To prolong freshness and to reduce a decay rate of cut flowers during storage and distribution, a new packaging paper was developed with grapefruit seed extracts(GFSE) as a natural microorganism control agent. The GFSE was fractionated in order to identify antibiotic fractions by HPLC equipped with C18-reverse phase column chromatography. Among the active fractions, three ones were identified as 1-chloro-2-methyl-benzene (ο-toluene), N, N-dimethyl-benzenemethaneamine, and 1-〔2-(2-ethylethoxy)ethoxy〕-4-(1,1,3,3- tetra methyl)-benzene, while the other three remained unidentified. The GFSE-added paper displayed an effective inhibitory activity against putrefactive bacteria and fungi which were involved in the decay of flowers. Despite excellent antimicrobial acts of the GFSE-treated packaging paper, it was not possible to prevent the cut flowers from being dehydrated during storage, which led to the reduction of their fresh weight. However, additional treatment for giving water- repellency property to the GFSE-treated paper decreased a reduction rate of the fresh weight up to around 50% compared to the only GFSE-treated one.
The major purpose of the present study is to syrvey vegetables, meats, seafoods, processed foods and imported foods for the presence of Listeria spp. and to prevent listeriosis caused by the contamination of Listeria monocytogenes. Listeria spp. was not found in vegetables and processed foods. The optimum growth condition of isolates indentified as Listeria monocytogenes was pH 7.0 and 37$^{\circ}C$. the antimicrobial effect of grapefruit seed extract(GFSE) was observed in the level of more than 100ppm by disk method. When 1ml(2.5$\times$106 CFU/ml) of Listeria monocytogenes was inoculated and incubated for 3 days at 3$0^{\circ}C$, the total cell number of the organism was 4.5$\times$109 in the control, 7.2$\times$103 in 100 $\mu\textrm{g}$/ml of GFSE medium, and 3.5 $\mu\textrm{g}$/ml of GFSE medium. Direct visualization of microbial cells by using both transmission electron microscope and scanning electron microscope showed microbial cell membrane the function of which was destroyed by treating with the dilute solutions of GFSE. It could be confirmed that GFSE completely inhibited the growth of the test strain of Listeria monocytogenes.
The Gelidium corneum (GC)-whey protein isolate (WPI) blend film containing grapefruit seed extract (GSE) was prepared by incorporating different amounts (0, 0.02, 0.04, 0.08, 0.1%) of GSE into the film. The film's tensile strength (TS) and water vapor permeability (WVP) were improved by the addition of GSE. The film containing 0.1% GSE had a TS of 3.27 MPa, whereas the control had 2.64 MPa. WVP of the film was also significantly decreased by the addition of GSE. Addition of 0.1% GSE decreased the populations of Escherichia coli O157:H7, Listeria monocytogenes, and Salmonella Typhimurium by 1.0, 1.6, and 0.6 log CFU/g, respectively, compared to the control. Fish paste was packed with the GC-WPI blend film containing GSE, and microbial change in the fish paste inoculated with E. coli O157:H7, L. monocytogenes, and S. Typhimurium during storage was examined. Populations of E. coli O157:H7, L. monocytogenes, and S. Typhimurium were decreased by 0.60, 0.48, and 0.85 log CFU/g, after 7 day of storage, respectively. These results suggest packaging fish paste in the GC-WPI blend film containing GSE can extend the shelf life.
This study was conducted to identify the structure of the sensibility and autonomic nervous responses to odor by ages. 72 participants, 24 each in their teens, twenties, and thirties were given odor stimuli, cederwood, grapefruit, teebaum, peppermint, rose. During the presentation of stimuli, participant were measured blood flow, skin temperature, skin conductance, and ECG and subjective emotion to each odor were evaluated, Five factors, aesthetic, intensity, naturality, uniqueness, and romantism were identified but there were no differences by ages. Emotional factors that predict the preference to certain odors turned out partly different by ages. However, odors that made participants feel sick created more autonomic nervous response than odors that made them feel good.
Manuka oil sometime named New Zealand's tea tree oil is soluble in oil and come from nature. The $\alpha$-pinene extracted from Manuka oil and R-limonene which is one of the component of extracted Citrex from Grapefruit were used to estimate the antimicrobial activity and to improve the capability of antiseptic. Disk diffusion and broth dilution methods were used to measure the antimicrobial activity Escherichia coli which is gram-negative bacteria and Staphylococcus aureus which is gram-positive bacteria were used as strain. The antimicrobial activity of Manuka oil and $\alpha$-pinene for Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus is similar when the concentration of Manuka oil and $\alpha$-pinene is 10${mu}ell$. However, Antimicrobial activity of Manuka oil for EscherEchta coli, Staphylococcus aureus is better than that of $\alpha$-pinene when the concentration of Manuka oil and $\alpha$-pinene is low. Antimicrobial activity of Citrex is superior to that of R-limonene. The proper ratio of Maunka oil and Citrex can Improve the antimicrobial activity. The proper ratio obtained from studies was 75% of Maunka oil and 25% Citrex for Escherichia coli, 25% of Maunka oil and 75% Citrex for Staphylococcus aureus.

Purpose: It has been reported that the diversity and abundance of microbes in the vagina decrease due to the use of antimicrobial agents, and the high recurrence rate of female vaginitis due to this suggests that a new treatment is needed. Methods: In the experiment, we detected that 10% potassium sorbate solution, 1% eucalyptus oil solution, 1% tea tree oil solution, 400 µL/10 mL grapefruit seed extract solution, 100% lactic acid, 10% acetic acid solution, and 10% lactic acid solution were prepared and used. After adjusting the pH to 4, 5, and 6 with lactic acid and acetic acid in the mixed culture medium, each bacterium was inoculated into the medium and incubated for 72 h at 35℃. Incubate and 0 h each. 24 h. 48 h. The number of bacteria was measured after 72 h. Results: In the mixed culture test between lactic acid bacteria and pathogenic microorganisms, lactic acid bacteria showed good results at pH 5-5.5. Potassium sorbate, which has varying antibacterial activity based on the pH, killed pathogenic bacteria and allowed lactic acid bacteria to survive at pH 5.5. Conclusion: The formulation ratio obtained through this study could be used for the development of a feminine cleanser that can be used as a substitute for antibacterial agents. Further, the findings of this study may be able to solve the problem of antimicrobial resistance in the future.

The antimicrobial and antioxidant activities of grapefruit seed extract(GFSE), which was extracted with glycerine in the special schematic extraction apparatus, were investigated for handling and processing of fishery products. The effectivity of GFSE has been tried on sardine, mackerel and shrimp divided into six lots for each fishery product: control(no treatment) and five GFSE-treated samples. Samples were inoculated with Salmenella typhi, incubated for 24hrs at $30^{\circ}C$ in dextrose-tryptone broth medium and prepared for microbiological 8f chemical analysis and organoleptic assessment. The bacteriological analytical results with GFSE(250ppm) showed the reduction of $1.8\times10^6\to2.0\times10^4,\;1.9\times10^6\to1.8\times10^4$ and $1.6\times10^6\to2.7\times10^3$ in total bacterial count for sardine, mackerel and shrimp, respectively. The test results with GFSE(500ppm) showed a $100\%$ reduction of bacterial mackerel treated with GFSE(500ppm) was reduced to $1.1\times10^4$ and $9.0\times10^3$ respectively. Antioxidant effect of treatment with GFSE at 500ppm level for three products was significant. LSD test results on organoleptic parameter for the samples treated with various showed a significant influence on the appearance, odor and texture in which at concentration 500ppm level give the excellent scours compared to each control.
It has been well known that grapefruit seed extract (GSE) have effects on the deodorization and a wide range disinfectant. But anybody do not research about the decomposition-inhibition effect of GSE. The present study was performed to investigate the decomposition-inhibition effect of GSE by measuring the microscope and electroscope observation with passage of time. A total of 30 healthy Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats weighting from 230 gm to 250 gm were used as experimental animals. One group that do not treated by GSE named control group and the other group that treated by 55% GSE named Experimental group. Under ether anesthesia, right kidney was obtained. Put each sample in $37^{\circ}C$ and humidity $80{\pm}5%$ incubator, we obtained each sample after 0 day, 1 day, 2 days, 3 days, 4 days and 5 days. 4 ${\mu}m$ of paraffin sections were obtained, stained H-E stain and observed by use of a microscope. Morphological change in tissue was similar to control 1 day group and experimental 3 days group. Therefore, decomposition-inhibition effect of GSE continued about 2 days and it protected necrosis. According to above results, the author suggest that 55% GSE is an effective decomposition inhibitor until 2 days on $37^{\circ}C$ and humidity $80{\pm}5%$ conditions.
Objectives: This study evaluated the virucidal efficacy against avian influenza virus (AIV) of a disinfectant spray containing 0.25% grapefruit seed extract, 0.2% citric acid, 0.0625% malic acid and 0.0125% benzalkonium chloride. Methods: The disinfectant spray was diluted several times with hard water (HW) and organic matter (OM). Two point five mL of each diluent was added into each test tube, and 2.5 mL of AIV suspension was inserted into each test tube. After 30 minutes of virus-disinfectant contact reaction at $4^{\circ}C$, 2.5 mL of 10% inactivated fetal bovine serum was added into each test tube to neutralize the sanitizer efficacy. The neutralized solutions were serial 10-fold dilutions with phosphate buffer solution, and 0.2 mL of the diluents was injected into the allantoic cavity of five ten-day-old-chickens per dilution time. After incubation of the embryos for five days, the viability of the AIV was examined by hemagglutination titer. The valid dilution of the disinfectant spray was estimated according to the dilution time that the virus titer was inactivated more than $10^4$ 50% egg-infective dose (EID50)/mL compared with pathogen control. Results: In HW and OM conditions, the valid dilutions of the disinfectant spray against AIV were seven- and three-fold dilutions, respectively. The AIV titer of the pathogen control was more than 6.1 log10EID50/mL, and there was no embryonic toxicity. Conclusion: The present study showed that this disinfectant spray has effective virucidal activity against AIV.
Botanical antimicrobial agent-grapefruit seed extract mixture (BAAG) have an unknown compounds which exhibit the antibiotic activities aganist microorganisms including bacteria and fungi. We have examined the effects of BAAG on the physiological function of Botrytis cinerea which was isolated from necrotic lesions of decayed fruits and vegetables such as cucumbers, grapes, tomatoes, and red peppers during storage. In the results of enzymatic activities related to the energetic metabolism there was no inhibitory effect of BAAG on the activities of several enzymes in vitro including glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase and malate dehydrogenase, while there was inhibitory effect of BAAG on the activities of hexokinase and succinate dehydrogenase. O-nitrophenyl-$\beta$-D-galactopyranoside(ONPG), the artificial substrate of $\beta$-galactosidase was hydrolyzed in the presence of BAAG, indicating that the membrane was pertubated by the BAAG. From the results we suggested that the antibiotic activity of BAAG is due to the change of membrane permeability of the cell. BAAG was fractionated and purified by silica gel and sephadex column chromatography. Among active fractions two peaks were identified as naringin and limonin when they were analyzed by by NMR and Fast atomic bombardment.
