The effects of microstructure on fretting wear were investigated in Inconel 690 tube. The microstructure observation indicated that the solution annealing temperature and time affected the grain size of the Inconel 690 tubes. The carbide morphology, along grain boundaries, was mainly affected by thermal treatment time and temperature. The wear test results showed that specimens with larger grain size and with coarse carbides along grain boundaries had better wear resistance. Cracks were found in specimens with carbides along the grain boundary, while few cracks were found in carbide free specimens. It seemed that the carbides on grain boundary assisted crack formation and propagation in carbide containing specimens. On the other hand, the micro-hardness of specimen did not have a major role in fretting wear. It could be inferred from the SEM images of worn surfaces that the main wear mechanism of carbide containing specimen was delamination, while that of carbide free specimen was abrasion.
Magnesium and its alloys are attracted towards all engineering applications like automotive, marine, aerospace etc. due to its inherent high strength to weight ratio. But, extensive use of Mg alloys is limited to the current scenario because of low wear and corrosion resistance behavior. However, equal channel angular press is one of the severe plastic deformation technique which has been effective method to improve the wear and corrosion resistance by achieving fine grain structure. In this study, the effect of grain refinement on wear and corrosion resistance of AZ80 Mg alloys were investigated. The wear behavior of the coarse and fine-grained Mg alloys was examined through $L_9$ orthogonal array experiments in order to comprehend the wear behavior under varies control parameters. It was shown that ECAPed alloy increased the wear and corrosion resistance of the Mg alloy through the formation of fine grain and uniform distribution of secondary ${\beta}-phase$. Also, the performance of AZ80 Mg alloy for these changeswas discussed through SEM morphology.

WC cemented carbide are used as many die material to improve abration resistance. Mechanical properties of the cemented carbide were influenced by Co content and WC grain size. In this study, effects of Co content and WC grain size of WC cemented carbide on wear were examied. We prepared 13 cemented carbides with different Co content and WC grain size. Wear test was carried out against S45C under dry condition at 98N and 232mm/s. From the results, we found that wear increased with both Co content and WC grain size. Specific wear rate was range $10^{-7}mm^3/Nm$.
The water test results indicated that the impurities had detrimetal effect on the wear resistance of silicon nitride and the effects were getting severe as the temperature increased. Especially when Ca existed as an impurity the detrimental effects was the most severe. These results were resulted from the fact that impurities lowered the mechanical properties of the grain boundary phase of silicon nitride. The wear test results of glass/glass-ceramic specimens having a similar composition to the grain boundary phase of silicon nitride revea-led that the specimen containing CaO showed the lowest wear resistance. The existence of Fe and Ca at the grain boundary phase assisted forming a grain boundary phase with relatively low refractoriness. Therefore at a given wear condition the removal of deformed layer would be easier. The results showed that the glass phases could be modified by heat-treatment and this modification improved tribological characteristics of the silicon nitride.
Through the observation of wear scar of two ceramic materials, microstructural wear mechanisms was investigated. As for the $Al_2O_3$-5 vol% SiC nanocomposite, the grain boundary fracture was suppressed by the presence of SiC nano-particles. The intragranular SiC particles have inhibited the extension of plastic deformation through the whole grain. Part of plastic deformation was accommodated around SiC particles, which made a cavity at the interface between SiC and matrix alumina. On the other hand, gas-pressure sintered silicon nitride showed extensive grain boundary fracture due to the thermal fatigue. The lamination of wear scar was initiated by the dissolution of grain boundary phase. These two extreme cases showed the importance of microstructures in wear behavior.
Wear and wear transition mechanisms during sliding as a function of time in Al2O3 have been studied to understand the wear behaviour of brittle ceramic materials. Commercial Si3N4 ball was rotated against flat Al2O3 specimens which were hot pressed and polished using upto 1${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ diamond paste. Paraffin oil was used as a lubricant. Experimental data show that wear of Al2O3 is separated into distinct two stages, i.e., initial stage of slow wear and final stage of rapid wear. Microstructural observations at worn surface show that wear occurs through grooving and grain pull-out in the initial and final stage respectively. TEM observations beneath the worn surfaces show that grain pull-out starts to occur by the propagation of grain boundary cracks induced by dislocation pile-up throughthe surface.

To investigate sliding friction and wear behaviors of WC-Co/WC-Co pairs containing different WC grain sizes, the ball-on-disc test in air were carried out, where WC grain sizes a $0.5\;{\mu}m$ (F.G.) and $1.5\;{\mu}m$ (C.G.). The wear volume of F.G. pin for F.G. pin/C.G. disc is larger than that of F.G. pin for F.G. pin/F.G. disc due to higher friction coefficient, and the surfaces after wear test are richer in oxygen compared to those before test. Furthermore, the wear debris, which is composed of nona-scale grain, after the wear test are remarkably richer in oxygen than to those before test.

In this study, bulk nano-crystalline $Si_3N_4$ ceramics were fabricated by spark plasma sintering (SPS) and their mechanical properties, in particular wear, were investigated. A wide range of grain sizes, from 80 nm and 250 nm were obtained by varying sintering conditions ($1550^{\circ}C$-5 min to $1650^{\circ}C$-20 min). The elastic modulus of obtained ceramics was ${\sim}250$ GPa and hardness was in the range of $13{\sim}14$ GPa. The indentation fracture toughness increased from $2.58MPa{\cdot}m^{1/2}$ to $3.24MPa{\cdot}m^{1/2}$ with increasing sintering temperature possibly due to the elongated grains. Sliding wear tests revealed at least an order magnitude improvement in wear resistance with grain refinement. Microstructure analysis indicated that nano-$Si_3N_4$ specimens worn mainly through delamination and microcracking, while that of coarser specimens revealed severe wear with grain debonding and fracture.

This paper addresses the R-curve properties, wear resistance, and erosion resistance of the two silicon carbide ceramics with different microstructures, i.e. , fine grained SiC and in situ-toughened SiC(IST SIC). Fine grained SiC exhibits a relatively flat R-curve behavior whereas the IST SiC exhibits a increasing R-curve behavior. The increasing R-curve behavior in IST SiC is attributed to relatively weak grain boundaries. The rate of material removal during wear tests and erosion tests was higher for IST SiC than that for fine grained SiC. This is attributed to the weaker grain boundaries in IST SiC than that in fine grained SiC. It is implied that fracture toughness in short crack regime should be taken into consideration in the interpretation of the microscopical material removal process. We show that the higher the strength of grain boundaries is, the higher wear and erosion resistances are.

In order to improve the productivity and quality of the hot rolled products, many morden mills have continuously required advanced roll materials. The introduction of HSS rolls in early stands of the Hot Strip Mill brought the excellent performance in wear resistance and surface roughness. Ni-grain rolls used in the later stands was needed to improve the roll performance. Therefore, the carbide reinforced Ni-grain roll was developed. The present paper will describe the development of carbide reinforced rolls made by INI STEEL and the results of mill tests. The wear resistance was increased upto $40\%$ and the anti-accident ablility was remarkably improved compared to the normal Ni-rain roll.
