Stability of Inclined Premixed Planar Flames (기울어진 예혼합 평면화염의 안정성)

  • Stability of laminar premixed planar flames inclined in the gravitational field is asymptotically examined. The flame structure is resolved by a large activation energy asymptotics and a long wave approximation. The coupling between hydrodynamics and diffusion processes is included and near-unity Lewis number is assumed. The results show that as the flame is more inclined from the horizontal plane it becomes more unstable due to not only the decrease of stabilizing effect of gravity but also the increase of destabilizing effect of rotational flow. The obtained dispersion relation involves the Prandtl number and shows the destabilizing effect of viscosity. The analysis predicts that the phase velocity of unstable flame wave depends on not only the flame angle but also the Lewis number. For relatively short wave disturbances, still much larger than flame thickness, the most unstable wavelength is nearly independent on the flame angle and the flame can be stabilized by gravity and diffusion mechanism.

Study of Environmental Impact on the Galaxy Evolution in the Virgo Cluster

  • We present environmental effects on the galaxy evolution in the Virgo cluster focusing on intracluster medium - interstellar medium (ICM-ISM) interactions and gravitational interactions. We identify signatures of these environmental effects for 21 massive late-type galaxies based on the visual inspection of high resolution HI data from VLA Imaging of Virgo spirals in Atomic gas (VIVA) survey comparing with multi-wavelength data. We classify galaxies into three subgroups showing different environmental effects. First and second groups includes galaxies influenced by ongoing/active and past ram pressure stripping effect, respectively. Third group consists of galaxies undergoing gravitational interactions. Additionally, we define neighbor galaxies for each VIVA galaxies utilizing kinematic data from Extended Virgo Cluster Catalog. Assuming that neighbor galaxies share similar levels of environmental effects with host VIVA galaxies, we investigate environmental effects on galaxy properties in different subgroups using SDSS optical and GALEX ultraviolet photometric data. We find that dwarf neighbor galaxies in first and second groups show rapid quenching of their star formation (SF), while massive counterparts are still in SF activity. On the other hand, most third group galaxies show hints of SF activity regardless of their mass. We conclude that SF and evolution of galaxy in the cluster environment is closely linked to ICM-ISM interactions and dwarf galaxies seem to be more sensitive to this effect compared to massive counterparts.

The Effects of Velocity and Concentration in the Oxidizer of Heptane Pool Fires on the Flame Stability (헵탄 풀화재 화염안정성에 관한 산화제 유속 및 농도 효과)

  • Flame flickering occurs mainly because of the buoyancy force for pool fires under ambient air. The cup-burner flame was used for experimental investigation of the effect of the oxidizer velocity on the gravitational instability. The results showed that the flickering frequency decreased with increasing oxidizer velocity. The frequency-buoyancy relation with nondimensional variables coincided with that of the buoyant flume and pool fires when the characteristic velocity was defined as the difference between the fuel and oxidizer velocities, which implies that the origin of the gravitational instability is the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability in the shear layer. The effect of the oxidizer composition on the instability was also examined through nitrogen dilution in the oxidizer stream. As the concentration of inert gas increased, the length of the blue flame increased and lift-off behavior was observed. The oscillation frequency was independent of the dilution ratio, but was related to the local flame structure.

The Effect of Nozzle Height on Heat Transfer of a Hot Steel Plate Cooled by an Impinging Water Jet (충돌수분류에 냉각되는 고온 강판의 열전달에 있어 노즐높이의 영향에 대한 연구)

  • The effect of nozzle height on heat transfer of a hot steel plate cooled by an impinging liquid jet is not well understood. Previous studies have been based on the dimensionless parameter z/d. To test the validity of this dimensionless parameter and to investigate gravitational effects on the jet, stagnation velocity of an impinging liquid jet were measured and the cooling experiments of a hot steel plate were conducted for z/d from 6.7 to 75, and an inverse heat conduction method is applied for the quantitative comparison. Also, the critical instability point of a liquid jet was examined over a range of flow rates. The experimental velocity data for the liquid jet were well correlated with the dimensionless number 1/F $r_{z}$$^2$based on distance. It was thought that the z/d parameter was not valid for heat transfer to an impinging liquid jet under gravitational forces. In the cooling experiments, heat transfer was independent of z when 1/F $r_{z}$$^2$< 0.187(z/d = 6.7). However, it was found that the heat transfer quantity for 1/F $r_{z}$$^2$=0.523(z/d = 70) is larger 11% than that in the region for 1/F $r_{z}$$^2$=0.187. The discrepancy between these results and previous research is likely due to the instability of liquid jet.uid jet.

Pool Boiling Characteristics on the Microstructured surfaces with Both Rectangular Cavities and Channels (사각 공동 및 채널이 형성된 마이크로 구조 표면에서의 수조비등 특성연구)

  • Based on a surface design with rectangular cavities and channels, we investigated the effects of gravity and capillary pressure on pool-boiling Critical Heat Flux (CHF). The microcavity structures could prevent liquid flow by the capillary pressure effect. In addition, the microchannel structures contributed to induce one-dimensional liquid flow on the boiling surface. The relationship between the CHF and capillary flow was clearly established. The driving potentials for the liquid supply into a boiling surface can be generated by the gravitational head and capillary pressure. Through an analysis of pool boiling and visualization data, we reveal that the liquid supplement to maintain the nucleate boiling condition on a boiling surface is closely related to the gravitational pressure head and capillary pressure effect.

Effect Analysis of Relative Position of Blade on Performance of Micro Gravitational Vortex Turbine in Free Water Surface (자유수면에서 마이크로 중력식 와류 수차 성능에 블레이드의 상대위치 변화가 미치는 영향 분석)

  • This paper contributed to the understanding of the effect of the blade relative position on performance of micro gravitational vortex turbine in free water surface. In a constant vortex flow, the rotation, voltage and current of micro vortex water turbine were measured according to the position change of the blade installed at the relative vortex height (y/hv) ranging from 0 to 0.778 below the free water surface. The flow rate ranged from 0.0063 to 0.00662 m3/s. The results of the experiments showed that relative positions of the blade affected the performance of vortex water turbine because the distributions of incoming flow velocity and turbulence intensity were changed. The highest amount of the energy generated by the vortex water turbine occurred in the relative vortex height ranging from 0.111 to 0.222. The output power at the relative vortex height of 0.111 was about 2.4 times larger than the relative vortex height of 0.588 below the free water surface.

  • The aim of this paper is to understand the blade number effect on vortex turbine performance in the cylindrical vortex chamber below the free water surface. Using the same blade profile, the performance of gravitational vortex turbine is tested each with 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 blades installed at the relative vortex height (y/hv) ranging from 0.065 to 0.417. The obtained results indicate that the rotation, voltage, current and power increase in the relative vortex height of 0.065 and 0.111 when increasing the number of blades at flow velocity of less than 0.7 m/s. The average power of the 5-blade turbine is more than others. The performance of the 4-blade turbine with a 130 mm diameter installed near the orifice is higher than that of the same number of blades with a 220 mm diameter in the vortex chamber.

  • Supercavitation can be generated at relatively lower speeds by injecting compressed air behind the cavitator. As a result, an artificially created supercavity is deformed and its tail tends to rise due to gravitational effects. However, practical prediction of the artificial supercavity currently depends on empirical results. In this study, a mathematical model for the artificial supercavity under the gravity effect is proposed. Based on a boundary element method, geometric characteristics of the supercavity at different flow conditions are examined. The results were compared with an existing empirical formula and also experimental observations carried out at a cavitation tunnel of the Chungnam National University.

An Analysis of the Momentum Effect by Students' Characteristics and the Modes of Representation Patterns

  • The purpose of this study was to find the effect of these variables on the duration of the momentum effect. To examine the momentum effect for gravitational field concepts, an intensive time series design was used. We collected data every day except Sundays and holidays for 50 days; 5 days for baseline, 30 days for intervention, and 15 days for the follow up We adopted cognitive levels and styles as students characteristics and two item characteristics(quantity versus quality, and word versus picture) as the item representation patterns. In this study, the momentum effect was influenced by students characteristics and item representation patterns. The results showed that two variables, cognitive style and quantity/quality, were the most influential factors for the duration of momentum effect. Field independent students showed a longer duration than field dependent students did. In addition, students showed a longer duration in quality items than in quantity items. However, students cognitive levels(formal or preformal) and word/picture presentations seemed to have relatively weak effect on the duration of the momentum effect.

External Fixation of Retaining Ligament in Correction of Facial Disfigurement in Type-1 Neurofibromatosis Patients (유지 인대의 외부 고정을 통한 제1형 신경섬유종증 환자의 안면부 변형 교정)

  • Purpose: In neurofibromatosis patients, complete surgical excision of the mass is almost impossible and surgical treatment usually consists of multiple serial excisions that only result in a debulking effect. Remnant tumor mass has a gravitational effect on facial soft tissues that leads to sagging of skin and soft tissue, and eventually, facial disfigurement and asymmetry. The purpose of our surgical method is to perform soft tissue lifting with longer lasting effect with less surgical risk of damaging facial nerve and vessels. With external fixation using K-wire or surgical screw, the procedure only called for a short incision length and had additional adhesive properties that enabled anchoring of soft tissue in a lifted position for a longer postoperative period. Methods: A total of 5 neurofibromatosis patients (NF-1) visited our clinic for mass reduction and face lifting. The age of patients ranged from 13 to 42 (mean 28.8 years), and most patients had a long history of multiple excisions in the past. Face lifting was performed in 2 different areas, the periorbital area in 3 patients, and the midface in 2 patients. The materials used in fixation of retaining ligament were K-wire (n=3) and titanium screw (n=2). Results: Follow up period was from 5 month to 3 years and 1 month (mean=2 years and 1 month). All patients conveyed satisfaction with the results and no major complications were reported. The lifting effect lasted for as long as 3 years, and there were no complaints of relapse of soft tissue depression or sagging within the operated area. 1 patient (M/13) needed secondary k-wire insertion and additional mass excision in 1 year and 10 months postoperatively due to tumor growth. In two patients with K-wire fixation, mild dimpling and tenderness were observed in the follow up period, but in about 2 months postoperatively, dimpling was relieved and there was no need for removal of fixating material. Conclusion: Surgical lifting in neurofibromatosis patients can be challenging, for mass excision cannot be done completely and gravitational effect by residual mass can be persistent. External fixation of the retaining ligament in patients with neurofibromatosis can give satisfactory results-for incision length is relatively shorter, and the lifting effect can last longer compared to other various face lifting techniques.
