A Qualitative Study of Interpretations of Grandmothers' Childrearing Experiences (손자녀 양육지원 경험에 대한 할머니들의 해석에 관한 질적 연구)

  • This study explores interpretations of grandmothers' experiences rearing their grandchildren. For this study, 13 participants provided in-depth interview data, which was analyzed according to Spradely's ethnographic method. Based on the pattern of interpretations, nine concepts were classified into three categories: (i) repentance (compulsive decisions, passivity of the childrearing activity, non-compensation); (ii) sorrow (restrictions on everyday life, renunciation of occupational careers, worsened health); and (iii) satisfaction (decreased isolation in old age, proof of existence for their children, intimacy development with their grandchild). The results of this study show that grandmothers have a higher appreciation for the benefits of relational compensation than for personal cost. Some practical implications are suggested to improve family welfare.

The relationships of the adolescent with parents and grandparents and their effects on the adolescent's ego identity (부모 및 조모와의 관계가 청소년의 자아정체감에 미치는 영향 -동거와 비동거 가족의 비교-)

  • The purpose of the study are to investigate the effects of the bond between grandmother and grandchild and the degree of cohesion between child in adolescence and their parents on adolescent's ego identity. The major findings are as follows. First, a level of adolesent's ego identity is moderate on the whole. Not only the degree of the cohesion between children in adolescence and parent is high, but also the bond between children in adolescence and grandmother is high. Second, adolescent's ego identity is associated with cohesion with their parent. The research also shows that adolescent's ego identity is influenced by the relationship between grandchild and grandmother. Finally, the important factors on ego identity of the adolescent who are living with their grandmothers are the degree of the cohesion with father, grandmother-parent relationships, the degree of the cohesion with mother, and occupational status of mother. Those who are not living with grandmothers, the degree of the cohesion with their mothers and the bonds with grandmothers have significant influences on adolescent's ego identity.

  • Mother's view and mediating behavior of paternal grandparents-grandchildren is explored by using data of 159 mothers who have children at teens. The analysis indicates as below. 1. Mothers highly except the roles of grandparents such as teaching values and family historians, role models for good life, influencing on the developing of self-identity of grandchildren. However mothers want grandparents keep distance from the lives of grandchildren. This may be double message to grandparents that they may find it uneasy to accomodate. 2. Grandchildren's role is expected very positively by mothers. 3. Mothers' mediating level of paternal grandparents-grandchildren relations is neutral and a little bit positive on the whole. Mothers' mediating behavior between grandfathers-grandchildren is associated with mothers' view on the importance of grandfathers in the lives of grandchildren and residence pattern. Mothers' mediating behavior between grandmothers-grandchildren is associated with mothers' view on the importance of grandmothers in the lives of grandchildren, grandchildren's role, the intimacy between mothers and grandmothers and residence pattern.

Factors Influencing Parenting Self-efficacy in Grandmothers Raising Infant and Toddler (영유아를 돌보는 조모의 양육효능감에 영향을 미치는 요인)

  • Purpose: This study was done to identify degrees of factors influencing parenting self-efficacy in grandmother raising infant and toddler. Method: A convenience sample of 121 grandmothers whose grandchild was between 3 to 36 months old was used. The variables were health status, health problems and life event. The data were collected through a questionnaire survey and descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA with Scheffe test, Pearson correlation coefficients and stepwise multiple regression were used to analyze using SPSS WIN 12.0. Results: The average score for parenting self-efficacy was 39.39(SD=5.09), somewhat higher than moderate in level. Factor that was significant in influencing parenting self-efficacy was life event. This factors accounted for 14.6% of explained variance. Conclusions: It was found that the life event was influenced to parenting self-efficacy in grandmothers raising infant and toddler. From this study it is proposed that there is a need to develop programs and policies which support them. Ultimately a good care environment for children will be good for the young children's growth and development.

A Comparison of Education Needs between Mothers and Grandmothers for Toddlers in Child-Rearing (유아를 양육하는 어머니와 할머니의 양육 교육요구 비교)

  • This study compared the parenting education needs of mothers and grandmothers who are rearing toddlers (12~36 months old), in order to examine how to resolve conflicts and problems caused by inconsistencies in the parenting attitudes of these caregivers. The findings will provide basic data for the development of a consistent parenting education program. The participants in this study were 201 mothers and 201 grandmothers who were all rearing toddlers. Data was collected at 11 daycare center in C city, Gyeongsangnamdo from August 1, 2017 to October 12, 2017. The collected data was analyzed by descriptive statistics, frequencies, percentages, means, standard deviations, and independent t-tests. As a result of comparing the parenting education needs of mothers and grandmothers, the overall evaluation of education needs was rated as 2.82±0.58 for mothers and 2.81±0.63 for grandmothers on a scale of 4, and there were no statistically significant differences in all five domains (t=0.21, p=.836). The highest education needs were found in the prevention and management of disease and injury, and the lowest was in the physical caring. Based on the results of this study, a toddler parenting education program was developed after selecting contents focusing on the prevention and management of disease and injury domain where education needs are high. We propose a study to examine the effects of applying such a program to both mothers and grandmothers who are rearing toddlers.

A Study on the Experience of the Grandmothers Who Refused to Support Childcare (손자녀 양육지원을 거부한 조모의 경험에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to enrich our understanding of the family utilizing childcare by grandmothers and the elderly women by examining the experience of grandmothers who refused to support raising their grandchildren. The researcher focused on grandmothers who have been in charge of caring the family in the main and tried to explore the reasons for their decision not to take care of their grandchildren. For the purpose, Research participants were seven elderly women who have refused raising of their grand-children. Data were collected by in-depth interview and analyzed based on the phenomenological method. As results, it turned out that the elderly women refused caring of their grandchildren due to the burden of parenting and the rejection of an extended mother role, and the fear of family conflicts, but they felt sorry about their refusal of a request for caring support from their adult children. Second. these decisions caused various dynamics of the family members, and they were experiencing psychological difficulties. Third, elderly women perceived raising of grandchildren as a task of adult children or a problem for which the society should be accountable, and felt that the family and the society have shifted the responsibility to them. This research result confirms that a new generation of the elderly women have emerged who have different viewpoints on caregiving. It also presents a necessity to reflect the viewpoints of elderly who are mainly concerned when establishing a policy of caregiving. Based on this finding, this study also presents implications regarding support for family utilizing childcare by grandmothers and support for the elderly women.

Depressive Symptoms of Caregiving Grandmothers in South Korea (손자녀를 돌보는 한국 조모들의 돌봄 특성에 따른 우울 증상)

  • This study was to investigate depressive symptoms of caregiving grandmothers in South Korea and related factors focusing on caregiving characteristics. The data were drawn from the fourth wave of Korean Longitudinal Study on Ageing (KLoSA). The study participants were 3,291 grandmothers who had at least one grandchild, and we limited our analysis to 127 grandmothers who had provided care for their grandchild(ren) during the past one year. As for the depressive symptoms, Center for Epidemiological Survey-Depression 10(CES-D 10) short version were applied. Caregiving characteristics including caregiving duration by weeks per year, caregiving hours per week and the number of grandchildren who received grandmother care were examined. A multiple logistic regression was performed to detect association between caregiving characteristics and depressive symptoms while adjusting for general socioeconomic characteristics and health status of caregiving grandmothers. The longer duration of caregiving lowered the depressive symptoms and in contrast, those who spent more hours for providing care to their grandchildren were more exposed to the depressive symptoms. Physical pain significantly increased their depressive symptoms and low income level were more likely to induce depressive symptoms. More detailed studies on grandchild caregiving patterns among grandmothers were needed. Also, tailored support policy and services should be considered to alleviate their burden and depression in the future.

Caregiving Rewards and Costs of Grandmothers Raising Grandchildren (조손가족 조모가 경험하는 손자녀 양육의 보상과 비용)

  • There has been a sharp increase in the number of grandmothers raising grandchildren in contemporary Korean society. However, little is known about the complexity of the experiences of the custodial grandparenting. Most of the studies mainly examined burden/cost and have paid little attention to the positive aspects of custodial grandparenting. In order to overcome this limitation of previous research, this study aims 1) to examine not only the costs but also the rewards of custodial grandparenting and to explore related factors, 2) to develop the typology based on relative rewards-burden perception of grandmothers about custodial grandparenting and explore the group differences. The data were gathered from 449 grandmothers raising their grandchildren as a primary caregiver, using a structured questionnaire. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, correlation, hierarchical multiple regression and ANOVA, with SPSS WIN 12.0 program. Main findings are as follows: First, custodial grandmothers report not only care-giving burden such as physical burnout and economic burden but also various rewards such as joy of watching their grandchildren grow and feeling good about themselves to be a help with their adult children, i.e. grandchildren's father or mother. Second, factors related to the level of perceived cost of grandparenting are different from the factors affecting the positive aspects of grandparenting. Third, results of the two by two cross-tab analysis based on the level of rewards and burden show that about 32 percent of the grandparents belong to Type II group(high rewards-low cost). This result is quite contrary to the assumption of previous research focusing mostly on cost and burden of custodial grandparenting. Fourth, four groups were different in terms of grandmother & grandchildren's characteristics. Implications of these results are discussed.

Effects of Grandparenting Roles and Generativity on Depression among Grandmothers Providing Care for Grandchildren (손자녀를 돌보는 조모의 역할특성과 생성감이 노년기 우울감에 미치는 영향)

  • This study examines the relationships between grandparenting roles, elderly generativity, and depressive symptoms. Data were collected from 129 grandmothers who helped raise grandchildren attending daycare centers. Grandparenting roles were assessed as generational transferers, caretakers, emotional supporters, and educators. Elderly generativity and depressive symptoms were evaluated based on the Loyola Generativity Scale and CES-D (Center for Epidemiological Studies on Depression Scale), respectively. Data were analyzed using t-test, ANOVA, and regression analysis methods. According to the results, grandmothers were most likely to play a role as caretakers, and there were differences across factors correlated with grandparenting roles. More specifically, daily hours spent on grandparenting and years of grandparenting were related to the caretaker role, and a high level of education was related to the educator role. Poor health was correlated with the generational initiator role. According to correlation and regression analyses, grandmothers who had access to more economic resources and who served as educators, emotional supporters, or generation initiators were more likely to show generativity. In addition, the higher the generativity, the less likely the depressive symptom was. These results have important implications for developing programs that can help grandparents raise preschool-aged grandchildren and suggest some interesting avenues for future research.

A Story of Grandmothers Raising Grandchildren in an Ethnography: Constituting a Family beyond the Multiple Boundaries (조모의 손자녀 양육에 관한 문화기술지: 다중의 경계 밖에 가족 만들기)

  • Due to the change of socio-cultural conditions, family dissolving is increasing. As an alternative, grandparents who parent their grandchildren are also increasing rapidly and many show deep concern at this phenomenon. The grandparents-grandchildren families were approached through policy-makers' and professionals' perspective, not through insiders' view. The purpose of this ethnographic study were to explore the experiences and meaning-makings of grandmothers who are raising grandchildren. 22 narrative interviews with 10 grandmothers were conducted. The results of data analysis are as follows. The cultural theme in rasing experiences of grandmothers is 'Constituting a family beyond the multiple boundaries'. This theme include four cultural meanings: 'Recunstuction of everyday life beyound boundaries', 'Boundary of relative poverty more rigid than boundary of absolute poverty', 'Compromising constantly with normal culture having both inclusion and exclusion' boundaries', 'Having aspiration toward crossing the boundaries'. The policiy-makers and practitioners for the grandparents-grandchildren families should recognize the experiences and meaning-making of these families and should perform culturally perceptible and family-centered policies and practices.
