  • Rice (Oryza sativa L.) is one of the most important food crops in the world. The eating quality of cooked rice is the most important trait japonica rice breeding in Korea. Rice varieties that produce kernels that are firm and fluffy after cooking are generally favored in countries such as India, Pakistan, and Indonesia. Whereas varieties with kernels that maintain its shape, glossiness, savory odor, stickiness, and tenderness when cooked are preferred in Korea. This study analyzed the major physicochemical components of rice grain associated with the eating quality of 20 japonica rice varieties. Physicochemical components such as the amylose content, protein content, amylographic characteristics of polished rice, and texture of cooked rice were tested using a Tensipresser as alternative indirect methods in determining rice eating quality. Evaluation of eating quality of cooked rice using sensory test was conducted with 20 well trained members. The 20 rice varieties in different eating quality showed amylose contents of 17~20%. The amylose content of rice varieties had negative correlation with peak viscosity, however positive correlation with setback viscosity was observed. The stickiness and adhesiveness of cooked rice showed correlation with the amylose content and amylopectin chain length distribution. Rice varieties with good eating quality showed less retrogradation of cooked rice and higher hot viscosity of rice flour in amylogram.

  • Fusarium head blight (FHB; scab) caused mainly by Fusarium graminearum is a devastating disease of wheat and barley around the world. FHB causes yield reductions and contamination of grain with trichothecene mycotoxins such as deoxynivalenol (DON) which are a major health concern for humans and animals. The objective of this research was to develop an easy seed or seedling inoculation assay, and to compare these assays with whole plant resistance of twenty-nine Korean winter wheat cultivars to FHB. The clip-dipping assay consists of cutting off the coleoptiles apex, dipping the coleoptiles apex in conidial suspension, covering in plastic bag for 3 days, and measuring the lengths of lesions 7 days after inoculation. There were significant cultivar differences after inoculation with F. graminearum in seedling relative to the controls. Correlation coefficients between the lesion lengths of clip-dipping inoculation and FHB Type II resistance from adult plants were significant (r=0.45; P<0.05). Results from two other seedling inoculation methods, spraying and pin-point inoculation, were not correlated with adult FHB resistance. Single linear correlation was not significant between seed germination assays (soaking and soak-dry) and FHB resistance (Type I and Type II), respectively. These results showed that clip-dipping inoculation method using F. graminearum may offer a real possibility of simple, rapid, and reliable for the early screening of FHB resistance in wheat.

  • We investigated the surface oxidation behavior of cube-textured polycrystalline nickel at various oxidation conditions. Cube-textured NiO film was formed on a cube-textured polycrystalline nickel regardless of oxidation conditions but different growth behavior of NiO crystals was observed depending on the oxidation conditions. The introduction of water vapor into $O_2$ did not affect the texture evolution, but rough and porous microstructure was developed. Microstructure of NiO film tends to be denser as the oxygen partial pressure increases. It is interesting that (111) peak of theta - two theta diffraction pattern started to get stronger in air atmosphere and (111) plane became the major texture in the substrate oxidized in high purity argon gas. Small amount of high index crystallographic plane NiO peak crystal was observed when $N_{2}O$ was used as an oxidant while only (200) plane crystal was formed in dry $O_2$ atmosphere. Flat and smooth surface was changed into rough faceted one when ramping rate to oxidation temperature was faster. The grain size of NiO was decreased when the oxygen partial pressure was low. It was also observed that the modification of nickel surface suppressed the development of (200) texture.

  • Retrospective study on the comparison of outbreaks of food poisoning for food hygiene in Korea and Japan. The average value of morbidity rate by year in Korea during the period of 1971 to 1992 was 2.9 per 100,000 population, and that of Japan was 29.1. The mean value of mortality rates in case of food poisoning by year in Korea was 2.33%, and that of Japan was 0.07%. When compared the rates of morbidity and mortality between Korea and Japan during the same period, the morbidity rates of Japan were much higher than those of Korea (p<0.01). However, mortality rate of patients in Korea were much higher then those of Japan(p<0.01). Resulting from comparative observation of food poisoning by preparing facilities between Korea and Japan. The highest list the places where the outbreaks occurred was home-made foods accounted for 48.8% of the total cases in Korea and that of Japan was restaurants accounted for 33.0%. Causative foods in Korea, the most common incrimination vehicles were seafood, meat and animal products and grain and vegetables, including mushroom. However, in the case of the common incrimination vehicles Japan were unknown and other foods, seafood, vegetables and meat and animal products etc.. Food poisoning of pathogenic substance in Korea were 60.9% of bacterial food poisoning of the total cases showing that Vibrio species, Salmonella spp., Staphylococcus spp., pathogenic E. coli, Clostridium spp. and other spp. were 33.3%, 26.2%, 16.3%, 5.3%, 0.4% and 18.5%, respectively. On the other hand, in Japan, major causes were Vibrio spp. (45.7%), Staphylococcus spp. (23.7%), Salmonella spp. (16.8%), pathogenic E. coli (3.8%), Clostridium spp. (0.2%) and other spp. (9.6%).

  • Coarse granular materials such as gravel, rubble is used as major fill materials in earth structures of railway, road and dam. Therefore, it is essential to accurately evaluate properties of these materials for reasonable design and construction. In the precedent study, we built large triaxial testing system and verified system compliance with a focus on the dynamic properties. And we could secured the reliability of the system. In this study, the cyclic triaxial tests were performed in various experimental conditions on coarse granular material. Two series of parallel graded samples are prepared by mixing crushed rock. The influence of grain size, loading pattern, loading frequency, and fine contents were analyzed and discussed.

  • Amounts of total suspended matter(TSM) around the Kori waters have been monitored for two years to understand the dispersal pattern of fine-grained sediment. Average concentration of the TSM is $3\~4\;mg/\iota$ in the surface and $3.5\~5\;mg/\iota$ in the near-bottom water. Semi-quantitative analysis for the four major clay minerals in TSM is also performed. The average relative abundance of each clay mineral such as illite, kaolinite, chlorite, and smectite is $65\%,\;17\%,\;17\%$, and $1\%$, respectively. It seems that the majority of recent fine-grained sediment deposited around the Kori area is derived from the Nakdong River. The texture of surface sediment is also dominated by fine-grained fraction leading up to $90\%$ of silt and clay content. The grain size decreases seaward progressively.

  • Morphological evolution and growth mechanism at the solid/liquid interface during solidification were investigated in the Ni-base superalloy GTD111M by directional soldification and quenching(DSQ) technique. The experiments were conducted by changing solidification rate(V) and thermal gradient(G) which are major solidification process variables. High thermal gradient condition could be obtained by increasing the furnace temperature and closely attaching the heating and cooling zones in the Bridgeman type furnace. The dendritic/equiaxed transition was found in the G/V value lower than $0.05$\times$10{^3}^{\circ}C$s/$\textrm{mm}^2$, and the planar interface of the MC-${\gamma}$ eutectic was found under $17 $\times$ 10{^3}^{\circ}C$ s/$\textrm{mm}^2$. It was confirmed that the dendrite spacing depended on the cooling rate(GV), and the primary spacing was affected by the thermal gradient more than solidification rate. The dendrite lengths were decreased as increasing the thermal graditne, and the dendrite tip temperature was close to the liquidus temperature at $50 \mu\textrm{m}$/s.

  • To observe the effect of fused phosphate fertilization, as a soil improvement material, in low productive paddy field which has rapid permeable sandy-skeletal texture, this experiment was carried out under five different levels of fused phosphate. The results obtained are briefly as follows: 1. Rice, grown in areas receiving annual fused phosphate application of from 200 to 250kg per 10a showed yield increases of about 10 to 27 percent based on 1, 000 grain weight of brown rice. Other favorable effects from high fused phosphate applications include increased number of panicles, faster ripening rate of the rice, and lower infection rate of blast. 2. In the soil analysis after the experiment, the useful soil chemical properties, such as available phosphate, silica, soil pH, exchangeable calcium, magnesium, and base saturation were increased significantly. The exchangeable potassium, however, was not changed noticeably. 3. The relation between the major soil chemical properties, especially available phophate and silica, and yield component which directly effect yields, showed a significant correlation statistically.

  • Maize (Zea mays L.; 2N=20) is major staple food crop grown worldwide adapted to several biotic and abiotic stresses. Maydis leaf blight (MLB) and banded leaf and sheath blight (BLSB) are serious foliar fungal diseases may cause up to 40% and 100% grain yield loss, respectively. The present studies were undertaken to work out the efficacy of chemicals, botanicals and bioagents for the management of MLB and BLSB under field condition for two seasons Kharif 2014 and 2015. Five molecules (propiconazole 25 EC, hexaconazole 25 EC, carbendazim 50 WP, mancozeb 75 WP and carbedazim 12 WP + mancozeb 63 WP), two bioagents i.e. Trichoderma harzianum and T. viridae and three botanicals namely azadirachtin, sarpagandha and bel pathar were tested for their efficacy against MLB. Eight newer fungicides viz., difenconazole 250 SC, hexaconazole 5 EC, carbendazim 50WP, validamycin 3 L, tebuconazole 250 EC, trifloxystrobin 50 WG + tebuconazole 50 WG, azoxystrobin 250 EC and pencycuron 250 SC were evaluated against BLSB. Analysis revealed significant effects of propiconazole at 0.1%, carbendazim 12 WP + mancozeb 63 WP at 0.125% and sarpagandha leaves at 10% against MLB pathogen, whereas validamycin at 0.1% and trifloxystrobin 25 WG + tebuconazole 50 WG at 0.05% were found effective against BLSB. The slow rate of disease control virtually by the bioagents might have not shown instant effect on plant response to the yield enhancing components. The identified sources of management can be used further in strengthening the plant protection in maize against MLB and BLSB.

  • Thin transparent Cu films in the thickness range of 10 ~ 40 nm are deposited by rf-magnetron sputtering on porous silicon (PS) anodized on p-type silicon in dark. Microstructural features of the Cu films are investigated using SEM, AFM and XRD techniques. The RMS roughness of the Cu films is found to be around 1.47 nm and the grain growth is columnar with a (111) preferred orientation and follows the Volmer-Weber mode. The photoluminescence studies showed that a broad luminiscence peak of PS near the blue-green region gets blue shifted (~0.05 eV) with a small reduction in intensity and therefore, Cu-related PL quenching is absent. The FTIR absorption spectra on the PS/Cu structure revealed no major change of the native PS peaks but only a reduction in the relative intensity. The I-V characteristic curves further establish the Schottky nature of the diode with an ideality factor of 2.77 and a barrier height of 0.678 eV. An electroluminiscence (EL) signal of small intensity could be detected for the above diode.
