Determinants of Trade Flows and Trade Structure between Korea and ASEAN

  • Our paper contributes to existing literature by empirically investigate the trade structure and trade performance between Korea and ASEAN. Overall, trade activities between Korea and almost major ASEAN economies have significantly focused on capital goods, medium and high technology goods, while the remaining ASEAN countries' exports over Korea have been mainly primary and low technology goods. There has been a higher complementarity in between Korea's exports and ASEAN's imports compared with between ASEAN's exports and Korea's imports. Estimation results show that ASEAN's GDP and income have larger impacts than those of Korea on aggregate trade flows as well as sectoral level between two sides. Additionally, geographical conditions are critical factors impeding Korea-ASEAN trade. Meanwhile, other factors in the estimation model have mixed impacts on components of Korea-ASEAN trade structure. Finally, there is a significant room for Korea's trade expansion with ASEAN, particularly new and less developed members in future.

The EU-South Korea FTA: Which Sector Benefits the Most?

  • Purpose - This study empirically analyzes the effects of the European Union-South Korea Free Trade Agreement on Korean exports in major sectors. Design/Methodology - This study is based on the augmented gravity model with a panel data set covering 51 countries between the years 2000 and 2015. Findings - Main findings of the present study is that the agreement has affected the chemical sector the most. Fixed effects estimation predicted a positive trade effect of 38.3%, while Poisson maximum likelihood estimation predicted an impact of 4.75% in the chemical export sector. Regression results for the other sectors only show insignificant effects. Originality/value - The findings imply that the effects of the EU-South Korea free trade agreement on the Korean exports are quite specific compared to the European ones, meaning that the Korean government should focus on sector-specific programs to maximize the welfare benefits of the free trade agreement.

  • 본 논문은 2014년 세월호 사고 이후 해양재난사고에 대한 국민들의 경각심이 고조되었으며 해양레저인구증가로 인한 해양사고가 증가되는 상황에서 사고예방 및 해양안전문화 고취를 위한 해양안전교육센터 구축하고자 수요추정을 수행하였다. 특히, 우리나라 대부분의 해양안전체험관과 유사한 체험관들은 대부분 전라, 경기지역에 분포하고 있어 지역 편향을 해소하는 차원에서 동남권 안전센터 구축이 필요한 상황이며 해양레저 및 해양산업의 중심이 영남권에 위치하고 있기 때문에 안전교육센터의 구축의 정책적인 타당성이 있다. 본 논문에서는 해양안전교육센터 수요추정을 중력모형을 활용하여 수행하였으며 사회경제적인 타당성의 근거로서 활용이 가능할 것으로 기대된다.

Empirical Analysis on the Effects of FTAs and FTA Spillover on the Bilateral Trade using GMM, Fixed and Random Panel Model, and PPML Estimation (GMM, 패널, PPML 비교분석을 통한 FTA와 FTA파급효과 분석)

  • This paper analyzes both the FTA effects and FTA spillover effects on bilateral trade using 62 countries' panel data during the period of 2003 ~ 2013. To this end, we construct a FTA dummy variable for the effect of FTA in the model and the weighted FTA matrix interacted with export and import for the spillover effect of FTA. Gravity model is applied to the empirical analysis with GMM, fixed and random effects, and PPML estimation. As a result of the analysis, FTA variables have positive relationships with bilateral export and import. The weighted FTA matrix interacted with export and import also have positive signs on the bilateral export and import in all estimations. Thus, we conclude that various FTAs of neighbor or 3rd countries increase the bilateral export and import. We provide some implications that a country to increase the amount of trade has a trade relationship with the countries having various FTAs and for the FTA effect analysis, the three-country model is better than to the two-country model.

  • For automated guidance control of a magnetically guided-all wheel steered vehicle, it is necessary to have information about position and orientation of the vehicle, and deviations from the reference path in real time. The magnet reference system considered here consists of three magnetic sensors mounted on the vehicle and magnetic markers, which are non-equidistantly buried in the road. This paper presents an observer to estimate such position and orientation at the center of gravity of the vehicle. This algorithm is based on the simple kinematic model of vehicle and uses the data of wheel velocity, steering angle, and the discrete measurements of marker positions. Since this algorithm requires the exact values of initial states, we have also proposed an algorithm of determining the initial position and orientation from the 16 successive magnet pole data, which are given by the magnetic measurement system(MMS). The proposed algorithm is capable of continuing to estimate for the case that the magnetic sensor fail to measure up to three successive magnets. It is shown through experimental data that the proposed algorithm works well within permissible error range.

  • Measurement or prediction of compression index (Cc) of soils is essential for assessment of total and differential settlement of structures. It is a well-known fact that this parameter is controlled by several index identifiers of soil including initial void ratio, Atterberg limits, overconsolidation ratio, specific gravity, etc. Many studies in the past proposed relationships for prediction of Cc based on different index properties. Therefore, this study aims to present a comparison of previously proposed equations for estimation of Cc. Data from literature was compiled, and a total of 90 and 623 test results on remolded and undisturbed specimens were used to question the validity of previously proposed equations. Nevertheless, the modeling ability of 7 and 12 equations for estimation of Cc of remolded and undisturbed soils were questioned by use of compiled data. Moreover, new empirical relationships based on initial void ratio and toughness limit for prediction of Cc was proposed by use of nonlinear multivariable regression and evolutionary based regression analyses. The results are promising-the performances of models established are quite acceptable, which are verified by statistical analyses.

  • Onshore wind farms having several problems, difficult to secure a building site and incur the enmity of the people. Therefore, offshore wind farms are increasingly expected, because there are huge resource and large site in offshore. If huge wind turbines are constructed, the offshore wind power base is concerned about subsidence. In order to confirm the ground stability, estimation of subsidence is necessary. In this paper, the subsidence is predicted by continuity model when the gravity and the mono-pile base are constructed on soft ground. The FLAC 3D, three dimensional FDM program, was adopted to analysis subsidence. Input factors are yielded by geological information at the yeompo quay in ulsan and the results of laboratory experiments. It has been compared that the original ground with improved ground under the gravity base, and constructed mono-pile under the mono-pile base.

New Maximum Likelihood Estimation Algorithms for the Parameters of Generalized Gravity Model (일반화중력모형 파라메터의 새로운 최우추정기법 개발)

  • 본 논문에서는 최근에 소개된 일반화중력모형(Generalized Gravity Model)파라메터의 최우추정치(Maximum Likelihood Estimates) 계산을 위한 새로운 알고리즘을 이론적으로 도출하였다. 개발된 알고리즘은 첫째 계산속도, 둘째 정밀도, 셋째 모형변수(예컨데 통행시간, 통행비용 등)들 간에 공선성(multicolinearity)이 존재할 경우의 계산능력, 넷째 대규모 스케일의 기.종점자료(large O-D Matrices)에 적용시의 계산능력, 다섯째 모형변수의 개수에 따른 계산능력의 평가기준에서 그 계산실적이 기존의 알고리즘과 비교 평가 되었다. 제안된 기법중에서 Modified Scoring 기법은 계산속도 및 정밀도등 앞서 나열한 계산능력의 평가기준 중 모든 부문에서 매우 탁월한 계산실적을 보이는 것으로 판명되었다. 따라서 최선의 추정치를 보장하는 최우추정기법이 대규모 스케일의 교통계획 적용에도 큰 비용(시간)부담없이 손쉽게 적용될 수 있게 되었다. 제안된 새로운 알고리즘의 적용시 교통계획분야에 가져올 수 있는 기대효과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 최우추정법이 대규모 O-D 통행표에 쉽게 적용될 수 있고 또한 PC등 소형 컴퓨터에서도 처리가 쉽다. 둘째, 모형설명변수의 자유로운 선택등 통계적실험(experimentation)을 가능케 한다. 셋째, 중력모형이 내재되어 있는 결합모형(Combined Model)의 정산속도를 높인다. 넷째, IVHS(Intelligent Vehicle and Highway System)와 같은 분야에서 온라인(On-line)모형정산을 가능케 할 수 있다.

The Precision Validation of the Precise Baseline Determination for Satellite Formation

  • The needs for satellite formation flying are gradually increasing to perform the advanced space missions in remote sensing and observation of the space or Earth. Formation flying in low Earth orbit can perform the scientific missions that cannot be realized with a single spacecraft. One of the various techniques of satellite formation flying is the determination of the precise baselines between the satellites within the formation, which has to be in company with the precision validation. In this paper, the baseline of Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) A and B was determined with the real global positioning system (GPS) measurements of GRACE satellites. And baseline precision was validated with the batch and sequential processing methods using K/Ka-band ranging system (KBR) biased range measurements. Because the proposed sequential method validate the baseline precision, removing the KBR bias with the epoch difference instead of its estimation, the validating data (KBR biased range) are independent of the data validated (GPS-baseline) and this method can be applied to the real-time precision validation. The result of sequential precision validation was 1.5~3.0 mm which is similar to the batch precision validation.

TWSC Estimation using GRACE Satellite Gravity Data (GRACE 인공위성 중력 자료를 이용한 수자원변화량(TWSC) 산정)

  • 지구는 지속적으로 변화하는 동력학적 시스템이며, 지표면 형상 및 지구 내부의 질량분포도 계속 변화하고 있다. 지구시스템의 질량재분배 과정에서 발생되는 밀도 차이는 중력장의 미세한 변이를 초래한다. 미 항공우주센터(NASA)와 독일 국립 항공우주연구센터(DLR)에서 공동으로 개발한 GRACE (Gravity Recovery And Climate Experiment) 인공위성은 지구의 중력장을 측정하는 위성으로, 2002년부터 현재까지 9년 동안 활동해왔다. 본 연구에서는 한반도(북위 $37.5^{\circ}\sim41.5^{\circ}$, 동경 $125.5^{\circ}\sim130.5^{\circ}$)의 월평균 수자원변화량(TWSC: Terrestrial Water Storage Change)을 산정하기 위해 미국 텍사스대학교 공간연구센터(CSR)에서 가우시안 필터링을 통해 구면조화함수의 계수 형태로 제공된 총 94개월(2002 년 8월~2010년 6월)의 자료(Level-2)를 이용하였다. Level-2 자료는 해양조석, 고체지구조석 및 지구자전으로 인한 극조석 등 조석의 영향과 대기와 해양의 변동성으로 인한 비조석 영향을 보정한 것이다. 이렇게 산정한 TWSC를 수자원관리정보시스템(WAMIS)과 전지구지표동계화시스템(GLDAS)을 통해 제공되는 자료와 비교 분석하였다. 본 연구를 통해 GRACE 중력장 자료가 수자원총량의 산정과 검증을 위한 대안으로 활용될 수 있음과, 수문요소의 불확실성을 낮출 수 있는 새로운 수문자료로의 활용 가능성을 확인하였다.
