurring image caused by the error diffusion. Experimental results showed drastic improvements of gray level representation and reduction of undesirable false contour.

  • We presents an edge-based point correlation algorithm for fast and stable visual inspection system. Conventional algorithms based on NGC(normalized gray-level correlation) have to overcome some difficulties in applying automated inspection systems to real factory environment. First of all, NGC algorithms involve highly complex computation and thus require high performance hardware for realtime process. In addition, lighting condition in realistic factory environments is not stable and therefore intensity variation from uncontrolled lights gives many troubles for applying NGC directly as pattern matching algorithm. We propose an algorithm to solve these problems, using thinned and binarized edge data, which are obtained from the original image. A point correlation algorithm with the thinned edges is introduced with image pyramid technique to reduce the computational complexity. Matching edges instead of using original gray-level image pixels overcomes problems in NGC method and pyramid of edges also provides fast and stable processing. All proposed methods are proved by the experiments using real images.

  • In this paper, we propose a Fuzzy Classifier System(FCS) to find a set of fuzzy rules which can carry out the edge detection. The classifier system of Holland can evaluate the usefulness of rules represented by classifiers with repeated learning. FCS makes the classifier system be able to carry out the mapping from continuous inputs to outputs. It is the FCS that applies the method of machine learning to the concept of fuzzy logic. It is that the antecedent and consequent of classifier is same as a fuzzy rule. In this paper, the FCS is the Michigan style. A single fuzzy if-then rule is coded as an individual. The average gray levels which each group of neighbor pixels has are represented into fuzzy set. Then a pixel is decided whether it is edge pixel or not using fuzzy if-then rules. Depending on the average of gray levels, a number of fuzzy rules can be activated, and each rules makes the output. These outputs are aggregated and defuzzified to take new gray value of the pixel. To evaluate this edge detection, we will compare the new gray level of a pixel with gray level obtained by the other edge detection method such as Sobel edge detection. This comparison provides a reinforcement signal for FCS which is reinforcement learning. Also the FCS employs the Genetic Algorithms to make new rules and modify rules when performance of the system needs to be improved.

  • Because of the reduced number of displayable gray levels resulting from inverse gamma correction, images on a plasma display panel (PDP) exhibit undesirable false contours in dark areas. An error diffusion method has been applied to remedy this problem. However, it is computationally expensive and requires large memory resources. This paper proposes a computationally efficient dithering based technique to improve the gray level reproduction capability in dark areas. In the proposed method, multiple dithering masks ate utilized in turn to improve the gray level reproduction in dark areas. Also, in order to reduce undesirable regular patterns generated by the dithering method, positions of threshold values within a given dithering mask are changed. Compared to the error diffusion method, the proposed method requires much less computations and memory resources with a comparable gray level reproduction capability.

  • An all-optical 4-bit Gray code to binary coded decimal (BCD) converter by means of commercially available numerical analysis tool (VPI) was demonstrated, for the first time to our knowledge. Circuit design approach was modified appropriately in order to fit the electrical method on an all-optical logic circuit based on a cross gain modulation (XGM) process so that signal degradation due to the non-ideal optical logic gates can be minimized. Without regenerations, Q-factor of around 4 was obtained for the most severely degraded output bit (least significant bit-LSB) with 2.5 Gbps clean input signals having 20 dB extinction ratio. While modifying the two-level simplification method and Karnaugh map method to design a Gray code to BCD converter, a general design concept was also founded (one-level simplification) in this research, not only for the Gray code to BCD converter but also for any general applications.

  • Gray mold caused by Botrytis cinerea on strawberry plants is an economically significant disease in Korea. The rates for diseased fruits are high during the strawberry harvesting period from December to February, especially in hydroponic cultivation. This study assessed the effect of the nitrogen type in the soil culture and the electrical conductivity (EC) of the nutrient solution in a hydroponic culture on the gray mold incidence in 'Seolhyang' strawberry plants. The nitrogen sources assayed included calcium nitrate tetrahydrate (CN4), calcium nitrate decahydrate (CN10), ammonium sulfate (AS), and commercial fertilizer 213 (213). The effect of the EC was tested at 0.5, 0.8, 1.0, and $1.5dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$. The occurrence of gray mold varied according to the nitrogen type. The disease incidence and nitrogen content for the main nitrogen type were higher compared to the non-treated control. The AS treatment showed the highest occurrence of tipburn and gray mold. The incidence of gray mold as well as the nitrogen and phosphorus content of the leaves increased as the EC level was increased. These results indicate that the incidence of gray mold in strawberry plants is related to the nitrogen content of the leaf and the EC of the nutrient solution.

  • In PDP(Plasma Display Panel), sub-field method is used to implement gray scale. Each sub-field has different periods. And Every gray level has information of which sub-field has to be displayed. This is called sub-field mapping. There are several sub-field mapping values in some gray levels. So, it is possible to select best choice in this paper, we propose new sub field mapping method using a fuzzy inference system to select best sub-field mapping values in accordance with input image and environment temperature. In order to implement fuzzy system, we used MATLAB fuzzy inference editor.

  • We present gray scale implementation method based on QMA driving technique. We clarified the mechanism of wall charge quantization through discharge current measurement. We used three wall charge states to implement gray scale. The cells would be one of fully-ON, half-On, and OFF states. We built a five sub-fields 243 level gray scale with sustain pulse count of 2, 6, 18, 54, and 162.

  • A new driving scheme, Address and Display Period Complex Driving for Expanding Gray Scale(ACE), is proposed by mixing Address Display period Separated(ADS) and Address While Display(AWD). In this method scan lines are divided in blocks driving by AWD and scan lines in block progress sequential high speed addressing. ADS driving get accomplished in low gray level for expanding gray scale. Scan time is reduced and the number of subfields is increased by high speed addressing of ACE. That expands the gray scale and decreases the dynamic false contour. Also, that improves contrast by using ramp reset.
